Upon his return to the United States in 1919, he was bestowed the Congressional Medal of Honor. Following the war, York returned his home in Pall Mall, Tenn. In 1927, he established the Alvin C. York Institute after spending several years raising money for the school which opened as a private institution. That school was established, in part, to provide educational opportunities denied to the boys and girls of Fentress Country. In 1937, the Institute became a state special school after an appeal to the Tennessee State Legislature. The school, located in Jamestown, Tenn., is still in operation today. York died on Sept. 2, 1964 and the foundation which he helped establish in 1920 The Sergeant York Patriotic Foundation was dormant for many years. The Foundation was re-established by Lipscomb Davis, Jr. in 1992 and is currently run by Sgt. York s grandson Gerald (U.S. Army Colonel, Retired). York s papers are archived by Michael E. Birdwell, Ph.D., who is an associate professor of history at Tennessee Technological University, one of the four institutions that will compete for the yearly honor. After the completion of the football season, the Sergeant York Trophy is awarded to the institution with the best head-to-head record in the match-ups with their fellow Tennessee schools. In the event of a tie, the award is shared; however, the previous winner will retain the trophy if they are part of the tie. If the tie is between two other institutions, the trophy will go to the institution that has gone the most seasons without winning the trophy. The award is presented to the winning institution annually at the Pepsi Celebration of Champions which is hosted each spring by the Nashville Sports Council. The event was created in 1999 and salutes amateur and professional sports in Tennessee. 20 2017 Game Recaps tennessee State vs. Jackson State (Sept. 9, 2017) Game 1 Tennessee State 17, Georgia State 10 Quotes and Notes Junior Offensive Tackle Christian Morris - On beating an FBS Team First of all, this is a huge win. We re an FCS team, and we came out there and beat an FBS team. They were very talented, but we handled business. - On the offensive line The Offensive line played phenomenal tonight. We had a couple mishaps, but we played phenomenal. Senior Linebacker Chris Collins - On winning the opener It means a lot to the team. We felt like we wanted to start off the season strong. We feel like we played a great defensive game. Offensively, we played well too. I feel like we played a great game and now we just have to get ready for Jackson State. - On beating an FBS Team I don t think many people outside of us thought we would win, but it s good to prove people wrong. In our heart, we felt like we re the best, so we expect to do things like that. Coming into this game, I wanted to do it for the alumni and for our school. The alumni are what started this. Before the game, I tweeted, keep the tradition alive, and that s what we wanted to do. - On scoring a touchdown That was my first touchdown so I was really excited, but I have to give the credit to Sabree (Curtis) for getting us down there in the first place, and the line for blocking as well as they did. Treon (Harris) had a great drive, and it just played out for us. Freshman Safety Vincent Sellers - On getting the win It feels good. It s been a long camp, and we ve been working very hard. Coach (Garry) Fisher has been on us every single day and it got us better. I just want to thank God because it s a true blessing. - On winning his first college game I have my mom and dad here supporting me. They ve been waiting to see me play my first college game. It was a total team effort. (Laquarius) Cook taught me everything I know right now, and we re just going to keep pushing from here on. 21 2017 Game Recaps tennessee State at Jackson State (Sept. 9, 2017) Game 2 Tennessee State vs Jackson State Pregame Press Senior Offensive Lineman Thomas Burton - On memories of the Southern Heritage Classic I went every year with my grandma. I just liked to watch the game and the band. After the game the players used to throw glove sup to the stands. That was really cool. - On being a part of the Classic It s surreal. You go every year as a young kid. You are watching the game, and when you are playing football, it s something you want to do. You want that chance to go play college football. Now you get to be a part of it and play in front of your home crowd. That is always fun. Junior Dell Porter - On childhood memories of the classics I remember a lot of people coming together to celebrate the Southern Heritage Classic. It was a lot of fun and some great experiences. Game 2 Sept. 9, 2017 Liberty Bowl () Memphis, Tenn Final Tennessee State Jackson State Head Coach Rod Reed - On the opening win at Georgia State I was really proud of the way we went down there and competed this past week against Georgia State. The kids came out fired up. It was after a long hard camp, and we were able to go down there and play really disciplined. We didn t turn the ball over, and we were able to create some turnovers. I don t care who you play against. If you re able to be plus-four in the turnover margin, you give yourself a good opportunity to win. I thought our defense played stellar. I thought our offense moved the ball when they had to, and we were able to score a couple of times. I was a little disappointed in the kicking game. Lane (Clark) had been injured and that was his first game back kicking, but he ll be straight. We could have actually had a couple more points on the board. We missed some chip-shot field goals that he normally makes, and he ll correct that. I felt really good about the win. It was great for our conference. It was great for HBCU football. It was great for our university. - On the confidence level of the team We felt like going into the game, if we played well and cut our mistakes down we d give ourselves an opportunity to win the game in the fourth quarter. That s kind of how it played out. We never trailed in the game. We were able to start fast and get them on their heels a bit. When their starter (quarterback) exited the game that kind of limited what they could do offensively. It helped us to propel to the victory. Make no mistake about it. That s just one football game. We re about to head to Memphis for a rivalry game where you can throw the records out the window when these two teams play. We re 1-0. We re going to try to concentrate on being 1-0 again next week and hopefully we can keep this thing rolling. - On playing in the Southern Heritage Classic It s a huge classic for us. It s a money game for us. Obviously it helps both schools financially and Fred Jones does an outstanding job with the Southern Heritage Classic every year. We just enjoy playing in it. The rivalry goes back when you talk about Jackson State and Tennessee State, and it s just a huge game for us. It s a great atmosphere. The city of Memphis is wonderful, so we re just excited to play in it. - On the importance of playing in Memphis Same with Atlanta. We recruit a lot in Atlanta, but also being in Memphis, it is a huge recruiting area for us. We ve got about five or six starters on our football team that are from the city of Memphis. They re excited to go home. A couple of our freshmen from last year are from Memphis, so it is a huge recruiting area for us, and we like to get our product on the field down in Memphis. Senior Wide Receiver Patrick Smith - On memories of the Southern Heritage Classic It was always fun going to the Southern Heritage Classic. Even if you weren t going to the game, you would go for the tailgating. It is always a good time at the Southern Heritage Classic. I am very excited to playing this game. - On the contest as a kid I really never rooted for a team. I really did not know much about either team. Most of the time I was outside tailgating, but I did come to watch the bands. - On playing in Memphis My family does not get to come to all my games. With the game right there at home, it will be easy for them to come. So it is very special and means a lot to me. I get a chance to go out there and show what I can do to the world and my people, makes it a very emotional game for me. - On the offense We have to keep moving forward. We have to execute our assignments. We left a lot of points on the field last week, but it was just those first game jitters. We need to get those out, but I believe we will be more explosive this week on offense. - On playing in the Southern Heritage Classic We need to keep the legacy going on. As a kid, Tennessee State won a lot of the games, so we have to stay humble and keep the legacy alive. - On being ranked We have to continue to prepare like we are 0-1. Earl Harrison - On the Southern Heritage Classic It is funny. I used to go to this game every year when I was young. I never thought I would get a scholarship. But look, I am now at TSU and playing football. - On playing in the Southern Heritage The excitement is unbelievable. - On the meaning of playing in Memphis There are a lot of emotions. I know when I was a kid I wanted to be that person. Now I have kids watching me, I just want to put on a good show. - On playing this weekend after sitting out at Georgia State I just want to add more. Sabree (Curtis) and Seth (Rowland) did their part last week. I just want to add to it and help us win. Junior Offensive Lineman Christian Morris - On the Southern Heritage Classic It is a huge game. Everybody comes out. It is a big tradition in Memphis. It is vital that I play in this game and be a part of history. - On the offensive lines play and progression There is always room for improvement. We need to drive them off the line a little more and we can always work on our pass game a little more. As a whole, the offensive line, we are working hard every day. #BigBlueRising
