1 Volume 56 issue 2/2018 Maya News February march 2018 INSIDE THIS ISSUE Presidents report Community/NorCal Hunting report Classification /club shoot Sportsman show pict Ranger manager Polar bear Flyer 4 New Members 5 Summer League Flyer 6 Broadhead/FT league 7 Maya Calendar of Events 8 Hello Maya members, placer flood control is about 90 percent done with the new bridge. It will be nice to have all that parking back. The polar bear league is up and running. We have had a good numbers of shooters, both members and guest. I would like to thank everyone who has helped with the setup in the morning and the pick up. This year we had a good turn out at the youth fair at Cal Expo with 1,500 kids coming through. I would like to thank Johnny W. and Robert W. For all their hard work. Friday we had Maya instructors help with the kids. Saturday we had Yahi Bowmen along with Maya members, plus Cougar Bowmen and help from QQ Archery. Sunday was El Dorado Hills Bowmen and Lodi Bowmen. A big thank you to Lodi 1 Bowmen for helping with the tear down with all the equipment. I would like to thank everyone for all their help in teaching these kids the sport of archery. For many, it was their first time and 2 everyone enjoyed themselves. (see pictures on the next page) Couple of last things, work party s for our annual Around The World shoot will start in March. Jeff Azar will be sending out notes with all the details. Our annual banquet/potluck will be held 3 at Wilderness Archery March 17th at 6:00pm we will have a flyer with more information. Well I think I ve said enough. See you at the range. Nor Cal / Legislative Community: Maya Archers has a long tradition of holding events that promote uses of the bow and arrow. Events include tournaments, leagues, shooting instruction, conservation classes and bowhunter education. Partnerships with California Waterfowl Association, Department of Fish and Wildlife, City of Roseville and other groups to hold classes/events at offsite locations or at Maya Archery Range. The next Maidu All Skills Archery Classes will Saturday February 24 th and March 17 th starting at 10am to 12pm. Classes can be held at the site in range far right side. During these classes the site in range is still open except for the wall of hay and sometimes the 20 yard target for extra-large groups. If you re unsure of what s open or procedures, ask the lead instructor/coach running the event. Thanks to all the members who have used the site in range while the classes have been held to keep safety as a priority. A local 4H group has joined the club and will be holding their group archery sessions on the short bales at the sight in range Sunday afternoons. In general a vehicle will be posted between the sight in range and the wall of hay to provide a safety barrier so retrieval of arrows can be done separately from the main range. Please use caution when retrieving arrows beyond the target butts while the group is shooting. Suggest holding off going behind target butts while they are shooting. Nor Cal What is Nor Cal? The full name for this regional group is Nor Cal Bowhunters. They represent the areas 9 archery/bowhunting clubs and 3 archery pro shops to California Bowmen Hunters State Archery Association (CBHSAA). CBHSAA and Nor Cal are chartered to the National Field Archery Association (NFAA). What do Nor Cal and CBHSAA do for Archery or Bowhunting? There are many facets to their representation of Archery and Bowhunting. CBHSAA is Dedicated to Promoting and Protecting the Archery and Bowhunting Heritages. This statewide organization speaks for California Archers and Bowhunters in matters concerning Legislation and Regulation since The Legislative committee of CBHSAA includes a Coordinator, 6 state area reps and each region group has one legislative representative. Archery is a shooting sport so at times issues arise to limit or exclude the shooting of Bows and Arrows for any purpose. CBHSAA will pursue those actions for the benefit of all Archers and Bowhunters. The next Nor Cal meeting will be Wednesday March 14 th at Maya s clubhouse; 7pm. No agenda has been set at this writing. A California Fish and Game Commission meeting (CFGC) were held February 8 th and 9 th in Sacramento. The 2018 mammal regulations will be discussed, only tag allotments are being considered for the upcoming hunting season. Bowfishing for catfish in Big Bear Lake, Lake Isabella and Sacramento/San Juaquin Delta was passed. page Community Robert Moore
2 As I write this article, it s tag application season throughout the western states! Wyoming kicked off with Elk application period beginning January 1 st to January 31 st and followed by Arizona application deadline for Elk & Antelope on February 13 th. I ll be sending out a separate to our membership for a complete list of deadlines for the all the western states. Those who are building points for limited quota hunts would do well by subscribing to GoHunt, an online source for tag application strategy and calculating draw odds and point creep for all big game in the western Dave baker states. This website is for members and a valuable resource for hunting big game. It s loaded with information for each unit in all the various states, except California. It s an excellent tool for all you DYI hunters. The ATA show has introduced some new and exciting gear for the bow hunter this year. I m really excited about a new offering from Mystery Ranch Pop Up 28 L ($299.00) hunting daypack with a meat hauling frame. Borrowing on the Load Carriage logic of the Guide Light Frame, the new POP-UP FRAME packs are a scaled-down design for day hunters who anticipate serious meat hauling. Super heavy-duty 7075 Aluminum pole stays collapse into the packs back-panel and compress out of the way when not in use. When it s time for the pack-out, the frame pops into place (much like tent poles) to support the heavy hauling. The new POP-UP 28 pack features this innovative, transforming frame that allows day hunters to haul out meat via the OVER- LOAD feature. This 28 L pack facilitates the minimalist hunting kit. It features Rip-Zip access to the main compartment along with zippered accessory compartments on the lid and the front. The side water bottle pockets and compression securely fit tripods and trekking poles. The cool thing about this pack is that you could put gear/clothing an etc. into a dry sack for multiple day hunt using the load carriage system and then leave your gear in spike camp and just carry your necessities for day hunts in the pack. This is a great pack for the solo hunter in California doing day hunts with ability to use load haul capability of packing out meat when the occasion arrives. An item that has already caused much controversy was debuted at the show; the Xero bow sight from Garmin. This is an autoranging digital laser bow sight that automatically measures distance to a target and provides a precise, virtual lighted holographic pin for the shot. It s a rather pricey bow sight/rangefinder combination starting at $ Currently Arizona is the only western state that allows such type of electronic sight to be used for hunting. I m certain that Pope & Young will have much to say about this sight in light of stance their on electronics used on a bow. In my estimation, this sight would disqualify any entry into Pope & Young. I m glad to announce that Maya will have a Broadhead League this year since the completion of the bike trail bridge. I know all our Bowhunters were disappointed last year when we cancelled the league and are eager to shoot the league in The league will begin on Saturday, May 12 th this year and will run for 10 weeks. Our 3D league will also run concurrently with the Broadhead league. It s good to be back on track with both of these league and we also are introducing new 3D targets for Look for more details in the future in Club s, Website, & Facebook. Dave Baker VP Hunting Hello Everyone Welcome to the New Year Our next Club Shoot will be February 11 th. Hope to see you at the range. Don t forget our Club Banquet, which will be held on Saturday march 17 th, at Wilderness Archery in Rocklin. This is pot luck style, last name starting A-L bring Salad, Desserts, Appetizer and M-Z bring a Main Hot Dish. Awards will be given out. Everyone is welcome. It is a great way to share and get to know other members. If you plan on attending, please contact me on my cell phone Our Around The World open is coming up in April. We will be needing a lot of help. 3 Cal Expo Sportsman show pictures Hello Maya members, Just a reminder that the work parties are held on the second Saturday of each month. Since there is a polar bear league going on, the work parties start at 11:00 a.m. Lunch will be served by Bob and Olivia, who are awesome cooks. Since the weather is starting to get better, there will be a lot of work that will need to be done and we will need as many people as possible that would like to help keep the range looking good. It s a good time to get to know other members and learn what it takes to have an awesome range. Thanks to all the members that come out to the work parties. Everyone s hard work, no matter what it is, is much appreciated. Brad Hastings Range Manager page 3
4 There are still 8 weeks remaining, is enough to still qualify for awards page 4
