But guard Malia Tate- DeFreitas, one of the nation s most prolific scorers, was named MEAC Player of the Year for the second straight season and through three seasons, Tate-DeFreitas is third on the school s all-time scoring list (second among Div. I players, and just 28 points shy of LaShondra Dixon-Gordon). In , the Lady Pirates won 19 games and yet again sat atop the MEAC regular-season standings behind the performance of MEAC Player of the Year Malia Tate-DeFreitas. Despite falling in the quarterfinals of the conference tournament to Maryland Eastern Shore which broke the Lady Pirates historic string of five straight MEAC Tournament crowns Hampton earned a berth to the WNIT. HEAD COACH DAVID SIX Hampton s first win of the season a victory at Penn was Six s 128 th career win, making him the program s all-time winningest Div. I coach. He surpassed Patricia Cage-Bibbs on the all-time wins list with that victory. In seven seasons, Six is , and his.711 winning percentage is the second-highest in program history (and the best among Div. I coaches). During that time, Six s teams have gone in regular-season conference play including back-to-back 16-0 seasons in and In , Six guided the Lady Pirates to a Div. I program record-tying 28 wins and their fifth straight MEAC Tournament title a feat that had never been accomplished in the history of the conference. For their efforts, the Lady Pirates earned a No. 12 seed in the NCAA Tournament the best seed ever for a MEAC school in the tournament s 64-team format taking on Michigan State. Six was named MEAC Coach of the Year for the second straight season and third time overall, while Tate-DeFreitas was named the conference s Rookie of the Year. Senior guard Nicole Hamilton was named First Team All-MEAC. Alyssa Bennett, a senior forward, was named MEAC Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season. Bennett was also a First Team All-MEAC selection; Tate-DeFreitas was named Second Team. Bennett s two MEAC Defensive Player of the Year awards, along with back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year honors for Quanneisha Perry in and , give the Lady Pirates four MEAC Defensive Players of the Year in the six seasons Six has been at the helm further highlighting his philosophy that defense wins both games and championships. In the first round, the Lady Pirates defeated Drexel in a defensive struggle earning the program s first-ever postseason tournament win at the Div. I level. Tate-DeFreitas was also named First Team All-MEAC, while junior guard Ryan Jordan was a Third Team All-MEAC selection. In addition, Tate-DeFreitas who led the MEAC in scoring and ranked 14 th nationally was named VaSID First Team All-State and was an ECAC Third Team All-Star. In , the Lady Pirates led all of Div. I in scoring defense, holding opponents to just 47.8 points per game. That season, Hampton won 28 games, went undefeated in MEAC play, and won their fourth straight MEAC Tournament championship. Along the way, Six was named ME- AC Coach of the Year and Keiara Avant became the first Hampton player ever to be named MEAC Player of the Year. The year before that, Hampton was second in the nation in scoring defense behind only UConn giving up 47.6 points per game. That season, the Lady Pirates also ranked fourth in the nation in field goal per-

11 In , Hampton was 16 th in the nation in scoring defense, holding opponents to just under 57 points a game. The Lady Pirates have ranked in the top 50 nationally in scoring defense in each of Six s first six seasons. The season saw the Lady Pirates win 25 games and go 15-1 in the MEAC before winning their second straight conference tournament crown. That season included wins over the likes of James Madison and East Carolina both of which came on the road and the Lady Pirates were awarded a No. 13 seed to take on Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. At the time, that was the best seed a MEAC team had earned in the NCAA s 64-team format. The Lady Pirates nearly pulled off the upset in Albuquerque, N.M., falling to the fourth-seeded Wildcats in overtime. That season, point guard Jericka Jenkins not only earned First Team All-MEAC honors, but the Associated Press recognized her as an All-America honorable mention marking the first time in program history that a Hampton player had been honored by the AP. Jenkins was second in the nation that season with 7.0 assists per game also saw Perry win the second of her back-to-back MEAC Defensive Player of the Year awards. In Six s first season, , the Lady Pirates went 12-4 in MEAC play to earn the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. From there, Hampton upended UMES, Bethune-Cookman, and South Carolina State to take their first MEAC Tournament crown since 2004 and earn a trip to the NCAA Tournament. The win over South Carolina State was Hampton s 20 th that season, marking the first time since that the Lady Pirates had won 20 games. Six was the interim head coach that season, and following the Lady Pirates NCAA Tournament game at Duke, he was awarded with a multi-year contract. During his tenure, Six has never shied away from playing bigger-name schools; in his six seasons at the helm, the Lady Pirates are 9-18 against schools from the six so-called power conferences: the ACC, Big East, Big Ten, Big XII, Pac-12, and SEC. Last season saw Hampton defeat Auburn, and the year before that the Lady Pirates defeated both Virginia Tech and Kansas State. In , the Lady Pirates picked up a road win over Mississippi State and home wins over LSU and Boston College, before dropping close contests to both South Carolina and DePaul at the Paradise Jam. In , wins at Pitt and Boston College highlighted a 26-win season. Hampton s first win over a power conference school under Six came in the season, when the Lady Pirates beat Florida in the HU Convocation Center. Hampton has been almost unbeatable in the Convocation Center since Six took over, going a combined at home during his tenure. That includes a span from through where the Lady Pirates only lost twice at home, going a combined In , Hampton was a perfect 11-0 at home. But the Lady Pirates have been just as strong on the road; during their six seasons under Six, they have gone a combined in road games. Between the and seasons, the Lady Pirates were a combined on the road including a 13-1 mark in Hampton has been one of the flagship programs in the Commonwealth of Virginia since Six took over, boasting the second-best winning percentage (.753) among the state s 13 Div. I programs over the past six years. During that span, only James Madison has a higher winning percentage. Prior to being named the Lady Pirates head coach, his first collegiate coaching job, Six spent a year as the Director of Intramurals at Hampton University. That position came after Six established himself as one of Virginia s top high school coaches, embarking on a career that saw him win 331 games over 14 seasons and take home two state championships (2001, 2007). Six was a two-time Virginia High School League Coaches Association (VHSLCA) Coach of the Year, and in 2007 after leading Hampton (Va.) High School to the girls state title he was named Associated Press Coach of the Year. The Lady Crabbers were 30-2 that season. During his tenure as a high school coach, Six was instrumental in helping more than 30 players receive basketball scholarships, while transforming the Hampton High girls basketball program into one of the elite programs in the country. In addition to his two state titles, Six won one regional title, made 10 regional appearances, made five state Final Four appearances, won nine district titles, and won nine district tournament titles. From , Six was the boys varsity coach at Gloucester (Va.) High School, where he twice led the team to the Peninsula District Tournament. He is the only boys varsity coach to ever qualify for the district tournament at Gloucester. More importantly, Six s dedication, influence and strong leadership skills greatly contributed in many of the young women that he has coached excelling in a variety of professions to include a lawyer, entrepreneur, Rhodes scholar, two college coaches, four educators, and host of other young productive citizens. Six arrived in the Tidewater area in November 1985, by way of the United States Air Force. He was stationed at Langley Air Force in Hampton, Va.
