1 Belvoir Bowhunters Newsletter Issue 256 September 2015 The Next Club Meeting Is On Wednesday, September 09, 2015 Start time 6:30 pm President s Message Fall is in the air -by Greg Singleton Welcome back to those just returning from summer vacation. Hope you enjoyed your Alaskan cruise or your fun in the sun in Cancun. In case you missed it, we had an absolutely fantastic Hunters for the Hungry charity fundraiser in August. 128 registered shooters. 128! I don t know if that s a club record for registered shooters at a Belvoir-hosted 3D shoot, but it must be close. And the club grossed over $9500 a record for sure! The weather was fantastic, and that always helps attendance. But this year, your Activities Director really put out the word and advertised heavily, and it paid off. You did a great job again Larry. Thanks for your hard work and can-do spirit. We love it! Thanks to all those who had a hand in the success of the event cooks, setup, registration, raffles table operations, novelty shoots, and to all those who came out to support the event. I had several folks tell me that they always come to this one event, rain or shine. This was the 17th time we ve hosted a H4H fund-raiser shoot, and it sounds like the club has really figured out how to do it right over the years. Thanks to all those who came before us and pioneered the way. Speaking of great weather, I woke up this morning to a beautiful, calm 59 degree morning. What an awesome end to the summer. After a rainy June and July, August has really gotten me thinking about fall and the deer season that s right on her heels. If you haven t started getting ready for the season yet, this cool morning weather is your final wakeup call. Here s a quick list of things to think about: qualifying, getting signed permission slips for private property, razor sharp broadheads, arrows, sight in with hunting arrows/broadheads, wax on string, bow tuned, make sure clothes are clean and as free of human scent as they can be, cover scent spray, flashlight batteries, rangefinder batteries, scent elimination soap for your clothes and your body, tree stand safety check (bolts, straps, cables), check tree stand for squeaks and apply lubricant as necessary, check safety harness for proper fit. If you have a favorite area, it s a bit late to scout now. I recommend stay out of your hunting spots until the opener on Saturday, September 5th. We want to hear about your success this season, so be sure and take a picture, document your account, and send it to our Publicity Director, Greg Thompson, for inclusion in the newsletter. We lover reading your stories! As we approach the fall, we re nearing election time for the club. Each July or August, a nomination committee is appointed to help the club pick next year s executive board. This year, your nomination committee consists of Morgan Fink, Ron Buzalsky, and Keith Matheny. If you d like to help out your club by volunteering to serve as an executive board member, please let one of these individuals know. Next year should be a pretty routine year. The ranges will not need VBA inspection. The indoor ranges will not need to be rebuilt to hold the new size Block targets. You won t have to negotiate a contract with the Army for the club s operation on Ft Belvoir. All those things won t be due for up to 3-5 years they were just done this year or last year. The currently serving executive board is more than willing to help out any and everyone who steps up to serve next year. Please give this careful consideration. We need some energetic and spirited folks to step up and volunteer. When you see all the smiles at the Wild Game Dinner and the happy faces at the indoor and 3D competitions, you ll know it s all worth it. Don t forget to watch out for ticks if you go in the woods during the early season. Lime disease is most certainly present on Ft Belvoir, so be sure and protect yourself from these pesky insects. We had a presentation on the best way to guard against tick bites a couple years ago,

2 but if you d like, we can try and put that together again. If it prevents one person from getting Lime disease, it would be worth it. Good luck on Saturday, Greg Vice President s Report by Bakari Dale The H4H 3D shoot was absolutely an amazing event; we had nearly 130 shooters registered. Larry Readal (Activities Director), Executive Board and Greg Singleton (Pres) your leadership and talents were critical in this successful event and my hat goes off to you guys. The marketing and volunteer efforts for the event was a phenomenal success; resulting in a record number of attendees, funds being donated and registered shooters. The Belvoir Bowhunters and NORVA put a ton of time and devotion into the H4H 3D shoot, and it really showed. Just in case you did not notice; the Women archers and Traditional shooters came out in full force to have fun and support H4H. When you get a moment take a look at their highly competitive scores. For the Novelty Shoots, let s congratulate Greg Singleton for winning the Long Distance Dough Boy Shoot, Lindy Fullerton won the Iron Buck Challenge and Logan Weller for winning the Water Jug speed shoot. I ll close this out by extending a debt of gratitude to all those who donated their time, equipment, food, and money to make our H4H shoot go off as a huge success. There is No off Season As the Field Archery season comes to a close the hunting season is approaching rapidly. Whatever your archery game is, for the most part your mind controls your reaction and outcome! Natural talent in some cases can be a key ingredient to success in archery. Before climbing into the tree stand you have another chance to improve your accuracy in bow hunting and 3D archery by shooting field archery. The VBA State Closed Field Archery Tournament will be held on Saturday, September 05, 2015, 08:00am to Sunday, September 06, 2015 at Singers Glen Bowbenders. For more information about directions to Singers Glen visit their website at While in Naval Flight School we were taught to know your own self-limits and seek self-improvement. I believe that concept works just as well in Archery. If you want another tactic to help improve your archery shooting ability then dissect your form/shot sequence and keep your equipment highly tuned. Then figure out what works well for you and repeat the process again. Whatever your capability is, and whatever the skill level you want to achieve; study it passionately and you will subconsciously master it. Program your body with perfect muscle memory. This is the perfect practice message we've all heard about throughout the years. This is hard work, but more importantly smart work! Good Luck this hunting season and for those of you participating in the State Field Archery Tournament. Secretary/Treasurer s Report -by Jim Zolinski Meeting Minutes for August meeting. The Club President opened the meeting at 6:32 PM. There were several new members/visitors: ALAN SOWDER, RANDY REYNOLDS, RANDY OLIVER, and JASON DEFORE. A round of applause was had. The Vice President mentioned what a great 3D shoot we had in July and thanked all for their efforts in setting up, running, and cooking for the event, as well as all those that shot, and strongly encouraged all to come out to support our H4H Benefit Shoot on August 22, and indicated that that event would be even bigger, better, and more fun than our July 3D shoot! The Secretary/Treasurer was unable to attend, so in his stead, the President announced that we had about $9K in our account right now and about 145 members. The President then discussed two items in relation to Club finances: 1) whether to donate Gross or Net proceeds to H4H, and 2) membership dues (both summarized below): - The Secretary/Treasurer has analyzed our finances, and has recommended to the Executive Board that the Club carry at least $8200 into next year. Many of our larger expenses happen early in the year such as the facility lease payment for the WGD, prizes for both WGD and H4H, and paying for the bus for Feb. - Based on this information, the Secretary/Treasurer recommends the Club donate the NET (not gross) 2

3 amount of proceeds to H4H and retain our costs of putting on the event. - Last year the Club hit a point where we had to stop expenditures because the account balance was below $ Club membership dues have been the same for a number of years, and an a small increase would help the Club continue to continue to be able to buy new 3D targets, donate to other charities, etc. A motion was made, seconded, and passed by majority vote to raise the Club membership dues to $20. Discussion continued on the H4H proceeds, with the general feeling being Net was the desired option, but several approaches of how to accomplish this were discussed, as well as how much our expenses were for this event. Eventually a motion was submitted to donate the NET proceeds from the event, with $2500 being set as the cost, even though our exact costs won t be known until all the costs have been resolved. A motion was made, seconded, and passed by majority vote to set the cost of the H4H event at $2500, to recoup this $2500 from the proceeds of the event, and to donate the remainder of the proceeds to Hunters for the Hungry. All were reminded that this motion does not limit the club s ability to donate more to H4H at the end of the year is the club decides to do so. An associated topic discussed at the same time was the approach the Club takes on donating to charities at the end of the year. In the past, Donation Jars for a charity or charities were put out during the late summer/fall meetings (as early as August), and that is how the funds are raised rather than the Club taking it out of general funds. A motion was made and passed to put the jugs out at the next meeting, noting that we missed the August meeting to do this. The Publicity Director announced he always needs input, especially pictures, for the newsletter and strongly encouraged membership to send their input! The Activities Director talked about the upcoming H4H event and gave a quick overview of the Sequence of Events, Novelty Shoots, and top Raffle Prizes, and asked that everyone come out to support the event, as well as tell everyone they knew that shoots a bow about the event! The Vice President additionally discussed a bit more on the Novelty Shoots and how they would work. The Sgt at Arms indicated he needed a volunteer to take care of the food at the September meeting and asked folks to see him at the meeting or contact him. The Range Warden thanked everyone that has been helping over the last few weeks to get the Range in the OUTSTANDING shape it s in and in support of our Range re-certification, and for setting up for our last 3D shoot and indicated that s why the Club was successful in our re-cert and at the shoots it is the hard-working volunteers that make it happen! The President and Vice President echoed their thanks as well. The President then brought up New Business of the location of the Wild Game Dinner. The two options on the table are the Franconia Moose and the Park West Lions Club (Manassas). The summary of pros & cons for each location is: Moose: costs about $1,100 and includes bartender (although the club pays additional fees for 2 drinks per person), tables & chairs (although the Club went to another Moose to get additional tables), and some food supplies (chafing dishes), seats 170, and is close to Ft Belvoir. Lions Club: costs about $850, but the Club would have to bring drinks and procure a liquor license from the State (cost unkown). Tables/chairs are on site, and it was estimated the venue seats 200. There was much discussion on the two locations. Eventually, a vote was called for, and the Club voted 16 to 9 to go with the Lions Club. The Executive Board will pursue the Lions Club as the location for the 2016 WGD. The President used a short block of time to discuss conservation and hunting news article found in other periodicals and news media. First, Hunters for the Hungry is offering donating hunters one ticket per donated deer to go toward a raffle of several prizes they will present at the end of the hunting season to incentivize hunter donations to the program. This is in response to a 20% decrease in the number of deer donated to the program in 2014 vs H4H realizes this was primarily due to losing Springfield Butcher as a participating butcher, so the incentives are aimed at bowhunters in northern Virginia to help them to decide to drive their deer to a participating butcher in another county. Meanwhile, H4H is actively looking for a two sites in Fairfax County that could hold a refrigerated trailer that allows hunters to drop off field dressed deer for the program. If you know of a potential site, please contact any of the staff at H4H. This will greatly help not only H4H but also those of us who harvest deer in NoVA. Second, there s an article in the July Field and Stream magazine by the 7-time world 3D champion who says that he doesn t use back tension to trigger his release. This defies conventional gospel from pros around the country, so check out this fascinating article if you have trouble with using back tension. The President also mentioned that Kevin Rose, District Wildlife Biologist at Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (who has previously spoken to the Club) was on TV commenting about a man in Fairfax County who set out traps to capture coyotes but wound up 3

4 catching a cat. Kevin Walter then gave an outstanding presentation providing an overview of the deer taken on Ft Belvoir over the last five years where and when the most deer and biggest bucks were taken, and additionally provided an outlook of the acorn crop on Ft Belvoir. There was much interest and questions during the presentation and discussion afterwards. A motion to adjourn was made and passed, the meeting concluded at 8:20 PM. Let me know, if you want to cook for one of the meetings. TDK is up for Septembers Meeting. THANK YOU! - Jerry Michonski Going hungry - Greg Thompson Having served in some austere locations around the globe, I can tell you from personal experience that there is nothing more gut wrenching than watching a child with hunger in their eyes, the desperation on the faces of their parents, and the emotional flood of relief when food is provided. The HfH shoot is a great event every year, as an archery community, we made this one a bit more special for the families that will benefit from your generosity. With a record number shooters attending, and monies raised, Gary and the HfH team will have extra capital to help those families in need make it through another week. You are now a part of that relief, and the tears that come with knowing they will go to bed feeling at least a bit better. Thank you, I am proud and humbled to be a part of this generous community of caring. Good Hunting, Greg 5
