Upon his return to the United States in 1919, he was bestowed the Congressional Medal of Honor. Following the war, York returned his home in Pall Mall, Tenn. In 1927, he established the Alvin C. York Institute after spending several years raising money for the school which opened as a private institution. That school was established, in part, to provide educational opportunities denied to the boys and girls of Fentress Country. In 1937, the Institute became a state special school after an appeal to the Tennessee State Legislature. The school, located in Jamestown, Tenn., is still in operation today. York died on Sept. 2, 1964 and the foundation which he helped establish in 1920 The Sergeant York Patriotic Foundation was dormant for many years. The Foundation was re-established by Lipscomb Davis, Jr. in 1992 and is currently run by Sgt. York s grandson Gerald (U.S. Army Colonel, Retired). York s papers are archived by Michael E. Birdwell, Ph.D., who is an associate professor of history at Tennessee Technological University, one of the four institutions that will compete for the yearly honor. After the completion of the football season, the Sergeant York Trophy is awarded to the institution with the best head-to-head record in the match-ups with their fellow Tennessee schools. In the event of a tie, the award is shared; however, the previous winner will retain the trophy if they are part of the tie. If the tie is between two other institutions, the trophy will go to the institution that has gone the most seasons without winning the trophy. The award is presented to the winning institution annually at the Pepsi Celebration of Champions which is hosted each spring by the Nashville Sports Council. The event was created in 1999 and salutes amateur and professional sports in Tennessee. 20 2018 Game Recaps tennessee State at Austin Peay (Oct. 6, 2018) Game 1 Tennessee State 34, Bethune-Cookman 3 Quotes and Notes QUARTERBACK MICHEAL HUGHES (on being 1-0) It s very important. That s how you want to start the season off. I m very excited. A lot of guys put in a lot of hard work for this moment. It s very exciting to start the season off 1-0. (on chemistry with Chris Rowland) Chris and I worked all summer together. He s a hard-working guys, and he gets open when he needs to, so he did a good job." (on putting up 525 yards of total offense) That says we re explosive. We re in no huddle this year, so it gives us more opportunities - more snaps. It wasn t a surprise for me. It s great. LINEBACKER JAMES GREEN (on the success of the defense) Tonight s success on the defensive side was great. Even though they had too many yards for us to be comfortable, we played a good game. We re going to continue to get better. (on the mentality on third down) Put a foot on their neck. We weren t going to let them come back. We were going to continue to play defense and be great. That s how we re going to play. We have to have some juice. Bethune-Cookman (0-1) vs. Tennessee State (1-0) Date: Sep 01, 2018 Site: Nashville, Tenn. Stadium: Nissan Stadium Attendance: (on the play of the newcomers) We set the tempo for the season, and we re going to keep getting better week-by-week. We re one defense. We re going to continue helping each other. SEFETY LAQUARIUS COOK (on winning the opening game) That s big. We came out and played strong. First game so guys had to get the jitters out. We ve got a lot of stuff we can learn from, but it s good to get the win. (on winning the John Merritt Classic as a senior) It means a lot. I haven t lost a John Merritt Classic since I ve been here. I m proud to say that. (on the strong play of the defense) That s Coach (Garry) Fischer and the guys believing in what we do. We still have work to do. It was alright, but we re trying to be number one in the nation, so we have work to do. OFFENSIVE LINEMAN ANTHONY GETER (on the play of the offensive line) I think the offensive line did a great job of pass protecting and run blocking. We re just doing what Coach E taught us all year. All camp, really, just dominate up front. (on switching quarterbacks) Sometimes we had issues with getting calls off and getting set, but it s really no big deal. Both of them played well. NOTES Weather at kickoff was 82 degrees and mostly sunny... Game time was delayed 24 minutes due to lightning during pregame... Official start time was 6:24 p.m... Captains for TSU were Micheal Hughes, Demry Croft, Thomas Burton, Dell Porter and LaQuarius Cook... TSU won the coin toss and deferred the opening kickoff... 21 2018 Game Recaps tennessee State at Austin Peay (Oct. 6, 2018) Game 2 Tennessee State vs. Jackson State - Cancelled Quotes and Notes DEFENSIVE LINEMAN DANTE FERGUSON, JR. (on the Southern Heritage Classic game getting cancelled) We always go through our pregame progressions, and we re always ready to go out and play on Saturdays, so just not to play was kind of disappointing. I know all of us wanted to play and get after Jackson State, but it s just one of those things. It happens sometimes. We wish it didn t happen, but it s in the past now and we have to look forward to our week coming up. OFFENSIVE LINEMAN THOMAS BURTON (on not playing on Saturday in Memphis due to weather) It sucks. It s my last time going home (to Memphis). I wish I could have played. It was tough. Game 2 Sept. 8, 2018 Liberty Bowl () Memphis, Tenn. - Cancelled Final Jackson State Tennessee State RUNNING BACK TE KENDRICK ROBERSON (on the process leading up to the Southern Heritage Classic game) We got warmed up a couple times for a game that I d never been in, the Southern Heritage Classic, which everyone says is a big game. 22 2018 Game Recaps tennessee State at Austin Peay (Oct. 6, 2018) Game 3 Tennessee State at Hampton - Cancelled Preview OFFENSIVE LINEMAN LACHAVIOUS SIMMONS (on looking ahead to the Hampton game) We just need to make sure we stay focused and be good in our preparation. With the long flight and all that, we just have to be focused. That s the main key. (on what he sees from Hampton on film) They re a good squad. As long as we come out and play our game, I think we ll be successful. WIDE RECEIVER STEVEN NEWBOLD (on facing Hampton) I m looking forward to this game. Last week was going to be a big game for us the Southern Heritage Classic there were a lot of fans out there waiting for the show. It was sad that the weather affected the game. I see right now from the energy on the team that everybody s ready this week. Everybody s ready to go out there and put out that work that we ve been putting in since last week. We re looking really good so far. Game 3 Sept. 15, 2018 Armstrong Stadium () Hampton, Va Final Tennessee State Hampton OFFENSIVE LINEMAN JUSTIN BROOKS (on facing Hampton) I m ready to play. 23 2018 Game Recaps tennessee State at Austin Peay (Oct. 6, 2018) Game 4 Tennessee State at Eastern Illinois Quotes and Notes WIDE RECEIVER TREON HARRIS (on being 1-0 in the OVC ) It was great because we missed some games, so we had to come out and win. We have to win out. (on his touchdown pass) We practiced that all week and we felt like that would be open. In the game, it came wide open and Chris (Rowland) got into the end zone for us. (on contributing to the offense) Like I said in the spring, I feel like I m an athlete. I feel like I ll do anything to help the team. If I have to block, I ll go block. The touchdown catch was big. It helped change momentum. DEFENSIVE TACKLE JEREMIAH CAINE (on making adjustments against Eastern Illinois) We just had to get good field position and calm down and play our game. We were a little nervous because we haven t played in a couple weeks. We just had to get rid of all the nerves and play ball. Coach was calling the right calls, we just had to execute. So that is what we did in the second half. We just came out and executed. But the fact that we kept pushing shows me just how good of a team we can actually be. We have a lot to work on, but I am just glad we had a chance to come back and get this victory (on coming back after surrendering a couple big plays for touchdowns) Big plays are going to happen. You just need to know how to overcome adversity. We just came together as a team and made something special. RUNNING BACK TE KENDRICK ROBERSON (on being used as a rusher and a receiver) Coming into the game, coach said the like to drop their linebackers back so be prepared to catch some balls in the flats. So I prepared myself all week to be ready to catch some balls. (on turnovers) We had not played for two whole weeks, we missed two whole games. We were kind of rusty and we needed to get into the groove of a real game, making real tackles and getting hit. I think we were ready in the second half. 24 2018 Game Recaps tennessee State at Austin Peay (Oct. 6, 2018) Game 5 Tennessee State 27, Vanderbilt 31 Quotes and Notes TENNESSEE STATE HEAD COACH ROD REED (on the fight shown from his team) I m really proud of that team over there in that locker room right there. Once again they showed resilience, they showed toughness, and they showed a never quit attitude. We came out in the second half, and they scored and we were able to bounce back and come back and do some things. I was really proud of our football team. We did what we needed to do. We said we wanted to keep the game close coming into the fourth quarter and give ourselves the opportunity to win, and that s exactly what we did. (on the toughness his squad displayed) Our kids won t quit. You see it in practice every day We scratch and fight, and these kids have really, really earned the right to be a really good football team. I think that this is another stepping stone in this program. For us we just have to continue to build on it and carry this back over into conference play. (on missed opportunities) To be able to move the ball up and down the field the way we did, and if you go back and really think about it we missed a field goal and an extra point. There s four points right there. It could ve been a lot different story. Stadium: Vanderbilt Stadium Attendance: RUNNING BACK DEMARCO CORBIN (on scoring in three-consecutive games) It s been a good feeling. For the past few years in college football, this has been my job. When we get near the goal line, it s time to go. I think I ve shown (the coaching staff) that they can trust me, and hopefully I can continue to show them that. (on playing a close game with an SEC opponent) To me, that shows me this is a special teams. It shows we can do some big things if we all believe. OFFENSIVE LINEMAN CHIDI OKEKE (on the offense moving the ball) We do what we have to do all week. We watched Vanderbilt s defense, and we believed we could match up with them and actually beat them. We kept what we were doing in practice and did it in the game. (on if the game gives him confidence) It gives me confidence moving forward because if we can play this way against OVC teams, it will be tough for them to match up with us. DEFENSIVE BACK LAQUARIUS COOK (on the defense getting take aways) It s pretty cool that we could do that against an SEC opponent, but we still came out trying to be the best we can be and give them nothing. (on building confidence from the game) It s alright to play a close game, but we came here to win. We didn t come here to play a close game. 25 2018 Game Recaps tennessee State at Austin Peay (Oct. 6, 2018) Game 6 Tennessee State at Austin Peay Quotes OFFENSIVE LINEMAN THOMAS BURTON (on facing Austin Peay) As long as we lock in mentally and focus on what we need to focus on, I think we can have a good game. (on the prospect of being 2-0 in OVC play) We want to win every game, but especially in conference play. That would be big for us, especially since we re about to hit a conference stretch. Staying on top is very important for us. KICKER ANTONIO ZITA (on returning to OVC play to face Austin Peay) It s a big game since it s conference play. Last year, special teams was big in this game. If we do what we did against Eastern Illinois in the second half, then we ll be fine. Game 6 Oct. 6, 2018 Fortera Stadium () Clarksville, Tenn Final Tennessee State Austin Peay TSU HEAD COACH ROD REED (on the support for Christion Abercrombie) I d like to say thank you for all of the outpouring of support by all the coaches around the Ohio Valley Conference and around the nation. We ve gotten a lot of prayers, a lot of support, a lot of phone calls, a lot of text messages from everybody. It s been phenomenal with the support you ve given us here at Tennessee State and me personally. I d like to thank everyone from the bottom of my heart for the continued prayers for Christion and his family. (on Christion Abercrombie) He s a phenomenal guy off the field, first of all. His parents have done a tremendous job of raising him. He has a huge smile and warm heart. He s a heck of a football player. He s just a wonderful kid, and my heart goes out to him. (on TSU s performance at Vanderbilt) We went over and I thought our kids played a heck of a game over at Vanderbilt. I thought we gave ourselves an opportunity in the fourth quarter to win. When you play games like that, that s all you can ask for. We thought we had it going and we gave up a big play late in the fourth quarter. Our offense drove it down again, and then we stalled on the 13 yard line, but our kids played their butts off in spite of a tragic situation going into the half. Our kids maintained focus and gave ourselves an opportunity to win. AUSTIN PEAY HEAD COACH WILL HEALY (on facing TSU) I think we ve won one out of the last 15 (matchups), so I don t know if you can really call it a rivalry. I think it s a great matchup obviously with the proximity. I wish all of us played all the Tennessee FCS schools. We know they re a really good football team. That s why we re excited about the game. I think their talent level is exceptional. It s a game that the last two years for us has been really close. We were very fortunate to win a year ago. (on Christion Abercrombie) Rod (Reed) has been a guy that s been really good to me since I ve been in this league. If I ve needed advice, I ve been able to call him and talk to him about things. He s been extremely hospitable, and now your heart goes out to that program and that staff and those players because of what they re going through. We ve been praying (Christion Abercrombie). I think there s a lot more to life than football, and I think this week is one of those that they re living through right now. Everybody in that university and that program understands that loud and clear right now. I know their hearts will be heavy this week. Our hearts will be heavy this week. I m praying for him. I know Rod always creates and preaches that culture. I think they re living it out now with the support that they re showing for their teammate. Our thoughts and prayers are with them. WIDE RECEIVER STEVEN NEWBOLD (on building confidence from last week s game at Vanderbilt) We played a great game on Saturday from the start to the finish. The confidence that it brings in for the OVC is just great. Now we see what type of team we have and that the leadership that s been going on is working. (on getting into a rhythm with the offense) It was slow in the first two games. I just feel like that because I made a comment about me being a good receiver, and God was just showing me a way to humble myself. That s all it was. It was a humbling experience. (on TSU s quarterbacks) It was the game flow. Demry (Croft) had it going, and I didn t see a reason at that point to do anything different. We talked about it, and we just decided to leave Demry in. Mike (Hughes) is a big part of this football team and he s going to be a big part of our offense the rest of the year. (on TSU s line play versus Vanderbilt) I thought we played well up front. I was a little concerned with our defensive line. We had two of our starting defensive linemen out for that game, and some guys came in and did a really credible job in there. We moved them around a little bit. We had to bob and weave a little bit in there, but I thought our linebackers played downhill. (on the challenges TSU presents) Obviously, we ve seen (Micheal) Hughes plenty of times. We faced off against him last year. I think the kid they ve got playing (Demry Croft) is pretty good. He s got a really strong arm. He s accurate. He extends plays. We ve seen Hughes, so we re a little more familiar with him. He s more of the pocket guy with a big arm. I think either one can be successful, and you have to prepare for both. They re dynamic on offense. Every play, they can make a big play. This is a lot like Jacksonville State last week where it s the first time they ve played back-to-back weeks. I m sure they re excited to be in a groove a little bit and get some things going. I think both quarterbacks are really good and can beat you, so we have to prepare for both. #BigBlueRising
