ATTITUDE DISCIPLINE TOUGHNESS TEAM Offense T he Derek Dooley Era begins at Louisiana Tech as the first-year head coach takes over a program that boasts a history of success including 22 conference championship titles and two national championship titles. After struggling to a 3-10 mark in 2006, Louisiana Tech is ready to start taking the necessary steps to return the Bulldog program to the top of the Western Athletic Conference standings (Tech won the 2001 WAC title in the program s first year as a member of the league). Dooley comes to Louisiana Tech following a five-year stint as an assistant coach at LSU where he helped lead the Tigers to the 2003 National Championship and another two years with the NFL s Miami Dolphins as the tight ends coach. The sixth youngest head coach in the Division I ranks, Dooley knows what it takes to be a winner thanks in large part to growing up with a first hand view of one of the great college coaches in the history of the game - his legendary father Vince Dooley at the University of Georgia. If asked how many games he expects to win in his first year at Tech, Dooley will only talk about doing things the right way every day in practice, in the classroom and in life. He will talk about work ethic on and off the field. He will talk about paying attention to details. He will talk about the intangibles that build the foundation of the Bulldog program -- ATTITUDE, DISCIPLINE, TOUGHNESS, EFFORT and TEAM. Dooley says it s those five intangibles -- along with a lot of hard work -- that will give his team the best opportunity to compete on a weekly basis this fall. Quarterbacks New offensive coordinator Frank Scelfo will have a hand in not only the Bulldogs play calling but also the development of the Tech quarterbacks. Scelfo comes to Louisiana Tech after serving as the offensive coordinator at Tulane for a number of years where he mentored the likes of NFL signal callers Patrick Ramsey and J.P. Losman. Tech fans hope he has the same success in Ruston where he inherits a group of four returners. One of the most watched -- and talked about -- positions during spring practice was quarterback as senior Zac Champion, junior Joe Danna, sophomore Michael Mosley and redshirt freshman Ross Jenkins all started from ground zero with the new coaching staff. Frank Scelfo Offensive Coordinator Champion is the most experienced of the foursome after starting all 13 games under center last year for the Bulldogs. The 6-foot-2, 202-pounder completed 190-of-364 passes for 2,466 yards and 14 touchdowns during his junior season while also throwing 18 interceptions. He also rushed for 88 yards and one score. Mosley saw action in a backup role behind Champion last year and started to show signs of maturity as the season progressed. In the season finale against New Mexico State, Mosley passed for 133 yards and two touchdowns in only one quarter of action. 35

Zac Champion Michael Mosley Joe Danna Ross Jenkins Quarterback 10 Zac Champion (6-2, 202, Sr.) 13 Michael Mosley (6-2, 206, So.) 9 Joe Danna (6-4, 226, Jr.) 11 Ross Jenkins (6-2, 203, Fr.) For the season, Mosley -- who possesses the strongest arm of the group -- completed 24-of-49 passes for 321 yards and three touchdowns while throwing only one interception. Danna and Jenkins both red-shirted last year in their first season on the Tech campus. Danna signed with Tech prior to last season out of Blinn Junior College where he earned all-southwest Junior College Conference honors as a sophomore despite playing in only seven games. He has good size at 6-foot-4 and 226 pounds. Jenkins, who signed with Tech out of Langham Creek High School in Texas, struggled during much of the spring but came on in the spring game to lead his team to victory with a pair of touchdown passes late in the fourth quarter. Running Backs One of the deepest areas for Louisiana Tech entering this season is at running back where the Bulldogs return their top three rushers from a year ago while also welcoming some new blood into the mix. Patrick Jackson, Daniel Porter and William Griffin all saw significant playing time last year with Jackson carrying the bulk of the load on his Patrick Jackson Daniel Porter Myke Compton William Griffin 36 way to earning second team all-western Athletic Conference honors. Prior to the 2006 season, the Louisiana Tech coaching staff was so confident in Jackson s ability that they moved the Bulldogs leading rusher the previous season (Mark Dillard) over to the defensive side of the football. Jackson, who was the recipient of the Fourth Quarter Award this spring, responded by rushing for 854 yards and seven touchdowns for the Bulldogs despite missing a game while also snaring 22 passes for 181 yards. He registered two Running Backs 23 Patrick Jackson (5-10, 193, Jr.) 20 Daniel Porter (5-9, 189, So.) or 26 Myke Compton (5-8, 190, Fr.-RS) or 2 William Griffin (5-10, 203, So.) 100-plus yard rushing performances including a career-high 136 yards in the season finale against New Mexico State. He was also Tech s top kickoff returner, averaging over 24 yards per return while also becoming the first Bulldog since 1989 to return a kickoff for a touchdown (100 yards vs. Fresno State). As a true freshman, Porter played well. In his first career action, he rushed for 58 yards on 10 carries against Top 25 Clemson before topping that the following week with 65 yards in the fourth quarter against Top 10 Boise State. Due to a Jackson injury, Porter started at tailback against Utah State and rushed for 178 yards and one score on 24 carries. For the year, he totaled 464 yards and two scores while averaging 5.7 yards per tote. Griffin also saw time as a true freshman rushing for 174 yards and one touchdown on 45 carries while also catching five passes for 29 yards. Griffin had a stretch of four straight games midway through the season where he contributed by rushing for more than 30 yards in a reserve role off the bench. Red-shirt freshman Myke Compton should also see some time this year while newcomers Allen Gilbert, Phillip Livas and Roosevelt Falls will join the mix. Falls will serve as the Bulldogs fullback.

Anthony Harrison Dennis Morris Dustin Mitchell Clayton Chambers Tight Ends Tight end is another area on the offensive side of the football where Dooley and Co. have some talented depth in junior Anthony Harrison, sophomores Dennis Morris and Dustin Mitchell and red-shirt freshman Clayton Chambers. Due to injury, Harrison struggled during his sophomore campaign catching only one pass for 13 yards after earning honorable mention freshman all-american honors the previous season. Morris was an impact player as a true freshman and ended the season with 16 receptions for 284 yards and three touchdowns. The Shreveport native made his mark early in the year when he caught for over 100 yards with a pair of 50-plus yard receptions against the Aggies. His impressive 25.8 yard per catch average led all Bulldogs as did his three receptions of 50 plus yards. Mitchell saw action as a freshman, mostly as a blocking tight end and on special teams play as he didn t register a reception during the season. However, the Bulldog coaches are high on him and feel he has the potential to be a well-rounded tight Tight End end. 47 Anthony Harrison (6-3, 242, Jr.) 49 Dennis Morris (6-2, 264, So.) or 43 Dustin Mitchell (6-4, 245, So.) 84 Clayton Chambers (6-5, 228, Fr.-RS) Chambers red-shirted last year after suffering a season-ending knee injury during fall drills but returned to the practice field this spring and should be 100 percent by the start of the season. Wide Receivers Brian Jackson Josh Wheeler Shane Womack Earl Griffin Philip Beck Shawn Simmons Rod Handy Carl Turner Wide receiver is the position hit hardest by graduation as the Bulldogs lost their top two receiving threats from a season ago in Eric Newman, who signed a free agent contract with the Atlanta Falcons, and Johnathan Holland, who was drafted by the Oakland Raiders in the seventh round. Junior Josh Wheeler is the top returner at this position after registering 25 receptions for 503 yards and a team-high four touchdowns last season. The 6-foot-4-inch target has good hands and the ability to make plays as his 20.1 yard per catch average last year proves. Wheeler caught at least one pass in all 13 games last year while snaring touchdowns against Texas A&M, Nicholls State and two against Utah State. After Wheeler s 25 receptions, the next highest mark by a returning Bulldog receiver is three as senior Rod Handy, juniors Shane Womack and Earl Griffin, sophomore Brian Jackson all caught three passes last year. Jackson made a name for himself this spring, earning the Big Lick Award for his work during spring drills. The 6-foot-3, 216-pounder is a physical target for the Tech quarterbacks. As a red-shirt freshman, Jackson caught three passes for 46 yards and one touchdown. 37

WR 19 Shane Womack (6-2, 208, Jr.) 88 Earl Griffin (5-10, 210, Sr.) WR 3 Brian Jackson (6-3, 216, So.) 82 Philip Beck (5-10, 177, Jr.) 87 Rod Handy (6-1, 216, Sr.) Tyler Miller Ryan Considine David Accardo WR 81 Josh Wheeler (6-4, 204, Jr.) 8 Shawn Simmons (6-0, 184, So.) 38 Womack (3-26 yards) and Griffin (3-41 yards) should both see significant playing time this year as well and are both in the competition for a starting role. Sophomore Shawn Simmons and Handy will also provide depth for the Bulldog receiving corps heading into the season while newcomers Jasmine Dalton, Joseph Anderson and Philip Beck could also see time. LT 73 Tyler Miller (6-7, 314, Sr.) 74 Rob McGill (6-7, 292, Fr.-RS) 72 Will Taylor (6-4, 283, Fr.-RS) LG 66 David Accardo (6-4, 318, Jr.) 75 Dwight Alexander (6-5, 278, So.) C 60 Lon Roberts (6-3, 272, Fr.-RS) 69 Greg Greathouse (6-4, 266, Fr.-RS) RG 78 Ryan Snell (6-5, 306, Jr.) or 62 Ben Harris (6-4, 280, Jr.) RT 63 Ryan Considine (6-6, 297, Gr.) 76 Cudahy Harmon (6-8, 320, Fr.-RS) 70 Kevon Bagot (6-6, 352, Sr.) Lon Roberts Ryan Snell Ben Harris Offensive Line The Louisiana Tech offensive line was solid last year despite playing against some of the top defensive linemen in the country such as Clemson s Gaines Adams (5th pick of 1st round to Tampa Bay) and Nebraska s Adam Carriker (13th pick of 1st round to St. Louis). The Bulldog offensive line paved the way for both Patrick Jackson (5.0) and Daniel Porter (5.7) to average at least five yards per carry. Three of the five starters return although Tech lost center Jacob Peeler and right guard Marcus Lindsey to graduation. Coming out of spring drills, four of the five spots on the Tech starting offensive line are all but set with the fifth position still up in the air. Left tackle Tyler Miller, left guard David Accardo, and right tackle/ guard Ryan Considine have all nailed down starting positions. Lon Roberts, who earned the Surprise of the Spring Award on the offensive side, leads the race for the starting center spot. Ryan Snell and Ben Harris are the top two candidates for the right guard position. Miller, Accardo and Considine all started every game last year for Tech with Miller being the most experienced of the group having made 26 career starts, including a streak of 24 straight. Considine earned the Dawg Fight Award this spring for his efforts in the Bulldogs off-season conditioning program. Roberts is a red-shirt freshman who took the lead for the starting center position during spring camp although he

2007 Season Preview Rob McGill Will Taylor Cudahy Harmon hasn t been officially named the starter as he is battling another red-shirt freshman in Greg Greathouse. Miller and Considine -- who has started at both right guard and right tackle during his career -- are considered the two anchors to this group which will have the luxury of blocking for a group of experienced skill position players in Tech boasts a group of inexperienced yet talented backups including red-shirt freshmen Rob McGill, Greathouse, Cudahy Harmon and Will Taylor and sophomore Dwight Alexander and senior Kevon Bagot. Jon LeBlanc and Jared Miles are two incoming freshman who will begin practice with the Bulldogs this fall. Greg Greathouse Defense Defensive Line Kevon Bagot Dwight Alexander The Louisiana Tech coaching staff knows in order for the Bulldogs to be successful in 2007 the defense has to improve drastically from a year ago when it was ranked last in the nation. Tech will switch to Randy Grigsby a 4-3 defense this year under new defensive coordinator Tommy Spangler, who came to the program after serving as the head coach at Tommy Spangler Presbyterian College. Defensive The good news is Coordinator Tech returns plenty of experience as 10 starters are back with only safety Dez Abrams (graduation) no longer in the mix. Wes Day Success by the Bulldogs front four will be critical in the new system. The two cogs in the middle are senior defensive tackle Josh Muse and sophomore defensive tackle D Anthony Smith who both LE started the majority of games last season. Muse is an all-wac talent who registered 48 tackles a year ago despite missing the majority of four games due to injuries during the middle and latter portion of the season. The starting right tackle is an impressive run stopper in the middle for Tech. RE Breon Jackson and Jason Lewis are both penciled in behind Muse at the right tackle position heading into fall camp but neither player has a lot of experience. Jackson, who has worked hard to get down to a reasonable playing weight since he arrived on campus, registered two tackles last year in a reserve role. Lewis, who is a converted offensive lineman, saw action in less than half the games last year and recorded one tackle. Ben McGilton Chris Pugh Nick Narcisse Mark Cassimere 85 Randy Grigsby (6-3, 242, Fr.-RS) 94 Wes Day (6-4, 244, Jr.) 93 Nick Narcisse (6-3, 235, Fr.-RS) 98 Ben McGilton (6-2, 245, Sr.) 41 Chris Pugh (6-3, 235, Sr.) 99 Mark Cassimere (6-4, 225, So.) 39

LT 5 D Anthony Smith (6-2, 292, So.) 97 Jason Lewis (6-4, 315, Sr.) Ramone Randle (6-2, 297, Fr.) RT 92 Josh Muse (6-3, 315, Sr.) 95 Breon Jackson (6-1, 307, Jr.) Smith started eight games last year as a true freshman -- a few at defensive tackle and a few at defensive end -- and was one of Tech s brightest spots on the defensive side of the football. He started his college career off with a bang, registering an interception against the Nebraska Cornhuskers in only his second career snap. For the season, Smith registered 38 tackles, including 3.5 tackles for loss. Coming out of spring, Mark Cas- simere is the only player listed behind Smith on the depth chart at left tackle. Cassimere saw very limited action last season, recording one tackle. Newcomers Ramone Randle, Kris Cavitt and Mason Hitt will arrive this fall and are expected to immediately compete for playing time this year at the defensive tackle position. The Bulldogs boast three defensive ends with plenty of collegiate experience as Ben McGilton, Wes Day and Chris Pugh all return for another year. McGilton and Pugh are competing for the starting nod at right end. McGilton started all 13 games last year, the majority of those starts coming at the end position where he finished the year with 25 tackles, including 5.5 tackles for loss. Pugh came on strong about the midway Josh Muse Breon Jackson point of last year and ended up leading all Tech defensive linemen with 44 tackles, 6.0 tackles for loss and 3.5 sacks. Despite making only five starts all year, his efforts earned him honorable mention all-state honors Day is the most experienced of the Bulldogs at the left end position but found himself in a battle with redshirt freshman Randy Grigsby all spring. Day, who is an academic all-wac selection, finished last year with 25 tackles and hopes to surpass that mark this year. Grigsby, who is a Ruston native, earned the Surprise of the Spring Award on the defensive side of the football and enters fall camp No. 1 on the Bulldog depth chart. Time after time during spring scrimmages, Grigsby made big plays for the Bulldogs and caught the eye of the coaching staff. Nick Narcisse, who participated in spring camp, Jarod Barron and Matt Broha are all newcomers who will compete this fall for playing time at the defensive end position. D Anthony Smith Jason Lewis Ramone Randle SAM 45 Marquis McBeath (5-11, 228, Sr.) 36 Brian White (6-1, 217, So) 54 Nolan Darby (6-2, 223, Jr.) MIKE 58 Brannon Jackson (6-1, 256, Sr.) 44 Anthony Crosby (5-11, 230, Sr.) 42 Chris Lowery (6-0, 216, Sr.) WILL 37 Quin Harris (6-2, 221, Jr..) 46 Marvin Lubin (6-0, 215, Jr.) 55 Tim Reddick (6-2, 221, Jr.) 50 Joe Thomas (6-2, 221, Fr.) Linebackers 40 With the switch to the 4-3 defense this year, Louisiana Tech finds itself with some much-needed depth at the linebacker position as all four starters from a year ago return along with a fifth linebacker who earned two starts during the season. Four of the top five tackle leaders from 2006 are in this group as junior Quin Harris joins seniors Marquis McBeath, Anthony Crosby and Brannon Jackson. Harris, who earned the Fourth Quarter Award this spring, will start at the WILL linebacker position for the Bulldogs after making 13 starts a season ago. He led the Bulldogs with 95 tackles and ranked among the nation s leaders in fumble recoveries (4) and forced fumbles (3) while earning first team all-state honors by the LSWA. Quin Harris Brannon Jackson Marquis McBeath Anthony Crosby Chris Lowery Brian White

Marvin Lubin Tim Reddick Nolan Darby Joe Thomas Senior Marvin Lubin, junior Tim Reddick, and redshirt freshman Joe Thomas will provide depth at WILL linebacker. Lubin is the most experienced of the group having registered 21 tackles for Tech last year while seeing action in every game. The Bulldogs have the luxury of having three MIKE linebackers who all started games last year as seniors Brannon Jackson, Anthony Crosby and Chris Lowery all return for another season. Jackson, who missed all spring camp with a nagging injury, is the odds on favorite to start the season at MIKE linebacker having made 22 starts over the last two years. He ranked fifth on the team with 67 tackles a year ago and is Tech s current career tackles leader with 131. Crosby made six starts at middle linebacker in 2006 and finished third on the team with 70 tackles. The academic all-wac honoree forced two fumbles during the season while also registering a career-high nine tackles against Idaho. Lowery only made two starts but saw action in all 13 games for Tech. The junior college signee finished the year with 41 tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss and should see plenty of action this year. Senior Marquis McBeath returns to anchor the SAM linebacker position after starting all 13 games a year ago for the Bulldogs. Another junior college transfer, McBeath finished second on the team with 80 tackles during his first season at Tech while also registering 4.0 tackles for loss, four pass breakups and two fumble recoveries. Sophomore Brian White and junior Nolan Darby should provide quality backup at the position with both having good showings during spring drills. White recorded six tackles and Darby two during limited action in Kiamni Washington, Dusty Rust and Jay Dudley are three high school linebacker signees that will arrive on campus for the start of fall drills. Secondary Weldon Brown Mark Dillard Antonio Baker Louisiana Tech struggled against the pass in 2006 but the Bulldog coaching staff is hopeful that with a year under their belt, the returners will take some big steps forward this season. Tech returns plenty of experience in the defensive secondary. The Bulldogs top three cornerbacks heading into the fall are junior Weldon Brown and Tony Moss Shalamar Walker seniors Shalamar Walker and Tony Moss who all started at least four games in Brown, who earned the Dawg Fight Award this spring, is considered the most talented of the Bulldog cover men and is expected to start at right cornerback. Originally a running back for Tech, Brown started seven games at defensive back last year before missing the final four due to injury and ended the year with 24 tackles and three recovered fumbles. Junior college transfer Stevon Howze -- who participated in spring drills -- will back Brown up at right corner. Howze signed with Tech out of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College where he led the program to the 2005 state title. Walker and Moss are vying for the starting position opposite Brown. Moss started all 13 games a year ago and ended with 58 tackles and two pass break ups. Walker played sparingly early in the year but due to injuries was forced into action. He responded by leading Louisiana Tech with three interceptions while also registering 31 tackles and three pass breakups. SS 29 Mark Dillard (5-11, 210, Sr.) 25 Deon Young (5-11, 197, So.) 24 Adrian Linwood (6-1, 206, Fr.) FS 34 Antonio Baker (5-11, 200, So.) 16 Justin Johnson (6-0, 209, Sr.) 41

2007 Season Preview A pair of true freshman defensive backs will be in LC camp this fall in Terry Carter and Josh Victorian. 1 Tony Moss (5-11, 185, Sr.) Much like the cornerback position, Tech returns 18 Shalamar Walker (6-0, 175, Sr.) plenty of experience at both free and strong safety as senior Mark Dillard, sophomore Antonio Baker, RC sophomore Deon Young and senior Justin Johnson all recorded double digit tackles in Weldon Brown (5-10, 184, Jr.) Dillard and Young are the top two Bulldogs at 27 Stevon Howze (5-9, 170, Jr.) strong safety heading into the fall. Dillard -- who was the Bulldogs leading rusher in 2005 before being moved over to defense prior to last season -- started 10 games in 2006 (missing three due to injury). On the season, Dillard, who was the recipient of the Big Lick Award this spring, recorded 58 tackles and two interceptions. Young saw action in all 13 games last year as a red-shirt freshman and responded by recording 13 tackles for the Bulldogs. He was also instrumental in a number of the Bulldogs special teams units. High school signee Adrian Linwood arrived in spring camp after graduating from North Garland High School at mid semester and participated in drills. Deon Young Justin Johnson Stevon Howze Adrian Linwood 42 He is penciled in on the depth chart behind both Dillard and Young at strong safety. Baker joined defensive lineman D Anthony Smith as the biggest impact freshmen on defense last year for the Bulldogs and returns to try to improve on an impressive stellar rookie campaign. In 2006, Baker started six games for the Bulldogs but still finished fourth on the team with 68 tackles, while also recording two interceptions, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Johnson is the odds on favorite to back Baker up at free safety. Johnson recorded 10 tackles last season while seeing action in all 13 games, including work on the Tech special teams units. Newcomers Tarence Calais and Dominique Faust will also be in the mix at the safety positions when they arrive on campus this fall.

Special Teams When anyone starts talking about the Louisiana Tech special teams units, they have to start with Bulldog kickoff return specialist Patrick Jackson. In only two years as a Bulldog, Jackson has already etched his name into the Louisiana Tech record books among the top returners in the program s history. While earning second team all- Western Athletic Conference honors as a return specialist, Jackson averaged over 24 yards per attempt. He also became the first Tech player since 1989 to return a kickoff for a touchdown when he tied the Bulldog record with a 100-yard highlight reel return against Fresno Danny Horwedel Brad Oestriecher Chris Keagle Thomas Graham State in Jackson already ranks in the Top 10 in most returns (46) in a career and most return yardage (1173) in a career. Jackson could be joined on the kickoff return units by junior Weldon Brown, junior Philip Beck or red-shirt freshman Myke Compton. Brown returned 21 kickoffs in 2006 for a 23.4 yard Austin Kesterson per return average with a long of 50 yards. One of the big questions for the Bulldog special teams will be at punt returner where Tony Moss is the lone player on the squad with any Division I collegiate experience. Moss returned two punts in Besides Moss, Shalamar Walker and Philip Beck all worked on returning punts during spring drills and the job will still be up in the air heading into fall camp. Louisiana Tech does return a couple of experienced place-kickers in seniors Danny Horwedel and Brad Oestriecher. Horwedel, who has been a Lou Groza Watch List candidate on more than one occasion, connected on 8-of-12 field goals and 30-of-31 extra points last year and has already moved into the Tech career scoring and kicking record books. Oestriecher has been used primarily as the Bulldogs kickoff specialist but has also seen some work with long field goals. Chris Keagle returns for his third season as the Tech punter. PK P 31 Danny Horwedel (6-0, 206, Sr.) or 33 Brad Oestriecher (5-11, 184, Sr.) 15 Chris Keagle (6-0, 233, Jr.) DS 52 Thomas Graham (5-10, 229, So.) 51 Austin Kesterson (5-10, 197, Fr.) 43 As a sophomore, Keagle averaged 38.4 yards per punt in 66 attempts while downing 16 inside the opponents 20 yard line. Horwedel also handled some punting duties last year when Keagle suffered a slight injury and averaged 37.2 yards per punt in four attempts. Sophomore Thomas Graham will serve as the Bulldogs deep snapper on extra points, field goals and punts after handling those duties last year.
