1 Belvoir Bowhunters Newsletter Issue 266 August 2016 Excellence in Archery & Bowhunting The Next Club Meeting will be Wednesday, August 10, 2016 Start time 6:00 pm President s Message -by Bakari Dale Membership Committee: (recruiting, retention & reclamation) Hunting Committee: (Organize hunts, Hunter Orientation, Bowfishing ) Tournament Committee: (Judges, Range Officers, Time Keepers) Communications Committee: (Photographer, Bulletin Boards) Instructor Cadre: (Basic, Intermediate, Advanced, IBEP, Certification) LAST 3D SHOOT THIS SUMMER AT FORT BELVOIR AND STILL BUSY Time flies by when you are having fun. This past month the Belvoir Bowhunters held its annual Picnic and 3D Shoot. The heat was a bit extreme (110 degrees in the shade) but thanks to the SGT at Arms we kept the shooters well hydrated. I would like to send a special thanks to everyone that helped to smoothly run this event. My hats off to Brandon Sikes, Jeff Buchanan, Jenifer Stoner, and Richard Rivera. First, Greg Thompson volunteered to be the club Vice President for next year. I am sure we don't need to twist his arm to jump in early. Greg Thompson s is a club stalwart that I believe will help out tremendously with the work load next year. Also, Greg will be developing the trophy design for the Instructor of the year award as he oversees the acquiring of the awards for the 2016 Wild Game Dinner. Currently, the Wild Game Dinner will still be held at the Lions Club in Manassas VA. Next, here is the 2017 calendar for the Belvoir Bowhunters. Many of you may not be aware but the VBA had to change the Indoor State Shoot. The shift in the Indoor State Shoot from March to February did cause us to lose one of the regular 3 scheduled club indoor pin shoots. To compensate we scheduled 2 indoor pin shoots in January, one in February and obviously the VBA state shoot in February. Other than that we added several new events for the club, Fort Belvoir and the Virginia Archery Community. Please take a look the calendar for year We have a packed schedule next year for your enjoyment. Lastly, next year the plan is to conduct an IBO qualifier with our schedule 3D shoots. With that being said we will need to have 30 lanes. Our range will need to be changed to accommodate 30 targets plus add 5 additional targets for the qualifiers. We acquired 12 targets for $3991 but we still need to purchase 4 Rinehart replacement targets and 5 targets for the qualifiers. This means that next year we need to buy at least 9 new Rinehart targets. These will likely be the larger Rinehart targets. Once that is sorted then it is maintenance of the targets with the inserts. As a side bar this year we purchased over $3000 worth of target bales at a discounted rate for Fort Belvoir ODR. Recently, we sent them a 5 year indoor bale replacement plan. There has to remain a collaborative effort between ODR, BBH and Dale Eagle Archery LLC to receive the bales at dealer cost.

5 Secretary/Treasurer s Report Archery & Hunting Information: Thanks Felix. Saw this and thought you might be able to use it for the instructor courses or to give to students. Safety_Brochure_WEB.PDF Thanks Dave. Interested in upland bird hunts. Here is the web site to a good spot: Activities Director Report -by Rich Can you believe it's already August? I know you all know about the H4H 3D shoot on the 27th! It's really important that you spread the word to all of your friends that are archers and not in the local area. Last year we had 125 shooters, it would be awesome to get that number to 150 or more. We have a great raffle for the attendees as well as novelty shoots! I am still collecting raffle prizes if you're able to get additional items! Please let me know by or phone if you have any additional that you'll bring to the shoot. See you out there! -by Larry Readal BBH Meeting Minutes 13 July 2016 President Bakari Dale called the meeting to order at 6:17PM and recognized CRAIG LAWRENCE as a guest (who joined that evening!), and also recognized new member MEGAN RIVERA and returning/visiting member JEFF BUCHANAN. Ira Joseph had volunteered to cook and the meal was Ira s pork special extravaganza complete with homemade hot sauce. It was fantastic! Tournament Captain Brandon Sikes was unable to attend, so President Bakari Dale passed on that it was GREAT to have 85 shooters at the June 3D shoot that may be a record for a regular 3D shoot!!! -It was just a great shoot; one of the most enjoyable we ve had in a while. Maybe we can duplicate that at the 23 July 3D shoot! At the July shoot, 17 and under shoot for free, and we will once again have the Iron Buck out for competition, with the prize being a pocket knife. We will again have K40 and K50 classes. Bakari encouraged membership to pass the word about the shoot to friends, other clubs, and other shooters, and asked for some volunteers to help with registration for the shoot. Bakari reminded the Club that in August, we have a couple big events coming up: the VBA Fall Classic 3D out at NORVA on Aug, and the Club s

6 Hunters for Hungry Fundraiser 3D shoot will be on Sat, 27 August. Secretary/Treasurer Larry Readal reported that the Club has 187 members, largely in part to Bakari s recruiting efforts, and about $9,000 in the account. Also a BIG THANKS to Kevin Brown, and Paul and Robin Vogel, who accomplished the audit on the Secretary/Treasurer and the Club s account a couple weeks ago. The Sec/Treas indicated he was very happy none of them work for the IRS, because they would take everyone s money! The Sec/Treas then asked membership why they thought we had so many shooters at the June shoot. Some of the responses: Facebook we are advertising more; the fact that it was the Pig Roast brings folks out because the food is so good; the Club had been on TV earlier that week; and the Known Distance Class. The weather was very nice and that was likely a factor also. Publicity Director Rebecca Sikes was unable to attend, so Greg Thompson covered her items and passed that THANKS for all the newsletter input please keep sending it; especially pictures. The Bulletin Boards have been redone, and the PD would like some feedback on them- are they OK? What do folks want to see on them, etc? Also, on our Web page or Facebook page, if anyone has feedback for her, please let her know. Activities Director Rich Vague let the Club know that there is a Hunters for the Hungry Banquet (formerly called the Aldie Banquet) on Saturday, 30 July out at the Park West Lions Club in Manassas (the same location as our Wild Game Dinner), so please come out and support that event. Also, he reminded membership about the Club s upcoming Hunters for the Hungry Fundraising 3D Shoot: Sat, August 27 at NORVA. The targets will be in same location as they were for the State 3D shoot, and we ll have three Novelty Shoots: Jug Shoot, Iron Buck, and Spin the Wheel and a HUGE raffle! This is a BIG Club event that a lot of work goes into and that we need a lot of help with, so PLEASE sign up to help on one of the Committee sheets that are going around: Food Donations, Cooking, Raffles, Registration, Novelty Shoots, Set-Up, etc. all need volunteers! PRIZE DONATIONS are welcome! Please link up with Rich to give your donation. Top prizes for the raffle include a Boar Hunt in WV, a Compound Bow, a Crossbow, a Muzzleloader, a PSE recurve, and our normal assortment of hunting and archery stuff. Flyers are on the table please take one, post it at your local sporting goods store, give to friends, etc. we want this to be a great event for Hunters for the Hungry. The Hunters for the Hungry event was discussed for a little while. TDK indicated his trailer is available to help load out stuff. Set up was discussed, and it was agreed that we would probably need to set up stuff both Thursday and Friday. We d like to set up the canopy Friday if the weather is good. Rich reminded everyone there will be some nice bucket raffles maybe six or so - the crossbow will likely be a bucket raffle. Also, we will run TWO Iron Bucks one for TRAD shooters, and one for Compounds. SGT-At-Arms Jerry Michonski was unable to attend, so Sec/Treasurer Larry relayed Jerry s THANK YOU for the folks that helped do food at the Pig Roast there were a whole bunch of folks that helped out pulling pork! But the main effort of cooking was PAT HOLLYWOOD MCHUGH, RICH SMOKE EM DANYLIW, and JOHN I AIN T AFRAID OF NO HOG HOFFMAN. For the upcoming 23 July shoot, Jerry needs someone to cover the grill while he goes to shoot. LCOL Gabe Anderson volunteered to handle this. Also we always need food donations! Side dishes such as coleslaw, beans, potato salad (or whatever you like) are great as well as meats to throw on the grill. Just let Jerry know what you re bringing. All donations help offset the Club s food cost for our shoots! For the Hunters for Hungry event, Jerry will some help with cooking as well as selling food- PLEASE SIGN UP on the Committee Sheets or /call Jerry to let him know. Since HftH is a fundraiser, we need donations of MEAT and SIDE DISHES or even HOT DOG and HAMBURGER buns. Please be generous and let Jerry know what you re bringing donations allow us to donate more to HftH! During the food discussion, Joe Wolfe (President of NORVA) mentioned that for some events, NORVA has used a professional caterer: Mike Rogers, owner of Waterford Professional Catering. He does two meats and a side dish, brings all the stuff, etc. and NORVA usually charges $7 a plate, and he thought the food cost to the caterer is $3, so NORVA takes in about $4 a plate. Mike does not charge for his time. Joe thought this might be something Belvoir should explore for the HftH event and indicated he would provide Rich Vigue and Jerry Michonski his contact info. Range Warden Walt Spaulding announced that the Indoor Range (currently being painted) will probably open next Thursday. Steve Richards then indicated that after his discussion with the ODR today, it might be the Thursday after that progress is slower than expected. The President at this time indicated that once the Range painting is complete, the Bulletin Boards will be moved inside the Range where they should be looked at more and be a more effective communication tool. Also, he has discussed with ODR, and they approve, of having Sponsors pay for wall space to advertise inside the Range such as bow manufacturers, archery shops, or archery suppliers, or maybe even outfitters. Stan Parmentier asked whether the Club would be allowed to hang animal heads up like we used to have. The President indicated that since the concept was pay to advertise, that no, the Club couldn t put up animals unless we paid the going advertisement rate (the rate is

7 unknown at this point). Stan indicated that this or a similar concept had been tried in the past and it didn t work. Range Warden Walt Spaulding continued with his information and related that he needs a working party to help paint the bow cases. Saturday 16 July was suggested; that conflicted with the previously scheduled NORVA shoot. Sunday 17 July was discussed; that date would not work either. Walt indicated he would send an to solicit volunteers with date/time info. Also, Walt relayed that we would set up for the 23 July 3D shoot on Friday, 22 July at 5:30 PM. Bakari reminded membership to not forget to sign the Log Book when volunteering those hours are part of the Volunteer of the Year and Instructor of the Year annual awards! President Bakari Dale covered multiple items: 3D target purchase: 12 targets were ordered; we probably saved about $1,100 through use of his dealer discount. They won t be here by the July shoot though. Paul Vogel spoke up and indicated that IBO sells 3D targets at a huge discount after their big August shoot and that we should contact them to check into it. Conservation: The Hunting Committee (Rick Atchison, Gene Miska, Clint Horton) have set up New Hunter Orientation on Belvoir on 30 and 31 July. We really need Club membership to PASS THE WORD to help this succeed. One day will be touring hunting areas; one day will be a review of State & Belvoir rules and qualification. Also Kevin Rose needs three more mentors for the Novice Deer Hunter Workshop. Please let Maston Grey know if you can support this effort. Coaching & Archery Instructors: The Level I Certification Clinic on 18 June was a huge success! We certified 12 folks. We will hold another one in December, we just need to lock in the date. Competition: Bakari did a quick review of the 2017 VBA Shoot Dates Communication: The Club 2017 Calendar is complete. All the VBA stuff is on there. Key adds / changes to the calendar this year: Added some Vegas style shoots; made the March Indoor Shoot a Field Archery Shoot; added a Hunter/Animal Shoot; and added a Military Child Appreciation Shoot (format TBD). Wild Game Dinner will be a little later in April to de-conflict with the VBA Banquet. One thing we still need to lock in for this year (2016) is the December Level I Certification Course dates. Old Business: The President went into Old Business: VBA State Shoot Bids - we need to let VBA know our vote for the Clubs to host various shoots. The Club discussed the various shoots and the pros & cons of the Clubs bidding on the shoots. A motion was proposed and passed for the Belvoir to support the following course of action: Indoor Sectionals Feb 25/26: Belvoir, Bowhunters of Rockingham, Kingsboro, Sherwood Spring 3D Apr 15/16: Kingsboro Field Open May 27/28: NORVA Fall 3D Aug 19/20: NORVA Field Closed Sep 2/3: Walton Park New Business: There was no New Business. Presentation: SGT Earit Powell gave an OUTSTANDING presentation on the Fairfax County Archery Program how it works, results to date, etc. Membership thoroughly enjoyed the presentation! The meeting was adjourned at 7:55 PM.
