In 1927, he established the Alvin C. York Institute after spending several years raising money for the school which opened as a private institution. That school was established, in part, to provide educational opportunities denied to the boys and girls of Fentress Country. In 1937, the Institute became a state special school after an appeal to the Tennessee State Legislature. The school, located in Jamestown, Tenn., is still in operation today. York died on Sept. 2, 1964 and the foundation which he helped establish in 1920 The Sergeant York Patriotic Foundation was dormant for many years. The Foundation was re-established by Lipscomb Davis, Jr. in 1992 and is currently run by Sgt. York s grandson Gerald (U.S. Army Colonel, Retired). York s papers are archived by Michael E. Birdwell, Ph.D., who is an associate professor of history at Tennessee Technological University, one of the four institutions that will compete for the yearly honor. After the completion of the football season, the Sergeant York Trophy is awarded to the institution with the best head-to-head record in the match-ups with their fellow Tennessee schools. In the event of a tie, the award is shared; however, the previous winner will retain the trophy if they are part of the tie. If the tie is between two other institutions, the trophy will go to the institution that has gone the most seasons without winning the trophy. The award is presented to the winning institution annually at the Pepsi Celebration of Champions which is hosted each spring by the Nashville Sports Council. The event was created in 1999 and salutes amateur and professional sports in Tennessee. 20 2018 Game Recaps tennessee State vs. Jackson State (Sept. 8, 2018) Game 1 Tennessee State 34, Bethune-Cookman 3 Quotes and Notes QUARTERBACK MICHEAL HUGHES (on being 1-0) It s very important. That s how you want to start the season off. I m very excited. A lot of guys put in a lot of hard work for this moment. It s very exciting to start the season off 1-0. (on chemistry with Chris Rowland) Chris and I worked all summer together. He s a hard-working guys, and he gets open when he needs to, so he did a good job." (on putting up 525 yards of total offense) That says we re explosive. We re in no huddle this year, so it gives us more opportunities - more snaps. It wasn t a surprise for me. It s great. LINEBACKER JAMES GREEN (on the success of the defense) Tonight s success on the defensive side was great. Even though they had too many yards for us to be comfortable, we played a good game. We re going to continue to get better. (on the mentality on third down) Put a foot on their neck. We weren t going to let them come back. We were going to continue to play defense and be great. That s how we re going to play. We have to have some juice. Stadium: Nissan Stadium Attendance: (on the play of the newcomers) We set the tempo for the season, and we re going to keep getting better week-by-week. We re one defense. We re going to continue helping each other. SEFETY LAQUARIUS COOK (on winning the opening game) That s big. We came out and played strong. First game so guys had to get the jitters out. We ve got a lot of stuff we can learn from, but it s good to get the win. (on winning the John Merritt Classic as a senior) It means a lot. I haven t lost a John Merritt Classic since I ve been here. I m proud to say that. (on the strong play of the defense) That s Coach (Garry) Fischer and the guys believing in what we do. We still have work to do. It was alright, but we re trying to be number one in the nation, so we have work to do. OFFENSIVE LINEMAN ANTHONY GETER (on the play of the offensive line) I think the offensive line did a great job of pass protecting and run blocking. We re just doing what Coach E taught us all year. All camp, really, just dominate up front. (on switching quarterbacks) Sometimes we had issues with getting calls off and getting set, but it s really no big deal. Both of them played well. 21 2018 Game Recaps tennessee State vs. Jackson State (Sept. 8, 2018) Game 2 Tennessee State vs. Jackson State Preview OFFENSIVE LINEMAN THOMAS BURTON (on playing in Memphis for the Southern Heritage Classic) It s always good to go home and play in front of the home crowd. That game, for sure, a lot of festivities, big crowd, it s always fun. We re excited for it. (on making sure the game doesn t come down the last play like last Southern Heritage Classic) This year we re looking to go down there and handle business, put them to sleep early so it won t come down to the last play. We re going to handle our business and everything will take care of itself. Game 2 Sept. 8, 2018 Liberty Bowl () Memphis, Tenn Final Jackson State Tennessee State TSU HEAD COACH ROD REED (On the win the John Merritt Classic) "I thought that our guys came out and started fast. I thought we played well. We were able to get up 14 (points) early on. We were efficient moving the football on the ground as well as through the air. I thought both of our quarterbacks played well. Demry (Croft) started off a little slow. I think we inserted Mike (Hughes) maybe the third or fourth series. He took us down the field on a scoring drive, and then Demry came back and had a couple good series. That was a big question mark. I know everyone wanted to know what was happening with that position. I thought both of those guys played well. Our running backs ran the ball well. We were able to play really good defense, which forced a couple turnovers. Anytime you can get two or three turnovers in a game, you've got to feel good about that." (On the impact of Te'kendrick Roberson and Christion Abercrombie) "That's what we expected out of them. That's why they were brought here - to have an immediate impact. Anytime you go get a kid from junior college and then you get an FBS transfer, you expect them to come in and be able to give you a little shot in the arm. I thought they stepped up, and they played well. We were able to get Te'kendrick a few touches, and we have a lot of running backs. We're able to keep those guys fresh. Abercrombie, that was a big question mark. Everyone wanted to know with Chris Collins' departure, who would step up. I thought in this game, he stepped up and played pretty decent for us." (On the quarterbacks - Demry Croft and Micheal Hughes) "They're going to compete. We're going to keep that competition going. I was really satisfied with both of those guys. Mike got the opportunity to sit on the sideline and watch the first couple of series, and he did a really good job of being studious and taking notes of what was going on. When he got in there, he was able to find a couple of guys and drive us right down the field. Demry came back and threw some big balls and had some big plays." (On the kicking game) "I feel great. (Antonio Zita) made two field goals and made all of his extra points. We stuck Kaleb Mosley in there. Mosley has a little stronger leg. We had a 46-yarder and he just missed it to the right. We have a couple of kickers that we feel really good about. Hopefully they'll continue to mature as the year goes on and we'll be able to count on them in critical situations." RUNNING BACK TE KENDRICK ROBERSON (on improving heading into the Southern Heritage Classic) I just feel like we have to clean up some stuff on film. We just have to get better at executing. In the fourth quarter (in the John Merritt Classic), we had a lot of penalties that set us back. We could have scored in the fourth quarter, but one of our touchdowns got called back. We need to execute more and finish in the end zone. (on not being satisfied with the win in week one) We want to get better every week in passing and rushing, so basically, we just have to get better at executing. LINEBACKER CHRISTION ABERCROMBIE (on the performance in week one versus Bethune-Cookman) It s the first game. We got our jitters out of the way. I think we played pretty well. We have some stuff to improve on, but overall, we played good. Defensively, we flew around. We could have finished a little harder, but overall we did well. (on staying focused when they re facing a rival) Day-by-day, we just have to go to practice and work hard. We have to focus on what we have to focus on and execute each and every day. (on staying sharp on defense with substitutions coming in and out) We just have to stay focused during the game and know what we have to do know our keys. Everyone playing has to know what they need to do. #BigBlueRising
