The Lions won the first game at Levien Gymnasium on Saturday, January 21, behind a monster game by junior Mark Cisco, who totaled 18 points and 20 rebounds, a gym record. The Lions held Cornell to 33.9 percent shooting and made clutch free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. CISCO NAMED IVY LEAGUE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Mark Cisco earned his first career Ivy League Player of the Week honor after he posted 18 points and 20 rebounds last time out vs. Cornell. Cisco set a Levien Gym record for rebounds in a single game and the 18 points also matched Cisco s career high. It was Cisco s second straight doubledouble and his third of the season. He was dominant in the game, playing a season-high 36 minutes, shooting five of nine from the field and eight of nine from the foul line. Two of those free throws came with Columbia ahead by two points and with 21 seconds on the clock. Stepping to the line in a one-and-one situation in a two-point game (56-54) with 21 seconds remaining in the game, Cisco calmly sank both free throws to give the Lions a four-point advantage and two-possession lead. BARBOUR RUNNING THE SHOW Junior guard Brian Barbour has scored in double figures in each of the last five games and is averaging 21.3 points per game during Ivy League action, which is tops in the league. In Columbia s last game vs. Cornell, Barbour scored 15 points and added six rebounds, five assists and two steals. The weekend before, Barbour scored 25 points in each of Columbia s games against Penn and Princeton that began Ivy League play. Barbour currently leads the squad in scoring, assists, steals, free throw percentage and minutes played. THE DEFENSE NEVER RESTS Columbia s defense ranks 18th in the nation in scoring defense. The Lions yield an average of 59 points per game to opponents and are allowing teams to shoot 39.3 percent from the field. That number ranks 36th in the country, out of 345 Division I schools. The Lions have won three straight games in the series after Cornell had won the previous nine meetings. Columbia has a chance to sweep the season series for the second straight year. COACHES VS. CANCER SUITS AND SNEAKERS The Columbia coaching staff, along with all the other coaching staffs around the Ivy League, will participate in Coaches vs. Cancer Suits and Sneakers Weekend, Jan The Columbia coaches will wear sneakers with their suits to demonstrate their support for the American Cancer Society and its vision of a world with less cancer and more birthdays. ROAD WARRIORS Away from home, Columbia is 6-3 on the season, including two neutral-site games. The Lions won their last two road games, at Colgate and at Elon, to end their non-conference schedule. LIFE BEGINS AT 60 The number 60 has been a significant one during Columbia s season. The Lions are 10-0 when holding opponents to 60 points or fewer. Columbia also has an 10-1 record when scoring 60 points or more. SENIOR MOMENTS Columbia s senior class has won 50 games during its four years on the court. The group has a chance to combine for the most wins over a four-year period since the class of 1979, headlined by Alton Byrd and Ricky Free, which won 56 games from the season to COLUMBIA CONTROLLING THE GLASS In 12 of its first 19 games, Columbia has totaled more rebounds than its opponents. In the game vs. Cornell on January 21, the Lions outrebounded the Big Red MARGIN CALL Columbia s last five games have been decided by seven points or fewer. THEY WALK THE LINE The Lions have been getting it done at the free throw line lately, shooting better than 78 percent in each of their last six games. During that span, Columbia has made 90 of 109 free throw attempts (82.6 percent). FINAL FIVE In the last five minutes of games, Columbia shoots 76.3 percent from the free throw line, an upgrade over its average of 73.2 percent this season.

3 THE FIRST TWO SEASONS OF THE KYLE SMITH ERA Over the last two seasons with Kyle Smith as the Lions head coach, Columbia has won 27 games. That is the largest total in a head coach s first two seasons since Buddy Mahar won 27 games over the and seasons. Lou Rossini ( ) won 37 games over his first two seasons as head coach, including Columbia s magical 23-1 campaign in ball don t lye Sophomore guard Meiko Lyles ranks second on the team in scoring this season with 10.5 points per game and is second in steals with 21. Lyles has scored in double figures in five of the last seven games and is averaging 14.4 points per game during that span. THE BLOOM IS ON ROSENBERG Rookie Alex Rosenberg has had a strong start to his first collegiate campaign. Named Ivy League Rookie of the Week earlier this season, Rosenberg is averaging 8.4 points per game over the last seven games. He also has contributed at least two assists and at least two rebounds in each of those contests. GO, JOHNNY, GO Junior forward John Daniels has provided a big lift recently in Columbia s frontcourt. In the game vs. Cornell on January 21, Daniels had six rebounds, two assists and a big basket during the second half after Cornell had made it a one-point game. He ranks second on the team in rebounds at 6.1 per game. blaise of glory Senior forward Blaise Staab provided a boost in the game vs. Princeton on January 14. In 21 minutes, Staab pulled down seven rebounds, tying a team high. CROCKETT ROCKS IT Senior guard Chris Crockett has provided instant offense off the Columbia bench early this season. In the win against North Texas on Dec. 3, Crockett scored a career-high 12 points on four three-pointers. A day later vs. La Sierra, Crockett matched his career best with four assists and added eight points. EVEN STEVEN Senior Steve Egee has given Columbia a boost off the bench in recent games. In the league-opening weekend vs. Penn and Princeton, Egee averaged 5.0 points and 6.5 rebounds. The 13 total rebounds were the most by a Columbia player during the two-game weekend. SPRING FORWARD Rookie Noah Springwater has seen increased court time in recent games and stepped up in Columbia s win at Colgate on January 4. In that game, Springwater made a number of terrific defensive plays and hit two big threepointers in the game. He played a season-high 26 minutes vs. the Raiders. DEAN S LIST Junior Dean Kowalski has given Columbia solid minutes off the bench recently. For the season, Kowalski has dished out 11 assists with just three turnovers. Last time out vs. Cornell, Kowalski played a season-high 11 minutes. OSETKOWSKI S BLOCK PARTY Rookie center Cory Osetkowski leads Columbia with 15 blocked shots this season. In the game at Elon, Osetkowski scored five consecutive points in the second half, helping Columbia tie the game and eventually hold a lead. CISCO AMONG TOP OFFENSIVE REBOUNDERS Junior Mark Cisco ranks fourth all-time in offensive rebounds at Columbia after more than two and a half seasons. Offensive rebounds were kept as a separate stat beginning in the season. 1. 8 KYLE SMITH Head Coach Second season Hamilton 92 Kyle Smith was named Columbia s 22nd head coach in the 110- year history of the men s basketball program on May 2, In his first season at Columbia, Smith led the Lions to a record, the first winning season for a new Columbia head coach in 33 years. Ten of those wins came at home games at Levien Gymnasium, tied for the most in program history in a single season. The Lions increased their scoring output by more than 10 points per game in and scored more than 70 points 15 different times during the season. Under Smith s tutelage, a pair of Columbia guards Noruwa Agho (first team) and Brian Barbour (honorable mention) were named All-Ivy League. Agho was also recognized on a regional level by the National Association of Basketball Coaches and the Metropolitan Writers Association. Smith, who is an 18-year veteran assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level, had worked as the associate head men s basketball coach at St. Mary s College (Ca.) of the West Coast Conference (WCC), for the past nine seasons. At St. Mary s, he played an integral role in building their successful men s basketball program. In , the Gaels finished 28-6 and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division I Men s Basketball Tournament. When Smith arrived at St. Mary s (Calif.) in 2001, the team had won only two games in the previous season. Over the past three years, the school has won 81 games. As the associate head coach of the Gaels, he was responsible for running the team s offense, and coordinating all recruiting activities. Before coming to Saint Mary s, Smith spent one season as the top assistant at the Air Force Academy. During his only season with the Falcons, Smith served as the offensive coordinator, recruiting coordinator and helped with player development and scouting. Smith is a 1992 graduate of Hamilton College, where he played basketball, and helped lead the Continentals to a 26-1 record and a #1 ranking in NCAA Division III during his junior season. In his senior season at Hamilton, Smith shot 51.3 percent from three-point range, which still stands as the program record for a single season. That year, Hamilton was ECAC Champions. Smith holds a master s degree in Educational Leadership from the University of San Diego, where he began his coaching career. He and his wife, Katie, have two sons, Rocco and Bo. 30 Game 1 #4 Connecticut 70, Columbia 57 STORRS, Conn. -- Columbia took a number of potential knockout blows by fourth-ranked UConn and bounced back from nearly every one. In the end, preseason All-American Jeremy Lamb s 30 points proved to be the difference in the Huskies victory over Columbia in the season opener for both teams. The Lions held strong throughout the first half, taking care of the ball and only committed five turnovers. After the Huskies opened up a 13-5 lead on an 8-0 run, Columbia came back and cut the deficit to on a Noruwa Agho jumper. UConn then ripped off a 10-0 run to take a advantage as Roscoe Smith s dunk ended the run. Columbia responded with a run of its own however to cut the deficit to on a Mark Cisco tipin. The Huskies closed out the half on a 10-3 spurt as Jeremy Lamb connected for his third three-pointer of the half to send UConn into the locker room with a 15-point lead. Brian Barbour scored the first four points of the second half and after Agho canned a three-pointer, Columbia trailed by just eight, 39-31, at the 16-minute mark. UConn quickly scored 10 unanswered points to take an 18-point lead and remained ahead by 18, 56-38, with 7:49 to go. Columbia responded by hitting two three-pointers, one by Chris Crockett and another by Meiko Lyles, to get within 11 points, 57-46, with 5:57 left. The Lions trailed by just nine, 65-56, with a minute remaining after Agho hit his fourth triple of the game. That was as close as the Lions got as UConn held on for its first win of the season. We competed, head coach Kyle Smith said after the game. There were alot of positives for us. This should be a confidence builder. Noruwa Agho led the Lions with 16 points and in his first collegiate start, fellow senior Blaise Staab posted a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds. The game plan tonight was to put a body on their bigs, Staab said after the game. I thought Mark [Cisco] and me did that. Game 2 FURMAN 62, Columbia 58 NEW YORK - The Columbia men s basketball team suffered a late-game loss to Furman, falling despite having the lead with just three minutes left in the game. Junior Brian Barbour led the Lions with 16 points, while senior Noruwa Agho had 12 points in the game. The Lions led at halftime as Columbia s stout half-court defense limited the Paladins to just 25 percent shooting from the field. On the other end, the Lions converted on just 36 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, but sank 10 of their 12 free throw attempts. Columbia grabbed hold of a edge when Barbour deflected Bobby Austin s pass and flew down the court to convert a freewheeling reverse layup with 14:51 to play. Furman responded with a 9-2 run over the next four minutes that cut Columbia s lead to four points, but Agho s layup pushed the Lions lead back to six at the 10-minute mark. Furman eventually tied the game with 5:46 remaining on an Austin jumper but Alex Rosenberg made a nifty move to the basket and dropped off a pass to Cory Osetkowski who laid it in to give Columbia back a two-point advantage with 3:10 remaining. Brandon Sebirumbi tied the game on his lone basket of the game then Bryant Irwin made his only basket of the game, a three-pointer from right in front of the visiting bench to put Furman ahead with two minutes left. Columbia tried to scramble back in the final minutes but the Paladins made eight of 10 from the line down the stretch to seal their second straight win to start the season. Richard Brown led Furman with 15 points and four assists while Barbour s 16 led all scorers. Agho had five assists to go along with his 12 points and Columbia s rookie duo of Osetkowski and Rosenberg had seven points apiece. 31 Game 3 american 66, Columbia 58 NEW YORK - In a game with 11 ties and 11 lead changes, American grabbed hold of a late lead and hit some key shots down the stretch to defeat Columbia at Levien Gymnasium on Saturday night. Brian Barbour had 18 points to lead Columbia and Mark Cisco notched a double-double with 15 points and 12 rebounds. Playing their first game without All-Ivy League guard Noruwa Agho, sidelined indefinitely with an injury, the Lions used tenacious defense a solid inside-outside offense to take a four-point lead late in the first half. The half ended with both teams tied at 26 after American s Troy Brewer hit a fadeaway jumper as time expired. Neither team led by more than four points for most of the second half. Cisco, who scored nine of his 15 in the second half, scored six straight points for Columbia to boost its lead to after a nice pass from Chris Crockett at the six-minute mark. American then went to Charles Hinkle, a transfer from Vanderbilt, who nailed a three-pointer to get the Eagles within a point, then hit two free throws with four minutes left to give American the lead for good. The Lions held the Jaspers to 26.2 percent shooting in the game and forced 21 Manhattan turnovers. Columbia got off to a quick start, leading 15-2 after consecutive three-pointers by Meiko Lyles and Alex Rosenberg at the 13:25 mark. The Lions registered assists on five of their first six buckets. The defenses then took over as the shooting cooled for the remainder of the half. Manhattan cut the Lions lead to five twice during the first half but Columbia led at intermission. The second half started as the first half ended and Manhattan s Michael Alvarado sank a free throw to get the Jaspers within seven with 16:27 remaining. After Roberto Colonette made one of two free throws at the 14:57 mark, Manhattan trailed by just five, But Columbia easily broke Manhattan s press on its next possession and Rosenberg converted a driving layup for a conventional three-point play to put Columbia ahead by eight. 33 Game 7 Columbia 69, LOYOLA MARYMOUNT 61 LOS ANGELES - Brian Barbour s career-high 24 points led an outstanding team effort to stun host Loyola Marymount University in the Centennial Classic. John Daniels scored just six points, but was instrumental in the win, leading all players with 12 rebounds, including crucial boards in the final seconds of the game. Columbia led by as many as 18 points, and from start to finish, but LMU rallied in the final minutes to threaten. Columbia led by 14 at the break, and neither team started off the second period well. Loyola Marymount cut the lead to 12 with 18:43, but Meiko Lyles answered with a tough three on an assist by Daniels to push the lead back out to 15 with 17:36 remaining. Columbia continued its hot shooting, pushing the lead to 18 with 9:22 to play, behind three three-pointers by Lyles, and layups by Barbour and Blaise Staab. Meiko Lyles, who hit 12 consecutive three pointers during the tournament, finished the game leading all players with 16 points. For the tournament, Lyles was 14-of-17 from behind the arc. It is the seventh straight win for Columbia, which received 12 points each from Mark Cisco and John Daniels. Brian Barbour added 11 points and six assists in the win. LIU came into the game averaging 77.6 points per game while Columbia s defense allowed opponents to average 56.7 points per game so it was a game of contrasting styles. After it took both teams a few minutes to warm up offensively, the high-scoring Blackbirds jumped out to a on a Kenny Onyechi jumper at the 11:12 mark. It was the third straight win for the Lions, who have won 10 of their last 11 games. Colgate led 19-9 midway through the first half but the Lions ripped off nine straight points to get within a point, 19-18, on a three-pointer by Noah Springwater with nine minutes left. Drew Ferry came back on Cornell s next possession to bury a three-pointer to cut the deficit to seven, Four minutes later, with Columbia still up by seven, Ferry drained another triple to make it a game with 1:53 left to play. Cornell kept up its full-court pressure and forced two Columbia turnovers that let the Big Red back into the contest. Two Chris Wroblewski free throws made it a game with 32 seconds left and Cornell had to foul to extend the game. With 21 seconds left, Ferry fouled Cisco after an inbounds pass. Cisco had made six of seven from the line in the game already and calmly sank both foul shots to make it a game. After Wroblewski hit a contested baseline jumper, the Big Red fouled Barbour, who also calmly drained a pair of foul shots to keep Columbia s lead at two possession, Cisco posted his second straight double-double with 18 points and 20 boards and also added three assists and two blocked shots. Without Mark, they win that game by 10 points, Barbour said after the game. He was a beast on the boards. Barbour finished with 14 points and five assists and Meiko Lyles had a strong game with 15 points and four rebounds.
