1 Belvoir Bowhunters Newsletter Issue 267 September 2016 Excellence in Archery & Bowhunting The Next Club Meeting will be Wednesday, September 14, 2016 Start time 6:00 pm President s Message -by Bakari Dale Membership Committee: (recruiting, retention & reclamation) Hunting Committee: (Organize hunts, Hunter Orientation, Bowfishing ) Tournament Committee: (Judges, Range Officers, Time Keepers) Communications Committee: (Photographer, Bulletin Boards) Instructor Cadre: (Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, IBEP, Certification) Great Food! Great Fun! Great Cause! The Belvoir Bowhunters hosted the 18th annual Hunters for the Hungry 3D fundraising shoot Saturday at the Northern Virginia Archers Range located at Fountainhead Regional Park Hampton Rd, on Saturday, August 27th, We had nearly ~100 shooters registered for the event. The benefit shoot is designed to raise funds to assist needy families and individuals in the local area supporting the Virginia Hunters for the Hungry (H4TH) program. The Belvoir Bowhunters is a collective group of Bowhunters and tournament archers who promote archery and bow hunting on Fort Belvoir and in Washington metro areas. The group competes in a variety of competitive events throughout the year, sponsors hunting excursions, provides instruction to new archers and raises funds through charity archery events to support the efforts of the Fort Belvoir community to assist those most in need. This Hunters for the Hungry Benefit shoot is open to any archer who would like to participate and non-archers as well. All proceeds, less club expenses, go to H4TH. The Hunters for the Hungry organization has provided more than 6,106,606 pounds 24.4 million quarter pound servings to those in need. By all accounts our 190 member club made this event entertaining, fun and exceeded in raising these much needed resources as it has in prior years. Our support of this worthy cause the Hunters for the Hungry has resulted in holding a benefit shoot for 18 years and supporting the Hunters for the Hungry for more than 20 years resulting in $61,556 being raised for hunger relief now adding $5077 to that amount making our to contribution $66, This year, Rich Vigue (Belvoir Bowhunters Activities Director) established a goal of $6,000 and I had a goal of at least $4000. Thanks to the generous support of the many club members and supporters we made a net profit of $5077 meeting in the middle of both Rich s and my predictions. I would like to thank NORVA for their support and the use of their facility. They did a fantastic job setting up the twenty-five threedimensional targets. I would like to thank the 3 Musketeer Rich, Larry and Greg for planning and executing a superb event. Great Job Guys!!! I would also like to thank Brandon & the Stoners for running a superb competition and novelty shoots. Our top prizes included a Hoyt Bow, a Muzzleloader, Carbon Express Crossbow, and Guided $550 Ram or Bow hunt in WV. Please support our major contributors: Brandon White, Mountain Meadow Hunting Preserve Farron Moss, Hoffman's Archery Robbie Bowes, Bowes & Arrows Bakari Dale, Dale Eagle Archery LLC Dawson s Charlie Shupienus Larry Readal Rich Vigue

2 Greg Thompson, our top contributor with more than $600 in prizes. VBA Conservation Scholarship Just a reminder that the VBA has a $ Conservation Scholarship Available each year [providing funds are available]. Written request for the scholarship must be submitted to the VBA President by March 1st for approval by the directors. VBA members and their immediate family members are eligible. Scholarship can be used at any institute of higher learning for Forestry or Wildlife Conservation/Law Enforcement. VBA Bill Bennet Award The VBA published a new set of the guidelines for the Virginia scoring system. This set of guidelines will be used for the Big Game Hunting Awards. Make sure you are using the updated Bill Bennett applications on the VBA website and also in this newsletter. If you have any questions feel free to Shannon Nesserodt the VBA Hunting V.P. at bowbenders@hotmail.com, phone Vice President -By Greg Thompson Thank you for the welcome aboard as the Vice President of the BBH. With the transition from active duty and into a new wardrobe of civilian employment behind me, I look forward to focusing on the Belvoir Bowhunters programs for the coming year. The club is expending in membership, and in our archery venues, the call is out for additional volunteers to support our programs, and to help run events necessary for our existence. Please take a moment and review the BBH calendar, and see if you can be part of the next event. Speaking of events there is one event that stands out every year on the BBH schedule. Our annual benefit event for Hunters for the Hungry was conducted last month. While we were successful in the execution and funding raising for the HfH program, it was a lighter than expected turn-out, and many of the regulars were not able to attend. Having served in some austere locations around the globe, I can tell you from personal experience that there is nothing more gut wrenching than watching a child with hunger in their eyes, the desperation on the faces of their parents, and the emotional flood of relief when food is provided. As a member of the Executive Board, I d like to know why we were light on attendance from our own membership. Please take a moment, and send me a note about your thoughts, and please share (if you can) what reason kept you from attending. We are looking to improve the opportunity for all members to participate, but we can t fix what we don t know. There is no blame, just seeking an honest exchange of information to make our events better for all. With the number shooters attending, and monies raised, Gary and the HfH team will have the capital to help those families in need make it through another week. You are now a part of that relief, and share in the grateful tears that come with knowing the family will go to bed feeling at least a bit better. Thank you, I am proud and humbled to be a part of this generous community of caring. Hunting season is just around the corner, cameras are out, and the broadheads need to sharp. I sent out the latest Post Letter of Instruction for Archery, and Waterfowl, let me know if you need a resend. The approved hunting seasons are as below: Bowhunting - no early, or late, Urban Archery season: *Scouting September Deer Hunting: 1 October January 2017 Waterfowl Season Dates: 7-10 October, November, 17 December - 8 January 2017 No Spring Gobbler in 2017 These hunting season dates have been established in an effort to reduce labor costs associated with the hunting program due to a budget shortfall in FY17. Activities Director Report -by Rich Whew! Done with another H4H 3D shoot! A huge thanks to everyone who donated prizes and purchased raffle tickets! We were able to donate over $5,000 we couldn't have done it without your support! I hope you all have a very successful hunting season and we'll see you at the meetings!

3 Secretary/Treasurer s Report -by Larry Readal Meeting Minutes for AUGUST 2016 meeting The President was out of town for the meeting so the Secretary/Treasurer called the meeting to order at 6:15 PM after waiting for a few more members to show up. Due to the construction on-going in the ODR Classroom, the meeting was held in the small Indoor Range. The meeting was very small only about members were present, and no food was allowed to be served. We had several new members and guests: Jim McDermott (recent new member), Mitchell Johnson & spouse Rosa (recent new member), Keith Moon (visiting), Tom Evans (joined that night), and Peter Cao (visitor). Officers Reports Tournament Captain Brandon Sikes indicated that the 23 July shoot went well, with 42 shooters but it was really hot! Also, the next shoot coming up is the VBA FALL CLASSIC 3D out at NORVA on 20 & 21 August. Then, the following weekend (27 August) is the Club s Hunters for the Hungry Fundraiser 3D shoot. Brandon reminded everyone how fun this shoot is, and that the Activities Director will be talking more about the shoot in a bit. Vice President: VACANT Secretary/Treasurer Larry Readal indicated that the Club has about $8,400 in the account, and 188 members, and encouraged all to pass the word about the Club to their shooting and hunting friends. He explained that with more members, we have more influence with VBA, VDGIF, and similar organizations, so that we can impact hunting and archery in Virginia. He explained he had submitted the Private Organization renewal for the Club on 21 July, and that we got some feedback, and that he would be submitting additional information/corrections that week. Regarding the Calendar, we are rescheduling the New Hunter Orientation, with the target still being the month of August. Clint Horton and Rick Atchison are working out a date, and the Sec/Treas will let membership know when it is. One item the Club wants to add to the calendar is another Level I Certification Course. After some discussion, it was decided that SUNDAY, 4 DEC would be a good date. Sunday so it doesn t interfere with hunting (for the most part), and early enough in December that folks would still be available before Christmas traveling, etc began. Publicity Director Rebecca Sikes said THANKS for all the newsletter input especially pictures. Please keep the input coming! For the upcoming Hunters for the Hungry event, need Club input on who else we can advertise the event to?? Shops, other hunting or Archery Clubs, etc?? We want to maximize coverage for this. Please let her know. Thanks. Activities Director Rich Vigue reminded everyone that the Hunters for the Hungry Fundraiser event is coming up on SATURDAY, 27 AUGUST out at NORVA, and for all members to please pass the word to all their neighbors and hunting/archery friends. He passed out Committee Sheets for the event and asked that everyone consider helping out at the event. He also passed out flyers and asked members to pass the word the more people we have, the more we can donate to Hunters for the Hungry! Prize donations are welcome please get with him to coordinate. Top prizes for the event include: Crossbow, muzzleloader, Hoyt Compound, PSE Recurve, a Boar Hunt, Ladder Stand, Lock-On Stand w Sticks, and 80+ more archery / hunting prizes! He walked through the general timeline for the event. We then discussed the event with membership; mostly the food plan, since Rodney Roberts from NORVA was at the meeting. There was some confusion on the number of people that the caterer (Mike Rogers) was planning for he had been told 75, and had told us the cost would be around $300 but we relayed to Rodney that it was likely closer to 150. Rodney was texting with Mike, and let us know that the cost would likely be around $600 based on that. Jerry Michonski was unable to make the meeting, so Greg Thompson was filling in on food stuff, and indicated that in addition to the $600, the Club would still need to buy plates, flatware, cups, drinks, etc, and this would probably be around $300 or more. Sec/Treas Larry Readal indicated that these costs were way above the budgeted costs. There was some discussion about the money, and a motion was made and passed to allow $700 more of Club funds to support the event due to the food situation. Range Warden Walt Spaulding indicated we need to paint the old existing bow racks (not the new bow-case racks) to match the new bow-case racks. There was some discussion on this and someone suggested that the old bow racks should be re-built because they are pretty shaky and don t work as well as they could. It was decided that Walt, Phong, and Brandon would discuss and approach on this and get back with the Club. Sgt-at-Arms Jerry Michonski was on vacation at the time of the meeting. VBA Representative Kevin Brown was unable to attend the meeting. President Bakari Dale was unable to attend the meeting, so Sec/Treas announced these items on the President s behalf: There are two jobs rolling at the end of the year: Sgt At Arms Jerry Michonski, who has

4 served his term, and Activities Director Rich Vigue, who will be retiring and moving to Idaho in The President asks all members to consider volunteering to support their Club in its time of need. These are two KEY jobs for the Club! Please consider volunteering. Also the President really wants to MAXIMIZE Club participation at the Hunters for the Hungry event please come out and support your Club and bring neighbors and friends with you!!! Old Business: None New Business: The Sec/Treas announced that Greg Thompson has volunteered as Vice President, and we need to vote on this. Before there was anything else said, a motion had been made and seconded, and the Sec/Treas called for a vote, which was unanimously YES. There was a round of applause for the Club s new Vice President. We have several old 3D targets that need to be gotten rid of. Greg Thompson explained that our options are to auction the old targets at the HftH event or that another option is to donate them. Kevin Walter is involved with a group called GREENBOW that instructs youth in archery and hunting the group s goal is to introduce young people into hunting. Greenbow needs 3D targets to help with their youth archery instruction. Greg relayed that we have six targets that are excess (and worn out for Club use). A motion was made and seconded to donate six targets to Kevin Walter for transfer to Greenbow. The motion passed. Greg Thompson then provided an update on the facility changes on-going in the ODR building: The MWR chain of command has decided to move Leisure Travel down to Outdoor Rec. The current classroom area will become the reception area for the facility, and Leisure Travel will be incorporated into the current working spaces of ODR. What is currently the reception area will become a small classroom that will fit only 30 or so people. Greg indicated that the Club can meet in the Indoor Range area, but we would be required to move chairs out for the meeting and put them back at the end of the meeting. Food at our meetings may be a possibility later, but the Club would need to empty the trash and sweep down the range to ensure it was ready for use following the meeting. The new VP Greg Thompson then reminded the Sec/Treas that the Club needed to vote on how much money to retain from the Hunters for the Hungry proceeds to allow the Club to succeed in its goals for next year. The Sec/Treas outlined that predicted Club expenses right now are about $3,400 (not including the food changes) and he recommends holding out that much from the event to allow the Club to execute next year s budget, which includes buying more 3D targets as well as some indoor target bales on top of our normal expenses. A motion was made and seconded, and passed by a majority vote. Presentation: There was no presentation planned for the meeting in order to allow discussion of the Hunters for the Hungry event. For the Good of the Order: Rick Atchison announced that they would be starting the Wounded Warrior training cycle in preparation for the WW Games and that on 24 August he would need Archery Instructors from 0900 to 1500 and Air Rifle Instructors/help on Thursday, 25 August. Stan Parmentier indicated that the ODR Archery Quiver tag was for one year, but that many people use it only for the six months in the fall, and proposed that we ask ODR about a six month pass option in addition to the one year pass. Rick Atchison commented that there are two units returning from deployment that will only be here for nine months, and that this concept would benefit them, and additionally commented that perhaps ODR would consider a six, nine, and one year pass. Stan also proposed that we ask ODR if they would purchase the bow racks earlier discussed rather than the Club building some. The meeting adjourned at 7:10 PM. I hope the foods was enjoyed by all. Mike Rodgers catered the food for us and it was awesome. Duck Tacos, Pulled Pork, Rope Italian Sausage, Hamburgers, Hot Dogs and Sides to go with it. Our next few meetings will be left overs, Duck Tacos, Sausage and Pulled Pork. Unles, one of you wants to Make a meal for the a meeting, please let me know. We will need help sweeping up the range after the meeting when we serve food, so help us keep it clean. Tournament Committee The Hunters for the Hungry 3D shoot was a great success. A huge thanks to the NORVA team for setting up a fun and challenging 3D course. With that being said our 3D Tournament season is completed. Thank you all for a wonderful year. I would - By Rebecca Sikes Thank you to everyone for helping to share the flyers for the Hunters for the Hungry and also just sharing the event by word of mouth. Many people said they heard about the event because a friend or even a friend of a friend told them about the event. Don t forget to tell them about all the other things the club has to offer. We are looking to add some more places to advertise events for the club. If you know of a great place or new club in the area that would be willing to post club flyers, please me. This area is constantly changing and we would like to reach as many people as possible about the great things Belvoir Bowhunters offers. Thank you all for your help!
