After the completion of the football season, the Sergeant York Trophy is awarded to the institution with the best head-to-head record in the match-ups with their fellow Tennessee schools. In the event of a tie, the award is shared; however, the previous winner will retain the trophy if they are part of the tie. If the tie is between two other institutions, the trophy will go to the institution that has gone the most seasons without winning the trophy. The award is presented to the winning institution annually at the Pepsi Celebration of Champions which is hosted each spring by the Nashville Sports Council. The event was created in 1999 and salutes amateur and professional sports in Tennessee. Reed experienced immediate success as a head coach, leading the Tigers to a win in his debut game, 27-14, over Alabama A&M on Sept. 4, 2010 in the John Merritt Classic. He also broke an eight-game losing streak to Florida A&M, downing the Rattlers, 29-18, in the Atlanta Classic. Reed coached six players to All-OVC Teams including safety Eugene Clifford who also was a Sports Network, Phil Steele and BOXTOROW All-American. The Tigers increased their win total in their second season under Reed and finished the 2011 season on a hot streak, winning four of their last six games. The stretch included a, 42-40, upset win at No. 19 ranked Tennessee Tech on Oct. 15. Reed produced even more All-OVC players in year two, as seven made postseason squads. Two more defenders garnered All-American honors under Reed s tutelage in linebacker Rico Council and Joseph Wylie. He also helped Lamar Divens and Sidney Tarver ink NFL contracts. The Big Blue continued its success in 2012 by rattling off seven straight victories to open the season. The Tigers finished the year with an 8-3 record, its best since The performance earned TSU HBCU Program of the Year honors by HBCU Huddle. Several players earned postseason accolades including running back Trabis Ward who was named to the College Sports All-American Team after running for 1,460 yards and 15 touchdowns. Three more Tigers were Sheridan All-Americans including Sherman Carter who signed an NFL deal with fellow offensive lineman Rogers Gaines following suit. Reed turned in his finest season to date in 2013, as the Tigers finished 10-4 and won a FCS Playoff Game for the first time since It capped an impressive run in which Reed improved his club s win total by at least two in each of his first four campaigns. TSU won its first HBCU National Championship since 1982 and the team s shutout win over Butler in the first round of the playoffs was the first victory for the OVC in postseason play in nearly 30 years. A school record 12 Tigers were chosen to the league s all-conference teams at season s end and Kadeem Edwards (143rd) and Demetrius Rhaney (250th) were selected in the NFL Draft. 20 2017 Game Recaps Tennessee State at Tennessee Tech (Oct. 28, 2017) Game 1 Tennessee State 17, Georgia State 10 Quotes and Notes Junior Offensive Tackle Christian Morris - On beating an FBS Team First of all, this is a huge win. We re an FCS team, and we came out there and beat an FBS team. They were very talented, but we handled business. - On the offensive line The Offensive line played phenomenal tonight. We had a couple mishaps, but we played phenomenal. Senior Linebacker Chris Collins - On winning the opener It means a lot to the team. We felt like we wanted to start off the season strong. We feel like we played a great defensive game. Offensively, we played well too. I feel like we played a great game and now we just have to get ready for Jackson State. - On beating an FBS Team I don t think many people outside of us thought we would win, but it s good to prove people wrong. In our heart, we felt like we re the best, so we expect to do things like that. Coming into this game, I wanted to do it for the alumni and for our school. The alumni are what started this. Before the game, I tweeted, keep the tradition alive, and that s what we wanted to do. - On scoring a touchdown That was my first touchdown so I was really excited, but I have to give the credit to Sabree (Curtis) for getting us down there in the first place, and the line for blocking as well as they did. Treon (Harris) had a great drive, and it just played out for us. Freshman Safety Vincent Sellers - On getting the win It feels good. It s been a long camp, and we ve been working very hard. 21 2017 Game Recaps Tennessee State at Tennessee Tech (Oct. 28, 2017) Game 2 Tennessee State 17, Jackson State 15 Quotes and Notes Defensive Coordinator Garry Fisher - On what he liked from the defense They just fought. That was the biggest thing. They fought hard all night. No matter what the situation was, they rose up to the occasion. We gave up some yards and they got into the red zone a couple times, but we were able to hold them to field goals, which was huge for us tonight. - On bending but not breaking I thought we tackled well. They hit us with a couple of plays. Their passing attack was on point, so they found some creases in our defense, and they drove down there, but we work on red zone defense every day. We were able to hold them to field goals and come up with a big interception. - On the defense coming up big We take pride as a team. No matter how the game goes, we have to find a way to stop the other team s offense. Both defenses played well but at the end of the night, our defense outplayed theirs. It being a rivalry game and me being from Memphis, you never want to come back home and lose a game whether it s conference or non-conference. It was very big for us to come out here and get a win. I m proud of my team. The defense really stepped up for us. The offense wasn t really clicking like how we expected, but we know it s early in the season. - On the punt return for a touchdown It was a designed left return. As soon as I caught the ball I saw a lot of white jerseys on the left, so I knew it was going to be a good return. As soon as I started to run, I just took advantage of it and took it to the endzone. Junior Safety Laquarius Cook - On being 2-0 It s big. The team came out playing hard and kept our confidence up. The win was good for us. - On winning with room for improvement It lets us know that if we get to hitting on all cylinders, that we ll be running and we ll be unstoppable. Senior Defensive Lineman Jason Morrow - On being 2-0 It s a great feeling to be 2-0, but it s still the beginning of the season. We still have a long road ahead of us. We can t look too far ahead in the season. - On the positives of the defense We just kept fighting. That s one thing Coach Fisher told us. You don t quit. If everything is going wrong, you still don t quit. You don t hold your head down. You just keep fighting, and that s what we did tonight, and that s a big reason why we won tonight. 22 2017 Game Recaps Tennessee State at Tennessee Tech (Oct. 28, 2017) Game 3 Tennessee State 24, Florida A&M 13 Quotes and Notes Senior Defensive Lineman Jason Marrow - On the win tonight It s always good to win. I m going to say what I said last week, it s still early in the season. We still have to go out there and keep working because we still have a long road ahead of us. We ve got a lot of teams that we need to beat on our schedule. - On blocking the kicks Being relentless and coming off the ball. Not taking no for an answer. Points are points. We have to do whatever we can to keep the offense off the board. - On how he blocked the kicks It was just in the moment. I just did what I was taught. I just wanted to get back there and make something happen. Senior Wide Receiver Patrick Smith - On the play of the offense We stepped it up, especially after the first two games. In the first half, we started off slowly, but we saw that we could do what we wanted to do. We picked it up in the second half. As we keep going on throughout the season, especially going into conference play, we need to keep getting better. It builds confidence in the team. It helps you think about being 4-0, 5-0 and take it one game at a time. We feel like the only people who can stop us is us. You can tell from this game. We had a lot of mistakes that took us back on offense, but once we get it together, we ll be very, very explosive and hard to stop. Senior Defensive Lineman Latrelle Lee - On the defense We missed a couple tackles here and there. We weren t as precise and fundamentally sound as we ve been, but we played a good game and got the win. - On being undefeated through three games That s big. Just mentally being 3-0 is always a good thing. To be undefeated heading into conference and keeping that streak alive, we want to keep it going. - On beating Florida A&M It s always good to beat your rivals. It s a storied rivalry, so it s great to get the win. Junior Quarterback Treon Harris - On the success of the offense Controlling the line of scrimmage was big. We controlled the line of scrimmage from the offensive line. They did a great job of moving their guys out of the way to create some lanes to run the ball and throw the ball. - On beating FAMU It means a lot. Nobody wants to leave the stadium with a loss in a classic game and a rivalry game like this. We prepared all week and we got better.
