1 THE ARROW Suffolk archers and bowhunters news letter Volume 2 Issue 3 Editors Jill Goeckner & Josh Pierno JUNE 2013 Letter from the President Things are really jumping at Suffolk Archers. We are full swing into our Calendar of Events. There is something for everyone: 3D, Field, Knock-a-block, the LI Traditional, Family Day. I would like to thank all the people who volunteer their time to run these events. I would also like to encourage newer members to become more involved. Us old guys tend to get a little burnt out over time. We need new blood to come in and help run things. When new people step up, they bring new ideas and an influx of enthusiasm. That is what keeps making events better and better. The people who do get more involved also start to build new bonds within the club and new friendships. One of the committees that I have been involved in is the AED Committee. An Automated Electronic Defibrillator is a device that can deliver an electrical shock to the heart in the case of cardiac arrest. This committee started from a member s suggestion at a general meeting. The idea to purchase a device was approved by the members, and we ran with it. After purchasing the device, we then registered with NY State. After that, we realized that we needed to have members certified in the use of the device. We had our first certification class 2 years ago, at which time 15 members were certified. I am pleased to report that on May 11, 2013, we held our 2 nd certification class at which time 21 members were certified. In conjunction with this, on June 1, 2013, there will be a First Aid class at the club. Both of these events have instructors from The American Heart Association. Thank you to the participants in these classes. Their knowledge helps to make our club a safer place. So, I say again, enjoy the club. Take advantage of all that we have to offer. Most of all, have a wonderful summer. ~Jim Dear Club Mates, Going on my fourth year in Baghdad, Iraq, I'm sorely missing archery and our great club. The abstinence made me come up with a temporary solution; it's by no means perfect, but at least I get to maintain my draw muscles and fling some ridiculously heavy arrows at palm trees! Better than nothing right? Hope you are all doing well and that you have recovered from that seriously unpleasant lady, Sandy.. Best, Daniel Roos Letter from a Member Security Officer, UNAMI SSI Team 3 REMINDER: THE NEXT GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING IS ON JUNE 19TH, SA LODGE 8pm FAMILY DAY JUNE 23, 9am KNOCK A BLOCK JULY 14TH, 9am FIELD SHOOTS CHECK SCHEDULE FOR DATES

2 CLUB NEWS The 3D Committee puts a lot of time, effort and thought into the placement of the 3D targets on the course. Shooting positions, target positions, back ground, other shooting alleys, and missed shots are all taken into account. Please do not take it upon yourself to move or reposition any of the 3D targets on the course. If there is something you are concerned about, have a suggestion, or you see something you like out on the course please contact me at grnknight94@yahoo.com and put SA 3D in the subject line. If a target is leaning over please take a moment to straighten for your fellow members but leave it in its current position. Thank you! Josh Pierno, 3D Committee Boy Scouts at Suffolk Archers On Saturday, May 4, Suffolk Archers hosted the scouts of Troop 214. They were a very enthusiastic group of young archers with varying degrees of experience ranging from the accomplished to the rank beginner. Regardless of their level of experience, they all had a wonderful time roaming our woods and drawing down on 3D animals, bulls eyes and knock-a-blocks. A big thank you to Nick Domingo, Josephine Zollo and Joe Klotz for their time and efforts in making the afternoon an exciting and memorable experience for these young archers. Joe Lupo Hunters Lair It s Spring and to the hunters of the club that means Turkey Season. So far the season, as of this date, has been very slow as no one has come forward with a report their harvest. As for me, I harvested a bird on the morning of May 5th. A small Jake nothing to brag about, but I got a bird. Someone ask me the other day, how do I get a bird with a bow? My response was LEAVE YOUR SHOTGUN HOME. It s hard enough to get a bird with a shotgun. With a bow you need to be fully concealed. That means total camouflage from head to toe and be very still. Hunting from a ground blind is a good idea. Your bow should be set on poundage that you can hold for a longer time than you would for deer. I would reduce the bow by 5 lbs., believe me it makes a difference. There are broadheads on the market that are designed for turkey hunting, but the broadheads that you use for deer hunting will work as well. It s all about shot placement when it comes to turkey. A head shot is the best, a Texas heart shot (center of the tail feathers from the rear) is deadly, and a mid-body shot just above the leg that would break the wing is also a good shot but get ready to run after that bird. I have been turkey hunting for over 25 years and all I can say is that I find it more rewarding than deer hunting. Not to mention that it has made me a better deer hunter. If you are interested in getting started with turkey hunting see one of your BHC members, they can help you get started. SPRING TIME IN THE WOODS IS A GREAT TIME TO EXPERANCE NATURE. IT IS A TIME OF REBIRTH IN THE WOODS AND ALL LIVING THINGS. Turkey Hunting in the mornings and trout fishing in the afternoon you can t get better than that!!! )) >Your BHC Tackle Tips I am sure we have all witnessed this at one time or another: you are at a big sporting goods store and there is a guy 2

3 eagerly buying a new bow. The salesman sells him the latest drop away arrow rest, a sight with all of the latest vibration dampening stuff on it, a quiver with a camo pattern that matches the bow and a dozen arrows oh yeah, I almost forgot, throw a peep sight on there too. Not thinking about it, the salesman pulls a peep sight off the pegboard and puts it in the string. This works for most people in the beginning, shooting 20 or 30 yards, occasionally out to 40 yards with mediocre accuracy and consistency. But if you are looking to improve your accuracy for both hunting and target shooting you should consider your peep sight as part of a sight system and not as an accessory. The distance between the peep sight at full draw to the sight pin or lens is known as the sight radius. The greater the sight radius, the better the accuracy. As the sight radius increases, the apparent size of the sight housing gets smaller. An easy way to improve your sighting consistency, is to center your peep sight around the sight housing the same way each and every shot. Having a sight picture that allows you to view the entire sight housing with the least amount of space around the housing will give you better consistency. Bow hunters and target shooters have different requirements regarding peeps and sights. Bow hunters need a sight system that is compact so it will not get in the way of branches and brush and easily seen in low light conditions. Bow hunters will generally want a larger peep sight to let in more light and to center the pin housing more accurately with the sight moved in closer to the riser. Target shooters, on the other hand, want as much pinpoint accuracy as they can get. Target shooters usually have the luxury of shooting with better lighting conditions and will extend their sights out away from the riser; this makes the housing appear smaller. A 3 smaller aperture peep sight is used to make centering the housing easier and more consistent. Most sights on the market have two or more sets of mounting holes, and peep sights are inexpensive. For very little money you can experiment with some different combinations of peep sights and mounting positions to see if you can improve your accuracy and consistency. FLETCH Field Archery This month s Field Archery article will focus on Suffolk Archer s relationship to the National Field Archery Association (NFAA). Our Field Archery Course at Suffolk Archers is an official NFAA course. SA has met all the NFAA requirements including 28 targets with specific distances as well as safety criteria. The NFAA also sponsors State, Sectional ( New York is part of the Mid-Atlantic States Section), and National Championships. These shoots are further divided into indoor and outdoor events. The National Outdoor Championships are usually held on the west coast. However, every 3 or 4 years the Championships are held at an east coast location. Some of our SA Field Archers, such as. Jim Fream, Tony DiDio, George Thies, and Jimmy King have participated in many of these NFAA Championships. Last year the National Outdoor Championships were hosted by the Mechanicsburg Archery Club in PA. Joe Pace and Lew Barbera participated in this 2012 National Championship. Joe and Lew competed over a 5 day period. They can attest that Field Archery can provide a great deal of enjoyment. If you are interested in learning more about Field Archery, please contact any member of the Field Committee. We are eager to share the particulars of this great sport with all SA members. Lew Barbera, Field Committee

4 Hunter s Pot Work Days BBQ Turkey Thighs with Maple Bourbon BBQ Sauce The work days give the members three big opportunities. They help us keep the club in shape so we can continue to enjoy the beauty of Suffolk Archers. They also give us the opportunity to meet and work with some of our fellow members who we normally would not. Oh, and of course, we can t forget about the work credits! The first two work days of 2013 have been completed. So far the trails have cleared and many new sections of fencing has been installed and painted but there is still much left to do. If you still need to satisfy your work obligations contact the range committee and see where your time and talents can be applied. This recipe works with either domestic or wild turkey. A good heritage breed turkey is very similar to a wild one. But even a Butterball would work well here. The key is low and slow. This is barbecue, not grilling. Serves 2-4 Prep Time: 5 minutes - Cook Time: 3 hours 2 tablespoons vegetable oil 2 turkey thighs Salt 1/4 cup unsalted butter 1 medium onion, grated 1 cup bourbon 1/2 cup crushed tomatoes 1 cup cider vinegar 1/2 cup maple syrup (or to taste) 1 tablespoon molasses (for color) 1/4 cup Worcestershire sauce Tabasco sauce to taste Smoked salt (optional) Set your grill up where the fire is on one side of the grill, and the turkey thighs are on the other. Coat the turkey thighs in vegetable oil and salt well. Lay them skin side down on the cooler side of the grill. Let the turkey thighs cook without sauce while you are make it. Make the sauce by sautéing the grated onion in the butter for a few minutes. You don t want the onion to brown, but you do want it to cook enough to lose that raw onion smell and flavor. This should take 5 minutes on medium heat. Add the remaining ingredients and mix well. Boil this down by 1/3. Adjust for heat and salt. If you want, puree the sauce in the blender. If you puree the sauce it will be thicker. Return sauce to the stove top over very low heat stirring the sauce occasionally. Paint the sauce on the thighs. Cover and cook until the meat is just starting to fall off the bone, flipping every 30 minutes or so to paint with the maple-bourbon BBQ. This should take between 2-4 hours, depending on how old your bird was. ~Enjoy 4 Knock-A-Block Committee We are looking forward to a great Knock-A-Block tournament on July 14th. We are currently looking for several members who are willing to set the course before the event and to help tally the scores during the event. If you are willing to help please contact Wayne Spraque at cardone15@aol.com. Not only will you help put on a great event for your club but you will earn some of your work hours too!
