TCU is off to the best start in school history. IN OUR LAST GAME Nationally ranked fifth, after suffering its first loss of the season, the Tennessee Lady Vols traveled to George Washington University and hung a loss on the Colonials on Dec. 30, A near-capacity crowd (4,327) saw a new UT line-up take the court as LaToya Davis and Brittany Jackson replaced Shanna Zolman and Tasha Butts in the starting five. Interestingly enough, Jackson (who replaced Butts as a starter) and Butts paced the Lady Vols in scoring chipping in 16 points each. Butts 16 point outburst tied her career high. The duo were the only UT players in doublefigures as junior forward Shyra Ely, UT s leading scorer, failed to post double-digit scoring for the first time this season and tallied just a single point in 22 minutes. Junior guard Loree Moore had the best all-around performance for the Lady Vols tossing in seven points, grabbing a teamhigh eight rebounds while snagging four steals. The game started slowly with the Lady Vols edging out to a five point, 14-9 lead with 12 minutes to play in the opening stanza. A couple of treys by Butts advanced UT s lead to 10 points, with four minutes to play before the half. At the break, UT led UT led comfortably in the second half and held a commanding lead with 10:23 to play after another Butts trey. On the night, UT shot just 42 percent but connected on 53 percent of threepointers (8-15) and hit 75 percent of its charity tosses. UT also outrebounded GWU, Ashley Robinson rejected three shots on the night. TENNESSEE LADY VOLS NCAA CHAMPIONS

Only two teams have claimed victories over UT Cincinnati (three times) and Memphis (once). Tennessee traveled to C-USA member DePaul on Dec. 17, 2003, and came away with a OT victory. DePAUL IS FOR REAL The Lady Vols had their collective hands full on Dec. 17, 2003, when Tennessee met C-USA bully DePaul in Chicago, Ill. The Blue Demons led at the half and had led by as many as nine points, before the Lady Vols prevailed in overtime, C-USA AND SUMMITT TIED IN HISTORY TOGETHER Last season, Pat Summitt was in line for victory number 800 when Doug Bruno brought his C-USA DePaul team to Knoxville. UT recorded a win over #25 DePaul for Summitt s 800 th win. A gracious Bruno and his team posed for pictures with Summitt and her Lady Vols in celebration of the milestone victory. CAREER STATS VS. With the win, UT moved its overall mark to 21-3 on the season.. The Lady Vols controlled the boards on this night 38-32, dished out 22 assists, including seven by senior Kara Lawson, and shot 45.2% from the field. Lawson led four Tennessee players in double figures with 20 points on 8-of-13 shooting, while Gwen Jackson posted 14 tallies and Tasha Butts and Courtney McDaniel each totaled 11 points. Butts tallied the second double-double of both the season and her career with an 11-point, 11-rebound, five-assist performance in 26 minutes of action. To open the contest, it looked like a Lady Vol rout in the making as a UT long-range assault behind two Lawson threes, a Loree Moore trey and a Butts triple boosted Tennessee to an early 14-2 lead with 16:19 to play in the opening half. However, TCU was here to play as a 12-2 run over the next 4:19 drew the Lady Frogs back to within UT extended the advantage back to seven points twice in the first half at following two McDaniel free throws, and at after a McDaniel lay-in, before a late 8-2 run drew TCU to within only one point at the break. To open the second frame, Gwen Jackson and Lawson, who each accounted for 12 second-half points, scored as UT took a lead with 18:08 remaining. The Lady Vol advantage grew to as many as eight before TCU cut the gap down to only three at That s when a key 7-0 Tennessee run behind two consecutive Lawson buckets extended UT s advantage to with 12:02 to play. The Lady Frogs wouldn t go away and managed to cut the deficit to only four at after a Candace Baldwin lay-in with 6:04 left. However, a 12-2 UT run, mostly from the free throw line, helped the Orange & White outlast the stubborn TCU squad, Tennessee forced 22 TCU turnovers, shot 51.6% from the field in the second half and won the game at the free throw line by hitting 24 free throws in 33 attempts, while TCU went 15-of-19. Arizona AP POLL NOTES The Associated Press women s Top 25 basketball poll released on Jan. 1, 2001, marked the 400th appearance by the Lady Vols. Since the poll was started in 1976, UT has failed to appear in just 14 polls through the years. Currently, UT has been ranked in 326 consecutive polls and since the season and the Lady Vols have been in the top 10 for all but one poll. UT is the only team to have been ranked every year for the last 28 years of the poll. UT has appeared at least once per season over the poll's history. LAST TIME WE PLAYED AT TCU, WE SLEPT ON THE FLOOR IN THE MAUI AIRPORT CONCOURSE Rambling musings It was Nov. 25, 2000, and the Lady Vol travel party was ready to head back to the Mainland after a successful stint at the Maui Invitational. Tennessee had demolished Illinois, , earlier that afternoon. Junior center Michelle Snow had the women s basketball world buzzing after performing the first dunk in a televised game. Senior Tamika Catchings (Duncanville, Texas) and rookie Ashley Robinson (Grand Prairie, Texas) were anxious to board the American Airlines flight to Dallas, Texas. A game on Nov. 27 at TCU was next up and the Texas girls were looking forward to playing in front of family and friends. After a 16-hour delay leaving Maui and sleeping all over the concourse/floor, the weary Tennessee team finally arrived at the DFW Airport in the wee hours of Monday morning. Tickets for family and friends were hard to come by as the contest was sold-out in advance and tickets were tighter than a Final Four match-up between Tennessee and UConn. OUR ONLY MEETING AT TCU A road-weary #2 ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteer basketball team woke-up midway through the opening minutes of their game on Nov. 27, 2000, in a jam-packed Daniel-Meyer Coliseum in Ft. Worth, Texas, and downed the home standing Texas Christian University Horned Frogs, UT had arrived in town in the wee hours of Sunday night/monday morning after being stranded in the Maui airport overnight. TCU didn t care as they opened the game with a threepointer much to the delight of the 7,262 fans who set a new TCU attendance record bettering the old mark of 7,260 set in 1983 when the #1 Houston Cougar men s team came to town. The Frogs and Lady Vols traded baskets in the first 10 minutes of the game before TCU edged out to a lead with 8:58 to go. Fortunately, the Lady Vols got a wake-up call from sophomore April McDivitt. In a little over three minutes, McDivitt scored 11 points (including three treys) as UT forged a turnaround with 2:39 left in the opening stanza. UT led at the half but shot a dismal 39% from the field. In the second stanza, the homecoming queens Tamika Catchings and Ashley Robinson put on a show for the home folks. TCU cut the lead to eight (56-48 with 12:36 to go) but a flurry of buckets quickly gave UT an 18 point lead (66-48) with under 10 minutes to go. On the evening, four Lady Vols reached double-figure scoring led by McDivitt s 14 points off the bench. Also in extra digits were Catchings with 13 points, Robinson and Semeka Randall with 11 each. Catchings just missed a triple-double with nine rebounds and nine assists. The Lady Vols had their worst shooting night of the season connecting on just 38% of their field goal tries. UT outrebounded TCU AGAINST SCHOOLS IN THE STATE OF TEXAS--- Tennessee has taken on five teams all-time from the state of Texas and produced a overall record. Previously, Tennessee has faced Stephen F. Austin, Texas, Texas A&M and Texas Tech. The Lady Vols have a 3-3 record all-time against SFA and faced them last in The two UT s in orange and white have battled to a record over the years with Tennessee holding the upper hand against the Lady Longhorns from Texas. The two schools met first in 1978 and have played every year since. Tennessee dropped another heartbreaker to Texas on Dec. 28, 2003, The Lady Vols have faced the Aggies from Texas A&M just once, back 1997 in the Northern Lights Invitational in Anchorage, Alaska. One of the more recent opponents from the state of Texas has been Texas Tech. UT has a 4-0 record over the Red Raiders and last met TTU on Mar. 27, 2000, to earn a trip to the NCAA Final Four. In the championship game of the NCAA Mideast Regionals, Tennessee turned Texas Tech back, 57-44, to earn the trip to Philadelphia, Pa. SUMMITT MAKES A STOP AT THE SMITHSONIAN Tennessee Head Coach Pat Summitt had a Tues., Dec. 30, 2003, morning meeting with Dr. Brent D. Glass, Director of the Smithsonian s National Museum of American History (Behring Center) in Washington, D.C. Summitt is being considered for a position on the Smithsonian s Board. HOME, SWEET, HOME? The Tennessee Lady Vols rarely lose at home. In fact, since moving to the Thompson-Boling Arena for the season, UT has lost two games in one season just four times. UT lost two games in TBA during the inaugural campaign, the season, the season, and the season. The 12 all-time losses at Thompson-Boling Arena have come at the hands of just six teams: Connecticut (2002, 2000, 1996), Louisiana Tech (1999, 1989), Georgia (1996, 1991), Texas (2003, 2002, 1987), Stanford (1996) and Auburn (1988). LADY VOLS STREAK STOPPED AT 24 IN A ROW In the loss against Texas on Dec.28, 2003, the Lady Vols were attempting to extend their home court winning streak to 25 games which would have tied for the fifth longest in Tennessee history. Ironically, UT s most recent win streak began after Texas defeated the Lady Vols on Feb. 12, However, on Dec. 28, the then-fifth-ranked Longhorns once again snapped the Lady TENNESSEE LADY VOLS NCAA CHAMPIONS

5 Vols homecourt winning streak at 24- games with a win. It marked UT s 12th all-time loss in Thompson-Boling Area with three of the defeats coming at the hands of Texas. OK SOLD-OUT, TOO The Tennessee vs. Oklahoma game became an official sell-out on Dec. 18 at 5 p.m. The 12,080 who showed up went into the record books as the largest crowd ever to gather for an OU women s basketball game, replacing the old record of 10,713 established during the season when the Sooners hosted Connecticut. It was also the largest crowd ever to witness a women s game in the State of Oklahoma. That distinction formerly belonged to the 2002 NCAA Tournament game in which OU hosted Villanova. Some 11,245 attended that game. BACK-TO-BACK-TO-BACK Tennessee s game at Stanford was a standing room sold-out crowd of 7,391 on Dec. 14. The Lady Vols followed that game with an advance sold-out, SRO crowd at DePaul of 3,500 and concluded the road swing with an advance sell-out at Oklahoma with 12,080. WHAT HONEYMOON? The Tennessee Lady Vols opened the home portion of the schedule taking on four consecutive teams in Thompson-Boling Arena. Chattanooga visited on Nov. 23 and was dealt an loss. Number 17-ranked Notre Dame arrived a week later and lost, 83-59, while #10/11 Louisiana Tech followed the following Sunday and lost Number 25-ranked Rutgers concluded UT s home stand honeymoon with a loss. The Lady Vols are concluded its first road swing of the season traveling to #6/5 Stanford (70-66 OT win), DePaul (96-89 OT win) and #13/15 Oklahoma (71-55 win). BACK-TO-BACK HEART ATTACKS Tennessee s back-to-back overtime wins over Stanford, 70-66, and DePaul, 96-89, on the current road trip have occurred before. Back-to-back OT wins that is --- In 1996, Tennessee recorded consecutive overtime wins on Feb. 15 at South Carolina, a OT victory and in the next game on Feb. 18, a OT triumph over Auburn in Knoxville. Tennessee has played in a total of 33 overtime games all-time and sports a record in extra stanza affairs. UT WAS DEMONIZED DePaul s stingy first half defense prevented Tennessee from gaining any kind of first half lead against the Blue Demons. Thusly, DU is the first team in the season to keep the Lady Vols out of the leaders column in the opening stanza. DO THE MATH Against Stanford on Dec. 14, Tennessee produced its worst field goal shooting game of the season (.397). Three nights later, against DePaul, the Lady Vols knocked in 54 percent of its shots the best field goal totals of the season. In the very next game against Oklahoma, UT recorded a new season low FG% of.377. BROKE THEIR WIN STREAK Tennessee broke DePaul s 18-game home court winning streak which was tied for fifthlongest currently. The Lady Vols had their 24-game home court winning streak broken by Texas. LADY VOLS HAVE DEALT FIRST LOSSES This season the Lady Vols have handed five teams their first defeat of the campaign: UT-C, La Tech, Stanford, DePaul and Oklahoma. WON YA OVER In the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today Top 25 polls the weeks of Dec. 15 and Dec. 22, the Lady Vols snagged some first place votes away from top-ranked Connecticut. UT grabbed two first place votes in the AP poll and one in the Coaches poll after the win at Oklahoma. MORE FROM MOORE Junior point guard Loree Moore turned in the first double-double of her career with an 11- point and 10-rebound performance against DePaul on Dec. 17. Moore also added five assists and two steals in 35 minutes. DOUBLE-DIGIT WINS Besides Louisiana Tech, with 17 wins over UT, only three other teams have recorded double-digit victories against the Lady Vols during the Pat Summitt era of Lady Vol basketball. Georgia has claimed 13 wins in 44 meetings, Connecticut has registered 11 wins in 17 meetings, and Texas 10 wins in 25 meetings with the Lady Vols. HOW MANY TIMES HAS TENNESSEE GIVEN UP OVER 80 POINTS??? Fortunately, not too often. DePaul s 89 points tallied on Dec. 17, 2003, was the highest point total scored on the Tennessee Lady Vols since Mar. 1, UT and LSU were in a basket-for-basket shoot-out in the SEC Tournament semifinals as the Lady Vols won in overtime. Since 1999, the Lady Vols have been tagged for 80+ points by the opposition on just eight occasions (including DePaul). Connecticut leads the scoring fest with four games in the 80s, while DePaul, LSU, Florida and Xavier have turned in one 80+ game each. In these games, UT was 4-4 when the opposition scored 80+ points. Points Opponent Date UT W/L SCORE 89 DePaul W Connecticut W Connecticut L LSU L Connecticut L Connecticut W Xavier L Florida W 92-80) HIT A RANKED STRETCH Tennessee hit a stretch of games against ranked teams, as the Lady Vols took on seven ranked opponents over a grueling nine-game stretch. The line-up included: #17 Notre Dame (83-59 win), #10/11 Louisiana Tech (85-65 win), #25 Rutgers (59-49 win), #6/5 Stanford (70-66 OT win), at #13/15 Oklahoma (71-55 win), #5 Texas (60-70 loss), and at #19 TCU on Jan. 2. The only non-ranked teams were road games at always-dangerous and upsetminded DePaul (96-89 OT win) on Dec. 17 and George Washington on Dec. 30 (a win). The Blue Demons are now ranked #20 while the Colonials have received votes in the top 25 polls this season. LUGGAGE LIZARDS UT s continuous 10-day road swing Dec was the longest continental United States junket in Lady Vol history. It is two days longer than a Dec.-Jan trip. 6 McDANIEL GRADUATES Tennessee s December schedule was a little crazy as the Lady Vols wrappedup exams for the Fall semester. One Lady Vol grinning large was senior Courtney McDaniel who graduated on Dec. 14, ahead of her class by one semester. She begins work on her master s degree starting in January She missed commencement ceremonies due to the game at #6/5 Stanford as both activities tipped off at 3:00 p.m. ET. McDaniel became the seventh Lady Vol in the last decade to graduate ahead of her classmates and conclude her Lady Vol eligibility in grad school. ELY EARNS SEC PLAYER OF THE WEEK Lady Vol junior forward Shyra Ely was named the SEC Player of the Week, Dec In the Lady Vols only game last week, Ely posted her first doubledouble of the season tossing in 17 points and grabbing 11 rebounds in the win over #10/11-ranked Louisiana Tech. Ely is listed on both the 2004 Wade Trophy and Wooden Award watch lists for 2004 Player of the Year honors. A-ROB ROCKS Lady Vol senior pivot Ashley Robinson has already recorded 26 blocked shots in eight games. The 6 5 center rejected a school-record eight shots versus Rutgers to move past Tamika Catchings (140 blocks) into third place on the career blocked shot list. Robinson has 156 career blocks to date. BEFORE YOU KNOW IT, IT WILL BE 1000 Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt will coach in her 1000th career game when Vanderbilt visits Knoxville on Thurs. Jan. 22, LADY VOL STREAKS The last time the Lady Vols lost at home was against Texas, 60-70, on Dec. 28, since then, UT has not played at home.
