OLLIE HITS 100: With Wednesday s win over Boston University, fifth-year UConn Coach Kevin Ollie became the fifth UConn coach to reach 100 career coaching victories. Ollie reached the triple-figure milestone in 148 games, faster than any coach in UConn history except for the legendary Hugh Greer, who reached 100 victories in 129 games. Ollie is fifth on the all-time UConn coaching wins list, behind Jim Calhoun (625), Greer (287), Dom Perno (139) and Dee Rowe (120). ADAMS ATTACK: UConn sophomore guard Jalen Adams was named to the American Athletic Conference Weekly Honor Roll on Nov. 28 after an outstanding three-game performance in the Maui Jim Maui Invitational on Nov, in Hawaii. Adams was named to the MJMI All-Tournament Team after leading all players in the tournament in scoring (28.7) and assists (7.3) and finishing fifth in field goal percentage.643. Adams had a career-high 34 points against Oklahoma State on Nov. 21, fell just one rebound short of a triple-double against Chaminade on Nov. 22, and had 27 points and 5 assists against nationally-ranked Oregon. LAST TIME OUT: UConn got its first home victory of the season by defeating Boston University, 51-49, at the XL Center on Nov. 30. The Huskies took the lead for good with 6:30 remaining in the first half, but could not shake the Terriers in the low-scoring affair. The contest was not decided until UConn senior Kentan Facey grabbed the rebound of a missed BU free throw in the final :02. Freshman Christian Vital was the only Husky to reach double figures with 13 points, while senior Amida Brimah had nine points and three rebounds, and Facey contributed eight poiints and seven rebounds. DUCK CALL: UConn could not avoid its earlygame slow start tendency and fell behind nationally-ranked (#13/12) Oregon, 30-9, in the fifth-sixth place game of the Maui Invitational on Nov. 23. From that point on, the Huskies outscored the Ducks, 60-49, and cut the lead to as little as six, but could not catch Oregon and bowed, Sophomore Jalen Adams led all scorers with 27 points and added 3 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals. Senior Rodney Purvis (13) and senior Amida Brimah (11) also scored double figures. TRIPLE THREAT: UConn sophomore Jalen Adams fell just one rebound shy of a tripledouble as he scored 25 points, handed out 11 assists and grabbed nine rebounds to lead the Huskies to a win over host school Chaminade in the consolation round of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational on Nov. 22. Adams combined with redshirt senior Rodney Purvis (23) for 48 points, while freshman Vance Jackson added a career-high 16. UConn took the lead for good with about 15:00 left on back-to-back buckets by Purvis and Adams, but could not break away from the stubborn Silverswords, who canned 14 three-pointers, one shy of a record against UConn. HIGH-SCORING LOSS: UConn rallied from a 19-point second-half deficit to cut the Oklahoma State lead to four, but could not get any closer and fell to the Cowboys, 98-90, in the first round of the Maui Jim Maui Invitational on Nov. 21. It was UConn s highest point total since its win in four overtimes over in last year s American Athletic Conference Championship. UConn, which outscored OSU, in the second half, was led by sophomore Jalen Adams career-high 34 points, including 30 in the second half, two shy of a UConn record. The Huskies also had 20 from senior Rodney Purvis. Freshman Vance Jackson also scored a career-high with 13 points. FIRST WIN: UConn registered its first win of the season, topping Loyola Marymount in a nailbiter at LMU s Gersten Pavilion in Los Angeles on Nov. 17. In a game that featured 16 lead changes, the Huskies rallied from a second-half deficit to tie the game, 54-54, with 8:01 remaining and the teams were neck-and-neck from that point on. LMU took a lead with 2:47 to go, but the Huskies would not allow another point and an offensive putback by sophomore Terry Larrier and two free throws by sophomore Jalen Adams provided the margin of victory. Larrier was UConn s top scorer with 14 points, while freshman Alterique Gilbert added 10 before suffering a shoulder injury late in the first half and missing the rest of the game. Senior Amida Brimah had 9 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 blocks in a solid all-around performance. UGH OPENER: UConn lost a season opener for the first time in 17 years as it fell to Wagner College, 67-58, on Nov. 11 at Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies fell behind early, made numerous runs at the Seahawks lead and fought their way back into a tie in the second half, but could never take over the lead. Two newcomers were bright spots for UConn, however. Redshirt sophomore Terry Larrier, playing his first game for UConn after transferring from VCU and sitting out last season, led the team with 19 points and 7 rebounds, while freshman guard Alterique Gilbert also reached double figures with 14 points. Ashton-Langford (Worcester, Mass.), a 6-2 guard attending Brewster Academy, is a consensus Top 40 recruit who averaged 22.0 points and 6.0 assists per game last season while leading Cushing Academy to the AA New England Prep School Championship. Polley (Weston, Fla.), a versatile 6-8 forward attending The Sagemont School, is an honor roll student who averaged 16.2 points, 5.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game last season to earn First Team All- Broward County honors. Carlton (Hyattsville, Md.). a 6-9 forward who attends DeMatha Catholic, helped that school s prestigious hoop program record a 33-5 record last season as he averaged 11.1 points, 11.7 rebounds, and 3.2 blocks per game and shot 62.0 percent from the floor. All three will enroll at UConn in the fall of scored at North Carolina State during his freshman season ( ). A LOOK AT SYRACUSE: The UConn-Syracuse series dates back more than 60 years, to the season. Syracuse owns a advantage in the overall 92 games and the Orange had a edge during the 34 years the teams were rivals in the Big East Conference. The teams split their last two meetings, but Syracuse has won four of the last five and seven of the last nine collisions. UConn is 6-7 against Syracuse at Madison Square Garden. In such a long-standing rivalry between two national programs, there have obviously been numerous memorable games, but none more so than the six-overtime classic in the quarterfinals of the 2009 Big East Tournament, a game finally won by the Orange, , that has been hailed as one of the greatest games in college basketball history. Syracuse, coming off its Final Four appearance last season, is 4-2 this year, bowing in consecutive games to South Carolina and Wisconsin, before bouncing back with a win against North Florida on Saturday at the Carrier Dome. The Orange are led by grad student Andrew White III, who transferred to Syracuse after graduating from Nebraska, and his provided a big lift, averaging 17.0 points and 4.1 rebounds per game and shooting.417 from three-point range, attempting twice as many treys as anybody else on the team. Sophomore Tyler Lydon also averages double figures (10.3) and is Syracuse s top rebounder (7.1). Sophomore Frank Howard (9.0 ppg, 6.7 assists) and grad student DaJuan Coleman (7.4 ppg, 5.3 rpg) are staples in the starting unit, with the fifth spot going to either senior forward Tyler Roberson (7.3 ppg, 5.4 rpg) or freshman guard Tyus Battle (78.4 ppg). Guard John Gillon, forward Taurean Thompson, and center Paschal Chukwu are the other reserves. Syracuse is averaging 76.0 ppg as a team, is +2.9 on the boards, and shoots.476 overall. 6 Kevin OLLIE Head Coach 5th year as HC; 7th year at UConn Chalk up another first among the coaching accomplishments of fouryear UConn Head Basketball Coach Kevin Ollie. In March, 2016, after reaching the championship game of the American Athletic Conference postseason tournament for the third consecutive season, the Huskies captured their first AAC title with a victory over at the Amway Center in Orlando, Fla. The win secured a second berth in the NCAA Championship in Ollie s four years, where the Huskies defeated Colorado in the first round before bowing to overall No. 1 seed Kansas in a second-round game. Ollie s.875 winning percentage (7-1) in the NCAA Tournament ranks fourth in history of all who have ever coached in the tourney. Add that to a fourth consecutive 20-win season, his second season of 25 wins or more (25-11), and it s easy to see why Ollie is considered one of the top young coaches in college basketball. In just four seasons as UConn s head coach, following two years as an assistant under Hall of Fame Coach Jim Calhoun, Ollie has already experienced a long career s worth of ups and downs --- including the ultimate high of the college basketball coaching profession, the 2014 NCAA National Championship. His teams have never won less than 20 games, while posting three perfect APR scores of His career record of (.688) already has him fifth on UConn s all-time coaching wins list. It took Ollie just 70 games to join the elite of the profession --- those who have won an NCAA championship. In just his second season as UConn s head basketball coach and only his fourth year in coaching since retiring from the NBA, Ollie firmly established himself in the college game by guiding the Huskies to a 32-8 season in and the NCAA title, defeating Kentucky, 60-54, in the tourney s championship game at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. On his way to guiding UConn to their its fourth NCAA crown in the history of the program, Ollie marched the Huskies past storied programs Saint Joseph s, Villanova, Iowa State, Michigan State, and Florida in the tournament before the finale against Kentucky. Ollie accepted a huge responsibility on Sept. 13, 2012, when he was named the 18th head coach in the history of UConn men s basketball. Despite a roster depleted by transfers and early NBA entrants, Ollie surprised the experts by guiding the Huskies to a 20-victory season (20-10), a feat no other UConn coach had ever accomplished in his first year. At season s end, Ollie s efforts were recognized by Collegeinsider. com, which selected him to receive its Ben Jobe National Coach of the Year Award, given to the top Division I minority coach. Coming out of Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles, Ollie played on some of Calhoun s finest teams during the mid-1990s, as a four-year starting point guard and a two-time captain. He played in 124 games for the Huskies, averaging 6.7 points and 5.0 assists. A third team All-Big East pick, his 619 assist total still ranks fourth on UConn s all-time list. He graduated in 1995 with a degree in Communications. After his UConn career, Ollie fought through years in the Continental Basketball Association and the U.S. Basketball League to get his chance in the NBA. Once there, Ollie would simply not give up his dream, signing a series of 10-day and one-year contracts, dealing with trades and frustrating roster cuts. Yet Ollie would not be deterred, earning a reputation throughout the league as an outstanding teammate, with strong moral fiber, impeccable character, and a vast knowledge of the game. During a 13-year NBA career, Ollie played for 11 different franchises in 12 cities. Born in Dallas on Dec. 27, 1972, and raised in Los Angeles, Ollie resides in Glastonbury and has two children, son Jalen (born 6/22/96) and daughter Cheyanne (born 2/6/01).
