Isabella County Sportsman s Club Mailing Address: P.O. Box 363 Winn, MI Physical Address: 2872 W. Millbrook Rd. Winn, MI A Message from the President 4 th quarter 2015 The fall season is upon us and as the days get shorter and the nights get cooler, I start to focus more on the critters in the area, probably because the hunting season has arrived. I have always been interested in the animals around us, working as a wildlife biologist and manager for many years. During this past summer, we actually engaged in a little bit of habitat management at the ICSC. Winn Road project workers were allowed access to club property along Winn Road and a small clearing was cut to accommodate the transport of sand to the construction zone. Some of the trees that were cut were replaced with conifers, but most of the area was simply reseeded and the forest is being allowed to regenerate. Ample rainfall has jumpstarted the seed plot and the green grass is attracting deer and other animals on a daily basis. It is not uncommon to see deer, rabbits, and squirrels along the path while shooting a round of sporting clays. Ducks and geese are using the pond for a resting area as well. I get a feeling of satisfaction knowing that our 40 acre parcel not only provides enjoyment for recreational shooters, but a home for wildlife as well. Your ICSC is alive and flourishing. I hope you can make it out soon and enjoy the experience. Scott DeFrain ICSC President Field Archery Range Springs Back to Life Thanks to a very generous grant from the Pine River chapter of Whitetails Unlimited, the club has a brand new bank of field archery butts (excelsior bales) along with a three sided shelter to protect the bales from the weather. Jerel Konwinski, Dave Randall, Scott DeFrain, and Amy McGillvary spent six hours on Sunday, September 20, 2015 putting it all together. Thanks you very much to those individuals. There are concrete markers in the ground located in front of the target shelter marking distances from 5 yards to 50 yards in increments of 5 yards. Please use only paper targets. When done, please remove all well used targets and dispose of them in the trash barrel located near the shelter, in the burn barrel located on the trap range or in the dumpster located in the south west corner of the parking lot. Return the target pins to the bales so they are available for the next member to use. Broadhead arrows are not allowed on ICSC property at any time. Crossbows may only be shot at the target blocks in front of the excelsior bales. Thank you for your cooperation with this. Please be courteous and safe when sharing the range. Dave Randall ICSC Archery Chairman
Frank Dodd, an ICSC member and a certified CPL instructor, has once again, graciously, offered to teach a class for ICSC members at a greatly reduced cost. The usual cost for this training is $130 but it will be offered at the special rate of $65.00 for current members in good standing. That fee will include the text book for the class, eye and ear protection for use while working on the range, lunch, and a pistol to use while doing the hands-on part of the class. Those people participating in the class will need to supply at least 100 rounds of their own ammunition. The class will be held from 8 am-4 pm on Saturday, October 24, 2015 and will include 5 hours of classroom time and 3 hours of range time. Class size is limited to 20 people. If you are interested in taking this class, you will need to contact Frank Dodd directly. He can be reached by at centralmichigandefensetraining@yahoo.com or by telephone at (989) Hunter Safety Seeking Some New Leadership My name is Dave Randall and I am the lead instructor for the ICSC Hunter Safety program will be my 30 th year as a volunteer instructor for the D.N.R. s Hunter Education Program, the last 22 years of which have been with the ICSC. For those that don t know, the ICSC puts on one of the top hunter safety classes in the state. That reputation started well before I became a member and I am honored to continue that tradition. At our last class (in August), we had 66 students. All the students passed the class; 24 of whom got 0 wrong on the exam and 17 of whom got 1 wrong. That speaks volumes about the quality of the instruction that our students are receiving. The club has a very solid core group of instructors, along with many other volunteers who make my job as lead instructor much easier. I know I speak for many of the instructors when I say, there is so much gratification, pride, and fun in helping to insure that future generations of young people have a very solid foundation of hunting safety and ethical behavior to start their hunting careers with. The current ICSC board of directors has started using a survey as a part of every membership application, asking what club activities the member is most interested in. I would like to address those members who have indicated an interest in hunter safety. The club is always looking for individuals (male and female) who are interested in becoming involved with our program. Due to health issues, I recently informed the Board of Directors that I have to step down as the lead instructor following the fall 2016 class. I do not intend to stop teaching, and I am willing to mentor someone for two years as they assume the duties of lead instructor. As the lead instructor, you are responsible for making sure each area (archery, trap, rimfire, muzzleloader, and survival/first aid) has a lead instructor. Working with the leads for each area, you ensure that each area has enough volunteers and all of the materials that they need. The program lead is also responsible for all of the paperwork that goes to the DNR as well as a written report for the ICSC board of directors. We currently have a pretty well oiled machine that would be easy to start working with. Most of the instructors are slightly older than me and are getting to the point that some new, young blood is needed to continue or tradition of excellence. We are in need of some younger individuals to step up and take over. If this sounds like something that you might be interested in, please contact me, Dave Randall, at (989)
4 th Annual Isabella County Sportsman s Club Gun Show October 17, :00 am 4:00 pm October 17, 2015 is the date for the 4 th Annual ICSC Gun Show. The clubhouse was filled to capacity at our 2014 show with some 20 vendors offering a wide selection of firearms, both old and new. We also featured a firearm exhibit covering a selection of US Military small arms from the Civil War to the present. This year we are planning to host another great show and expect a large selection of firearms from our vendors. Once again we also are including a historical exhibit entitled: If Grandfather s Guns Could Talk! Have you ever wondered the stories an old hunting rifle or war relic could tell if it could talk? This unique selection of guns will take you beyond the visible wood and steel of a well-built tool with a write-up (or Grandfather) telling you its special story. So mark the date on your calendar. If you have something to trade, bring it along. If you are thinning out your collection, rent a table. We hope to see you there. Admission is $5.00 for adults / children under 12 FREE All non-vendor firearms will be checked at the door and supplied with an empty chamber/barrel indicator for safety Light concessions will be available Table Rental for Vendors - $25.00ea - LIMITED TABLES ARE STILL AVAILABLE For additional information or to rent a table, Please contact Scott Radtke, ICSC Board member at scradtke@gmail.com or call
3D Archery Course Re-Set, to Expand Next Year Page 4 1 P 4 21 The 3D archery course has been re-set with many new targets. There are 21 stations laid out on the property although currently there are only the first 16 stations set up for member use. It is the goal of the archery committee chairman to expand the course to 30 stations next spring. If you have not used the 3D archery course in the past, there is a box of hints below that should help you to get started. Please remember that broadhead arrows are not to be used on ICSC property at any time for any reason. Also, crossbows may only be used on the field range and shot at the target blocks provided for that purpose. Thank you for your cooperation with both of these important safety issues. Fall Work Bee The fall 2015 work bee is scheduled for Saturday, October 10 th beginning at 8:00 a.m. Lunch will be provided for all volunteers at 11:30 a.m. Our main focus for this work bee will be the wood pile that was left over after the Winn Rd. construction project. If we have enough volunteers, we would also like to get the weed whacking done around the buildings, under trees, and along the fence lines. Please bring chainsaws and wood splitters if you have them. We will have some extras for people who want to help but do not own that equipment. Please call or text Amy McGillvary at (989) with questions or to say you will be there so we can have a good count for lunch. Hints and tips for using the 3D course 1. Please park in the main parking area (P) 2. Walk across the trap range and proceed to station 1 (1) 3. Station 1 is on the west side of the dirt path/road shortly beyond the trap berm 4. Currently, stations 2 and 3 are also on the west side of the dirt road 5. Each station is clearly marked as you progress generally around the pond 6. Each station has 3 tall, white, PVC pipe markers. These are set to simulate as easier shot, a moderate shot, and a more difficult shot 7. Station 4 is near the Y in the path/road 8. Stations 8,9, and 10 are all grouped together and are shot from a raised platform 9. When you finish the course (station 16) follow the arrows leading to stations and you will come out near the back of the clubhouse (21) 10. No broadhead arrows allowed on ICSC property 11. No crossbows on the 3D course 12. Have fun! 13. Please let us know if you have questions or concerns Save the Date! The next cabin fever auction will be held on Saturday, March 19, 2016 at the Shepherd Bar. If you have questions or would like to make a donation, please contact Rich Nestle (989) or Dick Nethers (989) Wood for Sale The club is selling fire wood. The cost is $30.00 per cord if you want the pre-cut wood and $20.00 per cord if you cut your own. Please contact Scott DeFrain at (989) for more information or to make a purchase.
Page 5 Summer Work Bee a Great Success! Shout out to the 20 ICSC members(*) who came out to help on July 25 th! We were able to get many areas of the grounds cleaned up and looking spiffy. Open House/Pig Roast The annual open house/pig roast was held on July 18, Although the turn-out was lower than we had hoped for, the people who did come out were treated to a delicious meal prepared by ICSC member Dave Randall. *Jerel Konwinski, Amy McGillvary, Scott McNeal, Bob McJames, Jim Fleischman, Chris Petrimoulx, Scott DeFrain, Bruce Dehn, Dave Weisenburger, David Sembach, John Grajek, John Berry, Doug Hegenauer, Rich Nestle, John Stafford, Marianne McJames, Bryce Hegenauer. Patrick Smith, Sarah Nestle, and Daryl Potie. News from the Trap Range By: Dick Nethers, Trap Range Chairman We had a great summer on the trap range! A lot of people came out to shoot with very few Tuesday night rain outs. Along with members, nonmembers, and guest shooters, we also had many 4H shooters and their parents shooting with us. It s great that we have a solid mix of regulars and newbies each week. We shoot some double, wobble trap as well as regulation trap and scrap. There were lots of 22, 23, and 24 s shot with an occasional 25 (a perfect score). One of the 25 s that was shot was by a dad who had brought his son out for 4H. After talking with the dad for awhile, we asked him if he would like to shoot. He had no gun, no shells, but we fixed him up and put him out there with his son and three other shooters. When the round was over, his son went up to his dad and said, You ran them! Being the scorer, I confirmed that he had indeed run them he had shot his first ever 25! If you see Bray Haynes, Sr. around, tell him congrats on his first ever 25. The 4H trap shooters were very successful this summer. We had 4 senior shooters and 3 junior shooters make it to States. Wes Cole tied for 3 with Tyrel Hoover. Pat O Dell and Jacob Spickerman put in good rounds for the seniors. As for the juniors, Bray Haynes, Jr., Kevin Smith, and Andrew Wittbrodt represented Isabella County in a fine manner. Great job, 4H shooters! Fall is here and it is time to get ready for those game birds. Come on out on Tuesday evenings and get some practice in. Remember, practice makes perfect. We will continue to shoot on Tuesday evenings into November as long as there are people who want to shoot and are showing up to shoot. The winter trap league (and open shooting) will begin on January 9, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. Look for more information on the website, in , or the next newsletter.
Page 6 Nominations and Elections The nomination and election process for 2016 has begun. Nomination forms will be sent the week of October 12, 2015 to all members in good standing. Public Sight-In Days Scheduled The dates for our Public Sight-In program have been chosen for this year. The dates will be October 31, November 1, 7, and 8.
