IN OUR LAST GAME The top-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols kept their perfect SEC record intact with a win over South Carolina in front of 18,453 at Thompson-Boling Arena on Feb. 8, The victory was UT s second against the Gamecocks during the season. Tennessee (19-2, 8-0) has now won 52 consecutive conference home games. After allowing the first basket of the game, the Lady Vols rattled off nine straight points for a 9-2 lead. Junior Shyra Ely and sophomore Shanna Zolman provided all of the offense early as the pair combined to score the first 15 points. While South Carolina would cut the margin to just two, UT crashed the boards hard and connected on a number of second-chance points to extend its advantage to 11 with just under eight minutes left in the opening frame. The Gamecocks made a number of small runs but could not close the gap before the half, as Pat Summitt s squad went to the locker room ahead, In the first session, the Lady Vols shot 38.9 percent from the field, while USC checked in at a 44.8 percent clip. However, UT dominated the glass and held a rebounding advantage. Zolman was the leading scorer at the break with 12 points, but she would not score in the second half. In what appeared to be a reverse of the opening minutes of the first half, Tennessee scored the opening basket following intermission only to have USC erupt on a 12-2 run to even the score at 42. Unfazed by the seeming shift in momentum, UT went on a decisive 16-0 run over the next six minutes, energized by the defensive play of senior LaToya Davis, to take a commanding lead. The Gamecocks answered with a 6-0 spurt but were not able to get closer than nine points the rest of the way. In addition to Zolman, three other Lady Vols recorded double-digit point totals: Ely (12), Tasha Butts (10) and Tye sha Fluker (10). Ely also grabbed 12 rebounds for her second straight double-double and the seventh of the season. Davis also filled up the stat sheet with seven points, seven rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks. On the afternoon, Tennessee connected on just 37.8 percent of its shots. Despite being out-shot, UT totaled a season-high 58 rebounds, with amazing 27 more than the Gamecocks.

UT returns home for a quick contest against #20 Florida (Feb. 19) and then travels to Ole Miss (Feb. 22). NEXT OPPONENT VANDERBILT While Tennessee is playing at Georgia tonight, the Vanderbilt Commodores (16-6, 4-5 SEC) have the night off. 52 CONSECUTIVE SEC HOME WINS With the victory over South Carolina on , the Lady Vols have now won 52 consecutive SEC home games. The last SEC loss at home was to Georgia on Dec. 8, 1996, (OT). SPENT SOME TIME IN ATHENS ALREADY WELL, ATHENS, GREECE The Tennessee Lady Volunteer basketball team, along with an enthusiastic travel party, spent nearly two weeks traveling to Italy and Greece, August 7-18, UT coach Pat Summitt and her staff were accompanied by eight returning Lady Vol players who took on teams from Pesaro, Italy, Romania, Bulgaria and the Hellenic National Team and came home with a 3-2 record. Along the way, the team and its supporters encountered a variety of cultures and enjoyed an array of sights, perhaps seen only once in a lifetime. MOORE S SURGERY SCHEDULED Tennessee Lady Vol junior guard Loree Moore, who suffered an injury to her left knee with 8:42 left in Tennessee's upset victory over top-ranked Duke on Jan. 24, will have surgery on Feb. 16. Diagnostic testing on Jan., 26 revealed a torn anterior cruciate ligament of left knee, according to University of Tennessee team orthopaedist Dr. William T. Youmans. Moore will be lost for the remainder of the season. We were cautiously optimistic but realized at the same time what the extent of the injury might be, said Lady Vol head coach Pat Summitt. I really feel bad for Loree. She has been a great leader for this team and has some big shoes to fill at the point guard position. No doubt, though, losing Loree is a tough and unfortunate break for our team, said Summitt. Moore averaged 7.9 ppg, 5.5 rpg and 2.8 apg while logging 27.7 minutes per contest. Moore has been undergoing presurgery rehabilitation for the last two weeks. BEEN THERE, DONE THAT... The Lady Vols have already played this season without the services of Loree Moore on a couple of occasions. Moore served a two-game suspension at the beginning of the season for missing a class. In her absence, UT defeated the West Coast All-Stars (86-57) and Athletes in Action (88-64). Last August, the UT Lady Vol returnees traveled to Rome, Italy, and Athens, Greece, for a 12-day trip of exhibition basketball. The summer squad was without the services of Moore, who was the starting point guard for the USA team at the Pam American Games in Santo Domingo. In her absence, the eight returning UT players fashioned a 3-2 record on the trip and battled back to win the Greek International Basketball Tournament. (see p.304 in the media guide) Tasha Butts, Shanna Zolman, Brittany Jackson and LaToya Davis all took turns at the point.

However, the contest was all UT as the Lady Vols played inspired basketball from the opening tip to the final buzzer in an rout of UGA in front of 13,175 loyal Orange & White followers. With the victory, Tennessee remained on top of the SEC standings with an unblemished 11-0 (23-3 overall) mark, while the Lady Bulldogs fell to 17-7 overall and 8-3 in conference play. Gwen Jackson once again led the Lady Vols in scoring with 14 points, but wasn t the only Lady Vol to shine on this night. Junior Tasha Butts hustled for a career-high 13 rebounds to lead UT, while Shyra Ely posted her second double-double of the season with a 12-point, 12-rebound performance. Courtney McDaniel played only 17 minutes, but recorded an incredible 13 points and six rebounds in that short span. Overall, Tennessee shot a blistering 54.1% from the floor, 77.3% from the charity stripe and dominated the boards 53-25, while holding Georgia to only 30.8% on 20-of-65 shooting. UT took control from the opening tip as Gwen Jackson fed Kara Lawson for a quick lay -up and a 2-0 lead only five seconds into the game. The Lady Vol offense kept its foot on the accelerator in opening a 19-4 lead following a Loree Moore three-pointer. A lay - up by Gwen Jackson and a long three by Brittany Jackson gave Tennessee a advantage before Georgia finally managed to cut into the gap, closing the deficit to only 16 points at the half at Butts had nine first-half rebounds, while Gwen Jackson posted 10 first stanza tallies. An 9-0 run out of the locker room, completed by a Moore trey, boosted UT to a commanding lead with 17:46 to play. The gap would eventually reach 31 points at 71-40, following two McDaniel free throws, and after a McDaniel offensive putback, before the Lady Bulldogs managed to cut its deficit to at the 3:37 mark. That s as close as UGA would get as a Shanna Zolman trey with 45 seconds remaining set the score at 87-60, as UT picked up a crucial conference victory. Tennessee now leads the overall series with Georgia and has won 46 consecutive SEC games at home dating back to a (OT) loss to UGA on Dec. 8, COMMON OPPONENTS UT and Georgia share two common opponents outside of SEC teams this season. Georgia lost to Stanford, 61-59, and lost to Texas, 71-58, while Tennessee Stanford (70-66 OT and lost to Texas,

Boston College AP POLL NOTES The Associated Press women s Top 25 basketball poll released on Jan. 1, 2001, marked the 400th appearance by the Lady Vols. Since the poll was started in 1976, UT has failed to appear in just 14 polls through the years. Currently, UT has been ranked in 334 consecutive polls and since the season and the Lady Vols have been in the top 10 for all but one poll. UT is the only team to have been ranked every year for the last 28 years of the poll. UT has appeared at least once per season over the poll's history. OUR LAST MEETING WITH GEORGIA IN ATHENS The #3/4-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols survived a scare at #22/21 Georgia on Feb. 10, 2002, and produced an ugly victory. UT managed to tie a 22-year old record for fewest second half points with 17, managing just five field goals in the second half on 27 attempts for a paltry 18% field goal average but survived to win. To start the game, Georgia jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead at 16:18. Tasha Butts tied the score at 10 with a lay -up at 11:53. After a time out, the Lady Vols went on an 11-2 run to post a lead with 8:10 to go in the first half. UT pushed its margin out by as many as 15 points (35-20 at 2:08) before taking a lead into the locker room at the half. To open the second stanza, UT scored three free throws in the opening three minutes of play before Kara Lawson hit a finger roll basket at 16:50 to give UT a lead. Rookie Shyra Ely connected on UT s second basket of the half at 15:45 for a lead. Gwen Jackson s baseline jumper at 13:12 pushed the Lady Vol lead back to nine points, Ten minutes went by before Jackson hit UT s fourth field goal of the half with 3:10 left to play. By that time, UGA had taken a lead with 5:46 to go and the two teams were trading leads. After Jackson s basket to tie the score at 48-all, April McDivitt hit a couple of free throws with 2:18 showing to tie the game at 50-all. UT s fifth and final basket of the second half came on a clear-out play to Lawson. UT spread the floor and she went to the hoop with 1:06 left for the advantage. UGA almost pulled it out but Kara Braxton s shot rimmed out as time expired. UT misfired on 22 shots in the second half with 10 as missed lay-ups or shots in the paint. On the afternoon, Jackson and Ely led with 12 points each. Also in extra digits was Lawson with 10. Michelle Snow led with six boards. UT connected on a season low 34% of its shots and a 53% from the charity stripe. UT was killed on the boards with a pounding from the Dawgs. The Lady Vols committed 17 turnovers on four Georgia steals while forcing 28 miscues on 14 UT thefts. Additionally, UT s bench outscored UGA, LADY VOLS HAILING FROM GEORGIA Two Lady Vol seniorss hail from the state of Georgia as starting guard Tasha Butts represents Milledgeville and starting forward guard LaToya Davis calls Forsyth home. Outside of the state of Tennessee, which has produced 60 Lady Vol hoopsters, the state of Georgia has seen 17 players cross over the Tennessee border to play in Knoxville all-time. GEORGIA WAS THE LAST TO DO IT Tennessee s last SEC loss at home was a little over six years ago. And the last SEC team to beat the Lady Vols in Knoxville? That would have been against the Georgia Lady Bulldogs on Dec. 8, 1996, (OT) that was 52 consecutive SEC home wins ago. UT & UGA RANKING OUR OPPONENTS IN The #3 ranked Tennessee Lady Vols have faced 10 ranked teams in 21 games (49% of its opponents) while Georgia has taken on four ranked team in 20 games (20% of its opponents). After the Georgia contest, UT will see two more ranked teams. The last national championship team Tennessee took on was the 2002 NCAA Women s Basketball Champion UConn. Tennessee is 9-3 in games played at home, 4-4 away and 7-7 at neutral sites. In all, UT has played 10 defending champions in 34 games in various title defense seasons. UT s record when playing defending champs: Connecticut (2-4), Delta State (1-0), Louisiana Tech (2-3), Notre Dame (1-0), Old Dominion (4-3), Purdue (1-0), Southern Cal (1-3), Stanford (5-0), Texas (1-1) and UCLA (2-0). UT has defended six NCAA titles and produced an overall record of in the six seasons following a championship. This

5 number reflects the campaign of the season which skews the numbers due to the high number of losses. However, following the 1997 championship season, UT went 39-0 in winning the 1998 title. This season, the Lady Vols will face 2003 NCAA Champ UConn in Knoxville on Feb. 5, BACK TO THE RANKED After a hiatus from playing ranked teams night after night, following a season- opening seven ranked opponents out of the first 10 games, the Lady Vols are back to the land of the ranked. Previously top-ranked Duke will be followed by games in the upcoming weeks against #22/25 Auburn, #4/3 Connecticut, #19 Georgia, #20 Florida and #16 LSU. PLAYED A FEW RANKED The Tennessee senior class of Ashley Robinson, Tasha Butts, LaToya Davis and Courtney McDaniel have faced 67 ranked teams out of 126 career games 53% of their collegiate contests have been spent playing against the best in women s basketball. Following the game with #4/3 Connecticut, the senior class has compiled a record against ranked teams winning 81% of the time. Overall, this senior class is in all games (.885) for their Tennessee tenure. UT S LAST LOSS TO AN UNRANKED TEAM? When is the last time Tennessee lost to an unranked team? That would have been to LSU on Mar. 2, 2002 at the SEC Tournament in Nashville, Tenn. LSU had been in and out of the Top 25 polls in late January and February. Prior to that, UT s last loss to an unranked team was five years previous (to the day) losing to Auburn on Mar. 2, 1997 at the SEC Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn. THE NATION S STRONGEST SCHEDULE AND RPI The WBCA/Summerville overall Rating Percentage Index (RPI) ( ) has the Lady Vols on top with a score of.740. The top five includes: 1. UT.740, 2. UConn.690, 3. Penn State.684, 4. Duke.681, 5. Purdue.675. The Summerville-WBCA RPI also looks at each school s strength of schedule. The Lady Vols are also on top with an index of.725. Following UT: 2. Penn State.671, 3. Notre Dame.658, 4. Rutgers.659, and 5. Duke.648. PECK S THE ONLY ONE The roll call goes like this: Sylvia Hatchell, Sharon Fanning, Jane Albright, Lea Henry, Nancy Darsch, Trish Roberts, and now Mickie DeMoss. etc.,etc. Tennessee coach Pat Summitt has faced many former players and assistant coaches in a variety of games thru the years but Carolyn Peck is the only one to record a victory over her former boss. While at Purdue, Peck handed Summitt a loss on Nov.15, 1998 in the State Farm Tip Off Classic in West Lafayette, Ind. The defeat snapped UT s 46-game consecutive winning streak (that was second only to Louisiana Tech s all-time 54-game winning streak). FREE THROW A GO-GO Sophomore Shanna Zolman has seen very few free throws she doesn t like. In fact, she leads the nation in free throw accuracy connecting at a 93 percent clip. Zolman has missed just four this season (5-7 at #5 Stanford, 1-2 vs. Vandy in Knoxville and 7-8 at Kentucky) and is for.943. Zolman had connected on 22 consecutive charity tosses before missing against Vanderbilt on Jan. 22, Tennessee s all-time leader in consecutive free throws was Tiffany Woosley who hit 45 consecutive thru DOUBLE-DIGIT WINS Besides Louisiana Tech, with 17 wins over UT, only three other teams have recorded double-digit victories against the Lady Vols during the Pat Summitt era of Lady Vol basketball. Georgia has claimed 13 wins in 44 meetings, Connecticut has registered 12 wins in 18 meetings, and Texas 10 wins in 25 meetings with the Lady Vols. LADY VOL STREAKS IT S ALL UCONN The last time the Lady Vols lost at home was against Connecticut, 67-81, on Feb. 5, since then the team has won one game at home. The last time UT lost on the road was on Jan. 4, 2003, at Connecticut, 62-63, since then the team has won 16 road games. The last time the Lady Vols lost on a neutral court was against Connecticut, 68-73, in the NCAA title game on April 8, Since then, UT has not played on a neutral court. 221 WINS IN OUR LAST 241 GAMES The Lady Vols have won an amazing 221 games in their last 241 basketball contests (.919) spanning seven seasons (starting with NCAA Tournament play in 1997). UT was 6-0 in the 1997 NCAA Tourney, ran the table with a 39-0 record in , turned in a 31-3 worksheet in , a 33-4 mark in , a 31-3 overall record in , 29-5 in , 33-5 in and 19-2 in A-ROB ROCKS Lady Vol senior pivot Ashley Robinson has recorded 43 blocked shots in 21 games. The 6 5 center rejected a school-record eight shots versus Rutgers to move past Tamika Catchings (140 blocks) into third place on the career blocked shot list. Robinson has 171 career blocks to date. UNTIL RECENTLY, IT HAD BEEN AWHILE Before the Feb. 1, 2004, overtime game versus Auburn, the Dec. 14, 2003 overtime versus Stanford and the Dec. 17, 2003 OT versus DePaul, the Lady Vols had not been involved in an extra stanza game since the Jan. 4, 2003, overtime contest with Connecticut. 9 ANOTHER HUGE ACADEMIC HONOR FOR K-LAW The University & Northwest Sertoma Club of Columbus, Ohio, honored the six winners of the 17th Annual Woody Hayes National Scholar Athlete Awards on Fri., Feb. 6, Former Lady Vol and current WNBA standout Kara Lawson was the recipient of the NCAA Division I Women s Award. "Once again, our class is a strong group of nominees of which Woody would have been very proud," said Eric Parks, awards co-chair. "Our future leaders are well-rounded and well-prepared for what lies ahead." Lawson rushed back to Knoxville after the award to take her LSAT exam at UT on Sat., Feb. 7. Lawson plans on squeezing in law school in her busy schedule. The former All-American guard is the Lady Vols most highly-decorated academic athlete in the history of Women s Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Tennessee. ELY EARNED SEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK Lady Vol junior forward Shyra Ely was named the SEC Player of the Week, Jan , In Tennessee s games last week, she led the Lady Vols in scoring and rebounding in a key SEC win over Vanderbilt at home and the upset victory over top-ranked Duke in a very lively and hostile gym in Durham, N.C. Her field goal efficiency versus Vanderbilt ( ) is one of the best of her career. The 22- points she scored against the Commodores is a season-high. Nailed 7-8 critical charity tosses including 5-6 at Duke. Added three assists and three steals to go along with 18.5 ppg and 7.0 rpg for the week. She tallied double-figures scoring for the 12 th time this season while leading the Lady Vols in the scoring department for the eighth time and on the boards for the 11 th time during the campaign. GOOD NEWS FOR BUTTS Following the injury to Loree Moore, senior guard Tasha Butts moved over to the point guard slot. Against Kentucky on Jan. 29, 2004, Butts suffered an injury to her left knee with 1:39 to play and did not return to action. Prior to the Feb.1,2004 game versus #22/25 Auburn, Butts was given the go-ahead by UT team orthopaedist Dr. William T. Youmans. THE ONE VERSUS TWO MATCH-UP ACCORDING TO AP The game with Duke on Jan. 24, 2004 marked the 38th meeting of the nation s number one and number two teams according to the Associated Press. The number one team has won 21 of the previous 38 games. And it is no surprise that the Tennessee Lady Vols have participated in more than one-half 21 of those games. The Lady Vols hold a record in the No. 1 versus No. 2 encounters. Tennessee is 5-4 as the #1 team and is 5-7 when rated second. In addition, the Big Orange is 4-5 in 1 versus 2 games played in Knoxville and 6-6 in games played away or at neutral sites. SENIORS IN 1 vs. 2 The senior class is now 1-3 when #2 UT plays #1 defeating #1 Duke, 72-69, on Jan. 24, 2004 but losing to #1 Duke, on Nov. 24, 2002; #1 Connecticut, on Jan. 5, 2002 and #1 UConn again on Dec. 30, 2000, LADY VOLS HAVE DEALT FIRST LOSSES This season the Lady Vols have handed five teams their first defeat of the campaign: UT-C, La Tech, Stanford, DePaul and Oklahoma. WON YA OVER In the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Top 25 polls the weeks of Dec. 15 and Dec. 22 and Jan. 19, the Lady Vols snagged some first place votes away from top-ranked Connecticut and Duke. UT grabbed as many as two first place votes in the AP poll and one in the ESPN/USA TODAY Coaches poll before earning the #1 ranking the week of Jan. 26th. COULD SUMMITT HAVE INFLUENCED A PRESIDENTIAL HOPEFUL?? Two-hundred and thirty-six wins ago, Lady Vol Coach Pat Summitt and her Tennessee basketball team happened to be in Burlington, Vermont for the Howard Bank Classic. The trip came on the heels of UT losing the WNIT title to Louisiana Tech, 66-64, just a couple of days earlier in Ruston, La. The coach was not happy with her team s performance down the stretch in the loss, so Summitt entered the next contest with her Sports Illustrated cover look (with that famous Summitt glare that made for a memorable magazine cover when Sports Illustrated labeled her "The Wizard of Knoxville" for its feature story on March 2, 1998). The Lady Vols had a spirited game against Marquette and finally won, 83-68, in opening round action of the tournament. Back on that day, Nov. 23, 1996, marked Summitt s 600th collegiate victory. In a wonderfully hospitable gesture, then-governor of Vermont, Dr. Howard Dean, presented Summitt with a bouquet of flowers and a specially decorated cake depicting the milestone victory. Given Democratic presidential hopeful Dean s somewhat controversial, fiery, locker room -esque speech after the Iowa caucuses the other night, might he have sat too close to the action in that game seven years ago? Just a thought. DUKE WAS SOLD-OUT As of 4:00 p.m. on Jan.8, 2004, the Duke versus the Tennessee women's basketball game was declared a "sell-out" by the Duke ticket office. The #1-ranked Blue Devils and the #2-ranked Lady Vols are slated to play on Sat., Jan. 24 at 6:00 p.m. on ESPN2 at the Cameron Indoor Stadium (9,314). In December, Tennessee played in front of three consecutive sell-outs on the road at Stanford, DePaul and Oklahoma. THE VANDY GAME WAS THE 1,000TH OF HER UT CAREER Tennessee Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt reached yet another milestone when she coached in her 1000th career game versus Vanderbilt on Thurs., Jan. 22, CATCHINGS APPEARED AT THE STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS Former Lady Vol All-American and Indiana Fever forward Tamika Catchings accepted an invitation from The White House to participate in the State of the Union Address given by President George W. Bush on Jan. 20. Catchings was acknowledged as a U.S. Olympian for the 2004 Summer Olympics by the President. The WNBA's Rookie of the Year in 2002, Catchings has become one of the league's most marketable players, both on the court (runner-up for 2003 WNBA MVP honors) and in the community (operates her own basketball camps and is a regular contributor to local charities in Indianapolis). She has received the WNBA's community service award on three occasions. LADIES IN SHADES OF RED WEEK CONCLUDED Tennessee saw shades of red as they faced four consecutive teams sporting that hue in their uniforms. Shades of Red Week started with the cardinal red of the Arkansas Lady Razorbacks on Jan. 8 (an win), continued with the maroon of Mississippi State on Jan. 11 (a win), the garnet of South Carolina (an win) and concluded with the crimson of Alabama (a win). SINCE THE LOSS TO TEXAS, GOOD NEWS MOSTLY In UT s seven games since the loss to Texas on Dec. 28, 2002, the Lady Vols have ratcheted it up a bit in every statistical category. The Lady Vols are shooting.470 from the field and holding the opposition to just.306. The trey numbers have been solid at 40 percent while the opposition has connected at just 27 percent. Tennessee is much-improved at the charity stripe knocking in 70 percent. UT continues to outrebound the opposition 43.5 to 32.5 for a +11 margin. Finally, the Lady Vols are outscoring their opponents by almost 21 points per game, 73.9 ppg to 53.0 ppg. The Lady Vols even held two opponents (Old Dominion and Arkansas) to just 43.0 ppg. STILL GOT GAME, SORTA

10 The Tennessee Lady Vols welcomed their basketball alumni back to the Knoxville campus on Jan. 18th when they faced Alabama. The ever-popular Alumni Orange and White game took place immediately following the Lady Vols game with the Tide and spanned four decades of players. Dr. Barbara Brimi (mid 1960s circa) dressed out for the Orange who defeated the White, The Orange was led in scoring by Shelley Sexton Collier and Karla Horton Douglass who each tallied eight points. Kristen Clement Blue added seven points and dished four assists. The White team was led in scoring by recent grad Kara Lawson with 11 points. Lady Vol assistant coach Nikki Caldwell chipped in five points as the next highest scorer. Fellow assistant coach Holly Warlick was held to just a deuce while playing fir the losing White squad. SUMMITT AND BOOST-HER CLUB HONORED The Tennessee Lady Vols honored Coach Pat Summitt and the Boost-Her Club presidents at The Salute to Excellence -- the Women s Athletics Department annual fundraiser on Jan. 17, The black tie and tennis shoes affair was its usual great success raising money for the Lady Vol Scholarship Fund. One of the hottest auction items was the Fried Green Tomato Dinner hosted by Pat Summitt and UT Women s Athletics Director Joan Cronan. Two lucky individuals walked away with a dinner each at $10,000!! That s some tomatoes!! And they re green to boot. AWH, UCONN, A TIE IS LIKE KISSING YA SISTA And in this case, your sister is Tennessee. Tennessee and Connecticut have found yet another way to be linked in NCAA women s basketball history as the Huskies fell short of breaking the Lady Vols 69- game NCAA homecourt winning streak against Duke on Jan. 3, The Dukies roared back to take a win with a buzzer-beater trey. So, Tennessee and Connecticut are co-holders of the NCAA Women s longest homecourt winning streak at 69-games. DID YOU KNOW UConn s previously longest home win streak was 54 and ended with a loss against Tennessee on Jan. 10, 1999, in Gampel. The Huskies 69-game winning streak at home (both Gampel and Civic Center) dated back to a loss versus Tennessee on Feb.2, Tennessee is 2-1 at Gampel but has never won in the Hartford Civic Center Here s a few of Tennessee s streaky facts: The record spanned from Feb. 1, 1991 until Jan. 2, 1996 UT s streak was snapped by, guess who?????????? Connecticut on Jan. 6, 1996, in front of 10,584 brave Lady Vols fans who made the trek despite a freak snow-ice storm in Knoxville that day, 40% of the 69 games were contested against ranked opponents a dozen wins came over teams ranked in the Top Lady Vol players participated in the 69-game homecourt winning streak Former Lady Vol All-American Dana Johnson, a 6-2 center from Baltimore, MD played in 57 of the 69 games in the streak, Olympian and All-American Nikki McCray, a 5-11 guard from Collierville, TN, recorded 35 double-doubles during the 69- game streak. K-LAW SCORED ANOTHER HUGE HONOR Former Lady Vol All-America Kara Lawson ( ) was honored on Jan. 11, 2004, in Nashville, Tenn., with an NCAA Today s Top VIII Award. Lawson, who was one of 10-finalists for the 2003 NCAA Woman of the Year Award, was recognized at the NCAA Convention at the Gaylord Opryland Hotel in Nashville during the annual Honors Dinner. In all, eight studentathletes were tabbed for the prestigious honor that is based on athletic and academic achievement, character and leadership. Lawson is the most-highly allaround decorated student-athlete in Lady Vol basketball history. Immediately following the game at Mississippi State, the Lady Vol staff traveled to Nashville for Kara s award presentation STREAK STARTED WITH THE ODU W Last season, the Lady Vols went on a 19- game winning streak which started with a victory over Old Dominion on Jan. 7, UT s next loss didn t come until the SEC Tournament finals against LSU on Mar. 9, 2003 (a loss). MADE THE GRADE Five Lady Vols, almost one-half of the squad, earned Dean s List honors for the Fall 2003 semester led by rookie forward Sidney Spencer, Hoover, Ala., with a perfect 4.0 GPA. Spencer was joined by graduating senior Courtney McDaniel (3.0 GPA), sophomores Shanna Zolman (3.88 GPA) and Tye sha Fluker (3.3 GPA) and fellow frosh Dominique Redding (3.25 GPA). Spencer, who also attended the summer session, has a cumulative 4.0 GPA, as well. HERE S STOP AND GO During the TCU game on Jan. 2, 2004, the clock stopped 117 times during the course of the game. Talk about carpel tunnel syndrome. When all the media timeouts (8), team timeouts (9), fouls (42), turnovers (45), jump balls (13) and trips to the free throw line were figured in the count came back at 117 times for the stoppage of the clock. The old record for the Lady Vols was set last season when the clock stopped 93 times in the Arkansas game. I know it doesn t mean much, HIT A RANKED STRETCH Tennessee hit a stretch of games against ranked teams, as the Lady Vols took on seven ranked opponents over a grueling nine-game stretch. The line-up included: #17 Notre Dame (83-59 win), #10/11 Louisiana Tech (85-65 win), #25 Rutgers (59-49 win), #6/5 Stanford (70-66 OT win), at #13/15 Oklahoma (71-55 win), #5 Texas (60-70 loss), and at #19 TCU (74-66 win). The only non-ranked teams were road games at always -dangerous and upsetminded DePaul (96-89 OT win) on Dec. 17 and George Washington on Dec. 30 (a win). The Blue Demons are now ranked in the Top 25 while the Colonials have received votes in the top 25 polls this season. SUMMITT MADE A STOP AT THE SMITHSONIAN Tennessee Head Coach Pat Summitt had a Tues., Dec. 30, 2003, morning meeting with Dr. Brent D. Glass, Director of the Smithsonian s National Museum of American History (Behring Center) in Washington, D.C. Summitt is being considered for a position on the Smithsonian s Board. DO THE MATH Against Stanford on Dec. 14, Tennessee produced its worst field goal shooting game of the season to date (.397). Three nights later, against DePaul, the Lady Vols knocked in 54 percent of its shots the best field goal totals of the season. In the very next game against Oklahoma, UT recorded a new season low FG% of.377 and followed that with a pitiful.394 in the loss to Texas. LIFE ON THE ROAD On Dec. 28, after a brief pit stop at home where the Lady Vols suffered their first loss of the season to #5-ranked Texas (60-70), the team was back on the road for a pair of games. On Tues. Dec. 30, UT defeated George Washington Univ., 65-51, in Washington, D.C., and closed-out the road swing at #19-ranked TCU on Jan. 2, 2004, registering a victory in a nearcapacity gym on the Ft. Worth campus. STREAK STOPPED AT 24 In the loss against Texas on Dec.28, 2003, the Lady Vols were attempting to extend their home court winning streak to 25 games which would have tied for the fifth longest in Tennessee history. Ironically, UT s most recent win streak began after Texas defeated the Lady Vols on Feb. 12, However, on Dec. 28, the then-fifth-ranked Longhorns once again
