It takes a lot of work to pull off an archery event. This past Sunday, we hosted the Regional/State 900 round. It was well attended, albeit quite hot for a Pacifica Photo credit: Wendell Oliver Souza Sunday. The help at the work party to prepare for the shoot though, was a little under attended. We all have a duty to this Club, as members, to participate in as many work parties as we can. I know things get in the way of the best laid plans, but if we honestly want our club to continue improving, then we have got to put in the work! Part of that work, is making sure our Club has a plan for the future. It s that time again when members in good standing can volunteer to run for positions on the Board. I ask you to consider running for a position. There is a great resource of previous board members that can tell you all the good, and the bad, that has come from being directly involved with the Club's success. It is my belief that if we are going to succeed, we must improve the participation from all branches of our membership. We are quickly approaching the winter season and with winter comes storms. Please remember to be safe out there while enjoying this wonderful sport! Respectfully, Randall Killpack President, SF Archers The Arrow September

2 Blue Range Baled! Contributed by SFA Board Member, Spencer Wednesday, August 30th, I had made plans to meet up with Brandi after work to get in a practice round before the upcoming 900 Club Shoot. I arrived at the club around 5:15pm and drove up to the Blue Range, surprised to find that a crew of men and trucks were already on site, knocking down and hauling away all of the old and worn out target bales. Realizing then and there that I wouldn't be shooting that night, I left my bow in the car and jumped in to lend a hand. After asking around, it was revealed that Jim Padilla had organized the impromptu work party, calling for assistance to get the range ready for the Regional/State 900 on Sunday, September 10th. Several dedicated club members heeded the call, joining Jim and son Joseph, to make short work of such an imposing task. As all of the old bales were dismantled and removed, teams of men in trucks loaded and transported 33 fresh bales from the barn and began staging them for installation at each target station. By the time Brandi arrived at 6 pm, things were in full swing as baling teams knocked out each of the 10 main targets one by one. Everyone knows that our monthly work parties are vital to the clubs upkeep and success, and they also promote comradery and club unity. Working next to these guys while they hoisted heavy bales, all the while laughing and carrying on like these guys are known to do, filled me with pride to be a member of San Francisco Archers, and reminded me of what this club is all about. On behalf of San Francisco Archers, please join me in thanking the following dedicated club members who volunteer their backs, personal time and energy, and their vehicles in order to make our club more enjoyable for everyone: Jim Padilla, Joseph Padilla, Club President Randall Killpack, Range Captain Jim Long, Tim Solari, Mike Lew, Tony Parra, Chris Miller, Jon Nazareno and Jonathan Johnson. Your expertise, experience and skill sets are an invaluable asset to this club and you are all greatly appreciated for your continued contributions. 4 Heat Wave Results in Hot Scores at SFA 900 Club Shoot Photos & Article Contributed by SFA Board Member, Spencer On Sunday, September 3rd, 20 SFA members and guest shooters participated in the last 900 Club Shoot of the 2017 season. Several of the archers took advantage of the opportunity to use the shoot as a tune up or practice round for the Regional/State 900, set to take place at SFA on Sunday, September 10th. As temperatures soared to record highs during the week, archers were relieved to find the days shooting conditions overcast and humid, but nowhere near the 100 degree temperature reached just the day prior. Dedicated club member, Big Jon Nazareno, received nods and applause after volunteering his own time by arriving early to prepare all the 122cm targets for the days shoot, and then prepped all of the targets for the Regional/ State 900. Many thanks, Jon! Also arriving early to help were club cubs Sarah and Stephanie Spencer, handling the morning registration duties with a smile, greeting and signing in shooters as they've done for most of the 2017 Club Shoot season. Thank you ladies. So proud! Warmups took place on the Blue Range, aka the 100 yard range, as archers were treated to fresh bales at all 10 shooting positions. Board Member, Spencer, delivered the shooters meeting, explaining the format and rules, and the shoot began with archers pairing up 2 per bale along the entire shooting line. The sights and sounds of 20 archers loosing arrows in unison is an exciting event to behold, for shooters and spectators alike! The Arrow September

5 After completing ends at 60 and then 50 yards, a short break was called before shooters resumed the final ends at 40 yards. When the dust settled and the scorecards were tallied and submitted, the official results were announced as ribbons were awarded for the top 3 finishers in each class. In the A F Rec class, Mrs. Olinda Killpack shot just under her personal best, taking 1st Place. Amber Adams shot 2nd, and Publications Officer, Brandi de Garmeaux shot 3rd. In Y F FS, Auralia McCollum shot 1st Place. In YA F FS, Jaya Reddy shot 1st Place. In SS F FS, Scorekeeper, Linda Lafond shot 1st Place with a new personal best. In A M Rec, Erik Schwartz shot 1st Place while Board Member, Spencer shot 2nd. In S M LB, Aaron Buchanan shot 1st Place. In MS M FSLR, Dan Hartin shot 1st Place. 6 Last Club Shoot of ANIMALS! Contributed by SFA Board Member, Spencer I know what you're saying kiddos, "How can SFA top that last fantastic Club Shoot? With this, I say! SFA proudly presents the last Club Shoot of the 2017 season, ANIMALS! That's right sports fans, on Sunday, October 15th, SFA will host this NFAA Style Animal Round one last time before Brandi de Garmeaux and I hand off the torch to the new 2018 SFA Board! This shoot will have 14 paper animal targets and 14 3D animal targets interspersed among the White Range for your shooting enjoyment. It will be shot from the marked yellow stakes. A 1st arrow kill gets you maximum points. If you miss, a 2nd arrow may be shot and that kill scores a reduced point value. If you miss again, a 3rd arrow may be shot and that kill scores the lowest point values. If you miss with the 3rd arrow, then that Animal got away and you score nothing! A $5 Registration fee will be collected from you one last time for this one so bring your nickels, kiddos! Registration starts at 8 am, then we will huddle for a shooters meeting and a shotgun start at 9 am. Turn in your scorecards before 2pm and stick around after because we will be awarding the top 3 shooters in each class. It has been my pleasure serving you as a 2017 SFA Board Member and bringing you more fun shoots than you can shake a stick at. And while I'm at it, let's not forget about the revitalized, revamped and absolutely fabulous San Francisco Archers newsletter, The Arrow, that Brandi and I spent countless hours on making sure it was chock full of content, news, entertainment and our own special brand of humor. I'll see you at the shoot, then at the Champions Awards Banquet in November, where I will be accepting my 2nd straight Club Championship in a row. Are you getting yours? SFA Hosts State/Regional 900 on the Blue Range Article & Photos Contributed by SFA Member, Jade Falcon The California State Target 900 (the 900 ) is a tournament held each year at various locations around California. The 900 is part of the State Championship series that includes the Indoor (at 20 yards), Target 900 and the Field competitions (including field, hunter and animal rounds). The 900 is hosted at various NFAA/CBH clubs all over California, including local clubs such as Black Mountain Before the Shoot The Arrow September

7 Bowman (BMB) and San Francisco Archers (SFA). SFA has hosted this tournament many years in a row. You can compete at any location and you can even compete at multiple events, provided that you compete only once for any bow class. For example, one of our own SFA members, Marsha Quan, competed in two separate 900 events -- one for Bowhunter class at BMB and another for Freestyle at SFA. (In short, you can t compete in two separate events for the same class to try and get a better score!) This year, we hosted two different shooting times on the Pat Heimsoth & Brandi Ford (NCFAA) Blue Range: 9am and 1pm, which makes for a very long day! Two weeks handling the 900 registration prior, our illustrious work crew put up brand new bales just in time for the 900. On the day of the shoot, we had archers arriving at the range by 7:30 am and setting up pop-up tents, chairs, and shade, which was needed later in the day. The day started off cool-ish, but warmed up pretty quickly. It was a beautiful day for shooting (in the high 70s- low 80s). Personally, I had brought a chair with its own shade, but wished I had brought a pop-up tent. If you ve never competed in a State 900, it s target archery of 30 arrows each at 60, 50 and 40 yards using the standard 122-cm FITA face (for adults). Youths shoot at , and cubs at You have 5 minutes to shoot each end of 6 arrows. It gives you plenty of time to shoot, and even for a slow FITA shooter like me, I still shot with a minute to spare. Linda Lafond was our timekeeper and whistleblower for the 9:00 am line We had a full line of adults, cubs, and youth shooters. 12 targets were in use bales (for the adults), the short distance bale (for the cubs), and a separate standing target (for the youth shooters). Depending on the number of people, there are usually 4 people per target, shooting in a A & B line. So, while it was crowded, each archer had plenty of room to shoot. And many were spotting for other archers. This year, we had archers pick out which The Arrow September

8 targets they wanted to shoot, instead of grouping archers by class. Personally, I think this worked out well as some of our Freestyle shooters didn t have to worry too much about breaking arrows. The shoot takes several hours to complete -- with two lines of shooters and a small 15 minute break between the last two distances. The longest part always seems to be the scoring as 24 arrows need to be accounted for at each end on every bale. In addition to being part of the CBH State tournament, our region, the Northern California Field Archery Association (NCFAA) also uses this tournament as part of the regional series of competitions. No additional shooting is required, you just need to copy scores from the state form (yellow) to the regional form (blue). NCFAA officers were on hand to pass out forms, answer questions, and shoot as well! Next year, we d love to see you out there shooting this event! Or come out and volunteer help run the tournament as timekeeper (like Linda) or register archers and pass out the appropriate forms. The Arrow September

ARCHERY DEER SEASON UPDATE Contributed by SFA VP of Hunting, Harry Brown SFA Life Member, Steve O Steen was successful in Zone D6 as well as life members, Harry Brown and James Brown, who filled their tags in Zone C4. Anyone wishing to report on their success or failure may do so by contacting the VP of Hunting, Harry Brown, at babeb45@yahoo.com. Articles in good taste will be submitted to the Editor for inclusion in The Arrow. Brandi s Corner ~ No Forgiveness In the July issue of the Arrow, I talked about my latest strategy for taming the target panic - lighter limbs on my wood bow. Currently, I m using 20 lb limbs (pulling 18 lbs) and I ve been getting the panic under control more and more - out into the longer yardages and out in the field. I ve had glimpses where I think it s totally gone and then I compete. Aaaarrggh!! Using the lighter limbs gives me more control over the bow, but the most interesting aspect is that there is absolutely no forgiveness for form issues at 18 lbs. If I don t hold the bow up after the shot, the arrow goes in the dirt. If I don t use any back tension, the arrow goes into the pallet. My strategy now is to alternate between practicing where I can control everything (on the practice range), with being out in the field, and competing. I m also really trying to let down if things are going right, which is surprisingly hard even at 18 lbs! I ve also picked out lighter limbs for my Hoyt, because that will be the ultimate test. And no matter how good your form is, it s hard to be accurate when you re aiming at a moving cloud in the sky! ; ) Please contribute to The Arrow! The Arrow will be sent out monthly on the ~15th, with the deadline for submissions on the 10th. Your contributions will make The Arrow even better! Please send scores, The Arrow September
