The crocuses and tulips are coming up and soon our field shooters will be starting their shooting season. Once again we will be running a 3D shoot along side the field shoots. If you have the opportunity, try shooting both. They can easily be done in the same morning and you might be surprised how shooting paper targets can help your accuracy during the other shoots we have throughout the year. Plus, the field shoot may offer you the challenge of shooting at longer distances then you usually do. Speaking of other shoots, Spring also brings with it the start of our busy club calendar of events. Please visit our website, suffolkarchers.com, to see the newly updated calendar for It has both a monthly view and list view option in case you like to print it out for future reference. Besides the usual 3D shoots the calendar also has all the Aerial Disk Shoots, American Round shoots and the Practice Days for our young friends from St. Anthony's High School. Please keep in mind that during these three events and any other that occur in the field through out the year, that the Field and Target #21 will be closed to all other shooters. This is for your safety and theirs. However there will be opportunities to safely bypass the Field and Target #21 during the shoot so you can enjoy the rest of the targets on the south side of the club. Spring also brings along another exciting activity, Spring Turkey Season. By the time you read this the Turkey Shoot will have already occurred. If our prior Turkey Shoots have any foreshadowing on it then I am sure Jack and his team did another awesome job of challenging our shooters and prepping our hunters for their up coming trek into the fields and woods to take on the challenge of harvesting a turkey with a bow. You can find some of the hunting regulations and tips later on in this issue, but always check your hunters guide or the DEC website, for the most current rules and regulations. So good luck, have fun but most of all think safe & be safe. Finally, we have some new members to the club and a couple more getting ready to join us. If you see a new face or someone who looks like they could use a little guidance, please take the opportunity to introduce yourself and offer assistance. Remember we were all in their shoes at one point. That is part of what makes Suffolk Archers what it is. In the past I have praised the Board of Directors at the general meetings for doing a good job. Lately, I have observed that the Board of Directors have been taking short cuts during the general meetings. They are as follows: Roberts Rules are not being followed. No committee reports are being read. No Secretary reports are being read from the previous BOD meetings and general meetings. The previous Board of Directors had to institute and follow all of the above. Further observations: Where are the new toilets? Has anybody seen them? It seems that certain individuals from the club feel that it is their club only and run it accordingly. Last time I looked, Suffolk Archers is a general members club. It is always the same members who attend the general meetings and step up to the plate. Kudo's to all of you. The club needs more people to get involved and attend the meetings. Lately, we have not even had enough members attend the general meeting to take a vote. "No member can complain about the club and how it is being run if you don't get involved". 3 To all our hunters, good luck and good hunting! Turkey Hunting Regulations Opens May 1st & Closes May 31st In the Spring you may take two bearded birds. You may only take one bird per day. Immediately after taking a turkey, fill out the carcass tag and attach it to the bird. You do not need to save and send in turkey legs in the spring. You do need to take careful spur, beard, and weight measurements for reporting. Spur measurements: spurs should be measured from the tip of the spur to the base of the spur, where it emerges from the scaly part of the leg. Measure to t the nearest 1/4 inch. Do not measure to the forward edge of the leg, only to the base of the spur. Beard Measurements: beards should be measured from the tip of the beard to the base, where it emerges from the skin. Butt the end of your ruler against the base of the beard and extend the beard along the body of the ruler. Measure to the nearest 1/4 inch. Record the weight to the nearest pound. ** You must report taking a turkey within 7 days** via the DECALS Online Harvest Reporting system or by calling Turkey Hunting Safety Tips Most turkey hunting injuries happen when one hunter stalks another. Don't Stalk Turkeys. It doesn't work and it is dangerous. Never wear turkey colors - red, white or blue. Assume anything that sounds like a turkey is another turkey hunter. Call with a large tree at your back. If you see another hunter...don't MOVE. Never wave, whistle or make any turkey call or animal sound. Speak Up in a loud, clear voice to identify yourself. Wrap an orange vest around a tree near your calling location to let other hunters know you are there. Be sure of your target and beyond!! Winter is finally over and we're all looking forward to the 2017 Field Archery season. All the target faces are now in perfect condition. Some of the target butt screen faces were made of a hard wire screen which caused some arrows to bounce off. In addition, there will be a major change to the field course targets. Specifically, target 5 and target 6 will no longer stand side-by-side. What used to be target 4 will now become target 5 and a new target butt will be installed at a new location and labeled target 4. All other targets will remain in place. Finally, our first Field Shoot will be on April 23rd. Several changes were made over the last two months. Therefore to avoid confusion, our Field Archery shoot dates are as follows: April 23th June 25th July 16th August 13th April 30th July 2th July 30th May 28th July 9th August 6th WHETHER YOU RE A BEGINNER, A WEEKEND WARRIOR, OR A SEASONED PRO, C & B ARCHERY HAS SOMETHING TO OFFER. 4 Directions First, you have to carefully separate the skin from the body. If you do poke through the skin once or twice, you re still fine. Starting at the neck put a hand between the meat and the skin, working towards the top of the breast. Feel where the skin connects to the breast and begin working your fingers in between, separating skin from breast. Continue working your hands down the breast towards the back of the bird. Combine 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper with the bacon, onion, garlic and herbs. Spread mixture in the area you ve created between the skin and the breast. Place turkey, breast side down, in a roasting pan. Arrange carrots, celery, potato and onion under each side of the breast to keep it from falling over. If it still won t stay up, it s no big deal. Just flip it over to the other side after about 45 minutes of cooking time. Pour broth into pan and cover pan with foil. Place into a 350 degree preheated oven Depending on the size of your turkey, cooking time will average between 1 and 1 1/2 hours. Remove when breasts are 155 degrees. Turkey Roasted Wild Well if you have not figured it out yet, Spring Turkey Season is just around the corner, so why not do a recipe for that freshly harvested bird don t worry you can buy one too (we won t tell anyone) and the recipe will work just as well. 1 wild turkey, skin intact salt and freshly ground black pepper 4 strips bacon, diced (an apple smoked or hickory adds an extra nice flavor 1/2 cup finely diced onion 3 cloves garlic, minced 1/2 cup fresh herbs, your choice minced 3 carrots, whole 3 celery stalks, whole 2 medium potatoes, cut into 4 wedges 1 medium onion, cut into 4 wedges 2 cups chicken broth large piece heavy-duty aluminum foil Allow to rest for 5 10 minutes before carving. If you are cooking a wild turkey and possible even that store bought one the legs will not be tender! But don't toss them away just yet! Remove them and use to make stocks for future dishes or soups. Just your request to arrow@suffolkarchers.com 5 TACKLE TIPS You guessed it, more Turkey talk. Hey it s Spring and while some of you are gearing up for baseball others are gearing up for some good spring turkeys. And gearing up is just the topic we are going to look into. Let s face it the stores are loaded full of the newest greatest way to separate you from your money but what s really needed and what s just nice to have. The first thing you will need is a good set of camo, and we mean head to toe camo. From a good light weight face mask to gloves and boots. Turkeys can see in color and you need to Cover your head, hands and face to keep turkeys from picking you out of cover. When buying your camo try to keep in mind where you will be hunting. No use in buying a green based pattern if most of your hunting is done in a tan back drop. Also view the pattern from far away, even though that pattern looks cool up close some of it turns out to look just dark and black from a few steps back. Also keep in mind what the inside of your blind looks like if you are using one. Next up, and while not truly necessary it will help make your morning easier, is a good turkey hunting vest. A basic vest will help you organize your gear, provide a comfortable spot to sit, and a helpful way to haul your trophy out of the woods. Just remember the more gear you pack in there the heavier the vest can become and buy the time you back all those new calls and decoys in there it can get pretty heavy. A couple, two or three, good calls is next. Weather you choose an early morning owl hoots to midday crow calls, a sharp and loud sound will set off a toms instinct to gobble and reveal his location. Locator calls are a tried and true method of giving you the edge on your hunt. A box call is a vital addition to your gear. Box calls carry sound farther and cut the wind locating and calling toms with clear and true turkey sounds. No matter what type of call you choose practice with it before the season starts so when its time to use it you can make it sound just like the real thing. Finally, of course, is knowledge. Knowing your preys habits and behaviors is the greatest tackle a hunter has. That and of course a razor sharp broadhead and the all the practice they put in at Suffolk Archers before the season!
