Junior Shyra Ely led all scorers with 20 points, while she nearly recorded a double-double by snatching a game-high nine rebounds. Also posting double-digit point totals were sophomore Shanna Zolman and junior Loree Moore, who scored 13 and 12 points, respectively. UT used strong shooting and solid defense to jump out to an early 22-point lead, 28-6, following a pair of free throws by Ely. The Lady Mocs cut the Big Orange s lead to 16 points, trailing just with 4:17remaining in the first half, but the home team responded with and eightto-two run, holding a advantage at the intermission. Tennessee held UTC to just 17-percent shooting (4-23) in the first half, while connecting on 52 percent (16-31) of its attempts. This time, the Lady Vols won the contest without the services of Ashley Robinson and Gwen Jackson who were sidelined with knee injuries. Additionally, senior pivot Michelle Snow managed just two points and four rebounds in a scant 12 minutes of action. 4 HIGH PROFILE GAMES EARLY The Lady Vols will be thrown into some high profile games early again this campaign. Two days after that is the home opener versus always tough George Washington. You guessed it, two days later, UT travels to #3 Texas for a Thanksgiving night clash on ESPN2. DODGING NO BULLETS Every Lady Vol non-conference opponent (13 teams) played in the NCAA Tournament last year. GOT GAME Senior All-America forward Shyra Ely played and started all 35 games last season and logged 1,055 minutes of playing time (30.1 mpg). LADY VOLS SIGN LINDSEY MOSS Pat Summitt, head basketball coach of the number one-ranked University of Tennessee Lady Volunteers, announced today that she had received signed scholarship papers from 6 1 guard Lindsey Moss of Chattahoochee H.S. in Alpharetta, Ga. We are excited to have Lindsey in Orange and White, said Summitt. She is an offensiveminded guard with all-around solid skills shooting, passing and handling the ball. She s tall, long and lanky -- really a fluid player. Moss committed to the Lady Vols in the summer of This season, she has been nationally ranked in both the All-Star Girls Report (22nd) and on the Blue Star Index top 100 (35th). She earned All- America honorable mention in both 2003 and 2004 and has been tabbed as an All- State selection since the ninth grade. Additionally, she was an invitee to both the Nike All-America Camp and the adidas Top 10 All-America Camp. She has led the CHS Cougars in almost every statistical category for three seasons while registering single game career highs in points (32), rebounds (22) and assists (13). Moss is expected to be the only UT women s basketball signee in THAT APOSTROPHE THING In all of Pat Summitt s years of coaching at Tennessee, she had only one player on the roster with an apostrophe in her name (that was Kathy O Neil way back in ) and never one with a hyphen. When Tye sha Fluker came along in 2002, she was the first to have an apostrophe in her first name. This season, a new member joined the apostrophe club, Sa de Wiley-Gatewood. Sa de also became the inaugural member of the hyphen club as well. LOOKING AHEAD TO N.C. STATE N.C. State women's basketball opened the season with an exhibition win over EA Sports on Nov. 16, The Wolfpack enters its 31st season as a program and the 30th under the direction of Head Coach and Hall of Famer Kay Yow. Yow s 14- member squad kicks-off the regular season on Nov. 19, taking on UNC Wilmington. Co-captains, senior Kendra Bell and junior Rachel Stockdale look to lead the Wolfpack to its 27th winning season as a program and 26th under Yow. The two are the Pack's only returning starters after N.C. State graduated three last season, including WNBA draftee, Kaayla Chones and ACC all-defensive team member, Nanna Rivers. Bell started 29 of her 30 appearances and averaged 7.2 ppg and 2.8 apg as a junior and led the team in minutes per game with Stockdale was the team's top three-point shooter as she hit 40.3 percent last year. Joining them is sophomore Marquetta Dickens, who returns as the Pack's leading scorer with 8.3 ppg and 9.3 ppg in conference play. State finished the season with a record and advanced to the NCAA tournament for the 17th time in its history. SUMMITT ON WEEKLY TELECONFERENCE ON WEDNESDAY Coach Pat Summitt s regularly scheduled weekly Wednesday teleconference will be on Nov. 24 at 11:00 a.m. Members of the media will be notified of the dial-in number on Monday. #14 HAS WEST VIRGINIA KARMA Rookie Alexis Hornbuckle, from Charleston, W.Va., wears uniform #14 for the Lady Vols. Z-TIME AT THE CHARITY STRIPE Even though they don t officially count, junior Shanna Zolman has kept her free throw streak alive through the exhibition games after nailing four charity tosses. Zolman will enter this season with a streak of having connected on 34-consecutive free throws. The Syracuse, Ind., native has not missed a free throw since the second half of the game at Kentucky on Jan. 29, Last season, she led the nation in free throw accuracy connecting at a 95 percent clip. Zolman missed just four last season (5-7 at #5 Stanford, 1-2 vs. Vandy in Knoxville and 7-8 at Kentucky). She finished with (.957). Maryland 25. Oklahoma AP POLL NOTES The Associated Press women s Top 25 basketball poll released on Jan. 1, 2001, marked the 400th appearance by the Lady Vols. Since the poll was started in 1976, UT has failed to appear in just 14 polls through the years. Currently, UT has been ranked in 341 consecutive polls and since the season and the Lady Vols have been in the top 10 for all but one poll. UT is the only team to have been ranked every year for the last 29 years of the poll. UT has appeared at least once per season over the poll's history. MOVED AHEAD OF UCONN This week s AP poll was the 95th time at number one for Tennessee, which regained the lead from Connecticut in that category. UConn has 94 appearances at No. 1. THE ASSOCIATED PRESS POLLING PLACE In the first Associated Press poll of the year on Nov. 8, the Tennessee Lady Vols began the season as the number one ranked team in the country. It marks the 11th time that UT has started the season as the number one team in the nation. UT also started #1 in the following seasons: , , , , , , , , , and In all, UT has been ranked number one 93 times in the history of the Associated Press poll. WE LL SEE YOU, AND YOU, AND YOU Here s a sobering thought for Lady Vol Head Coach Pat Summitt to ponder. Her Tennessee squad will face 19 teams in 27 games who are either currently ranked in the AP or ESPN Top 25 poll or are receiving votes. Ten teams are ranked in the Top 25 (LSU, Texas, Connecticut, Georgia, Duke, Stanford, Vanderbilt, Rutgers, DePaul and Louisiana Tech), while nine teams are receiving votes (Auburn, Chattanooga, Florida, George Washington, Mississippi, Mississippi St., Old Dominion, TCU and Temple). There are only five UT opponents on the schedule who do not appear anywhere in the polls (Alabama, Arkansas, Kentucky, N.C. State and South Carolina). Who did this schedule anyway? THE ESPN/USA TODAY POLLING PLACE In the first USA TODAY/ESPN poll of the year on Nov. 3, the Tennessee Lady Vols began the season as the number one ranked team in the country. It marks the 24th time in 29 years that UT has started the season in the top five in the nation. THE 1 VS. 2 MATCH-UP ACCORDING TO AP Just in case, we ll stick this note in here for some early match-ups. 12 GAME-BY -GAME SUMMARIES EXHIBITION GAME: CARSON-NEWMAN The top-ranked University of Tennessee women s basketball team opened its season with a victory against Carson-Newman in an exhibition game on Sunday, Nov. 7, at Thompson-Boling Arena. Tennessee was led by senior All-American Shyra Ely, who recorded a team-high 20 points to lead a quintet of Lady Vols with double-digit point totals. Senior Brittany Jackson and freshman Alexis Hornbuckle each tallied 14 points apiece, while sophomore Dominique Redding and senior Shanna Zolman registered 13 and 10 points, respectively. Hornbuckle s debut performance was especially impressive as she also totaled seven rebounds, seven assists, five steals and three blocks in 21 minutes of action. Despite the lopsided final score, UT s opposition proved tough early in the first half as the Lady Vols were unable to connect on a field goal for the first three minutes of action. Still struggling to find its rhythm at the offensive end of the floor, the Big Orange led by just one, 15-14, with 11:13 remaining in the first half. However, Tennessee s inspired play at the defensive end seemed to spark the offense, and the squad closed the half with a 21-6 run to take a comfortable lead into the locker room. Following the intermission, the Lady Vols came out firing on all cylinders and were successful on nine of their first 10 attempts from the floor. The squad also sank its first five shots from beyond the arc en route to extending its lead to 40 points, 74-34, less than eight minutes into the stanza. Utilizing its swarming defense and efficient offense (65 percent shooting in the second half), UT cruised to the 58-point triumph. UT s 105 points marks the first time that the team has scored more than 100 points since a win against Puerto Rico-Mayaguez on Nov. 29, EXHIBITION GAME: WEST COAST ALL-STARS The No. 1-ranked University of Tennessee women s basketball team closed out its preseason exhibition slate with a victory against the West Coast All-Stars on Sunday, Nov. 14, at Thompson-Boling Arena. Leading the way for the Lady Vols were senior All-American Shyra Ely and classmate Loree Moore, who each tallied 14 points. Moore was especially efficient, connecting on all six of her attempts from the floor, including two threepointers. Junior Tye sha Fluker and senior Brittany Jackson also notched double-figure point totals with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Early in the contest, both teams had trouble finding their rhythm at the offensive end of the floor as they each had five turnovers by the first media timeout. However, it did not take long for UT to put things together, as it erupted on a 22-3 run to take a 28-8 lead. Despite being held to just one field goal during the 10-minute stretch, the West Coast All-Stars would not go away quietly and responded with a 7-2 burst to close the margin to 15 points. The Lady Vols answered the challenge, though, and took a comfortable advantage into the locker room. Following the intermission, the Big Orange turned up the pressure defensively and quickly extended the lead to with a 12-4 run, capped off by a breakaway layup by Jackson. Tennessee gradually extended the margin throughout the second half, going ahead by as many as 45 points before cruising to the lopsided triumph. On the afternoon, the Lady Vols shot 44.3 percent (27-61) from the field, while holding the opposition to just 25 percent (14-56) shooting. Additionally, Tennessee dominated the glass, 51-34, as five players snared at least five rebounds. UT also recorded nine blocks and forced 23 turnovers. Nov. 7, 2004 * Knoxville, Tenn.
