1 Teaching Passing Less Talk more passing (*POE = Points of Emphasis) the POE are what our coaches need to detect & correct during the drill detect errors that the athlete is making & correct them this is how they improve Phases of Teaching Phase A: 1 on 0 Technical teaching Phase B: coach guides the defense Phase C: 1 on 1 active defense Phase D: use in game situation Notes: The different game situations determine the type of pass. Read the defence to choose the type of pass you need. Passing is a need of every single player on the team. Let the players choose as many different types of passes as possible (build their own fantasy). Do passing with the left hand First & spend twice as long passing non-dominant side!!! Deliberate focus on POE often results in athletes focusing on performing the skills properly as such we should not be encouraging athletes to speed up or go harder if they have not yet mastered the skills. Encourage athletes to go as fast as their vision or focus allows don t sacrifice perfect execution of the skill for speed TIME DRILL/SKILL/POE POE 0-1 min INTRODUCTION - Passing Coach Intro: Passing as a relationship Passing is the skill that creates a good relationship between the players on the team. If you have an open teammate and you do not pass it, or make a bad pass= bad relationship (no trust). If you have an open teammate and you pass it, or make a good pass = good relationship (trust). Receiver: - HANDS PREPARATION (Receiver) Show your hands this communicates I want the ball & when & where - MAKE THE PASS SHORTER Step to the ball Passer: - POSITION WHERE THE BALL HAS TO BE RELEASED From shoulder (Phase 1) - ON TIME When your teammate is open - ON TARGET your receiver target - PASS UNDER PRESSURE (Pivot foot) Keep the ball in front of your pivot foot

2 1-3 min Intro & Demo Shoulder pass: leaves from shoulder & is passed in a straight line. Teach points of emphasis while demo triangle passing Try to always pass with arm on side target and pass only if players are showing a target with ready hands. Points of emphasis: -Passer & Receiver: shorten the pass Take a short step towards target - Ball should be at shoulder (phase 1) to pass - Finish pass with follow through like phase 3 of shooting (universal release) - The passer must bring the chest closer to thier knee (stay low) - Receiver must take a short step (be aware of footwork) towards the passer in order to shorten the pass. - receiver should be catching it on time (pylon- appointment spot) & on target 3-5 (1 min passing to left) (1 min passing to the right) Phase A ( no Defense) EXERCISE Triangle passing set-up: Progression teaching in groups of three. The players practice form passing (Left 1 st & then right) - shoulder pass Diag. A The passer looks at the receiver (eye contact) and waits to see the target hands of the receiver (target). -The passer takes a short step and makes a shoulder pass to the receiver. - The receiver steps with the foot closest to the passer when the ball leaves the passers hand (timing). -Upon catching the ball the receiver now pivots and makes a cross over step to make the next pass (the foot furthest from the original passer is the pivot foot) Note: The players should never cross their femurs when doing this drill. They will lose their balance. Detect & Correct - Passing POE above - Receiver footwork Dig A.

3 5 7 (1 min passing to left) Change Footwork: Stop & Demo Same drill however this time Circular pass & the receiver is catching ball with the foot closest to the passer (outside pivot foot) Demo Circular Pass: Leave from shoulder, but the ball moves outside the shoulder line to get around the defender. - Passer: Ball goes from leading receiving shoulder across body & released from the outside the shoulder line (no dip with ball) - Must get the ball away before pivot foot comes off the ground (1 min passing to the right) Upon catching the ball the receiver now pivots and makes an onside pivot/open step pass to make the next pass (catch ball with the foot closest to the passer) 7-9 Phase A: No defense Diag. B Triangle passing: make a dribble before the pass (passer). Practice both on side footwork and cross over footwork.. - Receiver is approximately 2 steps away from target (pylon) - Meet the pass (on time & one target) with a few short steps. C - Footwork: catch the ball with the foot furthest from the passer. - Now make a crossover step (the foot furthest from the original passer is the pivot foot) before the pass to the next receiver who is taking a few short steps from behind the pylon Change Footwork: On-side Pivot Ball must be out down on the floor BEFORE the pivot foot is lifted Passer: Same POE apply Receiver: Detect & correct travels Pivot foot foot furthest away from passer cross over step Dig B Phase B. Add Guided Defense Diag. C Add a soft defender. The same drill as Diag. A, (no dribble) but add a guided defender. Receiver: - Seal the defender before releasing to meet the pass. Detect & Correct! On-time ball should be received at the appointment spot (the pylon) not before the receiver gets there & not after On-target- ball received where the

4 Note: if the receiver wants to catch on target they must seal in a spot where they can release into the space where the pylon is Footwork: Do both crossover and same side dribble start footwork Dig C. receiver asks for it You will notice that if the receiver starts to catch the ball away from the appointment spot (the pylon) it make the next passing angle terrible which then often results in a bad relay pass Passer: Same POE - May give a bounce pass or onehand push pass Receiver: Seal the defender by sitting on their thigh & upper body seal is shoulder - We say whenever sealing to win the top foot war - Release seal when ball is in the air (if you release before then the defense can knock down the pass) The same drill as Diag. B, (dribble) but add a guided defender. Footwork: Do both crossover and same side dribble start footwork Debrief Ask Questions & let the athletes think! Don t simply talk at them - What indicates to your teammates that you want and are ready to receive the ball (A: Hands preparation show target) - Why should you pass with your outside hand? (A: protects the ball from your defender) - Where should the ball be released from? (A: shoulder) - What Phase is the this release from the shoulder? (A; Phase 1 or on) - What does a on target pass look like? (A: one that is received where your team mate asks for it) - What does an on time pass look like? (A: one that is received at the appointment spot pylon or on a court the attack spot {45 degree foul line extended three point line}) - What are the two types of footwork we you learned today? (A: crossover and on-side step) - What is the most import thing you need to do before you lift your pivot foot? (A: dribble) - What is the top foot war? - When should you release a seal? (A: when the ball is in the air) & Why (A: do the defense cannot knock down the pass)

5 Day 2 Teaching Passing Continued Less Talk more passing (*POE = Points of Emphasis) the POE are what our coaches need to detect & correct during the drill detect errors that the athlete is making & correct them this is how they improve TIME DRILL/SKILL/POE POE 0-1 min INTRODUCTION - Passing Review Points of Emphasis with Passing Same point of emphasis in game like situations Now going to put passing into game context (wing entry pass) Receiver: - HANDS PREPARATION (Receiver) Show your hands this communicates I want the ball & when & where - MAKE THE PASS SHORTER Step to the ball Passer: - On time (when receiver gets to attack spot shouldn t be waiting) - On target hitting their hands 1-3 min Phase A: Wing Entry Pass 1 vs 0 A. One line in each corner outside the three point line and one line with balls up top. Points of emphasis: Timing - Passer: The ball handler must

6 3-5 B. The coach stands behind the ball handler. C. The ball handler dribbles side to side scanning the court. The coach lifts an arm, signaling for the player on that side to cut and receive a pass. D. The receiver must time the cut to when the passer is ready. E. On the catch at attack spot, the receiver must keep moving and either attack middle or baseline (dynamic 1 on 1). F. The passer cuts to the basket and fills the spot of the receiver. Phase B - Back door passing (Guided Defense) deliver the pass on time to the appointment (outside the three point line foul line extended- attack spot). Shorten the pass: passer dribble onto the same side of the floor as the receiver. Shorten the pass by taking it to the appropriate side before passing. A. The same drill, but this time a pass fake from the shoulder signals for the cutter to cut backdoor. B. The passer must deliver a bounce pass in the key, or an over the top pass leading the cutter to the basket. C. After a few repetitions we will add a defender on the ball handler. Detect & Correct Pass needs to be received inside the key. No waste land catches (between the 3pt line & key) Load: The player without the ball will decide either to execute a back door cut or to catch and penetrate. Detect & Correct -Both passer and receiver must make the same read
