1 NOR CAL PRESIDENTS MESSAGE PRESIDENTS MESSAGE 12/18/2013 I can t believe it s another year already I hadn t even gotten used to the old one yet. Hope everybody had a Merry Christmas and their wishes came true and a Happy New Year with resolutions that aren t too difficult to keep. If you haven t made reservations for the Hall of Fame Dinner it may not be too late. Just give me a call and I will see what we can do for you. It s a perfect chance to see who s who in archery see old friends and meet new ones. The Nor-Cal Indoor Shoot will be held at Wilderness Archery in Rocklin on February 16 th so mark that on your calendars. It has been getting a few more archers each year. Let s see if we can make 2014 the largest one yet. As every year at the Annual Business Meeting we will be going over petitions submitted by CBH/SAA and the NFAA from around the country. There are two petitions this year from CBH/SAA which have to do with when a nominating committee should be appointed and what happens if there is only one candidate for an office. It looks like there are about 21 petitions that have been submitted by the NFAA Clubs and Members. They cover numerous issues such as how the National Outdoor Championships Tournament will be held (3/5 days) and what will be shot which days (Hunter/Field/ Animal) that a Field round should be the first day and if Mulligans should be allowed, who stands on which side of the shooting stake and which target they will be shooting at, the definition of Longbow, if a two piece Longbow can be used, If after an equipment malfunction should a practice round be allowed and at the distance of the failure, If a Champion Tournament is hosted by the NFAA then only NFAA rules and classes will apply, how to interpret the rules and policies (intent should be more important than the written word, whether a vertical cross hair in the scope housing is Bow hunter Freestyle and where should the pins be in relation to it, make the X ring a point for all not just Professional Division, 5 pages on Instructor training and certification, establishing an Annual Outdoor Target Championship, combining Barebow/Bowhunter, combining Freestyle Limited/Freestyle Limited Bowhunter, at the Sectional and National use the old Senior and Master Senior classes to be optional at the State level and below and how to use all classes if there are enough shooters in the class or combine due to lack of registrations. As you can see there are many things to talk about and your input is valuable. We will be going over these on January 8 th at the Nor-Cal Meeting. This does not leave us much time since this will be discussed and voted on January 19 th at the Annual Business Meeting in Sacramento. I m hoping these have been posted on the NFAA web page but have not had the chance to look in to that. Thanks for listening, Dave Deas Attitude The most important factor that will increase both your enjoyment of Archery & Bowhunting and the satisfaction that you glean from the sport is the attitude that you carry with you. Dave Deas 916/ drdeas@comcast.net
2 Legislative News The Legislative Committee of CBHSAA has retained the lobbyist services of Gaines and Associates. Costs for the service runs 10K per year so additional funding sources are being researched. The simplest is adding $1 dollar to shoot fees at tournaments. If every club instituted this change there should be enough funds collected to support the lobbyist and add to the Legislative Defense Fund. An incentive program will be instituted to reward individuals, organizations and business who contribute to the Legislative Defense Fund. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife has petitioned the Fish and Game Commission on clean up language related to State Wildlife Areas. CBHSAA has petitioned added language be included to allow bow fishing on the wildlife areas where fishing is allowed. Adoption is scheduled for the February Commission meeting in Sacramento. Mammal regulations changes will be introduced at the February meeting with adoption set for the April meeting. Robert Moore NEWS LETTER EDITOR DEBORAH DEAS 916/ Hall of Fame January Lion s gate, 3410 Westover St. Sacramento Ca, McClellan Park Reservation: David Deas 916/ Hotel Reservations Lion s Gate 866/ Inductees Ron Morrett Kathy Budding Bob Lawson Jeff Fabry Nor/Cal Range Inspector I hope you all enjoyed the Holidays. We have a new year just full of fun shoots coming up. Try to make as many shoots as you can. It's great archery practice and it helps the clubs stay in business. The clubs needing inspection in the next few months are; Yuba Sutter Bow hunters, Eldorado Hills Bowmen and Yolo Bowmen. Unfortunately, Nor/Cal doesn't have current points of contact for all the clubs and that means I don't have points of contact either. If your range does not get inspected you will loose your charter and your insurance. Don't let that happen. Take a few minutes, get in touch with Dave Deas, find out what's new and exciting and give him the information needed to keep you in the loop. If you know me, you know how this article ends. Keep Archery Fun. Tex Musser

4 NOR-CAL Danish Archer Lar Andersen Danish archer Lars Andersen has studied the forgotten rapid-fire techniques of master archers. By holding several arrows in his hand at one time, he releases them with deadly accuracy and is now faster than Legolas from The Lord of the Rings. But he says, he discovered that "man is faster than machines, so today, I shoot only with bow." After studying the ancient master archers of China, Turkey, Persia and other countries, Andersen is able to shoot off 10 arrows in 4.9 seconds. The display Andersen puts on in his video -- which was posted to YouTube on Nov. 26, is astounding. At times he draws and fires so rapidly, the eye cannot keep up with him. The deadly accuracy he shows even when moving, comes from studying history's longforgotten master archers. "Historically" Andersen explains, "archery was to shoot [a] series of arrows, fast, and hit targets in movement and... be in motion simultaneously." Today archery is more of a sport says the narrator, but for 60,000 years man has shot with a bow and arrow. It was the advent of guns he explained, that forced rapid-fire archery to become a lost art. Andersen describes himself as a Danish painter and writer who originally built repeater crossbows to shoot with. VOL. # ONE ISSUE # 1
