THE ARROW Suffolk archers and bowhunters news letter Volume 1 Issue 41 Editors Josh Pierno & Jill Goeckner August 2012 A Letter from the President For those of you who didn t participate in this year s Suffolk Archer s Family Day all I can say is you missed a great party! Right from the start, this year s FD committee tried to create a block party atmosphere while still accommodating those wanting to shoot their bows. The solution: a15 arrow mini-shoot restricted to the north side of the archery course. The south side of the course was reserved for the children who participated in a treasure hunt and a wild animal obstacle course. It sounds cliché but everyone had a great time watching the children slide under, jump-over and run around our 3D animals. While the children played lunch was served and music was provided by disc jockey, Lloyd. Nearly everyone who attended had their picture taken by profession photographer and member Ralph Macia. You can see those photos posted on our website gallery, The actual archery competition, because it was an abbreviated event, left the competitors plenty of time to join in the festivities. Here s a list of the winners: Luigi Ienopoli Compound (M) Bob Chambers Traditional (M) Karen Kucherick Compound (W) Kim Chambers Traditional (W) Cameron Carrella (Y) An event of this scope requires lots of manpower. Thanks go to the following people for their contribution: Paul Caleca (Next Year s Committee Chair) Rob Wiest Adam Nomar Ken Messemer Ophelia Romero Ralph Macia Mike Anderson Karen Agnese Tony Agnese Melissa Agnese Nick Domingo Josh Pierno Tracy Carrella Ericka Berman Jacob Levesque I also want to thank the Jones Family for their attendance. It was the late Mike Jones s idea to create a family event at our club. Unfortunately Mike is no longer with us but Dianne and her family helped us celebrate. On this day we also dedicated a shooting position to Mike. A marble stone etched by Paul Hatch will keep Mike in our thoughts, in perpetuity. Photo Courtesy of Ralph Macia There s plenty of summer remaining, go out and enjoy the club! Tommy SA President Improvement & Renovation Programs Continue at Suffolk Archers In recent years Suffolk Archers has worked steadily to make the improvements necessary to keep our club and property a premier archery facility in the tri state area. Since the completion of our new lodge in 2009, we have widened and resurfaced our road permitting better parking and traffic flow to accommodate our growing membership. This past winter, our property was serviced by a professional arbor team who remove dangerous trees and overhead dead wood making our trails safer and more enjoyable. Our aging field course was given a much needed facelift with new target butts and frames all in keeping with the woodland setting. REMINDER: THE NEXT GENERAL MEMBERSHIP MEETING IS ON AUGUST 15th, SA LODGE. FIELD SHOOT CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP AUGUST 12th, RANGE WORK DAY AUGUST 19th, HUNTER 3D SHOOT AUGUST 26th
The next area in need of our attention is the north side practice range. At the June general meeting, club members voted to form a committee to spearhead this renovation project. A three phase plan was designed by the committee. Contractors were consulted for phase one to help with design and to give price quotes. I am happy to report that we have come up with a plan that will add more than 2000 square feet of usable space. It will accommodate park benches, picnic tables and other structures while maintaining the rugged woodland landscape that our club is famous for. Come to the August meeting at Suffolk Archers for more details and for a final voting decision on this much needed renovation project. Joe Lupo Renovation Committee Chairman Hidden Treasure by Joe Anderson As I stare at the blank page on my computer screen, trying to think of something to write about, I can only think of how fortunate we are to have a place like Suffolk Archers. Who would ever think, in the middle of Long Island suburbia, one would find a woodland archery course? It s a special place and indeed a treasure! What makes Suffolk Archers so special? Mother Nature does her part, but I think the members do the rest. Behind the scenes, we have members who dedicate their time and energy to make Suffolk Archers more enjoyable for all. From the board members, to the folks who set up the shoots, to the volunteers that work to maintain the course, to the cooks who provide us with the delicious food at the BBQ s...all do a great job, and in my opinion, all deserve a thank you! Thank you everyone for all your efforts...enjoy the rest of the summer! The Hunters Lair Opening Day will be OCT 1 in the Southern Zone & Westchester Well they did it: an October 1st opener will finally occur this year! This was a long time coming; the bow hunters of NY along with NYBH Inc has worked very hard for this. The crossbow issue remains the same REGULAR SEASON ONLY (so far). I hope this change gets more hunters in to the woods and spikes some more interest in the sport of bow hunting. If you are a newbie to bow hunting come to the club and ask questions, your bow hunting committee is always available for you, best time to catch one of us is on Sunday mornings. REMEMBER, JUST ASK! Your Big Buck, Big Doe, Big Game contests all start with the beginning of hunting season. And don t forget to keep in mind someone to nominate for our Bow Hunter of the Year Award. Go to the club website click on bow hunting committee for all the contest rules. Check the NY DEC website for other changes as well. All hunters should check the DEC website, as often there is a lot of good info there. Along with this good news, we also take the time to remind all of our hunters about SAFETY. We can not stress this enough! Check your bow (string, cams, limbs, etc.). Visiting one of the local pro shops is also a good idea. Check your tree stands & your safety harnesses. You may not want to spare the time while chasing that Big Buck, but here s a thought: it s even harder hunting out of a wheelchair. So get out, do your scouting, sharpen up those broad heads, get your bow ready, and get yourself in shape for another great hunting season. GOOD LUCK! SHOOT BETWEEN THE HEART BEATS Your Bow Hunting Committee NOTE: For the full hunting season map go to the DEC web site outdoor/28605.html 2
Knock A Block Results Traditional shooters were broken up into two classes. (There were not enough compound shooters this year to run the tournament so they shot for fun. ) A Class B Class 1st Arte Lipinski 1st Bob Chambers 2nd Joe Munno 2nd Paul Schmidt 3rd Jeff Milano 3rd Dennis Blanco I Want Your Cans & Bottles Too! Over the past few years our club as grown both in members and events, and as such we are producing more and more garbage. As outdoor enthusiast and hunters our environment is very important to our sport and recreational activities. The phrases pack it in, pack it out and take only memories leave only foot prints is something that we all should strive for in our daily lives both out in nature and at our club. To this end we will be renewing our effort to have a successful recycling program at our club. Recently you may have noticed a couple new blue recycling bins placed around the lodge and practice range. All that we ask of you is to you place your empty water bottles with the labels on and soda cans in the blue recycling bins when you are done with them. We will make every effort to have the bins emptied once a week or more when it becomes necessary. The goal of the program is to help keep our club and environment just a little cleaner and every individual can help. If you see cans, bottles or trash lying around the course please pick them up and place them in the proper receptacle. Thank you for your help! Your SA Green Team Annual Wild Game Dinner Dear members, I hope by this time you all know that we are having our annual wild game dinner September 22 nd. It will once again be held at the very attractive Garden City Casino and Chef Peter will again create interesting and delicious entrées and appetizers. So far our inventory includes venison, moose, bear, hog, 51 Cathedral Ave Garden City NY mallard duck, chukka partridge and some rabbit. All game was harvested by Club members and generously donated for the dinner. We will also have a raw bar and fish, hopefully we ll get donations and not have to buy it. The current plan is to have Ernie prepare 2 types of ravioli from the harvest, and 3 types of sausage from another friend. Vegetarians and vegans can have meals arranged for Photo Courtesy of Stephanie Tracy them as well. As always the Chef furnishes pasta dishes and salads, and all soft beverages and deserts. Last year many of our guests were able to leave with doggie bags. The Casino is limited to150 people. Tickets went on sale about a month ago and we have sold or reserved almost 100 already. If we hold tickets, they must be paid for in about a week. Obviously it is on a first come first served basis. Any questions or to purchase tickets call Bob Barbieri , Karen Kucherick , or Joe Lupo We have many quality prizes and expect many more for door prizes and raffles. A 50/50 will be run as well. Prices are $45 for members and $50 for nonmembers; cash bar for all. Wild Game Dinner Committee 3
Tackle Tips This month I would like to take a step out of the norm for this column. Instead of talking about all the useful items out there to buy and the gimmicky ones too, I would like to give a nod to the perhaps the greatest tackle that I can think of when it comes to archery or any other endeavor in life: KNOWLEDGE. Or more specifically, knowledge that is gathered and passed down to us from those who have been there. Keeping it in the realm of archery, I have had some great people standing just over my shoulder giving me direction, tips and encouragement. Helping me to hit that bulls-eye, but also helping me to understand my misses too. Little things like touching the nock and not allowing the string to twist within it, or gripping the bow to tight causing my shot to go left. It was the knowledge and time that these people so generously offered me that turned archery into much more than just a past time. Recently I had the opportunity to be the person just over someone else s shoulder. During the Family Day event I found myself kneeling on the ground of our practice range teaching children to shoot. Some were just reaching their teens years while others were smaller than the bow they were holding. From finger placement to anchor point to release. The joy on their faces when the arrow hit the target was second only to the joy in my heart. It was my chance to honor those who taught me by passing that knowledge down to the next generation. It s been said that the children are the future of our sport. The movies have brought archery into the spotlight and with the Olympics about to start, now is a great time to further that interest. So take that knowledge you have gathered and pass it on! I guarantee you will enjoy the experience as much as those who are benefiting from your knowledge. Be safe and have fun! FLETCH Hunter s Pot Venison Burgers on the Grill Venison is quite lean, so avoid overcooking it or you will end up with a dried out piece of meat. The grill is the perfect place to cook venison because of the high, intense heat that allows for quick cooking times. Because of the low fat content, venison can stick to your grill so brush it light with oil before it hits the hot cooking surface. Cook your Venison to about 145 degrees F. The burger should be served medium rare to medium at most, it is important not to overcook ground venison or you'll end up with a crunchy char-burger. Ingredients 1 lb ground venison (this is a great time to use that neck meat) 1 to 2 tbsp oil (canola, peanut, or whatever you like) 1 tsp Worcester sauce salt and pepper to taste Non-stick spray Instructions 1. Heat grill to a high heat 2. Mix all ingredients together, except the non-stick spray. 3. Form meat into four patties. 4. Spray the grill with non-stick spray. Cook patties about 3-4 minutes per side. Using a big spatula place burgers on grill, due to less fat the burgers have a tendency to fall apart easier and the bigger spatula will help with moving and flipping. Dress your burger to taste. I find a nice slice of cheddar and a thick BBQ sauce works wonderfully. If your daring add a sunny side up egg to the top of the burger. At first bite the yolk will run down the meat making a wonderful addition to the burger. 4
SADMC TEAM EXTENDS PROGRAM Andy and Damon continued their hard work over the winter to extend the SADMC program. Their efforts have resulted in adding an additional two farms to the program with a total of 75 acres. The program now has 27 active bow hunters all of whom dedicate many hours in the field. Thanks to the hard work and dedication of the SADMC members, they have been able to donate 75 lbs. of venison for the game dinner and plan to continue SADMC Hunters John Vazlopes & Mike Klauber their efforts to keep the freezer full for the club. Andy chairman of SADMC notes; this is a big step for the SADMC program and its members. Trading Post NOTICE TO MEMBERS: This space is always available for FREE to those members who wish to swap, trade, or sell their archery equipment and/or provide notice of upcoming hunts. However, Suffolk Archers does not specifically endorse the products or hunting opportunities listed here.
