Additionally, Thank you to Rick Atchison, whose brilliant idea it was to align the Board members with a supporting member to help where need. This strategy has helped the BBH move through, not just the meetings, but the various events over the past months with limited issue. I would be remiss if I did not recognize our VP Greg Singleton, who ran our February Club meeting in my absence. I truly appreciated his effort. But more importantly, one of the busiest months with two shoots, (BBH Pin Shoot and the VBA Indoor Sectional) Greg and his supporting Member Rich Danyliw operated the range and the shoot as if they had done it for years. Personally attended the VBA shoot and was thrilled with the great job and how the range operated during those two days. Greg S. had a busy month and I am personally grateful for his efforts. Speaking of the VBA Indoor Sectional, I would be remiss is I did not take the time to say a special thank you to many volunteers that came out to help. I will do that in much more detail on the VBA shoot later in the newsletter. As we all know, there was a significant push to try and make sure we got the bus trip to the Eastern Sports and Outdoor Show this past February. Not only were we able to accommodate it, the weather held out and we had a great crowd that went up. From the stories, it was a great day. Felix and Charlie were able to secure some great prizes, which we will all get to see at the Wild Game Dinner in April. Next year, we will put our foot forward a bit earlier and make sure we keep this tradition going Club Officers President Mr. Greg McDermott Vice President COL Greg Singleton USA (Ret.) I would like to reach out to as many members or nonmembers in the coming weeks to discuss ideas and formulate a Charter for this committee. I would like to have this put forth at April monthly meeting and start some of the activities and efforts as the Spring and Summer months come to us. Please feel free to reach out to me by phone or with your ideas. Please remember, we have the Wild Game Dinner coming up on April 2. What a great time where celebrate a great year, great trophies, great stories, and great food with a GREAT group of members. Lets work to make this the best year ever. We are looking for ideas to help. Ideas in the format; what you liked about past years we can build on or what you did not like that we should consider taking a different tack. No ideas are bad ideas. The only bad ideas are those that are NOT shared. Please reach out to Felix or myself with your ideas. As I mentioned in the February newsletter, I need to beat the volunteer drum yet again. This is a big night for all of us and we need all the help we can. We posted the committee chairman s names and contact information later in the newsletter. Please reach out to those Committee Chairs and offer up your help. Many hands make for light work. I hope you enjoy this month s edition of our newsletter, and as always, please send us you insight, concerns and suggestions. V/R Greg McDermott Activites Director's Message SFC Felix Lopez, Jr. (Ret.) Howdy, I wish to say thank you to all who were able to help out at the 2 day VBA Shoot. It was real success and from what I was able to see on Sunday, it ran very smoothly. Charlie had the sausages, dogs and burgers rolling and at times it was hard to keep up with all of the hungry competitors that were in attendance. Thanks to everybody that brought a dish or dessert to the shoot, it was greatly appreciated. The BBH s Wild Game Dinner is less than a month away and we really need members to volunteer to serve on the various committees. Please volunteer your time and efforts so we can make this one of the best Wild Game Dinners yet if not the best. Remember that for the most part, this is something new to us rookie board members and we can use the help. I have donation request letters that you can use to ask for donations from restaurants and all of the stores that you visit and do business with. Ask your local Wal-Mart, Target, Home Depot or Lowe s for a gift card. I am sure that they will be willing to help. So if you would like a copy of the letter you can ask me for one at the meeting or I can you one if you like. So don t be shy and ask. Some of the prizes that have been donated to the WGD so far are: 2 Darton Bows, Products from Ameristep, Buck Bomb, Yeti Coolers, Delta Targets, Montana Decoys and Firefly wind detector. I am still waiting to hear back from a few other vendors. We can still use prizes for the ladies and for the children. Or if you have items that you wish to donate please contact Charlie, Ira or I so that we can put them with the items we already have. I wish to thank those of you that have already donated items to the cause and to those of you that will. MAY May (Sat & Sun) VA Open Tournament - Sherwood Archers Once again thanks and have a good one. Felix 2

VP Greg Singleton managing the clock for the VBA 2-Day PIn Shoot. Great Job Greg!! Good Deeds VBA Indoor Sectional Tourney Greg McDermott Vice President's Message Written by Richard Danyliw February was a busy month for indoor shooting competition at the Belvoir Archery Center. We had our pin shoot on February 12 and the 2-day Virginia Bowhunters Association (VBA) State Indoor Championship on February 26 th and 27 th. Additionally, we had the Sunday afternoon league shoots (open to anyone) being run by Rick Atchison and Paul Vogel. As many of you know Belvoir Bowhunters hosted the VBA Indoor Sectionals on February It was an extraordinary event for this new Board and volunteers, earning the topic of this month Good Deeds. It was extraordinary to me, because is went off as well as it ever has, in as many years, with many new faces. I wanted to take the time to say a special thank you to many volunteers that came out to help. First and foremost, I need to recognize Robin Vogel and Kevin Brown. WOW. The work they put in to register the shooters, track the scores, consolidate the scores for the different ranges who were contributing to the event and finally the attention to detail in all facets, was magnificent. These two, coupled with the fact that Kevin won his flight, put forth an extraordinary effort, over the two days and countless hours. Paul Vogel, his attendance and help were greatly appreciated by the Belvoir Bowhunters. He was always there to lend a hand, handle an issue and provide us the guidance we needed. Ted Schnurr and his wonderful (better half) Tammy Elizondo, Charlie Shupienus, Felix Lopez and (if I missed anyone, please forgive me) did a magnificent job feeding us, keeping the food and drink available and just helping keep that member room in great order over the two day period. There is still plenty of opportunity to come out and shoot. The next pin shoot is SUNDAY March 13 th and the league shoots on Sundays at 1pm are a great opportunity to have fun and compete. We will be transitioning to outdoor 3D in April, with the first 3D being held on Saturday April 30. As I have mentioned, there are a few events that play a significant part over the year which impact not just our members, but whoever comes to these events. This two-day VBA Sectional Championship was one of them and I really wanted it to go off with out a hitch. It went fantastically thanks to the hard work of many. I hope those who read this note recognize my appreciation. Greg Singleton and I were very pleased with the turnouts for all these shoots. We had about 62 archers shoot in the Belvoir sectional of the VBA tournament. At all these shoots everyone had a lot of fun and we encourage all to attend and take advantage of these shooting opportunities in a competitive, but friendly environment. There was some real quality shooting going on in these tournaments. Take a look at the results on ours and the VBA websites. At the pin shoot and VBA tournament we had many Cubs represented with a couple, like Luke Hatchl and Cheyenne Baker, competing in their first tournaments and doing great. The seniors were well represented by Stan Parmentier (freestyle) shooting a 299 and Pat Hamp (BHFS) shooting a 298 in the pin shoot. Steve Richards won the BHFS at the pin shoot with a 294 and My Nguyen won the female competition with a 292. Cubs, Cheyenne and Jessie Baker along with Haleigh Altersitz all had great showings in the pin shoot. Haleigh also won the state championship at the VBA shoot. Belvoir members were well represented in the State Championship with several state champions: Jenifer Stoner, Paul Vogel, Russel Hatchl, and Zach Stoner. Many other finished with prizes. A number of the state champions competed at the Belvoir complex, and seemed grateful and complimentary towards what we here at Belvoir are doing. Congratulations to all. Greg and I would like to thank all the people who worked behind the scenes, especially for the 2-day VBA shoot. Kevin Brown and Robin Vogel handled the registration and scoring tallies. Jenifer Stoner was a big help with the lane assignments and scorecards. The food was excellent and would not have been possible without Charlie Shupienus, Ted Schnurr, and Felix Lopez. Thanks also to Kevin O Shea who documented the event in pictures. Paul Vogel, VBA president, was a great resource throughout the tournament. There is still plenty of opportunity to come out and shoot. The next pin shoot is SUNDAY March 13 th and the league shoots on Sundays at 1pm are a great opportunity to have fun and compete. We will be transitioning to outdoor 3D in April, with the first 3D being held on Saturday April 30. 3

Sgt-at-Arms Ted Schnurr 30lb Kingfish Tournament Winner Heads 'n Tales By Lennie Eubanks Jokes n' Tales Bear Trap! An old guy walks into a bar one night. Another man at the bar was telling about all of his hunting experiences and one guy asked him what is the most painful moment he has had hunting. The old guy said he was hunting deer in Canada and had to take a (number 2 ). So he found a tree and leaned against it and when he was fully crouched down a bear trap jumped up and grabbed his private parts. He said he jumped into the air and took off running with his pants still around his ankles. The man at the bar said, Wow, I can see why that is the most painful moment ever had. The old guy responded, No, that is was the second most painful moment. The most painful was when I ran out of chain The Distress Call Two guys were out hunting and they got lost. The first guy says to the second guy, "What do you think we should do?" The second guy says, "Let's fire three shots into the air. It's the international distress code." They fire three shots into the air, wait an hour, and nobody comes. The first guy says to the second guy, "What do you think we should do now?" The second guy says, "Let's fire three more shots into the air." They fire three more shots into the air, wait an hour, and nobody comes. The first guy says, "What do you think we should do now?" The second guy says, "Let's fire three more shots into the air." FOOD & FUEL: REMEMBER, the food and drinks at the club meetings is not FREE. It is bought and paid for by the club or the person providing it - - often the SGT at ARMS or another volunteer. Guess what? If it costs $40 and you stingy freeloaders eat free or donate only $12 total, somebody takes the loss and soon you will (should) be getting tap water. $5 will not hurt you; give it up, EACH ONE of you. I doubt that we want to have a signup list or sell tickets. Several years ago, in response to the usual request to provide assistance (food) for one of the state indoor contests, I bought and brought a couple of dozen nice, fresh, big rolls (Poppy seed, I think) for competitors to have with their coffee (for a price). They cost me about $1.50 each ($36) and when I went by during a break in the action, they were being sold for fifty cents each. I don t know what they eat now. WARNING: SEPTEMBER is closer than it looks on the calendar. And, By The Way, April 2 nd and the Wild Game Dinner are closer than that. It is almost here I suspect this will be the last newsletter you get before such fun function happens. Please sign up for some of the existing committees, especially the big easy one - - CLEAN UP (see me if you want your name spelled correctly). One other big one is helping to collect prizes for the big raffle - - think quality, not just quantity. Lots of opportunities to help with setting it all up. A long, but fun day. Come on down and help. I hope Charlie Mertens shows up for the March meeting or the WGD. He ambushed me a few days ago as he and his manager were coming out of a local bank and I was escaping from the Hair Cuttery. Through the open door, I was still promising Abbie that I would try to be more careful and from right behind me, he laughed that that would be a change, that I was not known for being careful. Abbie had asked why I was walking so much better since my back surgery but the top of my head was so scraped. Is there an organization such as Tree Climbers Anonymous? Hi, my name is Lennie, and I fall out of trees. Warning, the ground can hit you quicker than you think it can. SURVEY SAYS: Our new club admin says they are going to run some insightful [inciteful?] surveys for us to confess on. I wish them a lot of luck and hope they add this question for me. To you serious hunters who now plant food plots for wildlife, and/or have acquired various levels of farming equipment, ATV or full-size, do any of you know what a sand-fighter is and where I might get one donated? LANDED GENTRY: Lots of political discussions still going on downtown, including a few quiet ones on how to protect the federal subsidy funds flowing to those poor farmers who feed us (no, I mean the American ones). News from U. S. farm country is that the ones growing and selling corn and beans are having a hard time - - a lot of their bank accounts are full and spilling over onto the floor. Corn prices have gone from $1.75 per bushel 3 years ago (Yes, it was profitable at that level.) to over $7 now. Soybeans are slightly lower than that but, in the areas we hunt, the bean profits are running above $500 per acre per year. Lately, I have seen reports that farmland prices in western Kansas have gone up an average of 50% in the past 6 months and the official state reports for Nebraska farmland values says that AVERAGE values there went up 17.5% in the last 3 months of Sorry, guys, that includes the land we were hoping to buy for future hunting. If you missed the gold ring when it came around the last time, you may have missed it forever. For those of you holding such properties, congratulations - - can you spare a dollar for a new set of vanes? Whenever you!enjoy my outdoors, please leave it better than you found it.!!! Lennie The first guy says, "Well I sure hope someone comes soon, these are my last three arrows!". 4

Cooking Tales Cook's Corner By Greg McDermott This is a great, simple and delicious recipe. I have made it on many occasions and may someday make it for our Club meeting. Enjoy. Fried Venison Medallions with Feta Dipping Sauce Ingredients Feta Sauce: 8 ounces feta, crumbled 12 ounces sour cream 1 teaspoon granulated garlic 2 tablespoons freshly chopped dill leaves Salt and freshly ground black pepper Venison: 2 (12-ounce) venison tenderloins 2 cups all-purpose flour 1/4 cup dry mustard powder 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper 2 teaspoons grey salt 1 teaspoon black pepper 1 1/2 cups buttermilk 1 tablespoons whole-grain mustard 3/4 cup olive oil For the sauce Directions Directions In a small bowl fold together the feta, sour cream, garlic, and dill until combined. Serve on the side with the medallions. For the venison: Slice the venison tenderloin into 1/3-inch slices. In a shallow dish, mix together the flour, mustard powder, cayenne, salt and pepper. In a separate shallow dish, mix together the buttermilk and wholegrain mustard. Dredge the medallions in the buttermilk mixture for a minute. Then coat with the flour mixture. In a cast iron skillet over medium-high heat, heat the oil. Fry the venison until golden brown on both sides. Place on a paper towel lined plate to drain. Serve with feta sauce. To - Do's Wild Game Dinner (WGD) As all of you know our Annual Wild Game Dinner is a celebration of tradition, comrodery, the recognization of great Service to the Club, excellence in the field and just a great time to enjoy. It only comes with a lot of work. Now is the time we need to start planning and executing on the long list of logistical issues. I encourage anyone who wants to help to reach out to our Activites Director or myself to volunteer. Lets make this a great evening, yet again. Any interest or questions, please forward to: felixl57@hotmail.com or gmcdermott@mudynamics.com 5

Donovan Tate's 8 pointer was 138 inches and he weighed 135LBS and shot out of W-1 on November 3. Treasurer's Report Feb Meeting Minutes Kevin Brown Minutes for Wednesday, February 9th, 2011 The meeting was opened at 7:12 PM by Vice President Greg Singleton in the absence of President Greg McDermott, who was on travel. Greg led off by welcoming a guest from Ft. Belvoir, and then proceeded with the Vice-Presidents report. He indicated that the scores from the last shoot were posted in the range, and would be sent to the Webmaster for posting on the website. He reminded members of the upcoming club pin shoot on Saturday 12 February, starting at 0900 with registration opening at approximately Greg then reminded members about the upcoming State Indoor, and solicited volunteers for line judges and other duties. Greg indicated that he and Rick Atchison would be taking care of the clock. Ted Schnurr solicited food donations and volunteers to help with the food during the shoot. Next, Greg asked Range Warden Thein Dan Khin for an update on the ranges. TDK stated that the new target butts were in, and there would be a work party on the 15 th of February to replace the shot-out targets on the main range. Greg next thanked Sergeant at Arms for the feast of Chili Mac he had prepared for the meeting, and asked for his report. Ted introduced his mother, and passed the credit for the Chili Mac to her. Ted then commented that the members enjoyed the trip to the Eastern Outdoor Sports Show in Harrisburg, and thanked Secretary-Treasurer Kevin Brown for coordinating it. Ted asked for input on food for the monthly meeting, both suggestions and actual food contributions. Greg next mentioned that Publicity Director Carl Jackson was not present, and skipped to Secretary-Treasurer Kevin Brown for his report. Kevin gave a summary of current members (80), but indicated that there were a number of renewals and applications just received that had not yet been processed. Kevin gave an update on the checking balance (see the Treasurer s Report below for details), and reminded members to get their renewals in. Activities Director Felix Lopez gave his report next and again thanked Kevin for coordinating the trip. He indicated that a number of prizes for the Wild Game Dinner were procured at Harrisburg, and that he had several Darton bows, Ameristep tree stands, and Jack Paluh art prints already lined up as prizes. Greg thanked him for his report, and continued with WGD preparations by circulating sign-up sheets for various committees. Lennie Eubanks is heading up the clean-up committee, Donovan Tate the food committee, and trophy judging/display was being headed by Dan Van Gundy, with Steve Richards backing him up. Continuing with WGD business, a motion was made to approve WGD expenditures up to $5000; the motion was seconded and carried by voice vote. In a related but separate matter, Charlie Shupienus stated that often we purchase prizes for both the Wild Game Previous Balance 01/31/2011 $ 7, Income $ 3, Christmas Fund (from raffle) $ Harrisburg Bus trip income $ 1, Club Raffles $ Dues $ Shoot proceeds $ State Indoor Admissions $ WGD Receipts: Admission $ Expenses $ (3,657.61) Admin $ Club Equipment $ HFH Benefit Expense: Prizes $ Harrisburg Bus Trip Expenses $ 1, Shoot Expenses $ (1/23/11) Shoot Expenses: VBA Fees $ VBA Dues $ WGD Expenses $ New Balance 02/28/2011 $ 7, Raffle Prizes 6

Treasurer's Report February Meeting Minutes (continued) Meeting Minutes for Wednesday, February 9th, 2011 Dinner and Hunters for the Hungry shoot at the same time, and made a motion for the club to approve a spending authorization for prizes for the Hunters for the Hungry shoot of $1500. Rick Atchison provided a second, and the motion was approved by a voice vote. After Greg opened up the floor for new business, Charlie Shupienus asked for donations of venison to make sausage for the State Shoot and other club activities. Charlie then mentioned that Brian Peeler, son of charter member John Peeler, had been involved in a severe automobile accident near Fairbanks Alaska, and had sustained back injuries. Continuing with items for the Good of the Order, Stan encouraged participation in the MWR Sunday Indoor League shoots. Paul Vogel highlighted the upcoming VBA Banquet, to be held on 19 th of March at the Moose Lodge in Harrisonburg. Rick Atchison spoke briefly on several aspects of the Wounded Warrior project, and Bob Foster indicated several significant changes in the International Bowhunter Education Program (IBEP) classes being held statewide in Virginia. The state had brought the IBEP program under the umbrella of their existing Hunter Education program, and as such, instructors would be trained to provide both courses of instruction. Materials would be provided free of charge by the state, and there would no longer be any registration fees. The next class at Ft. Belvoir would be on the 26 th of March, and the schedule of classes has been posted on the BBH website. Greg finished up by identifying the speaker for the March meeting as Kevin Walter, who will be talking about Turkey hunting. Kevin is well-known to the club as the Ft. Belvoir Wildlife Biologist, and is also the local contact for the National Wild Turkey Federation. There being no further items for the Good of the Order, Greg next asked for a motion to adjourn, which was offered from numerous sources, with a similar number of seconds. The motion carried, the meeting was adjourned, and the raffle held, grossing $127 total, with $25 allocated to the Christmas Fund, $51 for the club treasury, and $51 for prizes.
