It's that time again to share what's happening with SF Archers. We had a board meeting last Tuesday where the Senior Games representatives asked us to host the games for We've agreed pending the finalizing of the two dates, spring and fall. It sounds like a great opportunity for those able to participate. We've also had discussion on the non-profit status of the SF Archers organization. It's clear that at this time anyone wishing to make donations to SF Archers cannot write the donation off as a charitable expense. We have made headway in getting the process started, although it has taken the better part of our term as board members. In the coming year, it will be up to the incoming board to take over where we've left off. It's our hope that we've laid the groundwork for many great things to come. Next month we will be holding our awards banquet. It will be great to reminisce with all of you as we celebrate the end of another year. Please consider joining us as we celebrate together at Dominic's new location at the Oyster Point Marina. Till next time, please be safe out there! 4 San Francisco Archers October 18, 2017 ANIMALS! Rounds Out the Club Shoot Season Contributed by SFA Board Member, Spencer On Sunday, October 15, SFA ended it s 2017 Club Shoot Season by hosting ANIMALS! on the White Range. Archers from as far north as Vallejo and fire-scorched Napa participated in the NFAA style round consisting of 14 paper animal targets, and 14 3D animal targets. Registration was sunny but breezy, as Club Cubs Sarah and Stephanie Spencer once again took on the task of greeting all of the shooters, collecting fees, and handing out scorecards. Thank you for volunteering your time this year ladies, your smiles and genuine personalities left a positive impression with all of our guests! After a brief shooters huddle, archers made their way out to the White Range for the shotgun start just after 9am. The course was laid out and groomed the day before by a small handful of dedicated club members at the Saturday Work Party. Special thanks to Range Captain Jim Long and his hard working bunch of club regulars, who did their part to make the 2017 Club Shoot Season such a great success. Your efforts are greatly appreciated, see you next season! Around noon, the first groups of archers finished up the 1 arrow, 28 target round, with the rest of the field finishing up shortly after. Scorecards were tallied, signed and turned in, and awards were presented to the top archers in their categories. The high round of the day was shot by Karen Williams, who posted a 559 out of 588, securing 1st Place in A F FS. In A F BB, Mrs. Olinda Killpack brought out her wood bow and arrows and shot her way to 1st Place. Cathy Robison shot 1st Place in S F Recur ve. Publications Officer, Brandi de Garmeaux shot 1st Place in A F Recurve. In A F BHFS, guest shooter Bethany Cravea drove all the way down from Napa to take 1st Place. In A F Longbow, Tanya Soluk shot but did not turn in a scorecard. The Arrow October
5 San Francisco Archers October 18, 2017 In Cub M Longbow, little Javin Salmon completed the course and captured 1st Place. In SS M Longbow, Jim Robison shot 1st Place. 8 San Francisco Archers October 18, 2017 HUNTER EDUCATION AT SFA CLUBHOUSE Sunday, October 29th 9am to 1 pm Contributed by SFA VP of Hunting, Harry Brown Members can log into the California Fish & Wildlife website ( and take an Online Course. Then you will be able to attend the four-hour class to complete the requirement for the Hunter Safety Class or the Bowhunter Safety Class. SFA Members are given priority a spot in the class. The General Hunter Safety Class is required in California to obtain a hunting license. The Bowhunter Safety Class is not required in California, but is required in some other states in order to hunt during archery season. Contact Jim Langell at for questions. Register for classes here: IMPORTANT INFO on CDFW Land Pass Program The NorCal region of the Department of Fish and Wildlife has asked that we pass on the attached letter pertaining to the expansion of their Land Pass program. The Program will include 43 wildlife areas and ecological reserves where visitors must possess a lands pass while on the property, unless they are carrying their valid California hunting or fishing license. For more info see the attached letter and visit PLEASE - NO DUMPING or DONATIONS at the Range In the last few weeks, there has been an increased amount of non-sfa trash next to the dumpsters and household items left in the Club House (including a TV/VCR Combo from the 90 s). It s a lovely thought that someone might be able to use items that you no longer have a need for; however, we don t have the person-power to dispose of items that are never taken. And in some cases (the TV/VCR!), we cannot dispose of the item in the dumpster because it is considered hazardous waste. The Arrow October
9 San Francisco Archers October 18, 2017 Brandi s Corner ~ Control, Competition & Consequences As you know, these last few months I ve been using my wood bow exclusively (pulling 18 lbs) to tame my target panic. I have it mostly under control, even at long distances, until I compete. In late September, Spence and I went up to Petaluma for the annual Rancho Neblina Trad Rendezvous. Two days of shooting unmarked 3Ds - my favorite kind of shooting, hands down. The first day I was having so much fun, and killing it! Then they posted scores Saturday night and I knew I could place if I shot well on Sunday. Helllllooo target panic! I wanted it, and then I fell apart. Folks have suggested giving up competing, but part of what I love about archery IS the competing. As I ve mentioned before, I ve come to the conclusion - through archery - that the key to a fulfilling and successful life is discipline and control. For me, archery epitomizes controlling my body with my mind. And so many aspects of life seem to boil down to controlling your movements, your thoughts, your actions and your words with your mind. Your words have meaning. Your actions have meaning. And everything has consequences. As we go into the Board Election, I hope that you will take some time reviewing the candidates, getting to know them, and thinking about who you want to shape the future of your Club. Please contribute to The Arrow! The Arrow will be sent out monthly on the ~15th, with the deadline for submissions on the 10th. Your contributions will make The Arrow even better! Please send scores, stories and photos to editor@sfarchers.org. The Arrow October

17 State of California - Natural Resources Agency DEPARTMENT OF FISH AND WILDLIFE Wildlife Branch 1812 Ninth Street Sacramento, CA EDMUND G. BROWN JR. Governor CHARL TON H. BONHAM, Director October 6, 2017 Nor Cal Bowhunters Association 6049 Sawmill Rd. Paradise, CA Dear Nor Cal Bowhunters Association, SUBJECT: EXPANSION OF THE LANDS PASS PROGRAM The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) is expanding its Lands Pass Program (Program) to include 43 wildlife areas and ecological reserves where visitors must possess a lands pass while on the property, unless they are carrying their valid California hunting or fishing license. We are asking for your help in spreading the word to your members. CDFW manages over 1 million acres of land, most of which is located on 247 ecological reserves and wildlife areas across the state. The majority of funding to manage these lands comes from hunters and anglers through a variety of federal and state programs. The State Legislature directed CDFW to develop more income for land management from user fees by expanding the Program, which is currently implemented at six CDFW properties. In August 2016, after a lengthy public review process, the Fish and Game Commission voted to add an additional 37 properties (see enclosed lists). In addition to visitors carrying their hunting or fishing license, visitors will be exempt from the lands pass requirement if they are under 16 years of age, or are part of a school or organized youth group field trip. This year, a daily lands pass costs $4.32 and an annual Lands Pass costs $ Please n,ote that a lands pass cannot be substituted for a hunting pass at a Type A or Type B wildlife area. Lands passes will not be required until the properties have signs posted that explain the requirement. One of the enclosed lists addresses the schedule for implementation. We are preparing additional public outreach to notify the public before the requirement go~s into effect. Conserc;ing Ca[ifornia's Wi[d[ife Since 1870

More information about the Lands Pass Program is at Please direct any questions to Julie Horenstein, CDFW Lands Program, at Julie.Horenstein@wildlife.ca.gov.. Thank you for your help with informing hunters and anglers about the need to bring their license with them whenever they visit a lands pass property.
