In the NBA, trades occur frequently at a point midway through the season called the Trade Deadline. The foundation of mathematical decision-making starts with being able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide. Whether it is at home, at school, or shopping with friends, you use these skills everyday. In NBA Math Hoops, you add, subtract, multiply, and divide in order to find a shooter. Often times, however, when we get to division, the numbers don t divide evenly. Look at the example below: The example above show us how, in the past, we did not complete the division problem since the result would not generate a whole number a number without a decimal. This left us with only numbers to analyze! Today, however we are going to improve two mathematical skills so that you can always have results every time! We are going to learn how to divide and round! Directions: Follow the steps below for dividing and rounding, CAREFULLY. Use the rd column to copy the math as you follow each step. Math is at the core of creating and understanding statistics. In math and sports, the main way to analyze and understand stats is to find an average. An average is a calculated central value of a set numbers. Finding an average requires adding the numbers and dividing them by the amount of values. See the example below. 26 WEEK Basketball skills advanced game Basketball skills: offensive rebounds Learning Target: Multiplication and Division of single-digit and two-digit numbers. A unique feature of the Advanced Game is the offensive rebound option. In basketball, once a shot is taken, there s no telling who will come down with the ball. However, we do know the shot will either be a made shot or a missed shot. If the player misses the shot, someone on the same team still has a chance to grab the ball and shoot again. This is known as an offensive rebound. To go for your offensive rebound in NBA Math Hoops, there is a specific rule: You have to choose a player whose circle is generated from multiplication or division ONLY. FOR EXAMPLE: In order to go for your offensive rebound from the roll of 9 and (look to the right), you would have to choose either: 60, 6,,, or.

28 INCEnTIVES and OPPORTUNITIES INCENTIVES At three checkpoints during the NBA Math Hoops season, all participating educators are prompted via to report data from the Points Leaders chart. EVERY site that reports information receives a student, educator, and/or classroom reward! Available incentives vary, and can include: T-Shirts Gift Cards Jerseys Tickets Special Events ALL-STAR STUDENTS This year, we will recognize our most engaged students across the country as NBA Math Hoops All-Stars. All students who complete at least 0 games and 0 skills sheets by /0/7 will receive the special designation. Every All-Star will receive a certificate and a piece of NBA apparel from their favorite team. All-Stars will also become eligible to apply for the NBA Math Hoops National Championship Tournament, hosted at Stanford University from June -, 07. The top 6 students, as selected by the Learn Fresh team using the criteria on the following page, will receive an expenses-paid trip to California for themselves and a guardian! Applications will be accepted from All-Star students between //7 and //7. ALL-STAR EDUCATORS We will once again honor our 0 most dedicated educators with selection to the 07 Learn Fresh All-Star Teaching Team. During Summer 07, these standout educators will receive an expenses-paid trip to Denver, CO to participate in a special summit with Learn Fresh staff. In order to qualify for selection, each educator must have at least one student within their program achieve NBA Math Hoops All-Star status.

29 NATIONAL Championship HOW TO QUALIFY All students that achieve All-Star status are eligible to apply for a spot in the 07 NBA Math Hoops National Championship tournament, to be hosted at Stanford University from June -, 07. Students must complete at least 0 games and 0 curriculum pieces by Incentive Check # (/0/7) to qualify. All qualifying students will be prompted to complete the following application criteria with their teacher or program coordinator. HOW TO APPLY After achieving All-Star status by /0/7, qualifying students and their educators must complete the following items by //7.. A video no more than two minutes long that covers: - Who the student is and a little about his/her background, including what they like in school, hobbies, etc. - Their experience with NBA Math Hoops, what they like best about the program, some key moments or stories that they have from the experience, and how it has improved their skills and feelings about math. - Why they feel they should be invited to the National Championship tournament. Production value is not important. Recording with a cell phone camera is fine. Upload the video to Youtube as Unlisted.. A written recommendation from the student s educator that considers the consistency of the students investment and enthusiasm for the program, level of sportsmanship demonstrated, and their personal story. What obstacles have they had to overcome and how has NBA Math Hoops supported their growth? SELECTION CRITERIA AND TIMELINE All students will be evaluated using the following three criteria: usage data as reported at each checkpoint, their video submission, and the educator recommendation. Videos and recommendations must be submitted between //7 and //7. Selected students will be announced on //7.

30 TOURNAMENT GUIDELINES PLAYER SELECTION Students must draft players on site. All players from the current year will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Students may not select their team in advance. TIMING All games will be twenty minutes long, divided into two ten minute halves, and will use basic game rules. Use of the shot clock is mandatory for all participating teams. The shot clock runs from the roll of the dice to the flick of the spinner. Failure to complete the turn within the length of the shot clock results in a turnover. TIPOFF AND POSSESSION Each team will roll a die after the clock starts for the first half. The team with the higher number will go first, and will take possession on the corresponding side of the board (odd or even, based on the number rolled). The opponent will start on the opposite side. Teams switch sides of the board at halftime. MATH RULES Students work through the normal process of roll, calculate, select, and shoot. Rounding is optional, but basic division is mandatory. For example, if a team does not answer /=, the opposing team may call a steal. Calculators and cell phones are not allowed at the game table, and adults may not help students with any part of the gameplay experience. If caught, the game will be forfeited to the opponent. TECHNICALITIES An errant spin of the spinner results in a redo of the spin. Any spin landing on the line counts as a made shot. Turnovers and fast breaks are in play. You may not foul on a fast break. Scoresheets will not be used. All points are tallied on the scoreboard. STEALS The shot planner must be flat on the table while doing math. The defense may call a steal only after the offense places their player token on the selected shot, and before that shot is taken. If the steal is called correctly, the defensive automatically gets the ball and takes the same shot with the corresponding player. For example, if the offense had selected a green player, then the defense shoots with their green player automatically. If a steal is called incorrectly, then the offense automatically receives two or three points and the defense gets the ball. FOULS A maximum of five fouls are allowed per half, and should be tallied at the top of the shot planner. The defense may call a foul only after the offense places their player token on the selected shot, and before that shot is taken. The offense receives two free throws for a two point shot and three for a three point shot. Both teams must confirm that each shot is a make or a miss before a point is awarded. OVERTIME Overtime will last for three minutes, and will be repeated as many times as necessary until a winner is decided. Teams will tipoff again to start overtime, to determine which team goes first and on which side.
