David Six LADY PIRATES: VIRGINIA S BEST Since David Six s arrival, the Lady Pirates have been the best program in the Commonwealth of Virginia even better than such programs as Old Dominion, Virginia, Richmond, and Liberty. On top of six of the last eight MEAC Tournament titles, five straight MEAC regular-season titles, five straight NCAA Tournament appearances, and a WNIT appearance, the Lady Pirates are serving notice throughout Virginia. Over the past eight seasons, Hampton has the second-best record among Virginia s Div. I women s basketball programs, compiling a near.700 winning percentage during Six s tenure. James Madison Hampton Liberty VCU Virginia ODU Richmond Radford Virginia Tech George Mason William & Mary Norfolk State Longwood *records through the season.

5 Entering his ninth season as head coach of the Hampton University women s basketball program, David Six has already rewritten the history books. Already the longest-tenured coach in program history, Six has accomplished so far: 180 wins, most of any coach in program Div. I history. Six overall MEAC Tournament championships ( , 2017) Five straight MEAC Tournament championships ( ). Six overall NCAA Tournament appearances ( , 2017) Five straight NCAA Tournament appearances ( ). Five straight MEAC regular-season titles ( to ). One WNIT appearance (2015). Earned the program s first win in a Div. I postseason tournament in the 2015 WNIT. Hampton was a No. 12 seed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament (best for a MEAC school in the 64-team format). Hampton was a No. 13 seed in the 2011 NCAA Tournament. Five straight 20-win seasons ( to ). Three-time MEAC Coach of the Year ( , , ). Six-time MEAC Tournament Most Outstanding Coach ( , 2017). Four MEAC Defensive Players of the Year. Three MEAC Players of the Year. One MEAC Rookie of the Year. Twenty All-MEAC honorees. This past season will definitely go down in the history and memory books of Hampton University. Losing Malia Tate- DeFreitas (all-time Hampton Division I scoring leader), Ashley Bates (eventual All-Rookie team selection), senior point guard Chanel Green and junior center Kaylah Lupoe (in the MEAC title game) to season-ending injuries put the Lady Pirates through the test. The end result turned into a victory over Bethune- Cookman gave Six his sixth MEAC Tournament crown. The season saw the Lady Pirates win 14 games amidst a daunting non-conference schedule, before losing in the semifinals of the MEAC Tournament to North Carolina A&T. But guard Malia Tate-DeFreitas, one of the nation s most prolific scorers, was named MEAC Player of the Year for the second straight season and through three seasons, Tate-DeFreitas is third on the school s all-time scoring list (second among Div. I players, and just 28 points shy of LaShondra Dixon-Gordon). She was also a BoxToRow National HBCU Player of the Year, and a First Team All-State selection as named by both the Richmond Times-Dispatch and the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID). Tate-DeFreitas is the third MEAC Player of the Year during Six s tenure. In addition, sophomore forward Kaylah Lupoe was a Third Team All-MEAC selection last season, while freshman guard K lynn Willis was named to the All-Rookie Team. In all, 18 Lady Pirates have earned All-MEAC honors during Six s tenure. In , the Lady Pirates won 19 games and yet again sat atop the MEAC regular-season standings behind the performance of MEAC Player of the Year Tate-DeFreitas. Despite falling in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament to Maryland Eastern Shore which broke the Lady Pirates historic string of five straight MEAC Tournament crowns Hampton earned a berth to the WNIT. HEAD COACH DAVID SIX In the first round, the Lady Pirates defeated Drexel in a defensive struggle earning the program s first-ever postseason tournament win at the Div. I level. Tate-DeFreitas was also named First Team All-MEAC, while junior guard Ryan Jordan was a Third Team All-MEAC selection. In addition, Tate-DeFreitas who led the MEAC in scoring and ranked 14th nationally was named VaSID First Team All -State and was an ECAC Third Team All-Star. Hampton s first win of the season a victory at Penn was Six s 128th career win, making him the program s alltime winningest Div. I coach. He surpassed Patricia Cage-Bibbs on the all-time wins list with that victory. In seven seasons, Six is , and his.711 winning percentage is the second-highest in program history (and the best among Div. I coaches). During that time, Six s teams have gone in regular-season conference play including back-to-back 16-0 seasons in and This past season, Hampton went 11-5 in MEAC play. In , Six guided the Lady Pirates to a Div. I program record -tying 28 wins and their fifth straight MEAC Tournament title a feat that had never been accomplished in the history of the conference. For their efforts, the Lady Pirates earned a No. 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament the best seed ever for a MEAC school in the tournament s 64-team format taking on Michigan State. Six was named MEAC Coach of the Year for the second straight season and third time overall, while Tate-DeFreitas was named the conference s Rookie of the Year. Senior guard Nicole Hamilton was named First Team All-MEAC. Alyssa Bennett, a senior forward, was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season. Bennett was also a First Team All-MEAC selection; Tate- DeFreitas was named Second Team. Bennett s two MEAC Defensive Player of the Year awards, along with back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year honors for Quanneisha Perry in and , give the Lady Pirates four MEAC Defensive Players of the Year in the six seasons Six has been at the helm further highlighting his philosophy that defense wins both games and championships. In , the Lady Pirates led all of Div. I in scoring defense, holding opponents to just 47.8 points per game. That season, Hampton won 28 games, went undefeated in MEAC play, and won their fourth straight MEAC Tournament championship. Along the way, Six was named MEAC Coach of the Year and Keiara Avant became the first Hampton player ever to be named MEAC Player of the Year. The year before that, Hampton was second in the nation in scoring defense behind only UConn giving up 47.6 points per game. That season, the Lady Pirates also ranked fourth in the

6 nation in field goal percentage defense (.331) and fifth in turnover margin (+6.61). Hampton also led the nation in 3-point defense that season, giving up just 21.3 percent of shots taken from behind the arc. In , Hampton was 16th in the nation in scoring defense, holding opponents to just under 57 points a game. The Lady Pirates have ranked in the top 50 nationally in scoring defense in six of Six s first eight seasons. The season saw the Lady Pirates win 25 games and go 15-1 in the MEAC before winning their second straight conference tournament crown. That season included wins over the likes of James Madison and East Carolina both of which came on the road and the Lady Pirates were awarded a No. 13 seed to take on Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. At the time, that was the best seed a MEAC team had earned in the NCAA s 64-team format. In , Hampton was a perfect 11-0 at home. But the Lady Pirates have been just as strong on the road; during their eight seasons under Six, they have gone a combined in road games. Between the and seasons, the Lady Pirates were a combined on the road including a 13-1 mark in Hampton has been one of the flagship programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia since Six took over, boasting the secondbest winning percentage (.698) among the state s 13 Div. I schools over the past eight years. During that span, only James Madison has a higher winning percentage. Prior to being named the Lady Pirates head coach, his first collegiate coaching job, Six spent a year as the Director of Intramurals at Hampton University. That position came after Six established himself as one of Virginia s top high school coaches, embarking on a career that saw him win 331 games over 14 seasons and take home two state championships (2001, 2007). The Lady Pirates nearly pulled off the upset in Albuquerque, N.M., falling to the fourth-seeded Wildcats in overtime. That season, point guard Jericka Jenkins not only earned First Team All-MEAC honors, but the Associated Press recognized her as an All-America honorable mention marking the first time in program history that a Hampton player had been honored by the AP. Jenkins was second in the nation that season with 7.0 assists per game also saw Perry win the second of her back-toback MEAC Defensive Player of the Year awards. In Six s first season, , the Lady Pirates went 12-4 in ME- AC play to earn the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. From there, Hampton upended UMES, Bethune-Cookman, and South Carolina State to take their first MEAC Tournament crown since 2004 and earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament. The win over South Carolina State was Hampton s 20th that season, marking the first time since that the Lady Pirates had won 20 games. Six was the interim head coach that season, and following the Lady Pirates NCAA Tournament game at Duke, he was awarded with a multi-year contract. During his tenure, Six has never shied away from playing biggername schools; in his six seasons at the helm, the Lady Pirates has scored ten wins against schools from the six so-called power conferences: the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big XII, Pac-12, and SEC. They have defeated Auburn, Virginia Tech, Kansas State and Mississippi State among others. Six was a two-time Virginia High School Coaches Association (VHSCA) Coach of the Year, and in 2007 after leading Hampton (Va.) High School to the girls state title he was named Associated Press Coach of the Year. The Lady Crabbers were 30-2 that season. During his tenure as a high school coach, Six was instrumental in helping more than 30 players receive basketball scholarships, while transforming the Hampton High girls basketball program into one of the elite programs in the country. In addition to his two state titles, Six won one regional title, made 10 regional appearances, made five state Final Four appearances, won nine district titles, and won nine district tournament titles. From , Six was the boys varsity coach at Gloucester (Va.) High School, where he twice led the team to the Peninsula District Tournament. He is the only boys varsity coach to ever qualify for the district tournament at Gloucester. More importantly, Six s dedication, influence and strong leadership skills greatly contributed in many of the young women that he has coached excelling in a variety of professions to include a lawyer, entrepreneur, Rhodes scholar, two college coaches, four educators, and host of other young productive citizens. Six arrived in the Tidewater area in November 1985, by way of the United States Air Force. He was stationed at Langley Air Force in Hampton, Va. In , the Lady Pirates picked up a road win over Mississippi State and home wins over LSU and Boston College, before dropping close contests to both South Carolina and DePaul at the Paradise Jam. In , wins at Pitt and Boston College highlighted a 26-win season. Hampton s first win over a power conference school under Six came in the season, when the Lady Pirates beat Florida in the HU Convocation Center. At Langley, Six played base-level basketball, where he was selected All-Uni-Com for six straight years. After leaving the military, Six set his sights on coaching, where he began as a volunteer assistant for the varsity boys at Hampton High in He served in that capacity for two years before taking the reigns as the head girls varsity coach in Six is a native of Brooklyn, N.Y. Hampton has been almost unbeatable in the Convocation Center since Six took over, going a combined at home during his tenure. That includes a span from through where the Lady Pirates only lost twice at home, going a combined 32-2.

7 HAMPTON JOINS BIG SOUTH IN Hampton University is joining the Big South Conference, effective July 1, 2018, after a 22-year relationship with the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. The announcement was made on Nov. 16 in a joint Hampton University/Big South press conference at Hampton University's Student Center Theater. "The move to the Big South Conference is just another part of an exciting year at Hampton University," Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey said. "Institutions in the Big South are located in Virginia, North Carolina and South Carolina, which means that our student athletes will spend less time traveling and more time in classes on campus. This keeps the proper focus on academics, which is our chief reason for being. The smaller geographic footprint will also reduce travel expenses. Another important consideration is the large number of alumni located in the Big South region. We have enjoyed our 22-year relationship with the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and hope to continue competing against some of its teams." Big South Commissioner Kyle Kallander couldn't be more pleased for the conference and for Hampton University. "This is a big day for the Big South! We are so pleased that Hampton University is joining the Big South family," Kallander said. "We have always been impressed by Hampton's academics and athletics accomplishments under President Harvey's visionary leadership. We appreciate his interest and support of the Big South and look forward to working with him and the rest of Hampton's leadership to support our student-athletes. The Big South is a better conference with Hampton athletically, academically, and in providing outstanding opportunities for our student-athletes." WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR HAMPTON QUITE A BIT To paraphrase the UPS saying, there s no question what (Jephany) Brown can do for Hampton U. A 6-1 senior forward/guard from Washington, DC, Brown is leading the team in scoring (13.5 ppg) and in blocked shots (9). She was the MVP of the 2017 Mid- Eastern Athletic Conference Tournament and helped propel an injury-ravaged team to its sixth MEAC crown under head coach David Six. FINNEY-SMITH OFF TO HOT START Senior Monnazjea Finney-Smith started her final campaign with a blistering 25 point, 7-of-12 from 3-point land performance in Hampton s win at North Carolina on November 10 as she was named MEAC Player of the Week. She earned her second MEAC Player of the Week honor after a 24-point, 21-rebound outing against San Jose State on Nov. 25. A Portsmouth, Va. native, she was an All-Tournament selection at the 2017 MEAC Championships. COUNTDOWN TO THE TOP In his ninth year at the helm of the Lady Pirates, head coach David Six is currently one win from tying the all-time women s basketball coaching wins record held by James Sweat. Six is currently , while Sweat holds the record going from when the school was a NCAA Division II powerhouse. STARR LIGHT IS BRIGHT Graduate transfer Allina Starr has made quite an impression in her first few games in a Lady Pirate uniform. The Minnesota transfer as she opened with 11 points, eight assists, six rebounds and three steals as Hampton defeated North Carolina on November 10. On the year she is averaging 12.4 points, 5.9 rebounds and leads the team in both assists (38) and steals (23).
