Belvoir Bowhunters Newsletter Issue 234 September 2013 The Next Club Meeting Is On Wednesday, 11 September 13 At the meeting, we will continue to update our members on the status of our negotiations with Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation (FMWR) about the new rules and guidelines our club must follow because we are a private organization on post. We received the most recent (and maybe final) draft of our lease from FMWR, and we plan to share the details and elicit membership comments. President s Message gave freely of their time, energy and funds in support of a charitable organization dedicated to a most humane cause providing food to a needy individual or family. So many individuals and organizations played a key part in making this event such an overwhelming success a $ check presented to Gary Arrington, H4H s representative, to help carry on their amazing work throughout the Commonwealth. REFLECTIONS WE***you and I and another or others -by Charlie Shupienus Proposal-counter proposal-negotiate-renegotiatecompromise-takes me back to my days on the job and negotiating union contracts (management s side of course) and coming to a favorable resolution on crucial issues. Although the atmosphere was more congenial this go around, the goal was the same an end result that was amenable and beneficial to both parties. The primary issues in the draft lease agreement were range usage fees for non-affiliated club members and facility usage fees to conduct competitive shooting events utilizing Outdoor Recreation archery facilities. Compromise prevailed and the fee structure addresses the concerns expressed by the membership; however, I feel the facility usage fee could use a little more massaging. Rather than engage in a broad overview of the content of the lease at this time, we will provide the membership with this information at our September membership meeting. Belvoir Bowhunters Northern Virginia Archers Hunters for the Hungry and old friends met on a knoll at Fountain Head Regional Park (actually NORVA) and With so many individuals making such a significant contribution to our success, where do you start with the accolades? I would say our host Victor Kernus and the magnificent staff of NORVA went beyond our expectation of support for this event. Paul Vogel, John Hoffman and Bob Mclean and the many members who participated in the shoot and raffle helped take us over the top. Our members, as usual, rallied to the call for support and came through like true champs Jenifer and Troy ran the jug shoot with fantastic results as well as Russ Hatchl with his first experience of running a novelty shoot Greg Singleton out hawking bucks for the spin board. And then Larry Readal did a masterful job putting together his first major raffle with the outstanding assistance of Felix, Ira and Phong. And then we had our Master Chef TDK and his burger flipping buddy Greg Thompson do an amazing job working the food line of course TDK s venison curry was the hit of the show. And then we had our ice man Rich Vigue come through with the cubes once again. Moving our equipment and supplies to NORVA went as smooth as silk, and the outstanding support we received pulling the targets, dropping the canopy, loading and moving our gear to Belvoir was fantastic. Our thanks to each of you for your contributions, regardless of the scope, that made this year s event an overwhelming success. And what about those raffle prizes again our membership came through with some fantastic Belvoir Bowhunters is a Private Organization not affiliated with Fort Belvoir or the US Army

donations Rich Vigue, Felix, Ira, Morgan, Dan and the list goes on great support. Minutes of August Meeting Of course we had several organizations donating great gifts X-Ring Archery, Hoffman Archery, Jack Paluh, Primos just to mention a few great support for a great cause once again. Our final number of $ was totally awesome.and since we started donating to Hunters for the Hungry back in 1996, we have amassed a total of $47, in donations which equates to 236,398 quarter pound servings of venison to the needy. Thanks to each of you for your continued support and contributions. In last month s article, I briefly mentioned that it was time to start the nomination process for the 2014 slate of officers. A Nomination Committee consisting of Bob Foster, Greg Thompson and Richard Danyliw has been established and will undertake the search to fill the five Executive Board positions being vacated (or any Board position) at the end of the year. Nominations for these offices may be made during the Club s October and November membership meetings, to be followed by an election during the November membership meeting. Now, more than any time in the Club s existence we need continuity at the Executive Board level to deal with the changing environment that this organization has and will be facing in the future. Commitment of time and energy are minor impositions that enhance not only the Club, but your involvement at a higher level of responsibility and leadership within the Club. With that said it is time for you to consider taking your involvement within the club structure to the next level and take a seat at the head table. Let your desires be known to one of the individuals named above or ask a Board member if you need more information of the function of a position of interest. It s time to take it to the next level. Keep those arrows flying down range. Charlie -by Dan Van Gundy The August membership meeting occurred on the 14th at the archery center, Ft Belvoir Virginia. President Charlie Shupienus called the meeting to order at 1910 hours and welcomed four guests to the meeting. Without further ado, Charlie asked for officer reports. Vice president Kevin Brown reminded everyone of the upcoming annual tournament benefitting Hunters for the Hungry to be help on 24 August. Charlie interjected that there would be more on the H4H shoot later. Kevin also noted that NORVA would host the VBA Fall 3D tournament on 17 August and he encouraged the membership to come out to support both the VBA and our neighboring club. In his additional capacity as BBH representative to the VBA, Kevin noted that an issue has arisen over the refusal of the Augusta Archers to pay VBA a per-shooter fee from the club s recent Reinhart 100 tournament. The VBA is in the process of deciding what action, if any, should be taken against Augusta for its adamant refusal to pay shoot fees the VBA believes are due. In a discussion which followed, several members familiar with the controversy noted that Augusta had benefited from the listing of the shoot on the VBA shoot card and certainly made more than enough money at the event to easily pay the VBA fee. However, Augusta appears unwilling to even consider paying the fee. Several possible measures or sanctions against Augusta were discussed, and Kevin said he would have more information after the September meeting of the VBA. Finally, the question of a possible change to VBA s constitution/by-laws was discussed. Kevin asked Paul Vogel to explain his proposal on VBA s recognition of a national organization s rules. Until now, despite VBA severance of relations with NFAA, that association s rules for 3D tournaments have remained VBA s. Since VBA clubs now follow IBO rules for 3D tournaments, Paul is suggesting that we formally change our adherence to IFAA rules to IBO rules for 3D. More on this will follow future VBA meetings. 2 Secretary/treasurer Dan Van Gundy reported that the club s checking account balance was $12, and that current membership had grown to 161 members.

Dan also said thanks to the response to the club s appeal, sufficient members had volunteered to join the IBO as BBH members, permitting the club to renew its affiliation with IBO and to qualify for the liability insurance IBO offers member clubs at very favorably rates. Publicity director Greg Singleton first thanked Pat McHugh and Richard Danyliw for their volunteer cooking for the members at the meeting. Next, Greg asked for membership feedback on the recent fishing article he had written and published in the club newsletter after tentatively proposing at last month s meeting the inclusion of fishing articles. Greg also thanked Jerry Michonski for submission of his article on turkey hunting. Finally, Greg again asked members to submit articles for publication. He said he was willing to help authors in any way to put together an article for the publication. Activities director Larry Readal reminded the members present of the last big event of the BBH schedule, the annual H4H benefit tournament on 24 August. He especially expressed thanks for the generous donation of prizes by club members. Larry also reminded members of the need for gallon milk jugs, which would be used at the H4H shoot in the popular jug shoot, a fund-raising novelty shoot introduced to the tournament several years ago and conducted by the Stoners. Sergeant-at-arms Thein Khin said he was finalizing his food plans for the H4H shoot. He asked if members intended to donate food items to be sold at the shoot to let him know in advance. TDK also announced that Richard Danyliw had agreed to provide the food at the September club meeting on 11 September. Finally, TDK asked members to be mindful of the need for a crew to help clean up after completion of the H4H shoot on the 24th. Range warden Russ Hatchl said the range work party to repair target shelter had taken place and he thanked volunteers Russ Hall, Steve Richards, and Richard Danyliw for their efforts replace the roof shingles. programs and fees at a number of other installations. He thanked Ira Joseph and Greg Thompson for the work that went into compiling the survey results. Charlie again reminded the members of the upcoming shoot to benefit Hunters for the Hungry. He expressed hope that the results this year would match or exceed the amount donated to H4H last year. He asked that everyone come with lots of cash and donate freely. Charlie also asked for volunteers to help run several of the novelty shoots to be held at the H4H shoot. He said Gary Arrington from H4H would be at the shoot and could provide tax donation forms to those who will need them. Installation biologist Kevin Walter asked to make some clarifying points about the upcoming deer hunting season on Ft Belvoir. He noted that although Fairfax County would hold a late antlerless deer season extending through April next year, Ft Belvoir would not. Instead, the late antlerless season on post will extend only through March as it has in recent years. New Business: Charlie informed the members that time was approaching when the club would select next year s executive board. He reminded us that of the seven officer positions, all but two would need to be filled by new faces. He said a nomination committee had been appointed and he encouraged anyone interested in serving on the board next year to notify Richard Danyliw, Bob Foster, or Greg Thompson. Charlie asked if anyone had anything else to add for the good of the order. Rick Atchison noted several upcoming clinics for wounded warriors and encouraged members to come out and assist. It was also noted that the Fairfax County archery cull hunts, begun in 2009, have had a great deal of success. In the past four years, hunters have harvested 75 deer in 2009, 452 in 2010, 714 in 2011, and 697 in Charlie entertained a motion to adjourn and the meeting ended at 2040 hours. Old business: Charlie detailed the most recent meeting between FMWR director Kim Mills and executive board members Kevin Brown, Dan Van Gundy, and Charlie. He reviewed the previous FMWR proposed license/lease agreement of BBH use of Ft Belvoir facilities and explained what changes BBH had submitted in response to the FMWR draft. He said both the club and FMWR were anxious to conclude the agreement before the end of September, but that nonacceptance by FMWR of several critical BBH positions could create a roadblock to an agreement. Charlie noted that during our meeting, we had presented Ms. Mills with an extensive survey summarizing archery 3

Range Warden Report Publicity Director Report -by Russ Hatchl Thanks to Kevin Brown, Rich Danyliw, Bob Foster, Keith Galleus, Russ Hall, Larry Readal and Steve Richards who joined me for the Friday, August 16, 3-hour work finishing the installation of the roofs on the outdoor range. Thanks to the volunteers for the August 24 Hunters for the Hungry shoot: Kevin Brown, Russ Hatchl, Ira Joseph, TDK, Felix Lopez, Phong Nguyen, Larry Readal, Charlie Shupienus, Greg Singleton, Jen and Troy Stoner, Greg Thompson, Dan Van Gundy, and Paul Vogel. Russ Sergeant-at-Arms Report Thank You! -by Thein Dan Khin I want to extend many thanks and appreciation to the members of Belvoir Bowhunters and NORVA who donated food, helped set up and clean the event, and contributed to make the shoot a success. Just for the food alone we raised a total of $601 for the Hunters for Hungry. It was a record breaking achievement that was very noteworthy. For our next September meeting, Richard Danyliw will be serving venison hot dogs and we hope to see many of you there soon. TDK 5 Preparing for the season -by Greg Singleton The temperature is falling. A few of the leaves are starting to turn. The days are getting shorter. Labor Day is behind us. It s time to get ready for deer season! As you read this, you won t have much reaction time before opening day, which is Saturday, September 7th. But bowhunters have a long season this year, much like the previous few years. The season will run on post until about the end of March 2014, and if you re hunting private property in Fairfax County, you ll have until about the end of April 2014 to punch your last tag of the season. So if you don t make it out on opening morning, no worries. Best to make sure your gear is ready than to go afield with arrows and broadheads that won t shoot straight or a tree stand that s unsafe. Take some time before you go out to look over all your gear, shoot your bow with the broadheads and the arrows you plan to hunt with, and make sure all you battery-powered equipment (flashlight, rangefinder) has charged batteries. Practicing. There are many of us who stop shooting field tips once we begin the final preparations for deer season. That s not a bad idea. I just shot my bow last weekend and found out the broadheads were not flying the same as my field tips. I made the proper sight adjustments, and now I m good out to 40 yards. While the season progresses, I ll continue to shoot a few arrows at my Block target to make sure nothing has moved the sights and that the rest is still line up where it was when I sighted in. This gives me the confidence I need when a deer approaches my tree stand. The importance of having confidence in your equipment and knowing your max range for shooting a deer with confidence cannot be understated. Bottom line: shoot your bow with the arrows and broadheads you plan to use in the deer woods, and do it before you go afield. Continue to shoot a few arrows each week throughout the season. Equipment. This is a long list, so I ll only capture a few of them here. Arrows with razor sharp broadheads. Don t go bowhunting for deer with dull broadheads. Dull blades tear the tissue rather than cut it, and torn tissue clots better and quicker. You want a perfectly smooth slice that does the job quickly and humanely. Check your broadheads for sharpness. They should easily cut a piece of paper without tearing it when you slide it over the blade. If they re not sharp enough, sharpen them or replace them. Replacement blades are easy to install on most broadheads, and they save a lot of time sharpening each

individual blade on each broadhead. But if you like the idea of sharpening them yourself, that s great too. Bow. Check to make sure all the screws, especially the ones holding your sights in place and the ones holding on your quiver, are tight. A loose screw on a bow in a tree is a bad thing. Also, make sure your bow has sufficient wax on the string and that all the shooting over the summer hasn t caused undue wear and fraying. Make sure you have your quiver, that it mounts securely to the bow, and that the arrows mount securely in the quiver. Check to make sure your release doesn t smell all sweaty from summer use. If it does, use some water and wash the scent off. Then don t forget to spray it with scent free solution before you hit the woods. Ttree stand. This is a major safety issue, and if you ve hunted more than a day, you ve heard it multiple times. The number one cause of accidents while bowhunting is falling while ascending your tree, while sitting or standing in your stand, or while descending from your perch. Make sure your stand has all the right screws, bolts, and wing nuts in the right places, and make sure they re tight. Make sure the cables aren t worn and are in good working order. Make sure you have your safety harness, and put it on a couple of days before you go out. Make sure it still fits in case it s new or in case you ve put on a few pounds since last season. Adjust it now, and hook up to a tree just a foot off the ground and test it to make sure it will hold you. Make sure you know the procedures for your harness to prevent your circulation from being cut off should you have to hang for an extended period of time. You should practice this procedure near the ground. Make sure you have the following items and that they are in working condition: clothes that have been washed in scent removing detergent and dried and ready to go, cover scent and/or human scent elimination spray, pull rope, gloves, face mask/head net or camouflage paint for your face. Know the rules for where you re hunting. Those of us at June s meeting heard Clint Horton tell us about the new rules for the state of VA: two does before you can shoot the second buck, then another doe (total of three) before you can harvest buck #3. Make sure you know all the rules of the land before you go out. If you re hunting on private property, make sure to offer some venison to the land owner, and offer to help him with any work that needs doing around the place. Make sure you follow his/her rules too. These are just a few of the things to think about this last week before the season starts. Good luck this year, and get the big one. Greg Belvoir Bowhunters 2013 Calendar September 11 Club Meeting VBA Scheduling Meeting, Harrisonburg October 2 Executive Committee Meeting 9 Club Meeting November 6 Executive Committee Meeting 13 Club Meeting December 4 Executive Committee Meeting 11 Club Meeting HEADS N TALES -by Lennie Eubanks LITTLE THINGS [MIGHT] MEAN A LOT: Hope you all had a great time at the H4H party; shot well and won some good prizes. Congrats to all who made it a profitable day for a good cause. Unable to attend, I did my small part for the hunting economy by buying a couple of those little necessities that we all know we need, even though some of us have done without them for 7 decades. Some of us seasoned rogues hunted for years, carrying all we needed in our pockets or a small possibles bag. As times changed and we accumulated more of the items we might need someday, we moved up to fanny packs and then to lines of expanding backpacks. At least, in the latter, we could drop the small things in the bottom of the big bag and have it there if needed. When I retired from gainful employment 10 years ago, one of the best gifts I got was a nice headlight with an elastic band. I kept it in the bag, always ready if needed for finding my way out of the dark woods. Needed it once and changed the batteries once. It still works fine. Recently, someone invented LED lights and, with 3 AAA batteries and adapted for headlamps, they can make the night a lot brighter than the old light did. Last week, for less than 10 dollars, I upgraded to a card of three (3) brighter, better headlights, batteries included. Surely, this will be enough to last me for my lifetime; at the rate I have been using them. Any of you need a headlamp? Anyone with a TV wonders why so many amorous couples need two individual bathtubs, aligned so that they can hold hands as they soak and recover, etc. I don t have dual tubs and probably never will. A better connection to us hunters is the guy on the beach without matches who digs into his tool chest for his steel firestarter so he can light the driftwood, as someone else is arranging the tent furniture. Just in time to maybe save my pre-season, Sportsman s Guide came through this month with a really good deal on a 3-pack of said fire starters and sent them to me. Anyone need an emergency fire starter, perhaps for your damp trips to see Alice? 6 Headlamps and spark sticks do have their places in our

emergency plans but what about your handy knives? Most hunters know to have plenty of them. One or two in their pocket or pack and maybe more in camp, right? World-famous bow hunter, and TV star, TOM MIRANDA booked and filmed a moose hunt in west-central Alaska last year. He had a guide and support crew, plus video camera man. They hunted for 12 days before seeing a bull and then took 2 days more to harvest it. That bull died in the river but by then the guide and camp crew had gone back to work elsewhere leaving Tom and the camera guy to complete the job. Butchering a half-ton bull in 3 feet of cold river water is NOT an easy task but would have been easier if either one of them had still had a knife. The guide took his home and Tom lost his. They took 2 days to cape and dismantle the bull using MUZZY broadheads! SO, you might want to pack a couple of packs of spare blades in your bow case, too, huh? BTW: Several years ago, one of our members had the bottom of a climber stand fall from under him, trapping him in the upper lacings high above ground. He strongly encouraged us to always have something on hand to be able to cut the bindings so that we could escape from such a hanging location. I believe he wore a small, sharp Buck knife on a necklace whenever he climbed after that fall. That is where I keep an extra Jeep key when I am traveling. If I can get into the Jeep, I can get to money and travel to town, an emergency clinic, or home. Here is wishing you all a very happy, safe, and successful hunting and general outdoor season in the coming months. Take a camera and harvest plenty of pictures. Give them to me; I d love to see them. I am still hoping to go take some, also, so wish me luck, too. Whenever you enjoy my outdoors, please leave it better than you found it. Lennie From Gary Arrington, Hunters for the Hungry: Charlie, we did have a good trip home, just very long and I slept well that night ha ha. I could never even begin to find the words to express to you all just how much it meant to be there with you and to be a part of this special event. I always believe that any event is only as special as the people who are a part of it. I am so blessed to know you guys and have you in my life! What a wonderful event both in dollars but in the fellowship and fun and great food had by all! God bless and keep you and yours always my friend; hope to see you soon!
