Garcia Notes * This is the 29th meeting between Tennessee State and Murray State * Murray State leads the series * The Racers hold a 10-7 advantage in Murray, Ky. * Tennessee State last victory over the Racers came at Murray, 48-33, in 2014 Last Meeting * Despite 555 yards of total offense, Tennessee State football team could not hold off Murray State s second half surge in a road defeat. * Ronald Butler set career highs for passing yards (329) and rushing yards (109). * The Tigers held a halftime lead over MSU, before the Racers outscored TSU in the second half. * LaQuarius Cook tallied 11 total tackles to pace the defense. * TSU drove 64 yards in 14 plays on the game s opening drive, setting up a 31-yard field goal by Lane Clark. * MSU used two scores to take a 14-3 after one quarter of play. * Patrick Smith picked up his first touchdown of the day on a 20-yard pass from Butler to bring the Big Blue back within four at * Trailing 17-10, Butler found Sabree Curtis for a 16 yards touchdown. * The Tigers closed out the half with Clark s second of his three field goals, a 25 yarder as time expired. * MSU scored on their first two possessions to take a lead, prior to a 20 yard field goal by Clark. * Murray State needed just 13 seconds to get back on the scoreboard on a 75-yard pass play. * Butler found Smith for a touchdown to bring the Tigers to within nine, but could not get any closer. Just Keep Rowland * Chris Rowland is off to a fast start, hauling in 26 passes for 415 yards and four touchdowns. * The junior has surpassed his total from his first two seasons of 414 yards. * Rowland is one reception short of his freshman total and two under his sophomore total. * The receiver set career marks at Austin Peay with 11 receptions, 179 yards and three touchdowns. * Rowland was able to catch a touchdown pass at Eastern Illinois before exiting the contest in the third quarter. * The injury kept Rowland out of the matchup at Vanderbilt. * The wideouts only other score came in the final game of the 2017 season at Jacksonville State. 3 Game Notes tennessee State at Murray State (Oct. 13, 2018) Rod Reed s Record Breakdown * It marked the first time the Big Blue went back-to-back weeks of over 500 yards since the final two games in * The offense fell 11 yards short of starting a new streak by totaling 489 yards at Austin Peay. * TSU totaled 525 yards against Bethune-Cookman and put up 544 yards at Eastern Illinois after a two week break, to start the season. * The Tigers rank third in the Ohio Valley Conference and 13th in the nation in total offense, averaging yards per game. A Hiccup to a Perfect Start * Antonio Zita started the season a perfect 5-for-5 on field goal attempts and 6-for-6 on extra points. * The freshman had his streak come to an end as he missed a field goal attempt from 46 yards at Vanderbilt and missed one of his four extra point attempts. * The kicker rebounded at Austin Peay with a 2-for-2 field goal and 4-for-4 extra point performance. * Zita was one of 16 kickers who was perfect on the season and one of two in the Ohio Valley Conference heading into week five. * The first-year has scored double digits in three of his first four games, scoring 10 points against Bethune-Cookman and at Austin Peay, while finishing 11 at Eastern Illinois. * The 11 points at EIU tied Zita for seventh best in a single game for a kicker at Tennessee State. * Zita is ranked 14th in the nation with an.875 field goal percentage and seventh with 1.75 field goals per game. Last Line of Defense * LaQuarius Cook collected eight tackles at Austin Peay to bring his career total to 211. * The mark jumps Cook into the TSU Career Tackles Top 10 list. * The redshirt-senior passed Elliot Pilton who collected 210 stops from * At Vanderbilt, Cook was second on the team with eight tackles. * Earlier this season, Cook finished with four stops at Eastern Illinois. * The safety made six stops in the opener versus Bethune-Cookman, second to Dajour Nesbeth and Blair Edwards, each with seven. * Cook finished second on the team in tackles each of his first three seasons. * Cook posted 58 stops as a freshman, 66 as a sophomore and 61 during his junior season. * The senior finished second only to departed linebacker Chris Collins, who topped the Tiger defense over the last three years. Tennessee State Air Defense Unit * The defensive backfield returns as arguably one of the biggest strengths for the Tigers in * The unit was the backbone to the seventh ranked defense in the country a season ago and ranked second in pass defense. * The Tigers allowed just yards per game trough the air. * TSU surrendered 178 yards through the air against Bethune-Cookman, but has been touched for 393 yards at Eastern Illinois and 297 at Vanderbilt. * The defense held Austin Peay to seven completions and 189 yards through the air. * LaQuarius Cook is in his final season in blue as a three-year starter and one of the top tacklers over the past three seasons. * Cook recorded the first turnover for the Tigers in 2018 with a first quarter interception. * Vincent Sellers finished 15th in the STATS FCS Jerry Rice Award for the top freshman player in the nation and was a HERO Sports FCS Freshman All-America Team Honorable Mention member. * Sellers earned a spot on the All-OVC Second Team and the OVC All-Newcomer squad after posting 49 tackles, 36 solo, 2.0 for loss, two interceptions, five pass breakups, a safety and a blocked punt. * Junior cornerback Dajour Nesbeth earned a spot on the 2018 Preseason Ohio Valley Conference Team after posting two interceptions, nine breakups and 11 pass deflections. * Nesbeth registered his first career pick-six in the fourth quarter of the 2018 opener against Bethune-Cookman and intercepted a pass in the end zone and returned it 65 yards at Vanderbilt. * Neiman Armstrong and Nick Harper, Jr. will battle to replace Terrell Bonds, who ended his TSU career with 10 interceptions. * Armstrong collected 18 tackles, a sack, two breakups and two pass deflections in * Harper sat out last season due to NCAA transfer rules, after spending his freshman season at Missouri State * Harper led the Tigers with five solo tackles in the 2018 John Merritt Classic against Bethune-Cookman. It's A Family Affair * This years squad boasts four sets of brothers and two sets of cousins. * Junior Jamal Jelks sports the most interesting set of lineage as he is cousins with three teammates. * Jelks is cousins with senior linebacker Blair Edwards, as well as with the Johnson brothers; Edwards and the Johnson's are not related. * The Johnson's are a brother tandem from Huntsville, Ala. * DeVon is a senior wideout, while Desmond is a redshirt sophomore on the defensive unit. * Juniors Seth and Chris Rowland attended Ravenwood High School in Brentwood, Tenn. * Seth, who is a year older, attended a prep school before TSU. * Sophomore linebacker James Green welcomes his younger brother Josh, who is a freshman cornerback competing for playing time. * Redshirt freshman Adrian Sims enters his second season with the Tigers, while his older brother, Andre, joined the coaching staff as an offensive intern. In the Classroom * The Tigers saw 14 Tigers walk across the stage during the 2017 Fall and 2018 Spring Commencements. 9 Coaches tennessee State at Murray State (Oct. 13, 2018) Rod Reed Head Coach 9th Season Overall Record: OVC Record: Rod Reed enters his eighth season at the helm of the Tennessee State football program after being named head coach on December 18, He served as the associate head coach and defensive coordinator during the 2009 season. Reed experienced immediate success as a head coach, leading the Tigers to a win in his debut game, 27-14, over Alabama A&M on Sept. 4, 2010 in the John Merritt Classic. He also broke an eight-game losing streak to Florida A&M, downing the Rattlers, 29-18, in the Atlanta Classic. Reed coached six players to All-OVC Teams including safety Eugene Clifford who also was a Sports Network, Phil Steele and BOXTOROW All-American. The Tigers increased their win total in their second season under Reed and finished the 2011 season on a hot streak, winning four of their last six games. The stretch included a, 42-40, upset win at No. 19 ranked Tennessee Tech on Oct. 15. Reed produced even more All-OVC players in year two, as seven made postseason squads. Two more defenders garnered All-American honors under Reed s tutelage in linebacker Rico Council and Joseph Wylie. He also helped Lamar Divens and Sidney Tarver ink NFL contracts. The Big Blue continued its success in 2012 by rattling off seven straight victories to open the season. The Tigers finished the year with an 8-3 record, its best since The performance earned TSU HBCU Program of the Year honors by HBCU Huddle. Several players earned postseason accolades including running back Trabis Ward who was named to the College Sports All-American Team after running for 1,460 yards and 15 touchdowns. Three more Tigers were Sheridan All-Americans including Sherman Carter who signed an NFL deal with fellow offensive lineman Rogers Gaines following suit. Reed turned in his finest season to date in 2013, as the Tigers finished 10-4 and won a FCS Playoff Game for the first time since It capped an impressive run in which Reed improved his club s win total by at least two in each of his first four campaigns. TSU won its first HBCU National Championship since 1982 and the team s shutout win over Butler in the first round of the playoffs was the first victory for the OVC in postseason play in nearly 30 years. A school record 12 Tigers were chosen to the league s all-conference teams at season s end and Kadeem Edwards (143rd) and Demetrius Rhaney (250th) were selected in the NFL Draft. In 2014, Reed s defense ranked inside the top-10 for the third BOOTH straight season. Middle linebacker Nick Thrasher tallied 128 stops on the season, which was sixth-most in a single-season in school history and the highest total for a Tiger since Thrasher also moved up to second-place in tackles in the TSU record book over the course of the season, finishing with 358. Quarterback Mike German threw for 2,846 yards on the year, helping him break the 34 year old school-mark with 8,664 career yards. After breaking a streak of three consecutive non-losing seasons in 2015, the Tigers bounced back to finish 7-4 in TSU reemerged as one of the top teams in the OVC under Reed with nine all-conference players and six All-Americans. The offense led the OVC in points scored and finished second in total offense. Cornerback Ezra Robinson and offensive lineman Jessamen Dunker both earned First Team All-OVC selections, All-American status and were invited to play in the Reese s Senior Bowl. The duo also participated in the NFL combine and signed free agent contracts. Reed has coached a total of 28 All-Americans and 62 All-OVC Players in his seven seasons as a head coach and has staked a record. He began coaching at TSU in 2003 and served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. At the conclusion of the season in which Reed returned to the TSU sideline, the Tigers led the OVC in total defense for the first time in school history. The defense accomplished the same feat in 2008 finishing at the top of the OVC in total defense. A keen recruiter as an assistant, Reed was responsible for bringing several notable key players into the TSU program. Reed is noted for recruiting Javarris Williams (2009 seven-round draft pick, Kansas City Chiefs), Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie (2008 first-round draft pick, Arizona Cardinals), Shaun Richardson, Lamar Divens (Baltimore Ravens, 2008) and Cornelius Lewis. He has also coached All-America and professional player, Jamar Landrom (Jacksonville Jaguars). Reed was a four-year letter winner for the TSU Tigers from He capped off his career by being named Sheridan All-America his senior season. He set the Tiger record for career tackles from his linebacker slot and in 1987, he set the single season record for tackles with 197. He helped lead the Tigers to the second round of the 1986 Division I-AA playoffs and was selected as Defensive MVP in 1987 and Following completion of his bachelor s degree, Reed entered the coaching profession. He held positions at Prairie View A&M (Linebackers, 2001), Bethune-Cookman University (Linebackers, 92-95), and Seabreeze High School (DC, 96-00) in Daytona Beach, Fla. Within those positions he coached five first-team all-conference linebackers and a pair of All-Americans. Before coming to TSU, Reed previously coached at East Texas Baptist College (00-03) in his hometown of Marshall, Texas. He served as defensive coordinator for East Texas Baptist, which launched its football program during the 2000 season. The 2002 Texas Baptist defense ranked second in their conference in scoring defense and third in rushing defense. The team did not allow points in either the first or third periods through the first eight games in Reed is the son of Robert Reed, Jr., an All-America offensive guard for the Tigers in 1963 and 1964 who later played professionally for the Washington Redskins. York Trophy tennessee State at Murray State (Oct. 13, 2018) In July 2007, the Nashville Sports Council and the Ohio Valley Conference announced the creation of the Sergeant York Trophy which goes to the winner of the quadrangular season football series between the four Ohio Valley Conference schools located in the state of Tennessee Austin Peay State University, University of Tennessee at Martin, Tennessee State University and Tennessee Technological University. The award is only the second traveling trophy that involves more than two teams in college sports; the other is the Commander in Chief s Trophy which has been contested between Air Force, Army and Navy annually since In a close race, Tennessee State and Austin Peay shared the inaugural award, finishing with identical 2-1 records in Tennessee State took the trophy home thanks to a one-point victory in overtime over the Governors; that game was decided by a block extra point by NFL First Round Draft Pick Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. The Tigers repeated as champions in 2008, winning all three of its Sgt. York games. The award is named in honor of Alvin C. York, the most noted Soldier of World War I. As a corporal in the 2 nd battalion, 328 th Infantry, in the Battle of the Meuse River-Argonne (Oct. 8, 1918), York and seven other soldiers captured 132 prisoners, was promoted to sergeant and received the Distinguished Service Cross, the French Croix de Guerre, the French Legion of Honor, the Croce di Guerra of Italy and the War Medal of Montenegro. In 1927, he established the Alvin C. York Institute after spending several years raising money for the school which opened as a private institution. That school was established, in part, to provide educational opportunities denied to the boys and girls of Fentress Country. In 1937, the Institute became a state special school after an appeal to the Tennessee State Legislature. The school, located in Jamestown, Tenn., is still in operation today. York died on Sept. 2, 1964 and the foundation which he helped establish in 1920 The Sergeant York Patriotic Foundation was dormant for many years. The Foundation was re-established by Lipscomb Davis, Jr. in 1992 and is currently run by Sgt. York s grandson Gerald (U.S. Army Colonel, Retired). York s papers are archived by Michael E. Birdwell, Ph.D., who is an associate professor of history at Tennessee Technological University, one of the four institutions that will compete for the yearly honor. After the completion of the football season, the Sergeant York Trophy is awarded to the institution with the best head-to-head record in the match-ups with their fellow Tennessee schools. In the event of a tie, the award is shared; however, the previous winner will retain the trophy if they are part of the tie. If the tie is between two other institutions, the trophy will go to the institution that has gone the most seasons without winning the trophy. The award is presented to the winning institution annually at the Pepsi Celebration of Champions which is hosted each spring by the Nashville Sports Council. The event was created in 1999 and salutes amateur and professional sports in Tennessee. (on the Southern Heritage Classic game getting cancelled) We always go through our pregame progressions, and we re always ready to go out and play on Saturdays, so just not to play was kind of disappointing. I know all of us wanted to play and get after Jackson State, but it s just one of those things. It happens sometimes. Once again they showed resilience, they showed toughness, and they showed a never quit attitude. We came out in the second half, and they scored and we were able to bounce back and come back and do some things. I was really proud of our football team. We did what we needed to do. We said we wanted to keep the game close coming into the fourth quarter and give ourselves the opportunity to win, and that s exactly what we did. You see it in practice every day We scratch and fight, and these kids have really, really earned the right to be a really good football team. I didn t think we played well even before the injury came up. All we have to do is come back next week and do what we have to do. Stay locked in. LINEBACKER JASHUN BRYANT (on what the defense did well against Austin Peay) I thought we did well in all aspects of the defense, its just mental errors. We had a linebacker fall down Blair Edwards. I had to step up, and it didn t fall off one bit, but it s a tough loss. (on how to put Austin Peay behind them) We just go to practice, go to work, watch film and keep going. Game 7 Oct. 13, 2018 Roy Stewart Stadium ( ) Murray, Ky Final Tennessee State Murray State TSU HEAD COACH ROD REED (on last week s game at Austin Peay) I thought that we came out really, really flat. I didn t do a good enough job of getting us ready to play this week. Give credit to Austin Peay. They took advantage of everything that we gave them. You just can t go on the road and turn the ball over five times and give them the ball back in plus territory. They took advantage. They had 14 points off turnovers. It was disappointing. I thought our kids fought hard. I thought we tried to give ourselves a chance to win the game. It was tit for tat for a minute, but one too many turnovers. (on receiving updates from Staci Abercrombie mother of Christion Abercrombie) Obviously, she texts me every time something good happens. I ask her if she would do that for me and keep me abreast with everything that s going on. He is showing some improvement and doing some things that are really positive so we ve got to keep praying and hopefully he ll continue to progress on a daily basis. I m really happy for him and the family right now. We re going to keep praying for them. (on facing Murray State) We ve got a good Murray State team that we re going up against on their turf. We haven t played particularly well there. They spread the ball around. They ve got some good running backs. They ve got good receivers. Defensively, they get after you. They re not going to let you run the football. We ve got our work cut out for us. (on Murray State s offensive output last week) They still throw the ball. Don t get it twisted. They still throw the ball a lot. When you get spread out, I think they took what the defense gave them. They were in some three down stuff, and I think they gave up the edges a little bit. They did a really good job. Their backs do a good job of jump cutting and finding the right holes. Their line has done a terrific job blocking. They do just enough to keep you off balance in all areas. MURRAY STATE HEAD COACH MITCH STEWART (on last week s performance) I m really proud of the way the guys played, the way the guys fought. It was an incredible game Saturday night. It always is against a team like Eastern Illinois. Hats off to those guys. They fought their butts off, and we were just fortunate that we were able to find a way to win at the end. I m very proud of our guys. (on his team s challenge facing TSU) Now they have the challenge of racking it back up and doing it again against Tennessee State. They re a team that is obviously very athletic and plays with a lot of effort. The one thing I always like is when I watch another team, I like to watch their kickoff unit and see the way that they cover because I think you can tell a lot about their team watching their kickoff unit cover. Tennessee State s kickoff coverage team is downright scary the way that those guys run and the effort that they have covering the field. We ve got our hands full. I think it will be a great atmosphere. It s going to be beautiful weather, and we re hoping to get as many people in the seats as possible. (on preparing for TSU with only four games to go off of) Obviously, that factors into your preparation because you don t have a lot of stuff to go off of this year. Tennessee State is an athletic bunch. They re big, they re physical and they play hard. Coach (Rod) Reed has done a tremendous job. The effort with which his kids play with is tremendous.
