1 archery DIABLO BOWMEN SEP 2013 Greg Tobler Memorial Family Fun Day 2013 President s Message Hello Diablo Members: I hope those of you who were able to attend and participate in the Greg Tobler Memorial Family Fun Day enjoyed yourselves. I had a wonderful time hanging out with other members and engaging in friendly competition. Congratulations to those of you who walked away with a trophy and thank you all for the great pot luck dishes. We will definitely host another family fun day soon. As some of you may know David Allain previously our LEG representative and 1 year board member has not renewed his membership and has resigned from the board Volunteer for the Boo Shoot The annual Boo Shoot is coming up in October. All positions are open. Volunteer your time in helping out the event. Contact Jon Moss at jon.moss@att.net for any questions. and LEG position because he has moved out of the area. He is closer to the Lodi Bowmen so we will see him there when we attend their shoots. Good luck to David. Pat Miller has been appointed to serve the remainder of 1 year membership position for this year. Welcome Pat. Wow the year is passing by fast as we are already at the end of summer and kids are back in school. Some of our repeat members have not renewed yet just a note that if you wait until January you will be paying the initiation fee again. We are gaining members every month during our membership meetings and they are coming from all sources of exposure. This tells me that archery is holding steady in its popularity. We have four months left in this year and there are a few scheduled events coming up. We have a Diablo Bowmen Archery Club Oakhill Ln, Clayton, CA Established in 1954, Diablo Bowmen is nestled on the east side of Mt. Diablo. This is a private range for members only. night shoot in October, on Saturday the 19 th (details coming) and the Boo Shoot on Sunday the 27 th. We also have some events coming up that have not been confirmed such as an Open House in December and a Level II certification class. Please check the Club s website calendar for the details on all events, work parties and meetings. Look out for the Bulletin in your box as it will contain current events and developments that come up between newsletter distributions. 2 Vietnam Vets Visit by Angel Yarnell On 8/24/13, Diablo Bowmen hosted a visit of 10 Vets from Pleasant Hill Veterans. They were instructed by Kent, Susan, Bruce and Dave. They said they had a wonderful time and 4 of them plan to attend our September meeting to become members. Big Kudos were given to our instructors by the participants. Thank you 4 for being there to show these Vets an archery experience. BOW FOR SALE Hoyt compound 2012 carbon element rkt cams 50-60lbs, 28.5 draw. Adjustable. Black on black. 3 Join the club shoots Club shoots are for all members and guests! So don t think you need to be a pro to participate. All archery shooting styles and skill levels are welcome to join. Report from the 2013 NFAA Outdoor Nationals, Darrington Washington July By Bill Potts I was lucky enough to be able to attend the outdoor national field shoot in July along with my wife. Also attending from our club were Pete and Kathy Budding, and George and Nicholas Merjano. The tournament is held every third year in Darrington, Washington, which is about 1.5 hours northeast of Seattle. Darrington is a town of 1500 with a logging based economy and some tourism. There is plenty to do in the Darrington area besides shoot your bow because of it's proximity to national forest lands and North Cascades National Park. There is also fishing in the many rivers in the area. This is an extremely beautiful area. The Darrington Archers have five 28 target rounds that they maintain with help from many volunteers. The rounds are all very scenic because they are in a dense forest. It is amazing that they are able to put on this level of a shoot in such a small community. Lodging (in private homes) and camping with showers and food were available. It is a very short walk to the range. The shooting started on Wednesday and continued through Sunday. Each non-professional archer (longbow to freestyle classes) had the chance to shoot 28 field and 28 hunter targets twice and then throw out your lowest score. Everybody had to shoot 28 animal targets on Sunday. Kathy Budding shot in the bow hunter class and took first place, George and I shot in the BHFS class and Nicholas shot BHFS. I personally enjoyed shooting with some really nice people I met from all over the country who were also really good shots and were more than willing to share tips. This is the first time I have gone to a shoot and was expected to know all of the rules for shooting, which was a good experience. I shot at the wrong target one time and lost five potential points:) It was really cool shooting at the practice range with people from all over the country and with some of the best pro and non pro shooters in the world. I believe that all of us from Diablo had a good time at this event, so did my wife who is a non shooter. I plan on going back in three years and hope some other members from our club can come. I also would like to thank club member Pat Miller who worked with me to improve my shooting and tune my equipment before attending this event, I was able to reach a couple of personal goals with Pat's help.

Work continues on painting the bow rack poles with a coat of green Rustoleum. We are working to get the chipper running so we can reduce the amount of brush and slash on the grounds of our range. Having the chipper running will allow us to get rid of our pruning's year round, not just when we can burn. We have identified areas along the trails that could use a few more steps and will be starting to build them soon. The white picket fence near the porta potti's will be getting repaired. Please be extra careful with the dry fire conditions, Thank You! Thank You! to all of our members who have worked so hard over the last year on the range, it is looking really good! Come out and enjoy it.
