6 August 26. Six other OVC teams will play on Thursday, August 31 while the fi nal two teams will play on Saturday, September 2. The OVC is made up of nine footballplaying schools in Since its beginning, 15 of the 18 total schools that have played football in the league have claimed at least one championship. I-AA No More: Although some people may still refer to it as I-AA football, the term that represents the level of Division I football in which the Ohio Valley Conference competes has been long retired. Beginning with the 2006 National Championship game, the term Football Championship Subdivision (or FCS) is to be used. Teams who play at the FCS level can offer a maximum of 63 scholarships (Football Bowl Subdivision teams can offer 85) and compete in a 24-team playoff at the end of the season to determine the national champion. OVC Digital Network: The OVC launched the OVC Digital Network (OVCDN) in August The OVCDN is the exclusive home for live web streamed athletic contests involving OVC schools. Overall marks the 12th year the OVC has streamed live events. Starting with the re-branding of the streaming in , events were offered free of charge and in an HD format and featured improved quality thanks to an investment in new equipment conference-wide. Fans also fi nd it easier to log onto OVCDigitalNetwork.com and access the streams and can do so without any registration. The events are available on any computer, tablet or smart phone without needing any special downloads or apps; the league has also launched a Roku channel so fans can watch even more easily on their televisions. The games are also available on-demand immediately following the end of the contest. Approximately 36 OVC football games will be available on the OVCDN this season OVC Football Weekly Release - October 2 6

YORK TROPHY The 2017 season marks the 11th of competition for the Sergeant York Trophy, an award created by the Nashville Sports Council and the Ohio Valley Conference. The trophy is contested between the four OVC football-playing schools in the state of Tennessee - Austin Peay, Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin - and goes to the team with the best combined record versus those schools in a given year. The 2017 season is the fourth that the award has been presented by Delta Dental of Tennessee. In the event of a tie, the award will be shared; however, the previous winner will retain the trophy if they are part of the tie. If the tie is between two other institutions, the trophy will go to the institution that has gone the most seasons without winning the trophy. The award is only the second traveling trophy that involves more than two teams in college sports; the other is the Commander in Chief s Trophy which has been contested between Air Force, Army and Navy annually since The award is named in honor of Alvin C. York, the most noted Soldier of World War I. Upon his return to the United States in 1919, he was bestowed the Congressional Medal of Honor. Following the war York returned his home in Pall Mall, Tenn. where he dedicated his life to improving education and facilitating educational opportunities for children in the state of Tennessee. Last season Tennessee State, Tennessee Tech and UT Martin were each 2-1 to share the Sgt. York Championship. After tiebreakers UT Martin took home the traveling trophy for the third-straight year. The ground attack was balanced with Ladarius Galloway and Ty Brown each getting 69 yards. EKU had won three in a row against TSU before falling a season ago in Nashville. The Tigers gave up 584 yards of total offense but scored 21 points off Colonel turnovers in the win. SCOUTING TENNESSEE STATE: After starting the season 3-0 (including a FBS victory), Tennessee State has now suffered back-to-back losses to begin OVC play. The Tigers struggled putting points on the board, falling behind 10-0 early in the second quarter. TSU finally hit pay dirt on a one-yard touchdown run by Earl Harrison and used a Lane Clark 51-yard fi eld goal with 3:18 to play to force overtime. Clark added fi eld goals of 36 ad 40-yards in the extra period but the Tigers lost on a one-yard quarterback sneak by EIU. Clark was named OVC Specialist of the Week; his 51-yard fi eld goal was the sixth-longest in TSU history (and in the FCS in 2017). After missing three fi eld goals in the season opener, Clark is now 6-for-9 on the year. Senior linebacker Chris Collins fi nished the game with 10 tackles, including 1.5 tackles-for-loss; he ranks second in the OVC and 30th in the FCS in tackles/ game (9.4). The Golden Eagles are now 0-5 for fi rst time since 1991 (a season they started 0-6). That losses have come against a tough schedule which has included a FBS opponent, two nationally-ranked FCS teams and another FCS team who is currently 3-1 on the season. TTU held Jacksonville State to just 14 points in the fi rst half (with seven of those coming in the fi nal 20 seconds) thanks to forcing a fumble and picking off two passes. On Saturday redshirt freshman quarterback Scotty Gilkey, Jr. scored from a yard out to give his team a win over double overtime. The Panthers forced a fumble on the second play of the game and turned that into seven points just four plays later. A 32-yard fi eld goal in the second quarter extended the lead which they held until TSU booted a 51-yard fi eld goal late in regulation. EIU and TSU swapped fi eld goals in the fi rst overtime before Gilkey scored to end the game. Gilkey was named OVC Offensive Player of the Week after passing for 46 yards and rushing for a game-high 104 yards and two touchdowns in his second career start.
