6 USA U17 Team Notes The Process The 2016 USA Basketball Women s U17 World Championship Team was announced on June 2. The 12-member team was selected after trials began on May 26 with 139 athletes and following four rounds of roster reductions that saw the number of hopefuls lowered to 101 and then 73 on May 28, to 41 on May 29 and to 18 finalists on May 30. The finalists trained from May 30- June 2, when the team was named. The team was selected by the USA Basketball Women s Developmental National Team Committee. Chaired in a non-voting position by Carol Callan (USA Basketball Women s National Team Director), the committee also includes AAU representatives Bill Larson and Sherri Pegues; National Federation of High Schools representatives Jody Patrick and Jill Rankin Schneider; and athlete representative Yolanda Griffith, a 2000 and 2004 Olympic gold medalist who played on five USA Basketball teams. USA Women s U16 And U17 Open Trials History Three of team members attended trials in 2016 as applicant athletes, including Janelle Bailey, Taylor Mikesell and Abby Prohaska. The 2016 USA Basketball Women s U17 World Championship Team Trials was the fifth time USA Basketball had open trials for its U16 or U17 national team. The first U16/U17 open trials was for the 2011 USA Women s U16 National Team, followed by open trials for the 2013 USA Women s U16 National Team. The first open trials for the USA Women s U17 World Championship Team was in 2014, followed by open trials for the 2015 USA Women s U16 National Team. Aquira DeCosta is one of two players who helped the USA qualify for the 2016 FIBA U17 World Championship with a bronze medal in the 2015 FIBA Americas U16 Championship. In 2013, Sabrina Ionescu and Taylor Murray became the first applicant athletes to be named to a 12-member USA roster. In 2015, Jayda Adams and Lauryn Miller were applicant athletes named to the 2015 USA Women s U16 National Team. USA Basketball Experience Along with Aquira DeCosta and Sedona Prince, the coaching staff of USA head coach Dori Oldaker and assistant coaches Dianne Lewis and Samantha Quigley helped the USA qualify for the 2016 FIBA U17 World Championship by virtue of a bronze-medal finish at the 2015 FIBA Americas U16 Championship. Team members with experience at the 2015 USA Basketball Women s U16 National Team Trials include: Janelle Bailey, Jenna Brown, Charli Collier, Maya Dodson, Destanni Henderson, Taylor Mikesell, Abby Prohaska and Christyn Williams. Named to the 2016 USA Basketball Women s U17 World Championship Team in their first USA Basketball trials experience were Samantha Brunelle and Olivia Nelson-Ododa. By Class Two team members are from the high school class of 2017; nine are from the class of 2018; and one will graduate high school in By The Numbers Standing at 6-foot-7, Sedona Prince is the tallest player on the roster; while three players who are 5-foot-8 Destanni Henderson is the shortest. Teaming Up While none of the 2016 USA Women s U17 World Championship team members attend the same high school team, Taylor Mikesell and Abby Prohaska will play on the same summer team in 2016 with Sports City U. The 12 members of the 2016 USA Women s U17 World Championship Team returned to the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs for a June 8-14 training camp before departing for Europe. National Honors Christyn Williams (Arkansas) was named as a 2016 Gatorade State Player of the Year. Aquira DeCosta a 2016 Naismith Trophy All-America honorable mention. Featured on the 2016 Naismith Trophy Girl s High School Player of the Year Watch List were: Jenna Brown, Charli Collier, DeCosta, Maya Dodson, Sedona Prince and Williams. Well Stated Georgia leads with the most athletes with three on the roster; followed by two from Ohio and Texas; and one each from Arkansas, California, Florida, North Carolina and Virginia. 10 USA Basketball Today Based in Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA Basketball is a nonprofit organization and the national governing body for men's and women's basketball in the United States. As the recognized governing body for basketball in the United States by the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) and the United States Olympic Committee (USOC), USA Basketball is responsible for the selection, training and fielding of USA teams that compete in FIBA sponsored international competitions, as well as for some national competitions, and for the development of youth basketball initiatives that address player development, coach education and safety. USA Basketball is an organization made up of organizations. There are five member categories. USA Basketball was organized in 1974 and known as the Amateur Basketball Association of the United States of America (ABAUSA). The name change to USA Basketball occurred Oct. 12, 1989, shortly after FIBA modified its rules to allow professional basketball players to participate in international competitions. USA Basketball then admitted the NBA as an active member and made the change. An 11-member Board of Directors governs USA Basketball. Serving since January 2001 as CEO/Executive Director is Jim Tooley, who has been with USA Basketball since From 2013 through 2015, 1,626 men and women players and 185 coaches participated in USA Basketball, including USA Basketball men s and women s 5x5 and 3x3 teams, USA Basketball trials and USA team training camps. Additionally, USA Basketball ranks No. 1 in all five of FIBA's world ranking categories, including combined, men's, women's, boys and girls. USA Basketball also sanctions U.S. basketball team tours of foreign countries and foreign basketball team tours of the U.S., as well as oversees the certification of FIBA and USA Basketball officials and the assignment of those officials to international competitions, and the licensing of players to play professionally overseas. A brief synopsis of the various competitions in which USA Basketball teams participate includes: Olympic Games Men's and women's Olympic basketball competition is held every four years (2016, 2020, etc.). For a second-consecutive Olympics, the USA captured double gold at the 2012 London Olympics with both the men s and women s teams compiling unblemished 8-0 records. The USA men have captured the gold in 14 of the 17 Olympics in which they have competed and compiled an incredible record. The USA women have earned the gold in five consecutive Olympics and boast of a sterling 50-3 record. The 2016 Summer Olympic Games will be held Aug in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. FIBA World Cup/World Championship The FIBA Basketball World Cup, known from 1950 until 2010 as the FIBA World Championship for Men, and the FIBA World Championship for Women, are the flagship events of FIBA competitions. Held every four years, the USA again swept double gold in The next FIBA Basketball World Cup for men will be in China in 2019, while the FIBA World Championship for Women will be held in 2018 in Spain. Pan American Games Started in 1951 for men and 1955 for women, the Pan American Games are held every four years (2019, 2023, etc.) in the year preceding the Olympics. Countries from FIBA Americas are eligible to compete. The USA men have an overall record, winning eight of a possible 17 gold medals, while the USA women have won seven of 15 gold medals, including 2007, and own a record. The 2019 Pan American Games are slated to be held in Lima, Peru. The U.S. women celebrate a fourth-straight Olympic gold medal at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. (Garrett Ellwood/NBAE/Getty Images. World University Games The World University Games are held for men and women every two years (2017, 2019, etc.), and only current university student-athletes or recent graduates are eligible. The USA men in 21 appearances have collected 13 gold, three silver and three bronze medals, while the U.S. women in 18 appearances have won 10 gold, six silver and one bronze medal. The 2017 World University Games will be held in Taipei, Taiwan. U19 / U18 Championships USA Basketball also fields men's and women's national teams for players 19 years old or younger. 12 Named as head coach of the 2016 USA Basketball Women s U17 World Championship Team on March 3, 2016, Dori Oldaker (Mt. Lebanon H.S., Pa.) previously helped lead the USA to a bronze medal as the USA head coach at the 2015 FIBA Americas U16 Championship in Puebla, Mexico. She also helped guide the USA a gold medal and a 13-0 record as head coach of the 2014 U.S. Youth Olympic Games Women s 3x3 Basketball Team; and four times she has served as a USA Basketball court coach, including at trials for the 2014 USA U17 World Championship Team, the 2012 USA U17 and U18 National Teams and the 2011 USA U16 National Team. I m very grateful to have this opportunity to coach this USA Basketball U17 World Championship Team, Oldaker said. I m very humbled by it, and I m excited, too, to give my best effort. I really felt like we worked well together as a coaching staff, Oldaker said of her assistant coaches, Dianne Lewis and Samantha Quigley, who joined her on the USA coaching staff in 2015 as well. 13 Named as an assistant coach for the 2016 USA Basketball Women s U17 World Championship Team on March 3, 2016, Dianne Lewis (Thomas Edison H.S., Va.) will serve in her third USA Basketball coaching assignment. She also was the assistant coach for the bronze medal winning 2015 USA U16 Women s National Team, and she was a court coach for the 2014 USA Women s U17 World Championship Team Trials. I am grateful for another opportunity to serve as an assistant coach with USA Basketball, Lewis said. The chance to work with such amazing athletes and represent our country is one that I will always treasure. What an honor to work with two incredible coaches, Dori and Sam, Lewis added of USA head coach Dori Oldaker and assistant coach Samantha Quigley, with whom Lewis coached in 2015 as well. 14 Named as an assistant coach for the 2016 USA Basketball Women s U16 National Team on March 3, 2016, Samantha Quigley (University of St. Francis, Ill.) previously served as an assistant coach for the bronze medal winning 2015 USA Women s U16 National Team and as a court coach at a USA Basketball regional skills development camp in October of 2014 in Illinois. To return as a USA Basketball assistant coach means the world to me, Quigley said. I was able to learn so much from the assistant coaching position last season. To be honest, we are all very hungry to pick up where we left off. I am looking forward to building on some of the successes we had last summer and pushing the players to compete every day we are together. 30 2014 FIBA U17 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FOR WOMEN Pilsen, Czech Republic June 28-July 6, 2014 Winning by an average of 37.0 points per game, the 2014 USA U17 World Championship Team compiled a 7-0 record and won the USA s third-consecutive gold medal at the event from June 28- July 6 in Pilsen, Czech Republic. Joyner Holmes and Katie Lou Samuelson were named to the five-member all-tournament team. After a first half that saw the USA shoot 29.4 percent, the USA relied on defense in a win over China on June 28. Samuelson had 22 points and was 4-of-10 from 3-point to tie the U.S. women s U17 record, and the USA shot a team-best 23 3s. Taking on a team that had beaten it in exhibition one week prior, the USA never trailed in a win over France on June 29. Samuelson led with 17 points, and Asia Durr had 14 points. Recording 22 assists on 29 makes, the USA raced to a victory against Mali on July 1. Durr finished with 15; Holmes had 12 points and 11 rebounds; and Lauren Cox had 10 points and eight rebounds. Kristine Anigwe was 7-of-10 from the free throw line to tie the U.S. U17 women s record for free throw attempts. The USA saw five players reach double figures in a win over Mexico in the round of 16 on July 2. Arike Ogunbowale had 19 points; Durr and Holmes had 14 points apiece; Anigwe scored 12; and Samuelson added 10 points. The USA was 10-of-23 from 3-point to tie its record for 3-pointers made and attempted. The Americans celebrated the Fourth of July with an defeat of Canada to advance to the semifinals. Holmes led with 24 points and was 6-of-6 from the free-throw line, and Ogunbowale added 16 points and eight rebounds. Leading by just seven at halftime, the USA played its way into the gold-medal game with a hard-fought win over Hungary on July 5. Samuelson made six 3-pointers in the first quarter alone and finished 6-of-11 from beyond the arc to set USA U17 records for 3-pointers made and attempted on her way to 25 points. Anigwe tied the U.S. record for rebounds with 14 boards. In a battle of undefeateds, the USA came out with a thrilling win over Spain in the gold-medal game. Three players in double-figures helped the USA overcome 40 points from Spain s Angela Salvadores, who was tournament MVP. Cox led the USA with 20 points, 12 rebounds and a USA U17 record eight blocks; Durr scored 17; and Ogunbowale added 15. Tied at 71 with 1:36 left, Cox scored, then blocked Spain s shot and recovered the rebound, and Durr scored to make it Spain made a 3-pointer that was whistled off because of an offensive foul, and the USA missed its next attempt. Salvadores scored at 10.8, but as Spain was forced to foul, Durr hit two free throws, and the USA led with 7.1 seconds to play. The game reached its final when Salvadores scored two points at the buzzer. Hungary beat Czech Republic to win the bronze medal. The USA s Diamond DeShields earned MVP, and Linnae Harper was named to the prestigious five-member all-tournament team. The USA proved too fast for South Korea in its opening game, busting ahead of a full-court pressure for 72 points in the paint on its way to a win. Rebecca Greenwell led the USA with 23 points, and two players recorded double-doubles Brianna Turner with 20 points and 10 rebounds and Taya Reimer with 15 points and 10 boards. Greenwell compiled 17 points, while DeShields finished with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The USA wrapped up its preliminary round with a blowout against overmatched Mali on Aug. 22. The 70-point win tied for the largest margin of victory in U17 women s history. DeShields, Greenwell and Turner each scored 13 points, while all 12 U.S. players recorded at least one score and one rebound. After a first-half fight on Aug. 24, the USA pulled away from Australia in the third to record an win and advance to the semifinals. DeShields led with 19 points, and Mercedes Russell tallied 18 points and 14 rebounds. Collecting 55 points off the bench, the USA used its depth to wear down Canada in an semifinal win. All 12 players scored, including 11 points, eight rebounds and seven steals from Harper, 10 points from Davis, 10 points and seven rebounds from Oderah Chidom and 12 rebounds and seven points from Greenwell. The USA fought off a resilient Spain in its closest game of the tournament to capture gold on Aug. 26. Allen, who finished with 13 points, made three 3-pointers in the first 4:22 of the fourth to help put the game out of reach. 34 2010 FIBA U17 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP FOR WOMEN Rodez and Toulouse, France July 16-25, 2010 The USA opened play with a win over host France in front of a sold-out crowd of more than 2,000 on July 16 in Rodez. Five players scored in double figures for the USA, led by 13 points from Breanna Stewart and 12 points and 11 rebounds from Elizabeth Williams. Behind a 20-point, 14-rebound performance from Williams, the USA crushed Russia on July 17. Stewart added 12 points and nine rebounds, followed by nine points from Cierra Burdick and nine rebounds from Bashaara Graves. The USA wasted no time jumping on Canada, cruising to a win that featured points from all 12 U.S. players on July 18. Led by 21 points, including 5-of-6 shooting from 3-point, from Kaleena Mosqueda-Lewis, the USA also received 19 points from Jewell Loyd, 13 points from Bria Smith, 12 points from Morgan Tuck and Williams and 12 rebounds from Imani Stafford. The USA powered past Turkey on July 20. Loyd and Tuck led the USA with 11 points as all 12 U.S. players scored. The USA easily overpowered Japan to close out preliminary play on July 21. The USA, which was led by 30 points, from Stewart, featured seven players in double figures as all 12 U.S. players scored. Williams finished with 16 points on 7-of-7 shooting from the field, and the USA tallied 35 assists, including 10 from Massengale. A game-changing 23-4 run led to an eventual victory over Spain in the quarterfinals on July 23 in Toulouse. Led by 16 points, including 3-of-4 shooting from deep, by Mosqueda- Lewis, all 12 U.S. players scored and grabbed at least one rebound. Williams tallied 11 points, Burdick and Loyd added 10 points each and Jordan Adams dished out five assists. The USA needed nearly all 40 minutes to secure a win over China in the semifinals on July 24. Massengale led the USA with 22 points, followed by 17 points and 11 rebounds from Stewart and 14 points and 11 rebounds from Williams. The USA capped its performance and captured the gold with a win over France on July 25. For a fifth time, all 12 U.S. players scored, led by 20 points from Massengale and 15 points each from Mosqueda-Lewis and Williams. Overall, the USA led the tournament in 13 of 19 statistical categories, including scoring margin (+37.4), rebounding margin (+24.6), field goal percentage (.497), 3-point percentage (.408), assists per game (18.9) and blocks per game (7.4). In individual categories, five U.S. players combined for 11 top-five finishes. Massengale led the tournament with 5.4 apg. (43), Williams ranked second in field goal percentage (.618) and Stewart ranked second in blocked shots (2.3 bpg.).
