The reawakening of our forest is well underway and, in fact, almost complete. As you walk the trails at Suffolk Archers, your senses are filled with awareness of the burgeoning new life. The treetop canopy is in full bloom, the understory plants and bushes are awake, and if you stand still long enough, a chipmunk may run over your shoes. The forest trails are redolent with the process of a new life cycle, all over again. These are exciting times at Suffolk Archers! Part of that excitement is also because we are now in full swing with our event season. Saturday morning Skeet Shoots, the Turkey Shoot and the Spring Fling are already past us. But don t miss this upcoming adventure the famous Long Island Traditional with its unique and challenging novelty shots (e.g. walking, charging and flying animal targets) is almost upon us get ready for it this Sunday June 5th. Grab your recurve or long bow and come on down. It's the most fun you can have with your tights on and a bow in your hand. (Tights optional.) In fact, check our SA calendar online for the many events scheduled for the spring, summer and fall season. It s always a good way to test your skills and say hello to new and old faces. I'll close now because I'm on my way to the club. Another advantage to this time of year are the extended afternoons and beautiful evenings in the woods. We are lucky and blessed to have this small bit of paradise. From the Editor Enjoy the shot, Joe Lupo It feels like summer is finally upon us and I must say it is my favorite season. I know many say it s too hot, and yes the humidity will soon be here, which can be a bit rough. However I will take that over cold and snowy weather anytime. (Why do you think I happily ran Snowflake League for three years, which kept me inside and warm?) Summer also means we finally get to shed some heavyweight clothes in favor of shorts and t-shirts. Although, on second thought, when it comes to walking the trails at our club or any hike you may go on these days, you are better off with long sleeve shirt and pants to help ward
2 off mosquitoes and guard against ticks. Our Range Committee gives the yearly fight with these pests a valiant effort; unfortunately our club is a paradise for them too. So don on your loose fitting long-sleeve clothing, as well as the bug spray. Hopefully the work that was done in the field to eliminate the wetland areas and dunk tablets for our ponds will help lower their population this year. Some good news: I live in Huntington as well, and the other night, my wife and I saw a bat flying around. With some luck, maybe they will rebound from the white-nose syndrome that devastated the Long Island bat population a few years back, and they can help us combat the mosquito population as well. We do have a couple of bat houses on the property; it would be nice seeing them in use again. In the meantime, remember to take the proper precautions before you enjoy the club: safety check your equipment and grab a bottle of water to stay hydrated! Secretary s Notebook each and were guided along the trails in 5 separate groups by Rich & Gloria Berlin, Josh Pierno and Donna Reina. Thank you to Monica Thomas and Josh Pierno for setting up such a successful event! The weather held out everyone had a great time and no one got hurt. The first SEAL (Saturday Evening at the Lodge) potluck dinner for 2016 was an intimate affair with 12 attendees. Food and company were good. Delicious crabs, shrimp cocktail, spaghetti pie, yummy Josh Pierno chicken and rice, macaroni salad, and baked ziti were served up and for dessert a decadent death Saturday May 21st was a busy by chocolate cake and some wake up espresso day at Suffolk Archers. Not only brownies. No one left hungry! Next month June did we have the disk thrower pm will be the next SEAL with a seafood operating in the field we also theme!! Hope we see you there. had The Girl Scout Archery Donna Reina Challenge and our first SEAL (Saturday at the Lodge) event. SPECIAL EVENT Girl Scouts with archery experience from their camps visited our club to take a shot at 3D targets. We all had a successful day. With 23 Girl Scouts IBO World Champion ROD JENKINS will be visiting Suffolk Archers and giving a two day clinic on Building Your Shot From the Ground Up. For those of you lucky enough registered for his hands on lecture we look forward to hearing all about it. from 2nd grade thru 10th grade shooting at targets 1, 2, 3, 14, 16, 17, 18,19. Each girl came and left with 4 arrows Rod has agreed to stay around on Sunday July 31st and give a free lecture to our members after the days class is over, around 2:00pm. More details will follow as the event gets closer. 2
3 Rod Jenkins is a legendary archery coach and is the only man to ever win the IBO World Championships with both a compound and a longbow. Rod is a three-time Southeastern Field Champion, Service Rifle Champion, IPSC pistol champion, and USPSC Three Gun Champion. He has coached world and national archery champions in 3D, indoor, and field archery, not to mention countless successful hunters. Rod s methodology for building the perfect shot and ingraining it to the subconscious mind has been proven time and time again all over the world. Come let Rod teach you to build your shot from the ground up. Welcome Archers, Spring has arrived! I hope everybody is having a good time on all the weekend shoots. The club is in full bloom and the baby geese are walking all over the place. Please use caution while shooting around the geese. Especially in the field and over by the pond where they like to hang out and nest. Be safe out there. The club was just sprayed for ticks again - let s hope it kills them or at least cuts the number of ticks down. The club will be putting in a fire pit on the upper shooting range. We are currently working on a set of rules and guidelines for the use of the fire pit which will be adhered to very closely. These rules are being put into place to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for all our members. As you walk around the club property, if you see something wrong, please report it to the Range Captain, Joe Lupo and Pete Dunath so the issue can be address. To the crews that are volunteering to work on non-scheduled weekends, thank you and please remember wear the orange vests while your are out in the woods. It s the clubs policy and lets other members know your are there. Safety is everyone s responsibility. I would like to thank everyone for their well wishes on my recovery. I had back surgery with some compilations, but I m on the mend now. Until next time, have fun and be safe! Jim Felton, Safety Chairman Every so often something triggers a memory of meals we enjoyed when we were small. The other day the memory of the big bowl of pasta and meatballs my grandmother always would have on the table (buttered noodles for me) popped into my head. Funny thing happened., our VP Rob Wiest then sent over his grandma s recipe for stew and man does it sound good can t wait to try this one myself. SWEET & SOUR GAME STEW Ingredients 1# cubed game meat 2 tbsp cooking oil 1 cup chopped carrots 1 cup sliced onions 8oz. tomato sauce ¼ cup brown sugar ¼ cup cider vinegar 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 4 tbsp cornstarch ½ cup hot water Directions 1. Brown the meat in hot oil 2. Add the tomato sauce, cider vinegar, brown sugar and Worcestershire sauce and simmer until meat begins to get tender (approximately 2 hours, but varies depending on the meat used) 3. Mix the cornstarch with the hot water to form a slurry and then add the slurry to the pot 4. Add the carrots and onions and simmer another 30 minutes 5. Salt and pepper to taste 6. Serve over pasta, rice or potatoes. 3
