H E W L E T T - P A C K A R D C O M P A N Y NOR CAL NEWSLETTER PG1 HEWLETT-PACKARD COMPANY PRESIDENT S REPORT: DAVE DEAS JULY/AUGUST 2012 It s that time again, seems like yesterday I wrote one of these. The 3D season is underway and if you haven t attended any of the shoots you are missing some real fun. Not only do you get to meet new people you get to improve your archery skills. So if you haven t attended one yet check the calendar and find one to participate in and I believe you will enjoy yourself more than you know. Not to mention it s a whole lot better than staying home and doing yard work. The CBH/SAA State Field Championship is history with a turn out about par with last years. If you have never shot an NFAA Field, Hunter, Animal round you owe it to yourself to put it on the calendar for next year. In the mean time you can participate in your Clubs monthly shoot to polish up your skills and become more familiar with the course of shooting. You shoot a minimum of 126 arrows (could be more depending on your animal round) which is a pretty good amount if you have never done it before. An average 42 target 3D shoot is 84 arrows, so the State Championship is a minimum of 42 arrows more, or about 33% more shooting. You do need to work on your stamina and get in some good practice or you may be a bit worn out by the end of the shoot. Keep a look out for further information on an Indoor Nor-Cal League taking place the fourth quarter of this year at Wilderness Archery in Rocklin. Don t have the course of fire all buttoned down yet, but it should be 12 Mondays of shooting with 8 counting for the final scores. It will be shot from 20 yards and closer which means you need to get those shorter ranges figured out. We re still looking for a location to hold the Nor-Cal Outdoor Shoot in 2013, so if you want to take that on please contact me. INSIDE THIS EDITION: VOLUME 1, ISSUE 6 PRESIDENT: DAVE DEAS DRDEAS@COMCAST.NET VICE PRESIDENT: FLORENCE CORDINGLEY FLORENCECORDINGLEY@ GMAIL.COM TREASURER/SECRET ARY PAUL CORDINGLEY LEG. REPORT: ROBERT MOORE MOOREROBT@SURE WEST.NET VP HUNTING: JIM WILLIAMS JEWILLIAMS88@NET ZERO.COM

I am still trying to put together a comprehensive list of the correct contact for each Club. Please send me an with the contact information and I will be able to get information out to the Clubs. Without voicing your opinions, issues and concerns you are leaving all the decisions up to a select few in the organization. Bagging Bigfoots: We don t know if this will change your plans, but just a quick reminder. There is no Bigfoot hunting in California. That s according to the Facebook post by the California Dept. of Fish and Game earlier this year. (Then bagged, tagged and blogged by Sacramento Muckracker Dan Bacher over at In order to take a nongame mammal legally in our state the animal would have to be listed in the California Code of Regulations which Bigfoot is not, the DFG reasons. Bacher quotes the DFG further that, if Bigfoot does not occur naturally in California then it would be defined as a non-game mammal and could not be taken legally unless Bigfoot was causing damage (in which case it could be depredated) or if a Bigfoot was considered a public safety threat (in which case the animal could be taken). The clarification was prompted by an article in Live Science magazine earlier this year, which quoted a Texas game official (of course) saying that since Bigfoot is not specifically protected in Texas law, the cryptid, may be hunted on private property with landowner consent by any means, at any time and there is no bag limit or possession limit. California s silence on the Bigfoot hunting is probably no big deal, since Sasquatch is, you know, not real. Chupacabras on the other hand. With that, thanks for listening, Dave Deas WILDERNESS ARCHERY 4870 Pacific Street Rocklin, CA For all your Archery and Professional needs

Vice President s Report: Florence Cordingley As Dave mentioned in his article we are looking to have a winter league for Nor-Cal this year. It should be a lot of fun and we hope to see many of you there. We really need contact information for our Regions Clubs, it would be so appreciated if you could take a few minutes to send it to either Dave or myself. An address, address or phone number, anything would help to keep us informed so we can keep you up to date on all the important issues. It would be even nicer if we got to see some of you at our meetings once in a while. We can t help you with your problems, if we don t know what they are. We hold our meetings the second Wednesday of each month. So far they ve been at Maya in Roseville, but if that s not convenient for you, let us know where else we might try to help make it easier for you. We try to hold the meetings to an hour, taking care of business without tying you up to long. The meetings are at 7p.m We promise not to bite, at least not too hard. We really are nice people. We are planning to go electronic with our newsletter by September, so if you don t want your newsletter by , please let me know and I ll be sure to mail you out a hard copy. If you do want it electronically just go onto our web-site and you will find it. We want to thank Jim Williams for putting on such a fun Carp Shoot for Nor-Cal June 9 th. The winds were so terrible that day it had to be a tremendous challenge. We also thank the brave archers that braved it and shot it. I understand in spite of all the wind, all had a great time. I want to thank Robert Moore for staying on with us as our Legislative Representative in spite of his busy schedule with CBH/SAA and all his class schedules for students as well as instructors for Maya. He does an outstanding job and we truly appreciate it all.

Legislative Report: Robert Moore The CBH/SAA state broad-head championship was held at Tejon Ranch on Memorial week-end. Reports of a record 198 shooters participated in this two day event. The Big Game Opportunity Drawing was held with all 250 tickets being distributed. The Fish and Game Commission (DFG) has adopted this year s big game regulations at their April meeting. Department of Fish and Game (DFG) have submitted proposals to FGC on upland bird regulations at the May 23 rd meeting. One change up for consideration is adding days to the Archery Pheasant season so it s 30 days long. The Sport Fishing Conservancy has made a request to FGC to possibly eliminate Bow-fishing for Sharks by changing section of the ocean fishing code. This section of code also specifically states what species can be bow fished in ocean waters. The actual language change has not introduced so it is no known if it will only pertain to sharks. It s apparent that the Humane Society of the United States has severely ramped up its efforts in its pursuits of eliminating all hunting, fishing and pet ownership as stated by the organizations President, Wayne Pacelle. CBH/SAA Alert: State Senate Bill SB1221 has been gut and amended from an air pollution bill to now eliminate the use of dogs in the hunting of bears and bobcats. The bill was modified by Senator Ted Leiu and coauthored by Darryl Steinberg with the help of the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS). The bill passed out of the Senate and is now in the Assembly Natural Resources, Water and Parks Committee with its first hearing set for June 26 th. Visit CBH/SAA web site at and go to the Legislative link. Information on sending letters, sample letters etc. are available to make it easier for you to voice your opinions. Sign up to the ALERT network and CBH/SAA will keep you informed on issues related to archery and hunting in a faster time frame than newsletters. Robert Treasurer/Secretary Report: Paul Cordingley I would like to thank Michael Vargas for his $100 donation to Nor-Cal, at the Carp Shoot June 9,2012. Thank you very much, glad to hear you had such a wonderful time. I understand Nor-Cal is one of the few if not the only Regional Organization to hold monthly meetings giving financial reports and by-monthly newsletters, keeping you informed as much as possible. Paul

V.P. Hunting Report: Jim Williams (H) ( C ) Jewilliams88@netzero.com We had Nor-Cal s Carp Shoot out in the Sutter Bypass on June 9, it was a tough day to shoot, as we had winds gusting up to mph, but some did quite well The wind was GREAT for keeping mosquitos at bay, but made it tough to see and hear the carp. Still, we had 22 shooters come out to support Nor-Cal, THANK YOU ALL! We had a lot of fun (two bows fell in the water, as well as one lady, thankfully all were recovered), a lot of folks who regularly shoot carp, some new people that now love it as well. Many were from the Yuba Sutter Bow-hunters. Many thanks to Rick Lee (they will have their Carp Shoot July 7 th in same spot, but before you read this), NO CARP is safe with these folks around! John Waddles and I will be attending this one. Not everyone turned in their fish (it was a TOUGH day) and some of us didn t get any, but that s the way it goes I handed out ribbons & pins for first, as well as ribbons for 2 nd and 3 rd places. The catagories were: 3 person Team Poundage, Individual Poundage, Largest Carp, and Smallest Carp. The winning teams are as follows (please keep in mind I have changed the team names as this is a family newsletter ): TEAM POUNDAGE: #1- Battle Pirates- 394 lbs. #2- Mighty Hunters- 164 lbs. #3- Fork Offs- 17lbs. INDIVIDUAL POUNDAGE: #1- Matt Gore- 114 lbs. #2- Michael Vargas- 100 lbs. #3- Aaron Gack 91 lbs. LARGEST CARP: #1- Matt Gore- 17 lbs. #2- Anthony Will- 14 lbs #3- J.D. Scheiber- 11 lbs. SMALLEST CARP: Kevin Pugh 19 inches Nor-Cal made $ from the shoot itself, and another $ donated by Michael Vargas. Again, my thanks to everyone who came out, the best part of this is seeing people you haven t seen in a while, the stories, the laughter, and all the fun we have together. Try it, you ll LIKE IT!!! Don t forget that Coastal Archery Deer starts up in mid. July, Inland Deer in August. Shoot straight and I hope your blood trails are short Let me know how you do!!

With deer hunting season coming upon us, I thought you might enjoy a few Venison recipes to enjoy your take. Enjoy, give them a try. ROASTING VENISON RECIPES- USE YOUR DUTCH OVEN This is a great recipe you can put in a Dutch oven and let roast all day. You will need a Venison roast, one cup of cola (any cola will do), a packet of dry Italian seasoning mix, and one small can of cream of mushroom or cream of celery soup. Pour a little oil (about ¼ cup) in the bottom of your Dutch oven and heat it up on a coal or wood fire. You can also do this on your camping grill, but a fire is better. Place all your ingredients in the Dutch oven, cover it and let it simmer on a low fire all day- this will melt in your mouth at dinner time and you can even add your own touches of spices or veggies to entice your taste buds. Another good roast for venison is not so much of a roast, but you do roast the venison and then use for sandwiches. You will need your Dutch oven again for this recipe. Before you leave home, marinate a good size roast overnight using a can of beer, one cup of good old Jack Daniels, although any whiskey will do, seasoning salt, a touch of basil, and one bay leaf. Take this along with you in a good sealed container or resealable plastic storage bag and keep in one of your coolers. At the campsite, start your coal or wood fire and hang your Dutch oven over the fire, again, we suggest about ¼ cup of oil in the bottom of the pan to avoid sticking. Place your venison and its marinated contents into the oven along with a can of crushed tomatoes, one onion, three or four potatoes (cut in chunks), and some hearty-cut carrots. Let this cook for three hours and you will be able to pull apart the venison roast for a good venisonsloppy Joe kind of recipe. Eat on your favorite bread or hard rolls. VENISON IN THE FRYING PAN A good cast iron skillet or heavy aluminum skillet are good cooking tools to bring along so you can create delicious venison camping recipes. A reliable and good frying recipe is to bring along some marinated chunks of venison-for marinating all you need is an entire jar of grainy mustard and five tablespoons of brown sugar. Keep in your cooler in a resealable plastic storage bag. To cook, use about two tablespoons of oil and fry the marinated venison chunks until cooked through. Mix in a tablespoon of soy sauce and one of Worchester sauce, add a few peppers and onions, and cook until meat is tender. This is a great stew-in-a-bowl and is good served with rolls. Try to think of all sorts of ways to cook up your venison in your skillets using different spices, cuts of venison meat, add bacon strips for hearty sandwiches, and other yummy ingredients you may have used in family camping recipes. These were just a few free recipes copied from Camping Recipes, on the internet. Try them, and I hope you enjoy them. Good luck on your hunts and good eating from the rewards.
