Belvoir Bowhunters Newsletter Issue 270 December 2016 Excellence in Archery & Bowhunting The Next Club Meeting will be Wednesday, January 11, 2017 Start time 6:00 pm President s Message -by Bakari Dale Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all!!! Please join us all in congratulating Brandon and Rebecca Sikes, proud new parents of Lyla Evelyn Sikes! After 23 hours of labor at the hospital, she made her big entrance at 6:28 PM on She weighs a whole 7lbs 8 oz and is inches long. Membership Committee: (recruiting, retention & reclamation) Hunting Committee: (Organize hunts, Hunter Orientation, Bowfishing ) Tournament Committee: (Judges, Range Officers, Time Keepers) Communications Committee: (Photographer, Bulletin Boards) Instructor Cadre: (Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, IBEP, Certification) Hunting in 2016 in review The hunting season had been very slow for me trying to put my hands on a Monster Buck here Northern Virginia. I have hunted three different states this year and ended up with just one Buck, but there is no place like home (Virginia). If you have not gotten out this year you don t know what you re missing. Hunting in VA has been a sleeper state for hunting big bucks but when you look at how healthy and plentiful the target opportunities are then it is well worth it just spending time at home hunting. If you are wondering where to hunt, I am sure most of us are within 20 minutes of some prime hunting grounds such as Fairfax County Deer Archery Management Program, Suburban Whitetail Deer Management, Fort Belvoir, Lake Ridge HOA deer management, Quantico Marine Base and several more. Get out and enjoy God s renewable resource. To all have a great, safe and successful season and Happy Holidays! Congrats to the BBH Executive Board for Thank you - Felix Lopez, Ron Buzalsky and Keith Matheny - for a job well done finding folks to volunteer. With the Sikes out adjusting to the new addition to their lives, the prior PD (Greg Thompson) is filling in. This newsletter will be combining the best of the November and December newsletters. President: Bakari Dale Vice President: Greg Thompson Secretary/Treasurer: Larry Readal Activities Director: Rich Vigue Publicity Director: Randy Saldivar Range Warden: Walt Blackwell SGT-At-Arms: Ron Anderson. Tournament Captain: Ira Joseph

Hunters for the Hungry Update Tracy Grevert Thank you to all BBH members who have donated deer this fall season to H4H. To date we have personally processed almost 50 deer; close to 1400 pounds since September 1. This meat has been given to ACTS in Dumfries on a weekly basis to help feed the local in need. I especially want to thank all of those who have allowed us to do your personal deer processing and packaging. For those of you who don t know H4H pays a

small amount to us to process their deer; that s why some processors charge an additional charge for H4H donations of deer. There are many choices and prices in the area for you to get your deer processed. I provide you the ability to drop off deer 24/7/365 and provide personal professional custom processing to your needs on most deer in 24hrs. Processing personal deer for all hunters helps me contribute to the cost and time that it takes to be and run a H4H deer donation location. Thank you for your support of H4H and our deer processing efforts. Tracy, Angie, Owen, Jace We always need more deer. Vice President -By Greg Thompson of the draw complete when his head appeared. At 12 yards, he had no issues identifying me as not right and beating his shadow out of there. Cover while I had good cover around me, I was exposed with more open area to the front than I should have been. I prefer to put some small amount of cover between me and the expected area that I will shoot into, but this set-up was hasty, not planned, and probably poorly chosen. I d like that one back! All good we saw elk, chased elk, and had a chance to shoot or shoot at elk. For 2017, the Belvoir Bowhunters will elevating our events with some new 3-D targets in the Spring, some new events this Fall, and the return of some old favorites in the Summer bowfishing! We will need volunteers, and every bit helps. Please look at your schedules, and come help make the club efforts a shared work-load. Good hunting! Secretary/Treasurer s Report Another elk season is past, and many good memories were made, many lessons to be learned, and a forward look towards the next season is beginning. I love the Idaho mountains, and the bugle of a bull bouncing off of the peaks around me. This was the first year I had a bull charge into a call, and I learned several things perhaps too late, but lessons none the less. We had hunted along a ridge-top into a small elk herd that moving ahead of us toward more open meadows on the same ridge. We managed not to spook them, but we could not push in either. After a half-mile or so, the herd reached the open meadows and stopped to feed and browse. We managed to get within a 100 yards or so, and set to cow call. I moved forward into what I though was a good ambush position and waited. A few bugles answered our cow talk, but I couldn t hear anything moving close-by. I hooked my release into my d-loop, and continued to scan. Within moments, I saw a flash of brown hair at 20 yards, started a smooth draw, and the bull stuck his head around a tree at 12 yards and froze staring right at me. From the flash of hair, to the head appearing, was less than 2 seconds...and he never made a sound! How an 900 pound animal with four hard hooves can tiptoe through the forest floor littered with dry branches and twigs is always a wonder. -by Larry Readal Treasurer's Report Dec 2016 (for previous month's activity) Account Balance as of 21 Oct 2016: $ 10, Income None $ - Total Income: $ - Expenses WGD Prizes $ (240.52) HftH Prizes $ (240.52) Total Expenses: $ (481.04) Account Balance as of 20 Nov 2016: $ 9, Lessons learned: Be ready-always. They can appear without a sound, and they are looking for the source of the sound. I was ready to draw, but only had about half

BBH MEETING MINUTES 9 NOV 2016 President Bakari Dale called the meeting to order at 6:09 PM. Tournament Captain Brandon Sikes had not yet arrived so President Dale passed on information that we are planning on having Indoor League Shoots in Nov and Dec and Billy Robbett and Ethan Patterson will be the main effort in putting this together. Also, some upcoming shoots for everyone s calendar: * Lancaster Classic: Jan * Club Indoor Shoot: Sunday, 22 Jan * Club Indoor Shoot: Sunday, 29 Jan * Club Indoor Shoot: Sunday, 12 Feb * VBA State Indoor: Feb Secretary/Treasurer Larry Readal announced that current membership is 207! We haven t had 200 members in a long time, maybe around ten years ago. THANKS TO ALL MEMBERS WHO BROUGHT IN NEW MEMBERS!!! Also, the Club has about $10,000 in the account. Regarding our license with the Army, I ve drafted the request and we re finalizing the document and how we will route it for review and approval. Also, we are having a Holiday Special on BBH camo hats: $15! (usually $20) so come get em. Publicity Director Rebecca Sikes was unable to attend. President Bakari Dale mentioned that she really appreciates everyone sending pics and articles for the newsletter! October was probably her last meeting for a while since she is due in December. (and CONGRATULATIONS again!) Activities Director Rich Vigue announced some upcoming events: * Our annual Bus Trip to the GREAT AMERICAN OUTDOOR SHOW will be MONDAY, 6 FEB. Price is same as last year, $55. Contact Rich or Larry to reserve your seat! Cash, check or credit card is fine. * For future planning, the WILD GAME DINNER is SATURDAY, 22 APR out at the Park West Lions Club in Manassas. Sgt-At-Arms Jerry Michonski was unable to make it tonight but President Bakari Dale passed on that we all want to say a big THANK YOU to Ron Anderson, who did the food for the last meeting! And, THANKS AGAIN for cooking for tonight s meeting! Clearly over and above the call of duty!! Range Warden Walt Spaulding announced that with the State Shoot on Feb, we will need to do some range work to get ready the working party will be SATURDAY, 18 FEB. There will likely be another one a little earlier or a little later too. Walt Spaulding and Walter Blackwell (Range Warden for 2017) will coordinate this with membership further later. Steve Richards commented on target bale status if we are planning on replacing bales before the State Shoot, we need bales. President Dale indicated Outdoor Rec has stated they will buy the bales. Tournament Chair Brandon Sikes had shown up by now and indicated he has a bridge for the 3D course constructed and we need a working party to install the bridge. After some discussion, the proposed date for bridge work is SUNDAY, 20 NOV. It doesn t need to be a large crew Brandon will follow up with an . President Bakari Dale covered multiple items: Growth: 207 members! This is GREAT! And thanks again to everyone who has recruited new members! Coaching & Archery Instructors: The Level I Certification Course will again be offered on SUNDAY, 4 DEC at 0800 at Outdoor Rec. Sign up with Bakari or Readal. Cutoff is 26 Nov to allow time to order course materials. Competition: Fall League shoots in Nov and Dec as discussed earlier look for a flyer and more info soon. Communication: Thanks to all who are sending pics and articles to the Publicity Director! Keep em coming! Old Business: * Executive Board/Tournament Chair elections: Vice President Greg Thompson had not arrived to the meeting yet from work travel, so President Dale moved into Executive Board/Tournament Chair elections for We will elect someone for each position, and he asked the group if they wanted to vote each position individually or as a group? The majority indicated that lets just do it as a group. Bakari read off the nominees for each position, as follows: PRESIDENT: VICE PRESIDENT: SECRETARY/TREASURER: ACTIVITIES DIRECTOR: PUBLICITY DIRECTOR: TOURNAMENT CAPTAIN: RANGE WARDEN: SGT-AT-ARMS: Bakari Dale Greg Thompson Larry Readal Rich Vigue Randy Saldivar Ira Joseph Walter Blackwell Ron Anderson

President Dale then asked if there any other volunteers or nominees we should consider. Did anyone have any other nominations to make? After a pause, there were no nominations or volunteers. A motion was proposed, and seconded, to accept all the nominations as stated. A vote was taken and PASSED by an overwhelming majority. * Amendment to the BBH Constitution & By-Laws on EB Terms of Office and Club Awards. Vice President Greg Thompson had not arrived to the meeting from travel yet, so we deferred this item until later in the meeting. New Business: Awards Nominating Committee: President Dale explained that for our annual awards that we present at the Wild Game Dinner, we need an Awards Nominating Committee to propose members for awards. The committee is a Chair + two persons and we need VOLUNTEERS. Members present were asked several times and there we no volunteers. Someone mentioned perhaps Kevin Brown would help out? Presentation: Nicolas Freer gave an outstanding talk and demonstration about archery in the early cultures of Mongolia, China, Manchuria, etc. He had several bows and demonstrated shooting techniques (including multiple arrows!) and discussed how archery was employed by these cultures. There were lots of questions and some discussion OUTSTANDING PRESENTATION followed by a round of applause and President Dale presented Nicolas a VBA 75th Anniversary Knife. For the Good of the Order: President Dale introduced Anthony Moore of ECM Taxidermy. Anthony had several mounts and talked to the Club a bit about his services, what he does, and pricing, and showed off some of his completed work. No individual will occupy the same elected office within the Club for a period longer than two consecutive terms of office or two consecutive calendar years, whichever is shorter. An example is when an EB member has to vacate a position late in the year (for whatever reason) and the Club elects a new person in that position, according to the Constitution, that person can only serve the remainder of that term and the next term, which means the Club then has to find a new member to serve in that position. It creates excessive turnover and extra work on the Club to find volunteers to keep the EB positions filled. There are multiple examples of this problem in the last couple of years. The amendment would fix this and allow volunteers to serve two full terms and/or two consecutive calendar years, as well as a partial term/year if elected out of cycle. Vice President Thompson reviewed the proposed wording for the amendment with membership, and there was some discussion. Someone asked for the wording to be read again, and that was done. Some adjustments to the wording were proposed and discussed a bit more, and the wording finalized. A motion was made and seconded, and voted on. The motion passed unanimously. The final wording of the amendment was: Elected executive board members will not occupy the same elected office within the Club for a period longer than two full consecutive terms of office of two consecutive calendar years. Partial terms served to fill vacant executive board positions prior to the two consecutive terms will not be counted against the total of two terms served. The meeting was adjourned at 7:50 PM. During the presentation, Vice President Greg Thompson arrived, so we went back and covered the Old Business of the amendment to the BBH Constitution/By-Laws on Terms of Office and Club Awards. The amendment had been reviewed with membership at the October meeting, with the plan being it would be presented to membership for vote at the Nov meeting. Vice President Thompson reviewed the slides with membership again, explaining that as currently written, an EB member cannot serve two full terms if they serve a partial term prior to being voted in, since the Constitution currently states

Range Warden -by Walt Spaulding In November, a work party took care of the larger bridge needed on the 3-D range. A big thank you to Walt Spaulding, Brandon Sikes, and Rich Vigue for working hard on a cold Saturday morning to improve this range. We will gladly accept and all donations for the Wild Game Dinner, and the HfH Charity Raffle! Sergeant at Arms Message -by Jerry Michonski Wow, I can t believe it has been over 2 years since I took over the Sergeant at Arms Position. I hope you enjoyed the food. Thank you the members that stepped up to cook a meal or help at one of our many events. It makes the job easier and allowed me to shoot in few of our events. Volunteer to cook one of your special wild game recipes or try a new recipe and use the club as your Guinea Pigs. Activities Director Report I would like to thank Ron Anderson for cooking at the November meeting and taking over the position for next year. For my final meal, I will be making Venison Osso Buco with pasta. -by Rich Great American Outdoors Show Bus trip, BBH Annual Wild Game Dinner, and Raffle Donations! Tis the season, and we are looking forward to the New Year and some great fun events to start it off right. In February, we will make our annual bus trip to Harrisburg PA for the Sports Show. We go on a Monday, avoid the crowds, get dropped off right at the front door, find lots of cool things for the next season, and best of all, we don t have to drive! Your ticket gets you on the bus, a buffet breakfast on the way up, front door service, room to carry your treasures home, and some great memories with your fellow club members. See me (Rich) or Larry for your tickets today. On April 22 at the Park West Lions Club in Manassas, we will have the BBH Annual Wild Game. The new location gives us more room for our members, more room for displays, and more tables for our legendary raffles. Come join the fun, food, and laughs with us. See me (Rich) or Larry for your tickets today. I hope you will come out to enjoy. Merry Christmas and Have a Happy New Year!!!
