2 VIRGINIA TECH WOMEN S BASKETBALL NOTES The Series vs. Longwood The Hokies and Lancers meet tonight for only the fourth time since Virginia Tech s first year of varsity basketball in and for the first time in 25 years. Tech leads the series 2-1. The Hokies won the first meeting, 59-47, on Jan. 25, 1977 and won the last meeting, 81-55, on Feb. 15, Tech is 2-0 vs. Longwood in Blacksburg, Va. while Longwood holds a 1-0 advantage in Farmville, Va. Beth Dunkenberger is 0-0 vs. Longwood while Shirley Duncan, in her 23rd year in Farmville,Va., is 0-0 vs. the Hokies. Duncan will retire effective Dec. 31 and associate head coach Nikki Atkinson will serve as interim head coach for the remainder of the season. Longwood (2-1) Jan. 25, 1977 hw Feb. 7, 1978 al Feb. 15, 1979 hw Tech s Last Game Riviera Maya, Mexico (12/20/05) -- Virginia Tech, behind a fast-break offense and the outstanding play of Dawn Chriss and Kirby Copeland, defeated Texas Tech in the Caribbean Classic being played in the Soul Ballroom at the Aventura Spa Palace. Tech improved to 10-0 with the win while Texas Tech fell to 4-6. The Hokies victory in the Caribbean Classic, which does not declare a champion since the matchups were pre-determined, marked the fourth consecutive in-season tournament where Tech has gone undefeated. Earlier this year, the Hokies won the SMU Hoops for the Cure Classic and last season won their own Lady Luck Classic and the Duel in the Desert tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. Tech defeated the same two teams, Western Michigan and Texas Tech, in the Las Vegas event that it defeated this season in the Caribbean Classic. Chriss led three Hokies in double figures with 20 points followed by Copeland with 19 points while Megan Finnerty added 11. After leading by as many as 14 points in the first half, the Hokies found themselves in a tight struggle leading only after the Lady Raiders Erin Grant hit a jumper with just under 11 minutes left in the contest. Tech responded with a 13-4 run over the next five minutes to lead Texas Tech would get no closer than five points the rest of the way. Surprisingly, free throw shooting proved to be the key to the win down the stretch. Entering the game shooting under 60 percent as a team, Tech struggled mightly against the Lady Raiders connecting on only six of its first 19 attempts in the game. However, the Hokies stepped up when it counted most and nailed nine of the last ten attempts, including the last seven, to ice the win. Carrie Mason, who sealed the win over Western Michigan on the tournament s first day with two free throws in the final seven seconds, nailed all four attempts in the final 40 seconds. Tech jumped out to an early 21-7 advantage using long outlet passes after Lady Raider missed shots to convert easy layups on the offensive end. Texas Tech battled back to pull within at the intermission and made the early push in the second half and closed to within one but never led in the contest. (2/15/79) - Virginia Tech used a balanced scoring attack and a tough man-to-man defense to defeat Longwood College, The Lady Hokies grabbed an early 20-5 lead to open the game and were never challenged in the contest with the 26-point margin of victory being Tech s largest lead of the evening. Tech (5-13) was led in scoring by Sandy Berry with a game-high 12 points. Kim Albany and Pauline Landes added 10 each. Cindy Landon led Longwood (7-12) with 12 points while Robin Hungate chipped in with nine. The Hokies held a commanding advantage on the boards led by MaryAnn Clary with nine rebounds while limiting the Lancers to only 31.7 percent (20-63) from the field. Percentage: Abbey Freese (12-43) FT Percentage: Cassandra Smith (16-19) Amber Sims (12-17) Season Tourneys Following the victory over Texas Tech in the Caribbean Classic, the Hokies are 30-8 in regular season tournaments in the last eight seasons including victories in its own holiday tournament the last seven years. Tech won the SMU Hoops for the Cure tournament this season and won both games at the Caribbean Classic. Overall, since the season, the Hokies are in tournaments which are held during the regular season. Last year, Tech lost at 14th-ranked Minnesota in the Subway Classic Championship game, and defeated No. 12 Texas Tech, in overtime to win the Duel in the Desert championship in Las Vegas, Nev. Classic Hokies In the last eight years, Virginia Tech is 15-1 in its own holiday tournament. The only loss during this period was a loss to Siena in the championship game of the 1997 Diamond Club Classic. Since then, the Hokies have won 14 straight games by an average of 26.3 points. Tech s victory margin in first round of the tournament in the last eight years is 29.8 points and the Hokies have won the last seven championship games by an average of 18.6 points. 4 VIRGINIA TECH WOMEN S BASKETBALL NOTES The Honorable Gardin Junior Kerri Gardin was an Honorable Mention selection to the 2005 ACC All-Conference team. Gardin averaged a double-double in league games with 12.2 points and 10.1 rebounds and leads the ACC in rebounding this season with 10.6 boards per game. She was second last year in conference games in rebounds averaging 10.1 per game and her 21 rebounds against Virginia was the fifth most ever in an ACC league contest. Gardin concluded the conference schedule ranked seventh in field goal percentage (.490), fifth in blocks (1.43), second in offensive rebounds (4.43) and third in defensive rebounds (5.64). In 14 conference games, she scored in double figures nine times, had eight double-digit rebounding efforts, and five double-doubles. Tech in the NCAA Tourney With last year s appearance, the Hokies have now earned eight NCAA Tournament bids and have a record of 7-8. Tech s most successful experience in the NCAAs occurred in 1999, when the Hokies reached the Sweet 16. While Tech is 6-2 in first round games and has won six of the last seven, the second round has not been as kind, seeing the Hokies post a 1-5 mark. Tech is 1-1 in second round games in Cassell Coliseum, defeating Auburn in the 1999 tournament and losing in 2004 versus Penn State. The Hokies are 4-1 in first round games played on a neutral floor and 2-1 in first round games in Blacksburg. Ten of Tech s 12 losses last season were to teams selected to the 2005 NCAA Tournament and the Hokies were 6-10 against the 2005 tournament field. Postseason Experience Last season s appearance in the NCAA Tournament marked the eighth consecutive season the program has participated in postseason play and the 10th time in the last 12 years. The appearance last year was also the first time Tech has received three straight NCAA bids in the program s 29-year history. The Hokies had previously received back-to-back bids following the and seasons, the and seasons, and the most recent and campaigns. Of Tech s 12 losses, six were by five points or less and three came in overtime. The Hokies and Florida State Seminoles played a total of five overtimes periods in their two meetings, with FSU winning both tight contests. Tech defeated No. 12 Texas Tech, in overtime, to win the Duel in the Desert Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev., in December before dropping the first of three overtime decisions with a loss at home versus NC State. The Hokies dropped a couple of three-point games against arch-rival Virginia and were defeated in the opening round of the ACC Tournament by Wake Forest. Tech lost by one, 79-78, to DePaul in the NCAA First Round in College Park, Md. Carrie Mason leads Tech with 32 assists and only 16 turnovers this season Cruising to victory ( ) After last season s near-misses, Tech has controlled its first ten opponents this year winning by an average of 11.8 points a game. The Hokies closest game was a four-point, 69-65, win against Western Michigan on Dec. 19 and the 26-point win against SMU (87-61) is the largest margin of victory. Tech, ranked 11th nationally last year in scoring, is averaging 70.4 points and has scored 70 or more points in five of its ten games this season.

5 VIRGINIA TECH WOMEN S BASKETBALL NOTES 5 Experienced Cast Returns This year s edition of the Hokies will be a veteran group featuring five seniors, three juniors, and four freshmen. Kerri Gardin (6-1, Sr., F, Morganton, N.C.), an All-ACC honorable mention last season who averaged a double-double (12.2 points, 10.1 rebounds) in conference games, was second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.1 points, and led the team in rebounds averaging 8.0 boards. Gardin tied a school and Cassell Coliseum record with 21 rebounds against Virginia last season, and had seven double-doubles during the year. Additionally, she was second in blocks (29), and set a career-high with eight assists versus Richmond. Dawn Chriss (6-1, Sr., G, Hilcrest Heights, Md.) is back after concluding her junior season on a high note. Chriss averaged 20.2 points and 6.0 rebounds in her last five games, including a 33-point outburst at Florida State. The 33 points were the second most points by a Hokie in a single game, and her 14 field goals tied a Tech single-game mark. Chriss shot 57.8 percent (41-71) over those final five contests, and led Tech in scoring in four of the games. She ended the year as the Hokies third leading scorer (11.0) and rebounder (4.2). The offense will once again be directed by Carrie Mason (5-7, Sr., G, Seneca, Pa.), who has started 90 of 92 games in her Tech career. Mason was named to the Subway Classic, Duel in the Desert, and Lady Luck Classic All-tournment teams last season, and needs only one point to become the 17th member of the Tech 1,000-point club. She led the team in assists (98), three-point field goals (45), and minutes played (32.9). Kirby Copeland (5-10, Jr., G, Morrow, Ga.), Roshana Jackson (6-1, Sr., F, Norton, Va.), and Britney Anderson (6-0, Jr., F, Blacksburg, Va.) were part-time starters last year. Copeland started 13 games and battled mono during the middle portion of the season. She had a career-high seven steals in the home-opener against Alabama and tied her career-high with 15 points versus DePaul in the NCAA Tournament. Copeland ended the season fifth on the team in scoring (8.5 points) and third in steals (38). Anderson started 10 games and had her best outing with a career-high 18 points at Florida State. She had 10 double-digit scoring games and tied a career-high with eight rebounds against Southern Miss. Jackson, out for an indefinite period after suffering a left patella fracture, started 14 contests and paired with Erin Gibson to give Tech an imposing presence in the paint. A junior college transfer, Jackson was third on the team in blocks (17) and had 24 steals. Other returnees include Megan Finnerty (6-3, Sr., Atlanta, Ga.), Nare Diawara (6-6, Jr., C, Bamako, Mali) and Brittany Cook (6-0, r-fr., G, Narrows, Va.). Finnerty saw action in 28 games last year, and had a career-high 12 points against Wake Forest and a career-high seven rebounds in the season-opener versus Valparaiso. Diawara saw playing time in 18 contests, but missed 11 games due to a back injury. She was instrumental in the upset over No. 12 Texas Tech in the Duel in the Desert title game with a career-high 11 points. Cook, a McDonald s All-American nominee, missed last season due to knee surgery. She averaged 28.9 points and 10.6 rebounds in leading Mercer Christian Academy to a 23-4 record, and to the West Virginia state final. In the championship tournament, Cook averaged 30.3 points, and set a state single-game record for free throws made with an 18-of-18 performance. The Hokies seek their fourth consecutive NCAA bid Elite Company The Virginia Tech women s basketball program has enjoyed tremendous success the last seven years. Entering the season, Tech ranked 30th in terms of victories and is joined on the list by the nation s top women s basketball teams. 1. The season marked the Hokies seventh straight and tenth 20+ win season in 12 years, which was snapped with last year s mark. Tech has had ten losing seasons and two breakeven campaigns. The Hokies best season was the 28-3 mark in 1999, while Tech s most losses in a season were the 21 defeats in

Overall, Tech has a record of finished her junior season with 1,126 career points. Biggs also was named in overtime games, 5-6 in home games, 4-7 in games played on the road to the district and region all-academic teams. Biggs selected the Hokies and 4-2 at neutral locations. A Commonwealth Occurence Grey, a 5-8 guard from Windsor, Conn., averaged 15.5 points and 8.0 In the last nine seasons, the Hokies have posted a 37-9 overall record rebounds for Vin Cian Farani at Windsor H.S.. She was named first-team against teams that hail from the Commenwealth of Virginia. During the all-state by the Connecticut High School Coaches Association as well as period, Tech is 21-1 at home and 16-8 on the road against in-state to the Hartford Courant and New Haven Register all-state first teams. 7 VIRGINIA TECH WOMEN S BASKETBALL NOTES 7 Mason Joins the Club Senior point guard Carrie Mason became the 17th member of the Virginia Tech 1,000-point club with 20 points against James Madison in the Hokies season-opener. She is second on the team in scoring (11.9) and has connected on 14 treys in the first ten games and now has 152 in her career, which ranks second on the Tech career list behind Sarah Hicks ( ) 157. Mason is sixth in the ACC in assist/turnover ratio at 2.00 having handed out 32 assists with only 16 turnovers. She ranks seventh on the Tech career assists list with 315. Last season, she had a career-high nine assists on Feb. 24 at No. 23/22 Maryland after opening the season with a then career-high eight handouts against Valparaiso, and six more versus Minnesota. For her efforts in the latter two contests, she was named to the Subway Basketball Classic all-tournament team. Mason was also named to the Duel in the Desert and Lady Luck Classic all-tournament teams. For the year, Mason averaged 10.4 points and 3.4 assists, and led the team in three-point field goals (45) and minutes played (32.9). She was second the ACC in overall 3-pt. field goal percentage (.417), 30th in scoring, third in free throw percentage (.831), and tenth in 3-pt. field goals made per game (1.55). She tied a career-high with four treys at North Carolina. In , Mason was named the Paradise Jam Most Valuable Player after leading the Hokies to the championship. She was second on the team in scoring (11.5), first in three-point field goals (51), third in career three-point field goals (93), first in steals (58) and first in minutes played (35.8). Mason was named to the BIG EAST Conference All-Rookie team and was selected on one occasion as the BIG EAST Conference Rookie of the Week ( ). She was an honorable mention selection to the womenscollegehoops.com AllAmerican Freshman team. In , Mason came through in the clutch for the Hokies on several occasions hitting game-winning shots against Notre Dame (53-50) in the regular season and against Georgia Tech (61-59) in the 2003 NCAA First Round as well as nailing a three-pointer to force a game at Miami into overtime. Dawn Chriss Carrie Mason Dawn of a New Era Dawn Chriss registered her second career double-double with 12 points and 12 rebounds against Evansville. The 12 boards tied her career-high. Chriss led Tech with 20 points in the win over Texas Tech at the Caribbean Classic. She is third on the team in scoring averaging 9.4 points and is second in rebounding with 5.8 rebounds through the first ten games of the season. Chriss, who averaged 11.0 points last year, erupted for a career-high 33 points in the triple-overtime loss at Florida State. The 33 points were the second most points by a Tech player, falling one point shy of Renee Dennis 34 versus Memphis State (2-7-87). Her 14 field goals also tied Dennis for most in a game. Dennis accomplished the feat twice, in the aforementiond Memphis State game and against Florida State (1-3-87). In her final five games last year, Chriss averaged 20.2 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.0 steals, 2.0 assists and shot 57.8 percent (41-71) from the field. Chriss came into her own during her sophomore season after averaging only 3.2 points and 1.8 rebounds during her freshman campaign. She was second on the team in field goal percentage (.482), third in scoring (10.2), second in blocks (28), first in free throw percentage (.837) and third in rebounding (4.7). 8 VIRGINIA TECH WOMEN S BASKETBALL NOTES Gardin Party seeing Double Kerri Gardin, first in the ACC this season in rebounding and 11th in scoring, recorded her 15th career double-double against Western Michigan with 15 points and 10 boards. She opened the season with a solid 15-point, eight-rebound effort in the win over JMU. In Tech s ODU victory, Gardin missed most of the first half due to foul trouble before leading the Hokies to victory with 14 second-half points. She had her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 12 rebounds against Denver. Gardin was third in the ACC in rebounding (8.0) and an Honorable Mention All-ACC selection last year. Also last season, she tied the school record with 21 rebounds against Virginia. Gardin averaged a double-double (12.2 points, 10.1 rebounds) in ACC contests. She was second on the team in scoring (11.1) and first in rebounding (8.0). In a three-game stretch earlier in the season, Gardin had 15 boards against NC State, 11 at Clemson and 16 versus Florida State. Her most recent streak included 13 points, 10 boards at Miami and 14 points, 10 boards at North Carolina prior to the Virginia contest. She scored in double figures 17 times last season and had five or more boards in 25 games. Gardin had 14 points and a then careerhigh 16 boards against Georgetown in the first round of the 2004 BIG EAST Championship. She recorded the first three double-doubles of her collegiate career in in consecutive contests at West Virginia (13 pts., 10 reb.), Miami (13 pts., 14 reb.) and at Seton Hall (11 pts., 12 reb.). In her last 10 games of the season, Gardin averaged 10.3 points and 8.2 rebounds. Kirby Copeland Kerri Gardin Coping with Success Kirby Copeland tallied a career-high 19 points against Texas Tech and is fourth on the team in scoring averaging 9.0 points. She is also second on the team in steals (16). Copeland returned to the lineup last year at North Carolina ( ) after missing three games due to mononucleosis. Copeland stepped up her play in the season s final 22 games with double-figure scoring performances in eight games and eight or more points in 10 other contests. Over the span, Copeland averaged 9.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.7 steals and 2.2 assists. Against St. Francis, Copeland played arguably her best all-around game as a Hokie setting career highs in scoring (15) and rebounds (8) to go along with four steals and two assists. She was third on the team in steals (38) and assists (55). Season Opening Success The win over James Madison improved Virginia Tech to 23-7 in seasonopening contests. In fact, the win was the Hokies ninth consecutive victory in the first game of a season and marked their 13th win in the last 14 season openers. Home Opening Success Following the win over JMU, Virginia Tech improved to 25-5 in home openers and has won 14 in a row. The last home-opening loss occurred on Dec. 7, 1991 in a loss vs. Old Dominion. In fact, of the five losses, three occurred during the first three years of the program as a varsity sport after moving up from the club level. Hokies in Conference Tournaments Following last season s opening round loss against Wake Forest in the ACC tournament, Tech is all-time in conference tournaments posting a record in the Metro Conference, 8-4 Britney in the Atlantic-10, 4-4 in the BIG EAST, and 0-1 in the ACC. The Hokies are Anderson 17-7 in their first games in conference tournament play, 9-5 Metro, 5-0 Atlantic-10, 3-1 in the BIG EAST and 0-1 in the ACC.

9 Brittany Cook VIRGINIA TECH WOMEN S BASKETBALL NOTES 9 Cookie has Monster Debut Redshirt freshman Brittany Cook, who missed the entire season after undergoing successful left knee surgery, opened her collegiate career with bang in Tech s victory over James Madison. Cook had 17 points on 6-of-7 shooting and connected on 3-of-4 three-point attempts. Additionally, the Narrows, Va. native was 2-of-2 at the charity stripe and contributed two rebounds, one assist, and one steal in only 22 minutes. She led the Hokies with 14 points at Radford. Cook is shooting 48.0 percent (24-50) from the field and 35.7 percent (10-28) from behind the arc. Newcomers Three newcomers, along with redshirt-freshman Brittany Cook, will provide depth for the Hokies this season. Amber Hall (6-2, Fr., F, Tallahassee, Fla.), Laura Haskins (5-10, Fr., G, Alexandria, Va.) and walk-on A.J. Lemaitre (5-10, Fr., G, Fairfax, Va.) should all see action this season. Hall averaged 18 points with 11 rebounds and three blocks in leading Leon High School to the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) Sweet 16. Haskins was second team all-state at West Springfield where she set the school record for career assists, steals and rebounds previously held by 1999 Naismith High School Player of the Year and Tennessee All-American Kara Lawson. She averaged 13.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 6.0 assists last season. Lemaitre is a walk-on who turned down several scholarship offers to attend Virginia Tech. She averaged 20 points and four assists a game at W.T. Woodson High School, where she was a three-time selection to the All- Northern Region First-team. Calling up the Reserves The Virginia Tech bench picked up right where they left off last year in the season-opener against James Madison outscoring the Dukes bench 28-2 in the victory. Through the first ten games this season, the Hokies bench is outscoring the opposition by an average of 3.6 points per game. After struggling early last season, the Tech bench became a deciding factor as the year progressed. In the first five games, in which the Hokies went 3-2, the bench produced only 13.8 points per outing. However, in the final 24 games, the bench averaged 24 points and outscored the opposition by an average of 8.5 points per contest. In the victory over Southern Miss, the Virginia Tech bench outscored the entire Southern Miss team and dominated the Lady Eagles bench Toe in The Line This season, the Hokies have continued a trend from last year with 246 free throw attempts in ten games versus 173 for the opposition. Despite shooting only 58.9 percent ( ), Tech has managed to outscore opponents from the line for an average of 3.9 points per game. In fact, Carrie Mason and Megan Finnerty have combined to shoot 77.9 percent (60-77) while the rest of the team struggles at 50.1 percent (85-169). In its inaugural season in the ACC, Tech led opponents in free throws attempted ( ) resulting in the Hokies outscoring the opposition from the line for an average of 5.2 points per contest. The Hokies shot 70.8 percent (92-130) in the last five minutes plus OT last year and 73.7 percent (70-95) in the final two minutes plus overtime. Tech converted on 71.4 percent (35-49) of three-point plays and percent of its front-end foul shots. The losing conference mark this year is the first for the Hokies since the season and only the second in the past 13 seasons. Tech has won four straight conference openers and four consecutive home league openers. Tech Success Virginia Tech has averaged 22 wins over the previous eight seasons. The Hokies have advanced to the postseason each year during the streak, including six NCAA and two WNIT appearances. 11 VIRGINIA TECH WOMEN S BASKETBALL NOTES Defending the Cassell Over the last nine seasons, the Hokies have posted a record (.841) at Cassell Coliseum. Overall, the program has posted a (.712) home record since the addition of women s basketball as a varsity sport in The Hokies were 15-0 at home in and won 18-straight regular-season home games until the Georgia loss on Nov. 17, Tech was 13-1 at home in , and the Hokies have won 93 of their last 111 home games including a 10-3 mark last season. More recently, Tech has won 55 of the last 64 home contests over the past five years. The Hokies have defeated 31 of the last 32 non-conference opponents at home and 37 of the last 39. The last two non-conference home losses both occurred on Mar. 23, a overtime defeat in 2002 against Houston in the WNIT semifinals and a loss to Penn State in the 2004 NCAA Second Round. Love Those Hokies The play of the Virginia Tech women s basketball program at home has not gone unnoticed by the Hokie faithful. The following has paid huge dividends for the team for its performances at the Cassell, serving as the team s sixth man on the court. Two seasons ago, the Hokies had three of their largest crowds in the history of the program. Over 7,200 fans attended the Connecticut game on Jan. 27, 2004, marking the seventh largest crowd in the history of 11 Cassell Coliseum while over 7,100 attended the Penn State game in the NCAA Second Round which was the eighth largest crowd. Tech also drew 6,364 fans, tenth largest, on Feb. 28 for the Pittsburgh contest. In 1999, Tech set eight of the program s then 10 best single-game attendance marks and averaged a record 5,221 fans per game, ranking 13th nationally. In Tech s first-round NCAA Tournament win over St. Peter s, the Hokies recorded the program s first sellout crowd with 10,052 on hand. Tech averaged 4,196 last year which ranked 24th in the nation and third in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Through four home contests this year, the Hokies are averaging 3,333 which ranks 17th nationally. 13 VIRGINIA TECH WOMEN S BASKETBALL NOTES 13 USA Today/ESPN/WBCA POLL Tech in the Polls Virginia Tech entered the Associated Press poll this week at No. 25 and continued to receive votes in the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll. The Hokies entered the AP poll last season on Jan. 3 and the USA Today/ESPN Coaches poll on Jan. 4, but fell out of both polls three weeks later. In , the Hokies entered the coaches poll at No. 24 on Nov. 24 and debuted in the AP poll at No. 23 on Dec. 1. Tech received its first-ever ranking on January 17, 1995, when the Hokies entered the USA Today/CNN coaches poll at No. 24. The Hokies were ranked No. 23 the following week and entered The Associated Press poll at No. 25. However, Tech fell out of both polls the next week for the remainder of the year. The longest appearance in the polls occurred when the Hokies were ranked for 20-straight weeks in both polls, dating from Dec. 7, 1998 to Dec. 20, During the streak, Tech achieved it's highest-ever ranking of No. 9 in the Feb. 22, 1999 AP poll. Tough Schedule This season, Tech will face 11 NCAA tournament teams (Duke, North Carolina, Texas Tech, Maryland, Virginia, Florida State, Boston College, NC State, Old Dominion, Liberty, Richmond and three WNIT teams (Southern Methodist, Texas A& M-Corpus Christi, and Wake Forest. Of the Hokies 26 opponents this season, 13 won 20 or more games and 20 had winning seasons. This year s opponents posted a combined record of (.624) record. The schedule was loaded with successful women s basketball programs as the Hokies faced stiff competition against 13 teams that made the NCAA Tournament field and one team that was selected to the WNIT. Additionally, the schedule included seven teams that ended the season ranked in the ESPN/USA Today Top 25. Tech s strength of schedule was ranked No. 9 nationally in both the WBCA/Summerville and collegerpi.com final rankings. The Commonwealth Challenge It s a century long rivalry that s filled with intensity, spirit and new emotion. The Hoos and the Hokies first faced off in an 1895 football game in Charlottesville, VA, but they kicked off far more than a football game that year. The two teams from two different backgrounds launched a great tradition of competitive play that has led to their being in the forefront of American collegiate athletics. The University of Virginia and Virginia Tech compete in what has become one of the most compelling series in the country, sparking the desire on the part of both schools to create a formal rivalry series. Each year, the Hokies and the Hoos will compete in the Commonwealth Challenge, a points-based contest that will encompass twenty-one sports from each school. Adelphia is proud to be the presenting sponsor of the rivalry series, and is looking forward to the inaugural season. One goal of the Commonwealth Challenge is to encourage a friendly, statewide rivalry between the two ACC members in all sports in which they compete. The Beth Dunkenberger Show The Beth Dunkenberger show airs every Tuesday at 7 p.m. on Hot 100 (100.7 FM), the flagship station for Virginia Tech women s basketball. The show, hosted by Jerry Massey, is broadcast live from 7-7:30 p.m. at PK s restaurant in downtown Blacksburg. Jerry Massey, in his first season with the Hokies, will serve as the playby-play announcer on all Tech broadcasts as well as hosting the Beth Dunkenberger Show Hokies to be Televised Virginia Tech women s basketball will once again receive great television exposure. Tech will have one national appearence as the Jan. 29 game at Miami will be carried by ESPNU. As part of the ACC Television Package, Tech will have six regional telecasts, including four at home this season. The games will be carried on the ACC Regional Sports Network which includes FoxSportNet South, Comcast Sports and the Sunsport Network. Home telecasts include contests versus Virginia (Jan. 16), Maryland (Jan. 23), Duke (Feb. 6), and North Carolina (Feb. 17). 16 VIRGINIA TECH WOMEN S BASKETBALL NOTES Beth Dunkenberger Beth Dunkenberger begins her second season as the head coach of the Virginia Tech women s basketball team after guiding the Hokies to a record and the NCAA Tournament during their inaugural ACC season. Dunkenberger was named the fifth head women s basketball coach at Virginia Tech on April 6, Dunkenberger is no stranger to the Virginia Tech women s basketball program, having served on Carol Alfano s staff for nine years. ( ). She worked as a graduate assistant for two years before being promoted to a fulltime assistant position. She helped lead the Hokies to the 1994 and 1995 NCAA Tournaments, the first two appearances in school history. Dunkenberger not only helped lead Tech to two NCAA Tournaments, but also to the Metro Conference Tournament Championship in 1994 and the Metro Conference regular season championship in She served three years as recruiting coordinator and was responsible for signing Tere Williams, the first Parade All-American in the school s history. In addition, Dunkenberger assisted in recruiting seven members of the Tech 1,000-point club and four of the top six scorers in the program s history. Dunkenberger came to Blacksburg after guiding Western Carolina to a record, including a mark in her final season when the sixthseeded Catamounts won three games to advance to the Southern Conference Tournament finals. The program had only won a total of four tournament games in its 20 years in the Southern Conference prior to last season s historic run in the event. Dunkenberger s efforts earned her Southern Conference Coach of the Year honors as the Catamounts finished the season with a 21-7 record, the program s best since beginning NCAA Division I competition in It was the first time a WCU women s basketball coach had received the recognition. In Dunkenberger s first season ( ), the Cats posted a record, marking the program s most wins in 12 seasons. Dunkenberger reached 50 wins faster than any other head coach in the program s history. Not only have her teams been successful, but her studentathletes themselves garnered several awards and recognition during the Dunkenberger era at Virginia Tech and Western Carolina. Last year, Erin Gibson and Carrie Mason were named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America District III University Division team. Gibson was also selected as one of 29 ACC scholar-athletes to be named as a recipient of the ACC Postgraduate Scholarship which is awarded to individuals who have performed with distinction in both the classroom and in their respective sports, while demonstrating exemplary conduct in the community. Additionally, several of Dunkenberger s student-athletes received academic honors at Western Carolina. Dunkenberger s emphasis on the importance of academics is easily recognized. Her Western Carolina squad finished in the top 25 in the nation for women s basketball programs academically, ranking sixth with an overall team GPA of During Dunkenberger s threeyear tenure as an assistant coach, the last as recruiting coordinator, at the University of Florida, she helped the Gators to a overall record. The Lady Gators advanced to postseason play all three years she was there, with the team making an appearance in the Sweet Sixteen. While in Gainesville, Dunkenberger had the opportunity to help coach five players who are currently, or were previously, on rosters in the WNBA. Dunkenberger was valedictorian at Shawsville High School and graduated cum laude BETH S FILE from Randolph-Macon College with a Bachelor of Science degree in mathematics in She was named academic all-district as well as all-conference. She continued her education by earning a Master of Science degree in education at Virginia Tech in Dunkenberger also served as the commencement speaker at both her high school and her undergraduate graduation ceremonies. (Hiwassee College) Sweet November The first month of the season has been kind to the Hokies in recent history. In the last nine seasons, Tech is in November contests including 16-2 at home. The road has been tougher with only a 6-7 away mark. Tech is 8-1 in November neutral site games and finished this season 5-0 in the eleventh month. International Success The trip to Mexico before the Christmas break marked the fourth time in the history of the program that the Hokies have played outside the United States. Tech won all four games in the summer of 2000 during an 11-day tour in Europe. The Hokies swept two games in 2003 to win the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands and picked up five wins in the summer of 2004 during an 12-day tour of Australia. Following the two-game sweep at the Caribbean Classic, Tech is now 13-0 all-time on foreign soil. The next scheduled contests outside the U.S. border will occur in 2008 when the Hokies will play several games as part of a 12-day excursion to Greece and Italy. Another December to Remember In the last nine seasons, the Hokies have had great success in the month of December including this season as Tech has posted a perfect 5-0 mark thus far. The Hokies are 50-7 (.877) in games played in the 12th month and 29-2 (.936) inside the Cassell. Tech has won 21 straight overall December games and 34 of the last 35. Roshana Jackson has a left patella fracture and is out indefinitely. Hokies Go 2-0 in Mexico Virginia Tech picked two victories in the Caribbean Classic near Cancun, Mexico. After leading by as many as 22 points late in the game against Western Michigan in the first game, Carrie Mason hit two clutch free throws with seven seconds left to preserve at win. Tech came back the next day to play one of its best games of the season with a win over Texas Tech in the second contest. The Hokies shot a season-high 58.7 percent (27-46) from the field. Dawn Chriss led Tech with 20 points followed by Kirby Copeland s 19-point effort. Megan Finnerty chipped in with 11 points. The tournament was Tech s fourth consecutive regular season tournament to sweep two games after taking its own Lady Luck Classic and winning the Duel in the Desert tournament in Las Vegas, Nev. last season followed by the win at the SMU Hoops for the Cure event in Dallas, Texas earlier this season.
