3 class ACT Columbia senior Patrick Foley has been named one of 30 national candidates for the prestigious Lowe s Senior CLASS Award. A total of 30 NCAA Division I men s basketball players have been selected as national candidates from a large pool of nominees. The award - presented annually to the NCAA Division I Student-athlete of the Year in eight sports - focuses on the Four Cs of classroom, character, community and competition. A two-time co-captain, Foley is a history major who currently carries a 3.87 grade point average. Last year, Foley was the second Columbia men s basketball player ever to earn a spot on the CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America team. Despite missing three games with an injury in January, Foley has had a solid campaign, averaging just shy of 10 points per game and a team-high three assists per game. The Long Island native is shooting 42 percent from the floor and from three-point range this season. the life of brian Junior forward Brian Grimes has had a strong season and has returned to the court after suffering an injury in early January. Grimes is averaging just under 10 points per game and 6.4 rebounds per game, which ranks second in the Ivy League. Grimes got off to a great start in his Columbia career when the La Salle transfer posted consecutive double-doubles in the Lions first two games of the season, at DePaul and vs. Longwood. Grimes posted a career-high 21 points in Columbia s win over Lehigh in early December and has scored in double figures in seven of his 14 games this season. great scott! Senior co-captain Niko Scott has scored in double figures in six of his Columbia s last 11 games and is shooting well from the perimeter. Scott has made 49.2 percent of his shots from the field during that span and 48.6 percent from three-point range. The New York City native is sixth in the Ivy League in three-point percentage and has now made 112 in his career, just six away from Joe Case 02, who moonlights as an online video producer for gocolumbialions.com. Scott has made 23 treys during the season, just eight shy of his career best. three-point fg made in a career 1. Matt Shannon ( ) C.J. Thompkins ( ) K.J. Bulger followed that performance with a season-high 11 points on Jan. 6 at Lafayette. He also added nine points and three rebounds in the first matchup with Cornell on Jan. 16. A defensive specialist, Bulger is currently tied for seventh all-time in career steals with former Lion Maurice Murphy 04. steals in a career (first kept in ) 1. Gary Raimondo ( ) C.J. In the two games against Cornell, Ampim was solid, averaged 6.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in 22.0 minutes. Of his 10 rebounds in the two games, six came on the offensive glass. cisco earns ivy league rookie honors On December 28, Columbia s Mark Cisco was named Ivy League Rookie of the Week after his eight-point, eight-rebound effort at Quinnipiac on Dec. 23. Cisco has started the Lions last seven games and during that span, he has surpassed his season averages, going for 4.6 points and 5.0 rebounds per game. zack attack Last Saturday vs. Cornell, Zack Crimmins came off the bench to provide 13 minutes in his most impressive performance of the season. Crimmins had a season-best six points and six rebounds in the game and helped the Lions front line limit Cornell s Jeff Foote to just eight points and five rebounds.

4 johnny on the spot In his first year, forward John Daniels has shown he belongs on the court early this season. Daniels has started nine games this season and had his best game as a Lion on Dec. 8 at Wagner. The Iowa native notched his first collegiate double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds in 20 minutes. He made four of six from the field and made all four of his free throws, all coming to ice the game in the final minute. egee pop Sophomore guard Steve Egee has provided solid depth in the backcourt so far this season as a scorer and as a ball handler. In the game against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Jan. 11, Egee posted a career best, with 10 points in 27 minutes off the bench. columbia LOOKs TO remain tough on defense Columbia s defense has been one of the Ivy League s best in recent years under head coach Joe Jones, and has improved every season. In , Columbia ranked second in the league in both scoring defense and field goal percentage defense. The Lions also ranked 42nd out of 330 Division I teams in scoring defense, and 21st in the nation in three-point field goal defense. This season, Columbia has also been strong on the defensive end. The Lions have won nine of their last thirteen games at Levien Gym, dating back to the end of last season. bulger, foley, scott are captains The trio of senior guards Kevin Bulger, Patrick Foley and Niko Scott will captain the Lions squad. Bulger returns after a junior season in which he was Columbia s jack of all trades, and earned the team s co-mvp award at season s end. Foley fought through injury last season to produce 10.9 points per game and 2.5 assists per game as one of the Ivy League s top point guards, while Scott had a solid season, shooting 42.2 percent beyond the arc and also earned the team s defensive MVP nod. new FACES, NEW PLACES Columbia has six new players on its squad and two former transfers who had not played prior to this season. Junior Brian Grimes came to Columbia after a year at La Salle and sat out the previous two seasons, the first due to NCAA transfer regulations and last year because of a preseason injury. Fellow junior Max Craig sat out last season after spending two years at Loyola Marymount and after a preseason injury, is expected back in the middle of the season. First-years Brian Barbour, Mark Cisco, John Daniels, Sandeep Dhaliwal, Dean Kowalski and Tom Piscina also join the Columbia squad this season. There is also a new face on the coaching staff in Marlon Sears, who joins the bench with eight years of Division I coaching experience under his belt. preseason ivy league media poll In what promises to be a competitive Ivy League season, Columbia was picked sixth in the Ivy League men s basketball preseason poll, league officials announced in late October. 7 JOE JONES Head Coach Seventh season Oswego 87 Joe Jones aimed to build a solid foundation for a successful winning program when he took the reins of the Columbia men s basketball team in April While on his mission, he redefined Columbia Basketball. Entering his seventh season, Jones accomplishments continue to accumulate and he is nowhere near finished. The Lions have compiled 21 Ivy League wins over the past three seasons, the most for any Columbia team during a three-year span since Along with Cornell and, Columbia is the only other Ivy League team to finish among the league s top four during the past three seasons. Jones Coaching Timeline Columbia University Head Coach (2003-present) Villanova University Assistant Coach ( ) Hofstra University Assistant Coach ( ) Columbia s defense has been among the Ivy League s best over the last three seasons under Jones watch and has improved every season. In , Columbia ranked second in the league in both scoring defense and field goal percentage defense. Among all 330 Division I teams nationwide, the Lions ranked 42nd in scoring defense at 62.1 points per game allowed, and 21st in three-point field goal defense, as opponents shot just 30.6 percent from downtown. Comsewogue (L.I.) High School Head Coach ( ) The season may have been Jones best coaching job as he steered Columbia to a 7-7 mark in Ivy League play, despite missing as many as four regular starters throughout the season due to injuries. During the season, Jason Miller 09CC established himself as one of the Ivy League s premier big men with a career season that ranked him among the league s best in scoring and rebounding. Miller earned a second team All-Ivy League selection and first-year Noruwa Agho 12CC earned Ivy League Rookie of the Week honors three times, establishing himself as one of the league s top newcomers. Jones first recruiting class helped reestablish Columbia as Ivy League contenders, thanks in large part to two-time first team All-Ivy Leaguer, John Baumann 08CC. Baumann became the 23rd player in school history to score 1,000 points, essentially over three seasons, after he missed much of his first year due to injury. Baumann finished with 1,298 points over his stellar career and in 2008, became the first Columbian to earn first team All-Metropolitan area honors since Columbia Athletics Hall of Famer Buck Jenkins in In , the Lions finished overall, and 7-7 in the Ivy League. The 16 wins were the Lions most since , and the fourth-place league finish was the Lions best showing since

19 Game 1 DePaul 59, Columbia 53 ROSEMONT, Ill. Columbia had a chance to tie the game in the final minute but a three-point try was just long and DePaul hit three of four free throws down the stretch to capture a over a tough Lion squad in the season opener for both teams. Both teams took their time to get going offensively, but it was Columbia s Steve Egee who came off the bench to spark the Lions early with a three-pointer and a pull-up jumper on consecutive possessions to pull Columbia to within 9-8 at the 12:36 mark. Columbia capitalized on nine DePaul turnovers in the first half and eventually took an lead after a three-pointer by Noruwa Agho, who finished with 13 points, and a nifty move in the lane by first-year Mark Cisco. The Blue Demons clamped down on the defensive end, going on a 12-1 run for nearly six minutes until Brian Grimes hit a jumper to make it DePaul. The Lions were within three, 28-25, near the end of the first half but DePaul s Mike Stovall nailed a three-pointer from the far baseline as time ran out in the half to make it DePaul maintained a lead between five and nine points throughout much of the second half as the Lions stayed close by switching defenses while converting on timely shots of their own. Missed free throws by both sides also kept the score in that range as the Blue Demons were unable to extend their lead to double digits and Columbia was unable to make it a one-possession game until the final minutes. With DePaul ahead 54-48, Niko Scott hit his first shot of the game, a huge three-pointer from the wing with 1:36 remaining to get Columbia to within three, the closest the Lions had been since the end of the first half. After Columbia forced a turnover on the defensive end, Foley s three-pointer with a DePaul defender flying at him just missed long and DePaul s Will Walker came away with the rebound after a fight for the loose ball. Walker made three of his four free throws in the final 32 seconds as DePaul came away with the six-point win. Game 2 Columbia 72, Longwood 61 NEW YORK Led by 24 points from sophomore Noruwa Agho, Columbia jumped out to an early double-digit advantage and finished with a victory over Longwood in its home opener at Levien Gym on Friday. Junior Brian Grimes recorded his second straight double-double as a Lion with 14 points and 13 rebounds. Columbia (1-1) built a 19-point first half lead courtesy of a sizzling 62.1 percent field goal percentage. The Lions were also stout defensively, limiting the Lancers to 29 percent shooting from the floor. The Lions led after hitting four straight shots, the last coming on a baseline jumper by John Daniels, who made his second straight start to begin his collegiate career. Columbia increased its lead to as many as 21 points in the first half after two free throws by Agho, who scored 15 of his 24 in the opening 20 minutes. He made five of six from the field in the first half, including three of three from long range. Columbia maintained at least a 17-point advantage for the first 10 minutes of the second half until Longwood started to creep back into the contest. Earl Gee II hit a three-pointer at the 10:16 mark to make it Columbia, and Longwood cut the Columbia lead to 10 points four different times. The Lancers eventually made it an eight-point game, 68-60, at the 2:54 mark on a layup by Dana Smith in transition. Smith led Longwood with 22 points and six rebounds. Columbia did not allow Longwood to get any closer as Patrick Foley, who finished with 10 points and four assists, hit four straight free throws down the stretch to seal the victory. I thought we played really well in the first half, said head coach Joe Jones. In the second half, we didn t have the same intensity so defensively we had some lapses. Agho s 24 led all scorers as he finished 4-for-4 from three-point range. Grimes finished 7-of-9 from the field and added two blocked shots that made the Levien Gym crowd rise. Mark Cisco also chipped in with eight points and four rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench. 20 Game 3 Columbia 73, Bucknell 59 NEW YORK Columbia won its second straight game, over Bucknell at Levien Gym, closing out the contest on a 30-8 run after the Bison had opened an eight-point lead with 10 minutes remaining. Noruwa Agho continued his outstanding play with a game-high 23 points as the Lions shot 72.2 percent from three-point range for the game. The game was tight throughout with the lead changing hands 11 times, and six times in the second half. Columbia led by three points at halftime, but Bucknell shot the ball extremely well from the perimeter to start the second half. At one point in the second half, Bucknell hit four straight three-pointers, including three from G.W. Boon, to take a lead at the 10:16 mark. Agho, who scored 17 of his 23 points in the second half, came back to nail a three ball from the wing. The three-pointer came after the Lions were able to corral two straight offensive rebounds. Agho hit another trey to make it a two-point game but Bucknell continued to hold the lead until the 4:55 mark, when Foley made two free throws to give the Lions a advantage. Brian Grimes, who converted a key layup earlier in Columbia s run, hit one of two free throws to put the Lions ahead by two, and after another Columbia defensive stop, Agho hit his fifth three-pointer of the half, a dagger from the top of the key with a Bucknell defender flying at him, sending both players to the floor, as the Columbia fans erupted. Columbia still led by just four points with less than two minutes remaining. After an offensive rebound and a 30-second timeout, Niko Scott buried a three-pointer with the shot clock winding down to put the Lions ahead by seven. The Lions held strong from there, punctuating the win with an offensive putback by Blaise Staab in the final minute. Agho led all scorers with 23 points, hitting 8-of-12 from the field, including 7-of-8 from three-point range. Foley had a masterful game at the point, with 13 points and seven assists. Scott added 12 for the Lions, who improved to 2-1 with the victory. Game 4 Syracuse 85, Columbia 60 SYRACUSE, N.Y. Noruwa Agho had his third straight 20+ point game but it was not enough as Syracuse began the second half on a 19-3 run and remained unbeaten with an win over Columbia at the Carrier Dome. Agho started off hot, making his first four shots, including three straight from three-point range, as the Lions were within a point of the Orange, 14-13, at the 11-minunte mark. Syracuse then went on a 10-2 run to open up a lead, but Columbia came back, thanks in large part to some terrific hustle plays by John Daniels, who converted a layup, grabbed two straight offensive rebounds on the next possession, and fed Niko Scott for a three ball to cut the Syracuse lead to with seven minutes left in the half. The Lions had a chance to further cut into the Orange s lead but Syracuse was able to rip off seven straight points to take a lead with 4:38 to play. Again, Columbia came back as Foley drained a three from the top of the key and Zack Crimmins found Asenso Ampim cutting on the baseline for an easy layup to bring the Lions within six, Syracuse responded with five points of its own but Crimmins converted a putback with three seconds remaining in the half as the Lions headed to intermission down by nine, Wes Johnson had eight points in Syracuse s 19-3 run to start the second half and finished with a game-high 26 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Agho finished with 22 points and five rebounds, hitting on 8-of-14 from the floor. Foley had eight points and two assists, while Daniels had a solid all-around game with seven points, six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot. They played the zone about as well as any Syracuse team I ve seen, head coach Joe Jones said after the game. Their athletic ability just took over and they ve done that to a lot of good teams this year. Columbia still outrebounded Syracuse on the offensive glass, had 18 assists on its 22 field goals, and posted a season-high nine steals. 21 Game 5 Sacred Heart 60, Columbia 55 FAIRFIELD, CONN. A back-and-forth second half saw Columbia down by 12, then ahead by eight, and ultimately down by five at the end of the game as Sacred Heart s Ryan Litke and Corey Hassan combined for 22 of the Pioneers 30 second-half points in a win over the Lions at the Pitt Center on Monday night. Columbia started out hot, taking a 13-4 lead at the 14-minute mark, hitting four of its first six shots from the field. The Lions offense soon stalled, as Sacred Heart came back to tie the game at 21 with 5:45 remaining. The Pioneers hit four of eight from three-point range in the first half, including two by Hassan, who scored 10 in the first half. Sacred Heart closed out the first 20 minutes on a 9-0 run and led at intermission. Sacred Heart came out quickly in the second half, scoring the first five points of the half, prompting a Columbia timeout. After that, the Lions started to mount their comeback. A driving layup by Niko Scott was followed by a pair of mid-range jumpers by Patrick Foley to bring Columbia within eight, The Lions then went on an 11-0 run, scoring points in the half-court set and in transition. A three-point play by Brian Grimes after he grabbed an offensive rebound brought Columbia to within a point, 37-36, and Foley s running one-hander off the glass gave Columbia its first lead since midway through the first half at Columbia built its biggest lead of the half, 48-40, after two free throws by Mark Cisco, at the 8:52 mark. But Sacred Heart was able to come back, sparked by a basket by Jerrell Thompson and two long three-pointers by Hassan to tie the game at 48. The Lions still led after two free throws by Kevin Bulger with six minutes left, but Litke sank consecutive three-pointers to put Sacred Heart ahead, Down by two with a minute remaining, Columbia had a chance to tie but Sacred Heart forced a turnover. The Pioneers made three of their four free throws down the stretch to seal the win. Game 6 Columbia 75, Lehigh 70 NEW YORK Patrick Foley tied his career high and Brian Grimes set a new career high as the Columbia duo scored 21 points apiece to lead the Lions to a hard-fought, win over Lehigh Thursday night at Levien Gym. After going up 11-4 with four minutes gone by in the first half, Columbia had to fight off an energized Lehigh attack. The Mountain Hawks had five steals in the first half and caused eight Columbia turnovers. Lehigh led by as many as six, 20-14, after a 16-3 run, but the Lions were able to whittle away the deficit and trailed Lehigh at halftime. Columbia came out with renewed energy of its own to start the second half and Foley was the catalyst. The senior co-captain scored 16 of his 21 points in the second half and finished with six assists and four rebounds. Perhaps the best sequence of the game was after Columbia took a lead, Foley blocked a potential three-pointer by Lehigh point guard Marquis Hall at the top of the key. The Lions pushed the ball up to the other end and Brian Grimes found Foley at the top of the key and Foley drained a three-pointer to put Columbia ahead, The Lions led by seven, 51-44, at the 11-minute mark, but Lehigh clawed back into the game once again to tie it at 53 on a Rob Keefer jumper. Niko Scott then hit an NBA-range three-pointer on the left side to put Columbia back ahead by three. The Lions again pushed their lead to seven, but Lehigh eventually made it a one-possession game, 63-60, on a four-point play by Hall with four minutes to go. After both teams held strong on the defensive end for two minutes, Columbia s Asenso Ampim made a beautiful post move for an easy layin, making it a game. Columbia went 6-of-6 from the foul line in the final two minutes as Lehigh made it interesting by nailing some long three-pointers. 22 Game 7 Stony Brook 63, Columbia 60 STONY BROOK, N.Y. Columbia had its chances to either tie or go ahead late in the game but the Lions fell just short in a setback at Stony Brook on Saturday at Pritchard Gym. Chris Martin scored a game-high 18 points for Stony Brook, and hit 10 of 11 at the foul line to lead the Seawolves, who led at the nine-minute mark, but Columbia used tight defense to storm back at the end of the first half. The Lions tied the score at 31 on a John Daniels layup at the twominute mark and made three straight defensive stops before Niko Scott drilled a three-pointer with 36 seconds left on great ball movement around the perimeter to put Columbia ahead, at halftime. Columbia started out strong again in the second half, and went on a 14-3 run early in the second half, sparked by balanced scoring by each of the five Lion players on the court. The Lions eventually took their biggest lead of the game, 50-38, with 14 minutes remaining. The Lions still led by six, 54-48, after two free throws by Kevin Bulger at the 8:43 mark. But back-to-back treys by Stony Brook big man Danny Carter tied the game at 54. Noruwa Agho hit a pull-up jumper to put Columbia back up by a deuce, but Stony Brook answered with six straight points over a threeminute span in which Columbia came up empty in four attempts at the foul line. Columbia still trailed by two, 62-60, after a layup and a steal on the other end by Asenso Ampim with 20 seconds left but the Lions came up empty on the offensive end in the final seconds. Agho and Scott each had 12 for Columbia, while Patrick Foley added 11 points, four rebounds and three assists. Daniels had a strong game underneath with six points and nine rebounds and Brian Grimes also had seven points and eight rebounds. Game 8 Columbia 102, Wagner 91 STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. Columbia was up by 25 at halftime, but Wagner used full-court pressure and 10 second-half three-pointers to get back into the game as the Lions eventually held off Wagner, , at Spiro Sports Center. The Lions were down 13-9 at the 15-minute mark before mounting a huge first-half run that saw Columbia play some of its best basketball of the season. Columbia used a 24-9 run over 10 minutes in the first half, then closed out the half on a 19-4 run, sparked by contributions from the Lions bench, including Brian Barbour (five points) and Matt Johnson. Noruwa Agho had 15 in the first half, on his way to a career-high 30 points on 11-of-16 shooting. Brian Grimes had 12 of 17 points in the first half as the Lions had 10 assists on 21 field goals. Wagner picked up its full-court pressure in the second half, turning the game into a track meet. The Seahawks hit 10 of their 20 three-point attempts in the half. Wagner s Chris Martin hit five of his ten three-point tries in the second half and scored 21 in the final 20 minutes. He had a game-best 34 points. Wagner cut the Columbia lead to single digits, 88-79, at the fourminute mark, the closest the Seahawks had gotten since the eight-minute mark in the first half. But the Lions picked up their defensive pressure, forcing some Wagner turnovers, while making their free throws and a few key baskets on the offensive end. Columbia hit the century mark for the first time in two years, since a win over Polytechnic at Levien Gym on December 29, Agho s 30 led four Lions in double figures, including Grimes (17 points, six rebounds), Asenso Ampim (season-high 13 points) and John Daniels, who tallied his first collegiate double-double with 12 points and 10 boards. 23 Game 9 Columbia 69, Bryant 57 SMITHFIELD, R.I. Columbia clamped down on the defensive end in the second half and pulled away from Bryant, capturing its second straight road win, a victory at Bryant on Saturday afternoon. The Lions improved to 5-4 with the victory, heading into an 11-day break for final exams. After allowing 91 points in its previous game at Wagner, Columbia came out with renewed defensive intensity, leading to a low-scoring first half. The game stayed close throughout the first 20 minutes, as Columbia was able to extend its lead to six, 31-25, under a minute remaining in the half on a fast-break layup by Asenso Ampim after a long pass from Patrick Foley. Columbia started the second half on a quick 7-2 run to extend its lead to with 16:29 left. The Lions went ahead on a threepointer at the top of the key by Foley with 12:56 left and led by as many as eight points the rest of the way. Noruwa Agho scored 15 of his game-high 23 points in the second half, including two of three from three-point range. I liked the way we played [today], said head coach Joe Jones after the game. It wasn t our best game, but I liked the approach we had in this game. Brian Grimes had a solid game with 12 points and seven rebounds. Foley also had 12 points and Niko Scott finished with 10. Ampim had a season-high 11 rebounds, including seven offensive boards. Game 10 Quinnipiac 63, Columbia 51 HAMDEN, Conn. Quinnipiac outscored Columbia in the second half after the Lions had opened up an eight-point lead early in the second half and eventually defeated the Lions, at the TD Bank Sports Center. The Lions shot 46 percent from the field in the first half and took a lead into the locker room. Despite Patrick Foley picking up two quick fouls early in the half, the Lions held the lead for the entire first half, paced by seven points each by Noruwa Agho and Niko Scott. Columbia scored the first four points of the second half, matching its largest lead of the game (eight points, 35-27) at the 19-minute mark. Over the next five minutes, Quinnipiac scored eight unanswered points to tie the game at 35. The Lions still held a lead with 11:15 remaining on a nice post move by Mark Cisco, but Quinnipiac stiffened on defense from that point. Columbia went without a field goal for nearly seven minutes as the Bobcats ultimately took a double-digit lead to put the game away. Agho led the Lions with 14 points and three assists, while Quinnipiac s James Feldeine had a team-high 13 points and Dave Johnson had all 10 of his points in the first half. 24 Game 11 Maine 65, Columbia 59 NEW YORK Columbia held a nine-point lead at the end of the first half but Maine stepped up its intensity after halftime and eventually held on to defeat Columbia at Levien Gym on Wednesday night. Columbia looked like the top three-point shooting team in the nation early in the game, hitting three three-pointers in the first 6:16 to take a quick 14-5 lead over Maine. Maine then switched to a 2-3 zone to slow down the game and got to within three, 16-13, at the 10-minute mark. But the Lions would solve the Black Bears zone and held a lead at halftime, sparked by Niko Scott s 11 points in the first 20 minutes. After Columbia held Maine standout Gerald McLemore to just two points in the first half, McLemore came out firing to start the second half, giving his team renewed life. McLemore drained a pair of threes in the first three minutes of the second half as the Black Bears quickly erased Columbia s nine-point halftime lead. The game remained close for much of the second half. When Steve Egee was fouled on a three-point attempt and calmly hit all three of his free throws, Columbia held a lead with 13 minutes to go. Murphy Burnatowski came back on Maine s next possession and hit a three to give the Black Bears the lead for good. Columbia came back within a point on three different occasions, but Maine held onto its edge and eventually took a seven-point lead, 61-54, on a pair of free throws by Junior Bernal. Scott came back down to nail a long triple and after Bernal missed two free throws on the other end, Scott converted two from the line to bring the Lions back to within two, 61-59, as the Levien Gym crowd was on its feet in support of Columbia s comeback. McLemore hit one of two from the line with 29.5 seconds left, but Columbia was unable to tie in the final seconds. McLemore and Burnatowski combined to make three of four from the line for the final margin. Scott led Columbia with a season-best 16 while Brian Grimes had a tremendous second half (12 points, five rebounds) to finish with 14 points and eight boards. Game 12 Columbia 56, American 51 NEW YORK Despite losing a pair of starters to injury in the first half, Columbia battled back from an early deficit and put together its best defensive effort of the season to pull out a win over American at Levien Gym. Noruwa Agho had a team-high 21 points with four steals in a gutty performance but it was the reserves who sparked the Lions on Monday night. Columbia received enormous second-half contributions from Kevin Bulger, Zack Crimmins and a career-high 18 points with seven rebounds from Asenso Ampim, including 14 points in a terrific second half. Trailing by seven at halftime, American strung together a 16-6 run over five and a half minutes to take a brief lead on a three-pointer by the 6-10 Riley Grafft with 10:53 left in the contest. Ampim then scored Columbia s next seven points as the Lions took a lead but a layup on the other by American s Stephen Lumpkins tied the score at 41 with 5:32 remaining. Crimmins then provided a huge boost, starting with a three-point play to give the Lions a lead. After there was a scrum in the paint for a loose ball, Niko Scott found Crimmins, who muscled in the layup and then sank the free throw. On the next possession, Crimmins used a nice touch to make a turnaround hook shot to give the Lions a fivepoint cushion, 46-41, with four minutes to play. Following a media timeout, Lumpkins basket cut the Columbia lead to three but the Lions came down the court and Bulger drilled a three ball right in front of the Columbia bench to push the Lions lead back to six, 49-43, at the three-minute mark. A Nick Hendra three-pointer with 34 seconds left made it a game and American had a couple chances to tie but could not convert. With Columbia ahead with 13 seconds left in the game, Ampim capped his stellar performance by sinking two free throws to give the Lions an important four-point lead as the Lions held on for their fourth win in five games this season at Levien Gym.
