Belvoir Bowhunters Newsletter Issue 219 June 2012 The Next Club Meeting Is On Wednesday, 13 June 12 The next club meeting will be held in the MWR classroom at the Archery Center at 7:00 P.M. on Wednesday, June 13 th. Agenda items include the Upcoming Events listed in the calendar and a discussion of topics presented in this newsletter. Reflections -by Charlie Shupienus WE***you and I and another or others Where have all the shooters gone??? Talk about going from feast to famine; we certainly did at our May 3D shoot April 64 shooters.may 26 shooters. We were geared up and ready for the masses didn t work as we expected and all those burgers and sausage went back into the freezer for another day. However; those who did show up were treated to a great serving of BBQ prepared by TDK and Ira Joseph and talk about good you bet great job guys. June is going to be another busy month for the Club on the 9 th we ll host the Carp, Gar and Snakehead Tournament and expect another good turnout. From the interest being generated, I am looking for one of our best turnout in years. As usual we ll burn a few dogs and have a few goodies to go along with that chilled bottle of H2O which they ll need if our weather holds true to form. Then we move on to the 22 nd for our annual Coon Shoot as usual we ll start when the sun goes down. If you haven t participated in this shoot, come on out and give it a try. One of our fun shoots and there is nothing better that walking through the woods with just a flashlight in one hand and a bow in the other. If you can make the June meeting, we ll have Kevin explain the process. Also, get there a little early to get your practice shots in and help us set up the tents for the next day s (23 rd ) Pig Roast. Pat Hollywood McHugh once again will do us the honor of preparing his infamous succulent roast pig. If you haven t had the pleasure, you are in for some finger licking knock your socks off chow in addition to the roast pig we ll have the old reliable potato salad, coleslaw, baked beans and more. Unlike cooking a burger or sausage, cooking Pig takes just a tad longer with that Pat and his merry band of helpers will put the torch to the charcoal around 2 am to start the process so if you re up to it and want to scratch pig roasting off your list of things I always wanted to do let us know at the June meeting and we ll put you on Pat s helper list. If not you re still welcome to come out and shoot and enjoy the fruit of Pat s labor. After a few months of add, delete, rewrite, proof read, and all that journalistic mumbo jumbo that went into it, the Executive Board presented the final version of the Volunteer Time Bank Program to the membership at the May meeting for approval and acceptance. Following a brief discussion the program was accepted by a majority vote of those present. Each of you has been provided with a copy of the program, so I won t provide any further discussion on the subject, other than that the EB has been diligent in obtaining the names and hours of those of you who have preformed volunteer club related work for entry into the database. The numbers are climbing, so keep up the good work. Spring is on its way out, but there is still time to plant a new seed so let me do that. How would you like to participate in a tournament to determine the best archers in the Northern Virginia area? Namely, Fairfax and Prince William Counties I have had a few brief discussions with Victor Kernus, President, Northern Virginia Archers, on this subject and will bring it to the floor at the June meeting. Initially, we discussed a tournament between members of NORVA and BBH, but eventually considered including Prince William Archers and Cub Run, as well hence Northern Virginia Archers Championship Tournament. So give this some thought and we ll discuss it at our June meeting. Another one of our projects is about to come to fruition club apparel...it s been kicked around for awhile and at last the order has been placed. We have been

working with club member Brad Walker and with his contacts we have been able to obtain what we feel is a quality line of shirts and caps that will satisfy your needs. The shirts are Climalite by Adidas and the caps are Callaway by Pukka and priced to suit your wallet. For our ladies, we are offering a pink hat and tea rose shirt, plus a few other colors if you want something a little bolder. Also, we are working on making a jacket, camo caps and t-shirts available for those desiring these items. When we receive the order and finalize the pricing I ll send a message out to the membership letting you know when they will be available. For those of you who couldn t make the May meeting, Paul Vogel and I are working on having a sausage making party (in my garage) around the first week of August. Paul and I will be working out the details and will bring you up to date at the June meeting. You ll provide the meat (venison and pork or whatever you have in your freezer) and we ll provide the equipment. One of the requirements is that for every twenty-five pound of sausage made five pounds will be donated to the club for future events. I have casings and seasoning that I will donate, but we ll need to know how many of you are interested so we can accommodate the demand. As I mentioned Paul and I need to work out the details and hopefully can provide you with the details at the June meeting. So if you re interested be at the meeting or contact me expressing your interest. Remember this Club is only as good as you make it and keep those arrows flying down range. Minutes of May Meeting -by Russ Hatchl Executive Board members present were Charlie Shupienus, Russ Hatchl, Felix Lopes, and Kevin Brown. Ira Joseph stepped in for TDK, and provided the club members with sandwiches. Thanks Ira! Two new members joined the club at the meeting: Josh Webb and Kirk Keepers. We are now at 150 members, and so we get three votes at VBA meetings. Charlie presented the Vice President s report for Kevin Brown, who did not arrive until later in the meeting. The 3-D shoot held on April 28 is on the club s web site. We had 64 shooters, a great turnout, including 12 NORVA shooters. About the same number of club members returned the favor by participating in NORVA s shoot last Sunday. Helping out with other club s shoot helps make VBA a better organization, so do it if you can. The club s Carp, Gar and Snakehead tournament on June 9. The entry fee for each participant is $ We 2 will begin registration at 0700 with a shotgun start at 0730 and end at 2 p.m. Prizes will be awarded for the longest fish, the heaviest fish, and the heaviest stringer of 5 fish. The stringer of 5 fish may be any combination carp, gar, and snakehead. There will be one stringer per boat. Further details on the rules of the shoot appear elsewhere in this newsletter (see page 11). June 9 is not a free fishing day, so you will need to get a fishing license. The best way is to call and have your license ed to you. June 1 through 3 are free fishing days, when you will not need a license. Charlie reported that we have $11, in our bank account [plus the dues of the two new members. Charlie asked for members to send to Dave Burpee at burpeed@verizon.net photos and articles for the newsletter. Dave will provide editing, if needed, so don t be shy. Charlie asked for those who can get the newsletter by instead of snail mail, to let him know. That change can save the club a good deal of money. Russ thanked Charlie, Steve Richards, Stan Parmentier, TDK, and Richard Danyliw for their help on April 26, when the bales on the broadhead range were replaced and the bales on the 10 yard practice range were turned to present their [now] better sides. Russ also thanked those who helped set up and take down for the 3-D shoot on April 28. Charlie asked for more volunteers from club members who were not members of the Executive Board to help with the setup, which does require you to get up early enough to arrive by 7 a.m. Russ Hatchl, with help from Rich Vigue, gave the members a presentation on bow fishing. Charlie presented the new Volunteer Time Bank Program [details on page 9]. Those club members who are not members of the Executive Board can participate. At each event where they help, the club member must tell one of the Executive Board members what time they spent volunteering. Those who sign the MDW volunteer book need not do that, as Dave Burpee will collect that information periodically. For each hour of volunteer time, Dave will put a ticket with the volunteer s name into a bin, from which the winner will be drawn at the next Wild Game Dinner, to see who wins a prize. Cash awards or other prizes of substantial value shall be purchased by the Activity Director to be awarded for this drawing. At the determination of the Executive Board, more than one prize may be awarded at this event. In addition, the volunteer with the highest number of volunteer hours during the recording period [from the day of the prior Wild Game Dinner (or, this year, from May 9, 2012) to the day before the current Wild Game

Dinner] will be awarded "The Belvoir Bowhunters Volunteer of the Year Award". The club members present unanimously endorsed the program. Charlie described the shirts and caps that can be cheaply embroidered in color with the Club emblem [shown on the newsletter] and got a good response from the club. The club will purchase a number of short sleeve shirts and caps for sale to the membership. Charlie solicited the members to volunteer to be trained as range inspectors. Paul Vogel described what was required. Ira Joseph has already submitted his application. Charlie and Paul described their willingness to hold a sausage making party at Charlie s garage some time in the future. For every 25 pounds of sausage made, the club will take 5 pounds, for use in future club meetings or shoot. Charlie will provide the casings and seasoning to make the sausage. Paul described the Master Coaching Course that will be held at Ft. Belvoir some time in August. Rich Atchison ask for volunteers for his May 12 event from 3:30 to 5:30 to help with archery instruction for an active duty group that will be having a picnic at Thompkin s Basin. Felix asked members to bring empty gallon milk cartons for use in the Hunters for the Hungry shoot on August 18. The raffle produced the following lucky winners: Ira Joseph won a skinning knife Rich Vigue won a bleat call Stan Parmentier won a bottle of body wash Phong Nguyen won $6 Stan Parmentier won $10 Paul Vogel won $15. After the meeting a number of the remaining older 3-D targets were sold. Activities Director Report Howdy All, -by Felix Lopez Hopefully all the members had a safe Memorial weekend and enjoyed themselves with family and friends. I wish to say thank you to everyone that helped out at the May shoot. Ira manned the grill and did a great job getting things put together. Of course TDK made some great Venison BBQ that was finger lickin good. So if you didn t go you sure did miss out on some good vittles. And to all those that helped to set up and tear down everything it 3 was greatly appreciated by myself and all of the Executive Board (EB) members. May s 3D Shoot turnout was not quite as big as April s. There were only 26 shooters that attended the shoot. In April, we had 64 shooters slinging arrows down range. So help get the word out and tell your friends and fellow archers about all of the BBH events that we host. June is a busy month for us. We have the Carp, Gar and Snakehead Fish shoot on the 9 th, followed by the Coon Shoot on the 22 nd and the Pig Roast on the 23 rd. And of course we will need your help to help us get it done. So if you wish to volunteer to give a hand the EB and fellow BBH members would truly appreciate any help that you can offer. Last but not least I would like to remind everyone to save those gallon milk jugs. The Hunters for the Hungry Shoot is just around the corner and I know how much everyone enjoys the Jug Shoot. Also if you have any items that you wish to donate to the raffle we sure would appreciate it. Once again thank you for all of your support and help and I sure hope to see y all at a meeting and our events. Thanks, Felix Publicity Director Report -by Dave Burpee Do you have some treasures for sale? If so, send me the information and I ll publish in the newsletter. No homes or cars, please. If it is related to sports indoor or outdoor it is fair game. Speaking of fair game. Our membership has some great game recipes and it is time to pull them together into a BBH Cookbook. Send me your recipes. I ll incorporate some of them into the newsletter and all of them into the cookbook. Please do this ASAP so I ll know there is interest. burpeed@verizon.net In the meantime, here are a couple of recipes. One is useful and the other is, well, interesting. Dirt Cake (from Ann Shupienus) ½ stick butter or margarine softened 1 pkg. (8 oz) cream cheese softened ½ cup powder sugar 3 ½ cup milk 2 pkg. (3 ½ oz each) instant vanilla pudding

1 12 oz. whipped topping 1 16 oz. pkg. oreo cookies crushed 1 plastic flower pot (8 inch diameter) Silk flowers to decorate Gummy worms and garden trowel to serve cake (optional) In a bowl mix the cream butter, cream cheese and powder sugar. In another bowl, mix milk, pudding and whipped topping. Combine mixtures. Put 1/3 of cookies in bottom of the flower pot. Add half of the filling mixture. Top with 1/3 of the cookies. Add remaining filling. Top cake with remaining cookies. Sprinkle on your gummy worms and add your flowers on top. Refrigerate overnite. Serve with trowel. September 3 Executive Committee Meeting 1-2 VBA State Closed (Two Rivers) 12 Club Meeting (Hunting Ft. Belvoir) VBA Scheduling Meeting October 1 Executive Committee Meeting 10 Club Meeting (Re-zero Bows) November 5 Executive Committee Meeting 14 Club Meeting (Gadget Night) December 3 Executive Committee Meeting 12 Club Meeting (Bird Hunting with Bow) For sugar free use sugar free oreo cookies, light whipped topping, light cream cheese, sugar free instant vanilla pudding, and 2 to 2 ½ packets of splenda rather than the powder sugar. Elephant Stew (from Joel Lutkenhouse) 1 elephant 4 bushels onions 2 rabbits (optional) 93 1/2 gal. water 1/2 pail pepper 6 pails flour 2 pails salt Cut elephant into bite-sized pieces. This should take about four months. Cook over kerosene fire for about 4 weeks or until tender. Add onions; cook until tender. This will feed about 3,000 hungry hikers. If more are expected, add the 2 rabbits. But do this only if necessary, as most people don't like hare in their stew. Despite rough winds that resulted in low scores, everyone won a medal. Charlie Edwards [former member, 93 years old], Jack Cason and Russ Hatchl won gold and Stan Parmentier and Hank Megee [former member] won silver. Just after daybreak on opening morning, Bill Robinson sat his decoy out in a field near Bangor and snuggled alongside a thick stunted spruce to call in a wary tom. A few wirps and clucks, a few gobbles, and BAM, a lively and hungry (wily?) coyote had Bill by the arm, ready for a turkey breakfast. That spruce was right along the edge of a clearing and too thick to see through so neither hunter knew the other was there. The songdog had the sound pretty well scoped out and sailed over the top of the bush to clamp down on four layers of long sleeves, into the live human. To paraphrase an old saying, it did not take him long to look at a hot horseshoe, releasing the arm instantly and doing the Wiley Coyote bound away retreat. At the far end of its effective range, Bill s turkey load got the dog s attention but was not a fatal force. 6

After consulting with a friend, the local game warden, and having no carcass to analyze for disease, Bill trooped into the local hospital and got a few shots, to begin the rabies treatment regimen. As most know, the coyote was probably not rabid but the downside of actually having rabies leads us all to taking the cure, even though it is long and somewhat painful. Hey, let s all be careful out there, huh? As I was doing this article, had a first-hand report from a local A/C service friend who has seen 4 coyotes in our part of Fairfax County this spring. Two were in the Hampton road area west of Lorton, one on I-66, and one in Fairfax Station subdivision. Said someone showed him a pic of one standing in the middle of a F/S street with a house cat in its mouth. Mmmmmm. DODGE MY ARROW, WILL YA?? We all love the slow motion videos that show how much a deer drops between the twang and the fly-over, except when that tragedy befalls me. There may be a legal solution on the horizon. According to The Associated Press, Texas will soon let gun hunters use silencers when hunting more game animals. If the new rules apply to guns, surely the application to archery can t be far behind. The recent article from The Fort Worth Star-Telegram is quoted below. LONGVIEW, Texas The state will begin offering permits for game hunters to use silencers on their guns, effective Sept. 1. The Texas Parks and Wildlife Commission adopted rules in March that permit the use of silencers for the hunting of alligators, game animals or game birds. Such devices already were legal for the hunting of exotic animals, including feral hogs. However, hunters will still have to apply for state permits to have and use silencers. Longview gun dealer Bob Godell tells the Longview News-Journal the change is "long overdue." Longview hunter Earl Ates, a lifelong National Rifle Association member, says he doubts the benefits of silent hunting, though, and worries about its use for poaching and other illegal activities. He says silencers "can also go against making a humane kill." How s that for a fair & balanced report, even if a bit short on details?? Surely, such forward thinking can soon bring a whole line of new gadgets to sell to bow and crossgun shooters, etc. STILL LOOKING FOR A TRACTOR Buying smaller lottery tickets is working, somewhat. I am seeing more tractors for sale in my price range but get scared off pretty quickly when I search with bigger names like John Deere tractor. Suddenly, those friendly $500-3,000 numbers can erupt into $58,000 and up. A few of those send me packing or erasing the tapes. Of course, when I look for even little tractors, it dawns on me that 7 what I really need is a trailer to haul it on. Then, I would need a place to park it (them). May try to buy a tractor in Okla. Have a friend there who has a trailer, and a pickup, and he hunts with us in Nebraska. Said he would be happy to haul it north for me. He said his trailer is about like my first pickup - - every guy wants a pickup, rationalizing about all the stuff he needs to haul and then is all caught-up within 3 weeks after signing the new papers. But, pickups and trailers are nice enticements for friends to use that need such. Seems a bit similar to the nice parents who tie a pork chop around their kid s neck so that the dogs will play with them. Thanks, Mike, I m lookin. STAYING IN GOOD HEALTH: Word from one of my hunting friends that for past 2 months he has been going to the gym three mornings per week, at 5AM, before working outside all day. Feels great, has lost x-inches and 12 pounds. Will be cranking the poundage up on his bow and already eager to go to the ranch to scout and hang some stands. Am hoping he wants to plant some plots, too. THIS is what all of us older guys always promise ourselves we will do in the off seasons. He is a bit younger than me but is mature enough to have grown children and they are growing some grandkids for him. Hope I can catch up with him. Good job, Larry. SLOGANS: At the end of the Phil Phillips Unleashed TV shows, he signs off with a message like this Be safe, practice good conservation, always leave it better than you find it. Bill Winke, referring to his quests for Midwest Whitetails, closes with Remember, always dream BIG. Good guys; good shows; good ideas to follow. Those are my kind of hunters. So, - - Whenever you enjoy my outdoors, please leave it better than you found it.
