The award is only the second traveling trophy that involves more than two teams in college sports; the other is the Commander in Chief s Trophy which has been contested between Air Force, Army and Navy annually since In a close race, Tennessee State and Austin Peay shared the inaugural award, finishing with identical 2-1 records in Tennessee State took the trophy home thanks to a one-point victory in overtime over the Governors; that game was decided by a block extra point by NFL First Round Draft Pick Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. The Tigers repeated as champions in 2008, winning all three of its Sgt. York games. The award is named in honor of Alvin C. York, the most noted Soldier of World War I. As a corporal in the 2 nd battalion, 328 th Infantry, in the Battle of the Meuse River-Argonne (Oct. 8, 1918), York and seven other soldiers captured 132 prisoners, was promoted to sergeant and received the Distinguished Service Cross, the French Croix de Guerre, the French Legion of Honor, the Croce di Guerra of Italy and the War Medal of Montenegro. Upon his return to the United States in 1919, he was bestowed the Congressional Medal of Honor. Following the war, York returned his home in Pall Mall, Tenn. In 1927, he established the Alvin C. York Institute after spending several years raising money for the school which opened as a private institution. That school was established, in part, to provide educational opportunities denied to the boys and girls of Fentress Country. In 1937, the Institute became a state special school after an appeal to the Tennessee State Legislature. The school, located in Jamestown, Tenn., is still in operation today. York died on Sept. 2, 1964 and the foundation which he helped establish in 1920 The Sergeant York Patriotic Foundation was dormant for many years. The Foundation was re-established by Lipscomb Davis, Jr. in 1992 and is currently run by Sgt. York s grandson Gerald (U.S. Army Colonel, Retired). York s papers are archived by Michael E. Birdwell, Ph.D., who is an associate professor of history at Tennessee Technological University, one of the four institutions that will compete for the yearly honor. After the completion of the football season, the Sergeant York Trophy is awarded to the institution with the best head-to-head record in the match-ups with their fellow Tennessee schools. In the event of a tie, the award is shared; however, the previous winner will retain the trophy if they are part of the tie. If the tie is between two other institutions, the trophy will go to the institution that has gone the most seasons without winning the trophy. The award is presented to the winning institution annually at the Pepsi Celebration of Champions which is hosted each spring by the Nashville Sports Council. The event was created in 1999 and salutes amateur and professional sports in Tennessee. Reed coached six players to All-OVC Teams including safety Eugene Clifford who also was a Sports Network, Phil Steele and BOXTOROW All-American. The Tigers increased their win total in their second season under Reed and finished the 2011 season on a hot streak, winning four of their last six games. The stretch included a, 42-40, upset win at No. 19 ranked Tennessee Tech on Oct. 15. Reed produced even more All-OVC players in year two, as seven made postseason squads. Two more defenders garnered All-American honors under Reed s tutelage in linebacker Rico Council and Joseph Wylie. He also helped Lamar Divens and Sidney Tarver ink NFL contracts. TSU won its first HBCU National Championship since 1982 and the team s shutout win over Butler in the first round of the playoffs was the first victory for the OVC in postseason play in nearly 30 years. A school record 12 Tigers were chosen to the league s all-conference teams at season s end and Kadeem Edwards (143rd) and Demetrius Rhaney (250th) were selected in the NFL Draft. 20 2017 Game Recaps Tennessee State at Georgia State (Aug. 31, 2017) Game 1 Tennessee State at Georgia State Pregame Quotes Senior Linebacker Chris Collins - On what he expects of the team in 2017 I expect us to play at a high level. I feel like we had a real good offseason, so I expect us to be at our best. There will be a lot of emotions and we need to get to this first game, because everybody is tired of practicing against each other. I expect us to come out and fly around, as well as have fun. - On staying grounded We have had game like simulations throughout practice, so if we treat practice like a game then hopefully it will work itself out. We just have to have the play the next play mentality. - On playing in his home state of Georgia This game is just as important as every other game, but it is the first one, the next one. So I feel like we just have to stay focused. I cannot get so caught up in the fact that it is home, that I lose focus. I just need to execute, but I am excited that I get to play in front of my family. I am excited that this will be the first time I play in Georgia since the State Championship my senior year. Game 1 Aug. 31, 2017 Georgia State Stadium () Atlanta, Ga Final Tennessee State Georgia State Redshirt Sophomore Defensive Back Shakur Jackson - On playing in Atlanta It is going to be amazing. All of my family and friends are going to be there. I have been excited the whole offseason. The buildup has been crazy. It is the first game of the season, so we are already focused on the game, but since it is in my home state makes it more important. I just have to embrace the experience and play my heart out. - On facing off against an opponent We can finally tackle. We have been in thud most of the time, so it is going to be fun getting to hit someone. I am looking forward to my first hit of the season. It is going to be fun. - On the expectations of the defense this season I am looking forward to us being a dominant defense. But we need to progress throughout the season. Right now we are still improving and trying to get better, but I am looking for us to be consistent and dominant. We need to be a whole different defense than we were last year. Sophomore Running Back Sabree Curtis - On making an impact I am very excited. Last year, I made a couple of plays, but not as many as I wanted to make. This year I want to be able to make more plays and do things that will help us win. I am just excited to get started. - On what the team needs to do to be more successful We just need to be locked in, watch more film, know our assignments and then execute. - On playing in Georgia It will be exciting to play in Atlanta. I haven t played there since my final high school game. A lot of my family and friends will be there and excited to see me play. It will be an interesting experience. Redshirt-Freshman Tight End Aaron Cauthen - On playing in his home state I am excited. We are going down to my home town of Atlanta. I get to play in front of my family and friends. I am really looking forward to that Thursday night game. - On playing his first collegiate game It is going to be fun. I haven t played since my senior year of high school. Going against these guys did make me better, but actually facing somebody besides my teammates is what has me excited. I think I m ready. - On what needs to be done in the final days of preparation We just need to keep the focus. There is a lot of hype behind this game, being the season opener and an FBS opponent. We just need to stay focused and I believe we ll be alright. Tennessee State University Football

21 2016 Game Recaps Tennessee State at Georgia State (Aug. 31, 2017) Game 1 Tennessee State 44, Arkansas-Pine Bluff 0 Quotes and Notes TSU Wide Receiver Patrick Smith It s a statement game. It lets every team know that we re coming. This year s Tennessee State program is going to score a lot of points, and we re going to shut people out. We re prepared for anyone. - On scoring 44 points In the beginning, some of the things we usually run, we were a little bit slow on them. Our run game has gotten better and passing-wise, I feel like we can be a really big threat in this conference, against anybody we play. - On what worked for the offense Defensive MVP Ebo Ogundeko It was a great game. The whole camp, we worked hard just to do this. It s not really about the defense, it s more about the whole team. We complimented each other well. The coaches, they prepared us for this. I feel like we ve got a lot of talent on this defense and we didn t play up to our abilities. - On the play of the defense That wasn t really a factor tonight. I think it was more their big plays that hurt us. Big chunk plays and stuff like that. I don t think tempo was a factor. - On Murray State s up-tempo offense TSU Defensive Back Terrell Bonds We didn t play to the level that we wanted to play. We gave up too many points. We gave up points fast, but the offense kept us in the game because they kept scoring. We had a chance to win it at the end and we just didn t come through. I would put this game on the defense. - On the defense Their offense has always been like that. They were snapping the ball like every 15 seconds. We had trouble getting lined up and they exploited the defense. They made big plays and that s on us. He brought me through it and only He can bring you through it in every aspect of the way. All I can say is, I love this team. We fought together and stuck together. - On the feeling of winning I knew that we had to take care of the ball. We ve still got a lot of guys outside who can make plays. The way their defense set up, I saw pre-snap reads that we could make plays. Those guys did a great job. On the last play, give credit to Steven Newbold just making a play. - On the last drive Wide Receiver Steven Newbold Honestly, the confidence is always there. We know the offense has a lot of talent. On the final drive, we just executed. We did it together as a family and us playing our roles as a family. We continued to focus on what we had to do. Coach Reed talks about it all the time, and it starts the beginning of the week until game day. - On getting back to winning After Austin Peay s last drive, Steven (Newbold) said Ebo, big bro, I ve got you. I didn t really take it into consideration about what he said until after he scored the touchdown. We didn t have much time on the clock, but I had a lot of confidence in our offense. That was just unbelievable. - On the offense s last drive Defensive End Dell Porter For us, we re getting back on track. We hate to lose, but we love to win. We re getting back on track and we re winning. We just have to make it consistent and keep doing it. - On getting back to winning To be honest, with all my heart, I have all the confidence in the world that our offense is going to do what they have to do.
