Belvoir Newsletter Issue 244 August 2014 The Next Club Meeting Is On Wednesday, 13 August 14 Start time 6:30 pm President s Message -by Greg Singleton Never Give Up Many of you, like I, heard at one time or another that Winston Churchill once gave a graduation speech for which he walked up to the podium and said, Never give up, never give up, never give up! and then sat down. It is generally regarded as one of the best commencement speeches of all time. Turns out it s not exactly true. On Oct 29 (not graduation), 1941, he visited his alma mater, Harrow School in the UK, and began his remarks by saying, "Never give in. Never give in. Never, never, never, never in nothing, great or small, large or petty never give in, except to convictions of honor and good sense." These remarks were followed by several other paragraphs, but the words quoted above are undoubtedly the most remembered. I imagine many of you have stories about situations in which you didn t give up but persevered and accomplished your goal. I certainly do. I have tons of them. Take my truck for example. It s an old Chevy made in the 90s, so there are lots of reasons to give up on it and get a new one. Most recently, the check engine light came on, and the diagnostic reading from the computer indicated faulty catalytic converter. I had just replaced it with one from an aftermarket parts store, and they re not cheap. The mechanic who I asked to conduct my emissions test (which he couldn t do with the bad cat) said he could replace it for about $900. Well, I refused to pay that much, I knew I didn t want to get a new truck, so I took the truck to a well-known muffler place. They said they could get me an aftermarket one and have me going for about $600. Still ridiculous given I had just replaced it 3 years ago. Never give up. So I dug through my paperwork on the truck and found the receipt for the cat I bought 3 years ago. I took it to the place I bought it, and sure enough, they stood behind their part and got me a new one free of charge. I only had to pay labor for installation. Barring the parts store honoring the part they sold me, my next step would have been to head over to the junk lot. Where there s a will, there s a way. That s the way I do business, and most of the time, perseverance pays off. It can be a pain, but it s worth it in the end. A few months ago, I wrote an article in the newsletter entitled Priorities. I said you need to set your priorities, and then remember them when the going gets tough. Without question, your top priorities are pretty important to you. If there s a goal associated with one of your priorities, never give up on it. Whether it s a job you really want, a relationship, the elusive monster buck, a big fish on a fly, a ten pound bass, or a really good score at an archery competition, never give up on it. Never give up. In the Paul Newman movie Cool Hand Luke, the warden tells Luke, who continued to try to escape, Luke, you gonna git yo mind right. To have the nevergive-up attitude, you simply need to get your mind right with confidence. If you re confident you can do something, you ve increased the odds many times over that you ll do it. The 1960s cartoon character Underdog said, If at once you fail your deed, try again til you succeed. Perseverance. Never give up. Have confidence in yourself. So when you have trouble getting your arrows to group with broadheads, don t give up and go in the woods without the confidence that you can make the shot, keep at it till you get the group you know you and your equipment are capable of. When it s cold, or it s wet, but you know that buck s still out there, never give up. Get out there and get him. You can do it. Just get your mind right and do it. Speaking of doing it, boy did you guys do it last month at the 3D shoot and picnic. We had the most shooters at a competition so far this year: 55! Thanks to all who came out and supported the event. Many of you

helped setup on Friday afternoon, on Saturday morning, in the true spirit of the club picnic, several devoted club members brought wild game from the freezer to share with the club. It was a big success all the way around. Thanks goes out to those of you who helped, whether it was running the grill, bringing food (thanks for all those great desserts too!!), putting up and taking down the tents, and of course, setting out and taking in the targets. As far as the range goes, with our conversion to the IBO standards, it looks like many folks have settled on shooting from the blue stake (the farthest distance), even though most people only have the Hunter style equipment. Always a good thing to challenge yourself, and I see many have opted to do so. Of course, there s nothing wrong with shooting from the closest stake your equipment allows so you can maximize your score! The most important thing is to go out there and have fun. Doesn t matter what stake you shoot from just enjoy yourself whenever you shoot. Your Activities Director, Larry Readal, has really been busy over the last several months gearing up for our biggest shoot of the year the Hunters for the Hungry shoot on August 23 at NORVA. He s got a ton of really great prizes lined up for the raffle. Wait till you see them. He s advertised everywhere on the planet, and yesterday I heard he was talking with NASA about sending a message to the International Space Station. This is going to be an outstanding event with the challenging targets that NORVA puts out, the novelty shoots to include the jug shoot (don t forget to bring your empty milk jugs!), lots of good food, and of course the raffle. 100% of the gross revenue from the food, the registration, and the raffle tickets will go to the nonprofit Virginia Hunters for the Hungry to help feed those in our state who need assistance. It s a great program, and the folks who run it do a tremendous job. Make sure you come out and support your club s biggest shoot of the year, and be ready to have a ton of fun! Greg Vice President s Message worked on Friday night to set up targets and Saturday morning to set up the registration station, tarps, and cooking areas. Thanks go as well to those of you who cleaned out your freezers and donated meat to the BBQ. We once again followed the IBO rules and have not received any negative feedback in either of our two 3D shoots or meetings about doing so, and unless we get significant complaints or new ideas in how we can change to better meet the club s needs, we ll continue to stay in line with both the IBO and VBA. I don t know about you, but I (for one) am pretty anxious for archery season to finally open again in about a month. I transitioned to a new bow over the winter and have been shooting quite a bit in the basement. Suffice it to say that I am very happy with my purchase and am also very comfortable with the feel of the bow. I ll hunt a new area this year and have started scouting it. I look forward to learning how the behavioral patterns of the deer change over the duration of the season the mix of cover, food, and access to water (as well as pressure from people) all change with the seasons, and so does my knowledge of the deer herd. I think the thing that I have missed most since I last hunted is being in the woods in the dark and watching and listening as everything around me starts to awaken with a new day. I love that feeling of anticipation when you hear the soft crunch, crunch, crunch in the leaves of an approaching deer, everything is gray, but it is not yet light enough to shoot. Even if that deer passes and does not return, my day has just been made. I am a happy camper. I guess that s why I love this form of recreation. I get RE-CREATED just by spending a day in the field. To be honest, I do love to eat venison, and once in a while, I need to close the deal in order to reinforce my view of myself, if nothing else. The bottom line of why I hunt, however, is the pure joy of being in the woods. Much to the chagrin of our esteemed president, I don t feel the same way about fishing. At heart, I am a meat fisherman. To each his own, I guess. Good luck in our next shoot and in the upcoming season! Secretary/Treasurer s Report -by Jeff Buchanan We had another great 3D shoot (and Club BBQ) in July. Thanks as always to all the great volunteers who Novice Mistakes to Avoid -by Jim Zolinski 2

This past season was my first real season of hunting with a bow. I killed my first deer with a bow in 2012 and became immediately addicted. I spent the next year nursing that addiction and upon my PCS to Fort Belvoir, was immediately indoctrinated into the Belvoir Bowhunting club and got my hunting game on. But what a lousy game it turned out to be. I was making any of a number of mistakes that, for the novice hunter reading this, should be avoided at all costs. Scouting on Belvoir is problematic at best. There isn t sufficient scouting time to adequately learn all of the areas available to hunt. My recommendation is to pick one to three areas and become intimately familiar with them. Hunt them hard. The more time you spend in an area the more you will learn about your quarries habits. Learn how to accurately judge distance. This is probably the most common mistake made in the field and is cured with practice and some common sense. I got one shot at a deer last season and I misjudged the distance by 16 yards. Very embarrassing, so get out to the 3D range shoots and learn what your game looks like at various distances. Get a range finder or tape measure. Mark off distances in your favorite hunting spots; I use orange ribbon. This takes the guesswork out and helps to guarantee and ethical kill shot. Avoid movement. The deer I missed last year was staring at me from 50 yards away as it slowly moved toward me; curious as to what was sitting in his tree. I waited for his head to be behind a tree and unable to see me. As I drew back my bow, I had made a number of unnecessary movements due mostly to the fatigue of standing still for so long and my joints were cold. Drawing back took longer than it should have; he spotted me and trotted off, turning and stopping broadside. Too bad I misjudged the distance. In addition to the fatigue, my draw weight was too heavy for the conditions. You should be able to draw back your bow immediately in front of and parallel to your chest, not just perpendicular. This action keeps visible movement to a minimum. Take time this preseason to strengthen your back muscles (latissimus dorsa). Pull-ups and rowing are great exercises for that and will allow you to comfortably draw your bow while it s tight to your body. Noise discipline is key. If you re heading into the woods with a self-climbing stand, make sure you don t have metal on metal rubbing or clinking around. For heaven s sake put your phone on vibrate before you leave your vehicle. Travel as light as possible and keep your accessories to a minimum. If you think about it, you only need your safety harness, bow, and arrows to kill your deer. The rest is extra and you need to determine if it s all necessary. Everything you take you will presumably have to move to get to it and could create noise in retrieving it or risk dropping it. At the risk of further embarrassment I ll conclude now. I will probably have more to share another time though. If you have any tips for the novice or Fort Belvoir specific advise please take the few minutes it takes to put an article together for the newsletter. MEETING MINUTES July 9, 2014 BBH MEETING After two announcements by Rick Atchison and Brianna Kipper, the meeting was called to order at 1845 by the club President, Greg Singleton. Greg expressed his thanks to TDK for making the food for tonight s meeting. The pulled pork was fabulous. Greg called for new visitors or new members to introduce themselves. John Giatti, Andrew Esplana, Mike and Michael Cunningham, Oscar Chavez and Josh Quenomoen were our first time visitors and or new members. Officer s Reports Vice President, Jeff Buchanan, was not present at the meeting but Greg asked for feedback from the membership on the new IBO range set up. Feedback was generally positive. Over the last couple of meetings there was a call for a new tournament idea where the various clubs would assemble teams to compete in sort of an intermural tournament cycle. The idea resonated well at the VBA Tournament committee and they have taken action to create the rule set that makes the competition fair. There will be more to follow in the next few weeks. Greg also announced the 3D tournament approaching on 19 July. Set up will be accomplished on Friday the 18 th to bake the start of the event more timely and smooth. Registration for the tournament will begin at 0800 with the first flight of shooters going down range at 0900 or a little earlier if ready. We need to verify who is covering the food service preparations since the Sergeant at Arms was not present for the meeting. Lastly, NORVA is holding an archery tournament on July 20 th. Secretary Treasurer, Jim Zolinski, reported the current membership is 162 and the checking account balance is $11, In addition, the Private Organization revalidation package will be provided to the installation MWR office upon completion of the financial audit scheduled for Monday, July 14 th. Publicity Director, Rich Vigue, called on the members to contribute articles for the newsletter. The executive board has been generally the greatest contributors but members are welcome and encouraged to share their stories, events, competitions, hunts, fishing trips, etc. Don t be shy!! Activities Director, Larry Readal, announced that a follow up on the IBO rules were posted on the BBH website. BBH s hunter for the Hungry (H4H) fund raising event is scheduled for August 23 rd at NORVA. Be sure to mark your calendars for this great event. Proceeds are all in support of the H4H program which provides venison to homeless shelters and those in need. Also, if you have prizes that you would like to donate to that would be awesome! The two big prizes to be raffled off at the H4H dinner are a Talon recurve bow and a Hoyt compound bow. Larry also needs empty milk jugs. Paul 3

Vogel brought 44 jugs to the meeting. We still need more so if you have them, get them to Larry asap. Sergeant at Arms and the Range Warden were both unable to attend the meeting so there is no report from either of them. Kevin Brown is our club representative to the VBA. The only significant announcement was the draft shoot schedule in work and will be sent out in the next two weeks. Lastly, Greg announced that the club is looking to finalize next year s Wild Game Dinner date to be either 28 March or 04 April so that the event does not interfere with turkey hunting days. New Business Doreen Rizopoulos, one of our members and a breast cancer survivor, gave a very informative talk. As a survivor and an archer she experienced first-hand the rehabilitative effects of archery. She is leading an initiative to introduce cancer patients to the sport of archery to rebuild strength and confidence which accelerates the healing process both physically and mentally. The short term goal is to have interested parties join the Belvoir Bowhunters Club membership and allow them to take advantage of the many benefits of membership. The long term goal is the completion of an independent 501C charitable organization. Doreen is looking for a creative name for her initiative and asked for inputs to be ed to her at DOREENRIZOPOULOS@GMAIL.COM. Bob Foster gave a terrific presentation on the new archery products introduced this year. Check the website for the slide show presentation if either you missed it or want to see the details again. Greg spoke of a concurrent meeting taking place in Prince William County regarding distance constraints for archery tackle in their urban archery program. The concern is that PW County is placing increased constraints which will have a negative effect on their management program. There will be more to follow on that when we find out the results of that meeting. If you have concerns or questions, contact Kevin Rose, the state biologist for the Northern Virginia district. Lastly, if you re looking for the ranking for this year s new bows, check out the latest edition of Field and Stream magazine. For The Order Kevin Brown said one of our members experienced a very minor injury when a gold tip arrow malfunctioned and broke while in the drawn position. This is just a warning to watch out if you use them. Stan Parmentier said that charitable donation tax letters will be made available at the H4H to those who donate. Charlie Shupienus advised that with the club s annual picnic approaching it offers a great opportunity for members to clean out their freezers of any excess meats and make room for the upcoming season s new venison. If you have excess meat please consider donating that meat, fully thawed, to the picnic. Thanks. A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting at Treasurer's Report for July, 2014: Checking Account Balance as of June 30th, 2014 $ 11, Income Food Donations $ June 3D shoot & Pig Roast $ July 3D Shoot $ July BBH Meeting $ July 3D Shoot Proceeds $ Dues $ Total Income $ 1, Expenses VBA Shoot fee $ May $ June $ July $ Archery Center 3D Expenses $ Food and Pig Roast Expenses $ Grill $ Pig (Rich Danyliw) $ Russ Hatchl $ VBA Travel Expense $ VBA Dues $ VBA Donations (gift cards) $ Range Repair $ IBO Reaffiliation Fee $ Admin $ Total Expenses $ 1, Checking Account Balance as of August 5th, 2014 $ 12,

Whatever your choice, good luck and hopefully we ll swap stories about the adventures! HEADS N TALES -by Lennie Eubanks Sergeant at Arms Message -by Russ Hatchl Thanks to Dan Van Gundy for his doing most of the cooking for the July 19 shoot. Thanks also to those who brought items for the crew to enjoy. Range Warden s Message No report. Publicity Director s Message -Phong Nguyen SUMMER: I enjoy baseball but, as some say, it can sometimes be a bit slow to follow on TV. While watching the NATS last week and trolling the other channels, I found RAZOR DOBBS hunting the YO Ranch for whitetails but finding fallow deer and black buck antelope. He did some blind hunting (shot a fallow) and some stalking, actually stalking up to two fighting black bucks and arrowing one with his bow. That seemed a bit of a stretch to me but brought back some good, old memories. Barb and I have prowled that country and seen a lot of exotic game, often with the feeling of being in foreign lands. Regardless of the day, those Black Buck herd rams were always vigilant, looking right at us even as the rest of the herd slept, always at long range, usually several hundred yards. On one trip, we were hunting deer with another couple, in their comfy family Pontiac. He drove it down a rough track off of what they called Live Oak Road and we split up for some spot and stalk. We did not find a good whitetail that would hold still for my recurve but we did run into a belligerent Sika buck that took some waving and bluffing to convince him we were not of his species. At dark, when we were leaving, the Pontiac would not move. One of the rocks had punctured the transmission pan. Headquarters was only about 3 miles away but the road seemed longer in the dark. The capable and helpful staff towed us in where their mechanic could remove the pan, weld the hole, and refill the tranny, as they fed us good chuck in the dining room. While gathered around the open shop, 6

watching the repair work, the wind shifted and we all got a hard whiff of a rotten smell. One of the crew had returned that evening from a long weekend off: Oh, no, the rabbits!! What? Following him to the back yard, we found his work pickup with a bunch of dead jackrabbits in the bed, now several days old and turning really ripe. He and some of the other hands had hunted them at night before he left and he had forgotten to put them in the cooler. They were to be fed to a cat they had in a cage. A few nights before the rabbit hunt, they had been running their dogs for cats, etc, and had treed and captured a young male JAGUAR. Not just a bobcat or even a mountain lion, a Jaguar. Straight across, they are located only about 100 miles from Mexico, with mostly big ranches and rough country between and the young cat probably was just on a teenage survey trip, looking for a date or new place to settle. It was a cool experience for us and was the only wild Jag I have had the honor to see in person. Cool memories; thanks Razor. A couple more TV hunting shows that I like are SOLO HUNTER with Remi Warren and RIDGE REAPER, both on the Outdoor Channel and both about hunting for trophy class big game in the mountain west the tough way, with lots of back-country scouting, scoping and stalking. Perhaps my feelings relate to the time I have spent in those states but for me, it is good to know that there are still some tough ones out there, working the huge expanses far from the pavements. (Be alert: SOLO HUNTER is not the same program as SOLO HUNTERS.) QUACK; QUACK: (That is what my cell phone says on incoming calls.) I just got interrupted by a call from friend Jim, trying to talk sense over a very scratchy, hands-free signal. Was easy to believe he was headed home from work but taking a detour, trolling along a crunchy gravel road in his Maryland neighborhood. Had to stop and count 50 deer in one field, including 20+ bucks. That is always a good call to take, even if hard to understand sometimes. Maybe all of the good hunting is not in faroff places. BTW: Like many there, that Texas Sika buck noted above would have been a real trophy to all of those Sika addicts that hunt so hard in the marshes of the MD and VA eastern shore. Now, I am getting a call from our kitchen so gotta go earn my place at the table. Whenever you enjoy my outdoors, please leave it better than you found it. Lennie Hello BBH, I'm looking for a beginner compound bow for my 21 yr. old daughter to gauge her interest in archery. She is of slightly smaller build so 25lbs-40lbs pull might be appropriate. If you have an "experienced" compound laying around that I could buy or borrow I would sure appreciate it. Please or call me.
