Coach M.Gajic Coaching clinic Katowice 2011, Poland Bob McKillop, head coach of Davidson college Topics: Developing perimeter players Philosophy of leading team before, during & after the game
Coach M.Gajic My playing carrier: In 1972, I was signed by 76ers. In 1972, I was cut by 76ers. The 76ers record in that season was 5 wins and 42 loses. So, I WAS CUT BY THE WORST TEAM INBA In the world of competition, are you winner or are you surander? YOU MUST FIGHT! YOU MUST FIGH!YOU MUST FIGHT! Principles: SEE Communicate STAY LOW & POWERFULL CATCH & PASS Be an actor when you play game Hit first must hit first4 Everybody in spotlight Finish all you do(carmelo Antony never finish) 5 Rules in Offense: 1/ Catch & see YOU MUST SEE/YOUMUSTSEE/YOU MUST SEE! /No Ricky Rubio: Catch & drive/ 2/Attack space 3/ Help somebody 4/ The crack of screener ass swowing direction where you have to get the ball 5/ Finish cut
Coach M.Gajic Drills: 1/ Back door read defense over playerd back door Sprint to spot to catch 1-2 stop,(right left) change direction from lunge position mowing right left first. 2/The same but Defense sugs pull up 3/ The same but deffense comming close-rip and drive Rip = Shoulder to knee/shoulder to knee/ shoulder to knee 4/ The same but Catch, rip & go in the mid, 1 bounce. Pull up 5/ The same but Catch, rip= Shoulder to knee+ shoulder to belli biutton and go to the mid, one bounce only 5/ The same but step back move FinisH on different ways : Luy up/ pull up/ Euro step/ quick shot against blocker/ Rondo/ Curry move etc
Two important part of body to improve: 1/WRIST 2/ HIP TURNING/CATCH-RIP-TURN YOUR HIP/ -Give players Freedom & Responsibility, not only freedom. FREEDOM & RESPONSIBILITY TOGETHER They will grow quickly. -In USA refs never call 3 sec in transition Couple of automatic rules in offense 1/Player tend to catch the ball when penetrate to the base line- dribble out rule- DO NOT CATCH THE BALL WHEN D CUT YOU 2/ Dribble in the middle if next player is not open 3/ Hand off Teach players to play w/out dribble: Screeneng Drill No dribble, coach correct, drill principles and rules in offense, coach correct. When you catch, You must see: -Position of legs of your defender -Low post area -Player who use screen to catch the ball.
Philosophy of leading team before, during & after the game Some motivation exp. of NBA coaches: Pat Raily: He comes before the game in the looker room and assistant coach take him around the neck and starts to choke and try to sink Raily s head into the water.raly fight back and after couple of minutes he escape chocking and after that he jumped in front of players and said: Tonight I want you to fight like myself Other one is, with coach who trhrows epensive jacket in toilet and splashed it with the water and another one, who showed tattoo on his chest etc -Motivation based on emotions usualy last short because emotions last short. -Have your team play entire game with passion not only part of the game -My way of motivation: is not chocking, throving jacket into topilrt or showing tattoo, I want my players to believe, that they are going to win if they become better. We have 4 objectives, wheter we play game or practice 1/ Get better 2/play to win -fee you re not looser 3/every possession counts 4/Nave a fun I want my players to be just a little bit better, coach you control it. -Be intensive but in the same time put fun in practice Dead Ball Situations Jump ball -To win dead ball situations, you must be 100% concentrate 5-5 jump ball sit. -hit first-it s the same situations like you go to rebound -After you win dead ball situations ALWAYS ATTACK, don t stay on your heel? -If you face better team you must ATTACK tem
The first play- draw faul -If opponent have a dominant player always at the beginning isolate & backdoor him in offense -When we know that we can win jump ball situation, we re going to trap it again ATTACK BY TRAPPING -EACH TIME IS DEAD BALL SITUATION WE MUST SEE WHAT S GOING ON: time/opponent signls/opponent defense. BOB situations: -Do not rush for the ball, to inbound it -See your players- are they at designed spots, with bent knee and hands on knee -Do not take ball immediately from ref. BOB spread high -Always use 3 options to score: cutter, picker and second cutter
BOB the same only box aligment BOB the same but only side box
BOB option of spread high -During the game you put a goals to win: 13 x inbounds situations 1x jump ball situation- at the beginning 15x FT situations In total 28 possesions of the ball, tht you can win -Do everything to get in the head of opponent coach -Situations like back door/or/3pst +1 make opponent coach nervous -Also I want my team always to score last possession, and finish positive(end of quarters/ Free Throw Situation -Players at R spots have to stay with bent knee hands on the knee and feet together- if you have feet apart you can not react quickly and box out -If you are in Offense you must move feet from close together to apart -If you let Offense to rebound, then you re: -NOT CONCENTRATED -YOU RE PUSSY -You do not hit first SPEND TIME TO BE PERFECT.
