1 Learn to Train (Ages 9-12) Teaching Dribbling Less Talk more dribbling (*POE = Points of Emphasis) the POE are what our coaches need to detect & correct during the drill detect errors that the athlete is making & correct them this is how they improve TIME DRILL/SKILL/POE POE 0-1 INTRODUCTION - Dribbling Your eyes are you hands Q: Why would your coach tell you need to be able to dribble with your eyes up? A: because you do not need to look at the ball? Q: yes what should you be looking at? A: Use your sense of touch to see /feel the ball use your sense of sight to see your open teammates Eyes up we say this to ensure athletes can see open teammates, defensive traps and scan the rim (we no longer say head up ) Dribbles Phase A.: 1 vs. 0 Players line up on the baseline with a ball. On the coach s signal, players dribble the length of the court in 6 on less dribbles perforg the following skills in sequence:

2 EYES UP!!! Go only as fast as your vision -Imagine a defender when perforg your moves. -Over- Emphasize: - Change of speed (i.e. slow to set up, explode out) - Change of Direction When introducing a move talk about why & when you would use that. Speed dribble (Right hand/left hand) (fast break or I am quicker than my defender) - Push the ball out and front Crossover (defense lunges to steal or you see you can attack their top foot) - Ball goes pocket to pocket - Stay low - Change speed - Change direction Inside out (now defense is starting to jump hard to cut off my crossover give them a shoulder/eye fake read the jump perform inside out to go by) - Fake with opposite shoulder (opposite to the side you are dribbling)

3 - Manipulate ball push pull (inside out) Around the back (great defender picking your crossover must protect & go behind back) - On the move must wrap hand all the way around body (grab your opposite hip) to push ball out in front Note: don t want the athlete stopping) Through the legs - Same as cross over - Low - Change speed - Change direction Hesitation dribble (slow up to freeze the defense for a slight second then explode) - Stutter - Slow-up - Raise shoulders & EYES to rim - Explode by **Over emphasis change of pace** Retreat Dribble (crab) (see trap cog) Reattack same side - Attack 2 dribbles (see trap cog) - Retreat 2 dribbles ball protected at back foot - Re-attack same side 5-7 Repeat Retreat dribble only on retreat crossover drill to go by 6 Dribbles Phase B: 1 vs. Guided Defense (GD) A. Players partner up with one ball/group (on baseline) B. Offensive player dribbles down the court while the defender simply runs beside as close as possible. C. Offense Attack rim at 45 (finish at the rim) D. Switch offense/defense go back the other direction Load Drill: It is important that players learn to handle little bumps that occur when dribbling. E. Guided defender makes shoulder-to-shoulder contact with the offensive player while moving down -Eyes up -Offensive player keep ball in outside hand (farthest from defender- closest to sideline) KOB offense wants to initiate & maintain contact with the defender - Keep then behind you (on your shoulder) but maintain contact Weight on the outside foot when the contact occurs to absorb the contact by bracing themselves and pushing back.

4 the court (Offense must KOB (keep on back) while defense tried to push the dribble off their straight path) Load: Defender Bumping When the ballhandler is ready we want to add more contact. F. Guided defender puts the forearm on the dribblers hip and bumps (lightly) him/her every second dribble or random bumps G. Attack the rim at the 45 (finish at the rim) Stay low and lean into the defender by getting your head and shoulder in front of the defender s chest. These are fouls that often do not get called Phase C: 1 vs. 1, offense advantage A. On baseline - Defense starts one step behind facing the same direction the offensive player. B. Offense player initiates start of sequence on first dribble. C. Offense player: - KOB (Keep on back) if they feel pressure beside them - See the defenders chest bc they have recovered (attempts to get his/her body in front of the offensive player) Note: Defensive player must let the offensive player retreat and go by, or retreat, cross over and go by. - See chest retreat dribble (ball at back foot on retreat) reattack same side or cross over and go by - Feel pressure on shoulder (offense skill has the advantage) attempt to KOB

5 Once offense goes by defense offense goes by KOB and attack rim at 45 (finish at the rim) * Switch offense/defense* Phase D: Live 1 vs. 1 Same as above but live defense Defense starts in front of offense player Offensive player begins with dribble (Dribble initiates start) Offensive player can use any combination of moves to advance the ball and attack past the defender. If the offensive player gets by the defender KOB and attack the rim If the defender steals the ball from the offensive player, instruct them to quickly return the ball and continue playing. Switch offense/defense. EYES UP! Load the drill at any phase. For those athletes who need an additional load: Coach stands about 15 feet from where athletes start drill - After athletes begin drill you can Show ten fingers (target) athlete dribbling (with their eyes up)

6 recognizes the open teammate (the coach) & makes a pass (change it up sometimes give target other times don t no voice only ten fingers) - Coach pass back drill continues Debrief Ask Questions & let the athletes think! Don t simply talk at them - What does your hands are your eyes mean? (A: you can feel the ball and know where it is you don t need to look at it) - Why must you dribble with your eyes up? (A: to see a trap cog or see an open team mate) - What is one important thing to remember when doing a hesitation dribble? (A: over emphasize the change of pace (slow up) to freeze the defense) - When would you use an inside out dribble? (A: defense is starting to jump hard to cut off my crossover give them a shoulder/eye fake read the jump perform inside out to go by) - When would you use a speed dribble? (A: Fast break or I am quicker than my defender) - What type of dribble do I use when I see the chest of a defender? (A: Retreat or crap) - Where is the ball when I retreat dribble? (A: Back foot) - What does KOB stand for? (A: Keep on Back) - Why are we asking you to KOB? (A: so the defense cannot simply recover once you have gone by) - How does initiating contact with your defender help you as a dribbler? (A: you stay in control as you know where they are and it prevents them from simply recovering)
