2 Issue January From the President: Happy New Year! I m Larry Readal, the BBH President for I am honored to serve the Club. If you don t know me, here s some background: I m a retired Navy guy (I was a quitter; I only did 25 years). I joined the Club in 2003 for a few years then moved away for a while and joined again in 2013, and have been the Activities Director and Secretary/ Treasurer. I grew up a gun hunter and got into archery in 2002 because I wanted to hunt but there were no places to gun hunt that were as close to me as Fort Belvoir, so I bought a bow and got started. First, I would like to thank Bakari Dale for the GREAT job he did as President over the last two years! Read his December Newsletter article there is a HUGE list of accomplishments the Club has achieved during his tenure. The Club is better as a result of his leadership, so THANKS, Bakari, for showing us what right looks like! As incoming President, I think Belvoir Bowhunters is doing great! We do a lot of, and a variety of, archery and hunting stuff, and I want to keep doing what we re doing. But what really matters is what the MEMBERSHIP of BBH wants to do. More, or less of certain events, or different types of events this is all up to the desires of membership and what they want out of their Club. It s worth it every once in a while to dig out our Club Constitution to remind ourselves what we re all about. Below is what the Constitution says the Club s purpose is. I think we re pretty much on track; what do you think? The purpose of the Club shall be to develop and perpetuate archery and bowhunting programs on Fort Belvoir; to cooperate with and assist with the Directorate of Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation (DFMWR), Fort Belvoir in furtherance of archery and bowhunting programs; to cooperate and assist conservation organizations in promoting preservation of natural resources and wildlife; to promote and encourage all approaches to competitive field archery; to promote means and opportunity for the education of nonmembers with respect to archery and bowhunting; to require the highest standards of sportsmanship and ethical conduct in all phases of archery of bowhunting; to conduct charitable activities in the name of the Club. My emphasis areas as President are: Continue to do the events & activities that support the above purpose statement FUN did I mention FUN? As a Club, if we ain t having fun, we ain t doing it right! Folks should want to support our events because they have a good time at the event and feel it was worthwhile. Professionally and smoothly executed meetings, events and activities. Nobody wants to come out to stuff that is halfway thrown together, and folks deserve a great event. More membership involvement. The Club has the same bunch of folks doing all the work. For a 250+ member Club, it doesn t seem right for the same people to come Page 2 of 13
3 Issue 283 January 2018 to the monthly meeting. Almost all Clubs have this problem, I think. I d like for us to figure out how to get more folks involved, which makes it easier for everybody, and will result in better events. Strong marketing/advertisement/communication of events and activities so everyone knows what the Club is doing and when. Strong communication with and good relationship with the VBA and other Clubs. Strong communication with and good relationship with Outdoor Recreation. I look forward to serving as your President, and seeing you at our next meeting! Larry Page 3 of 13

He asked that IBO members please provide information to him when they renewed. The new timer/clock has been ordered and will be here before February s meeting. Upcoming Shoots: * SUNDAY, 21 9:00AM * SUNDAY, 11 9:00AM * STATE INDOOR is FEBRUARY (last weekend in February) we ll need a lot of help, from getting the range ready, to registration, to food, to line coaches. Please help your Club! Publicity Director Greg Thompson (Acting) was absent but President Readal announced that WE NEED A VOLUNTEER FOR THIS POSITION FOR 2018 still. Please continue to send pictures and articles everyone really likes pictures in the newsletter, so thanks to all who have submitted pics! Please keep sending them in. Activities Director Jerry Michonski made an announcement about the upcoming Great American Outdoor Show on Monday 5 February, and that there was a signup sheet going around. Please see the Secretary/Treasurer Mirza Strujo to pay for the trip. February s meeting will also be a SWAP meeting so bring your stuff to trade with fellow hunters. Jerry will also be doing a sausage making session at the end of the meeting. Upcoming events: * Bus Trip to the GREAT AMERICAN OUTDOOR SHOW is MONDAY, 5 FEBRUARY AT 0700 and is $55 per rider, includes travel, breakfast, and admission to the show. Don t forget to bring your bow and shoot the 3D course! * SWAP Night at FEB Meeting - bring your stuff to SWAP! * VBA BANQUET is 7 APRIL. Location is TBD but likely Harrisonburg/New Market. This is a fun banquet. It would be good to have Belvoir well represented and take home all the awards! *The WILD GAME DINNER is SAT, 28 APR out at Park West Lions Club in Manassas! YOU CAN DONATE MEAT NOW! Also, Jerry needs prize donations, especially ladies and children. *Jerry mentioned he is always looking for ideas for presentations at our meetings. Sgt At Arms Valerie Clay is excited to be the new Sgt At Arms and she asked for volunteers to help by bringing a dish for any meetings or shoots. The First indoor shoot is Sunday 21 January and we will have Coffee, Donuts. The Menu for the February meeting will be Chicken and Rice soup. Page 11 of 13
12 Range Warden James Blake reminded everyone that there will be a working party on February 2018 to get ready for the State Indoor Shoot. The Bridge Replacements for the outdoor range are still being worked with Kevin Walter. The new refrigerator has been purchased. The bales for the Outdoor Range have been purchased, and we re working on the delivery date. Also the Outdoor Work Party is scheduled for the March for the Practice Range. Vice President Robin Vogel introduced herself and said she was excited to be a part of the Executive Board. She also re-iterated that we needed a new Publicity Director. Please volunteer to help your club out. President Larry Readal provided a quick intro said he was honored to be the Club President. He mentioned that the Club is doing great and that we re on track as a Club and to keep doing what we have been doing. He said he likes our events to be fun and that we execute any event we host in a professional way to ensure that members have an enjoyable time and will return for a future shoot or event. Larry reiterated that we needed more involvement from other club members and he has tasked the VP to possibly set up a Committee to try and elicit more participation. Larry would like to ensure we continue to build upon our strong relationships with the VBA and other clubs as well as the Outdoor Recreation. OLD BUSINESS: Regarding the VBA Meeting Agenda items we talked about last meeting: need to re-vote on one, and missed one at DEC meeting. * Item (5): VBA proposes to change dues for Bowhunter members to $20 (Dues are currently $30). Justification: to increase Bowhunter membership. Vote Results Approved by the BBH Club. Membership feels this may help Bowhunter membership, and that the loss of revenue is small enough that VBA can absorb it. * Item (6): VBA proposes to eliminate the $1 per shooter fee sent to VBA for each sanctioned tournament. Justification: Many Clubs do not like this fee, so they do not hold more shoots. Vote Results: - Not approved - based on the Club s feeling that this fee is not a burden (to us, at least), and that this is an important income stream for VBA. NEW BUSINESS: None PRESENTATION: Activities Director Jerry Michonski gave a great presentation on sausage making! The President then asked if there were any ITEMS FOR THE GOOD OF THE ORDER? Rick Atchison discussed with the Club that hunter participation is declining. He bases this on what he reads as well as VDGIF information regarding participation in the Hunter s Safety and IBEP Courses. We as hunters need to be aware of this and try to influence this decline by recruiting more hunters. We may lose our sport if there is not sufficient interest/participation to defend our sport against those who want it to go away. We as individual hunters should do what we can - take a kid hunting, get involved more, and recruit more hunters. Belvoir Bowhunters as Club should consider what actions it could take in this area. Hearing no more items for the Good of the Order, President Larry Readal adjourned the meeting at 7:20 PM. Page 12 of 13
