His first double-double came at Bradley last season when he notched 12 points and 16 rebounds; he posted another 10-point performance to lead UE to a win over Yale Boarding It Up - Through the first four games of the campaign, UE found itself being outrebounded by an average of 10 per game; that all changed in the wins over Tennessee Tech and Alabama A&M as the Aces were on the better end of the final tally, finishing with an average of 8 more rebounds than the opposition - Last season, Evansville had just one two-game streak of outrebounding its opponents, doing so against Bradley and Illinois State Defensive Streak - Evansville s defense turned it up in a November 3-game win streak, holding WIU, TTU and AAMU to just 46.7 PPG while holding WIU and TTU to under 20 points in a half (AAMU had 21 in the first half); large runs have been key in those contests; in the win over WIU, the Aces held the Leathernecks scoreless over a span of 8:28 in the second half, forcing them to miss all five shots along with eight turnovers; a similar run in the first half at Tennessee Tech saw UE go on a 20-2 run while holding the Golden Eagles to 1-11 shooting over that span; the defense was at it again versus the Bulldogs, in the first half, the Aces went on a 22-3 run while holding AAMU without a field goal over the span of 8:55 RPI TeamRankings.com (March 28) Top ten + UE opponents Team Rating High Low Last 1 Duke (29-5) Louisville (31-5) New Mexico (29-6) Miami (FL) (29-6) Kansas (31-5) Michigan St (26-8) Indiana (29-6) Ohio State (28-7) Gonzaga (31-3) Florida (28-7) Butler (26-9) Creighton (28-8) Colorado St (24-9) Wichita St (28-8) Notre Dame (25-10) N Iowa (20-14) Indiana St (17-15) E Kentucky (23-10) Evansville (20-14) E Carolina (17-12) Illinois St (18-15) TN State (16-15) Canisius (20-14) Murray St (19-10) Wright State (22-13) Drake (14-17) W Illinois (20-9) Bradley (18-17) S Illinois (13-17) Yale (12-17) Missouri St (9-22) Buffalo (12-20) TN Tech (10-17) Miami (OH) (8-22) Alabama St (9-22) Alab A&M (9-20) *Counts Division I wins only University of Evansville MEN S Basketball 12

Coaches vs. Cancer Classic - Evansville is proud to be associated with the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic for the first time. The tournament began in 1995 and 1996 in a showcase format before becoming a tournament in 1997 with Princeton winning the inaugural event. Since its inception, Coaches vs. Cancer has raised almost $85 million to support the fight against cancer. The first four games of this season were a part of the tournament as UE fell at Notre Dame before winning two out of three contests at the Ford Center. Evansville fell to Buffalo before rallying to defeat Yale and Western Illinois. - WIU failed to hit a three-pointer in the Nov. 17 contest, the first time UE had not allowed a trey since Bradley failed to hit one against UE on Feb. 17, After suffering a hip pointer in the loss to Buffalo, Colt Ryan saw just ten minutes of action in the three-game tournament at the Ford Center; despite the loss, Evansville rallied to pick up victories over Yale and Western Illinois Preseason Poll - For the second-straight year, the University of Evansville was picked to finish fifth in the Valley. Last season, UE surpassed the pick, taking the third seed for the 2012 MVC Tournament and the Aces seem poised to repeat that feat this year as they return four seniors who will be the core of UE s squad. Looking Towards The Future - It was recently announced that freshman David Howard will redshirt this season. That will give him the opportunity to work ahead and learn UE s system entering next season with a great chance of making an immediate impact. Season Openers - Evansville opened its 94th season of basketball against Notre Dame. The Aces fell to all-time in their season-opening contests with the loss, ending a streak of four season-opening wins in a row. Preseason Notes A Lot To Look Forward To - Fresh off of its best MVC effort in 13 years, the Aces have plenty to be excited about heading into the season. Evansville is set to return three starters and 11 letterwinners, which comprise 69.3% of its scoring, 77.9% of its rebounding, 68.4% of the squad s assists and over 70% of the team s minutes from The Aces used an overtime win in the regular season finale over Missouri State to move from the possibility of being as low as eighth in the league to a final finish of third. Big Shoes To Fill - Two slots in the starting lineup are available following the graduation of Denver Holmes and Kenneth Harris. Holmes started 89 games in his UE career before finishing with 975 points. The Olathe Kan. native was the top free throw shooter in the Valley last season, hitting 87.3% of his attempts. In two seasons with the Aces, Harris made 63 starts, including all 32 as a senior. He posted 617 points in his time at UE while recording 327 rebounds. Looking to fill those slots will be seniors Ned Cox and Lewis Jones, who each played in all 32 games in their junior years. A Home Of Their Own - With the hectic schedule at the downtown Ford Center, the Aces were forced to move their practices on campus to the Carson Center. With the schedules of other UE sports along with the university as a whole, the time that the Aces had on the practice floor got to be limited at times. That all will change in October with the opening of the Fifth Third Basketball Practice Facility. Built at a cost of over $3 million, the structure will have floors for both the UE men s and women s teams along with new offices and a lounge for both squads Season-In-Review Notes Playing Against The Best - The Missouri Valley Conference proved that it is one of the best in the country as it sent seven out of ten teams to postseason play in Evansville was one of those squads, advancing to its second consecutive CBI. The Aces played 32 games in with 21 of those against postseason teams. Thirteen of its opponents also advanced to the postseason. In all, seven of UE s games came against teams that made it to the NCAA Tournament University of Evansville MEN S Basketball 13

14 Just The Second Time - In the 2012 Missouri Valley Tournament, the Aces went in as the No. 3 seed, the second-highest ever while advancing to Saturday s semifinals for just the second time. It was a stark turnaround for a team that entered the tournament with just a 4-17 mark in its previous 17 tries. Evansville began with a victory over Missouri State, earning the season sweep of the Bears. The win marked Evansville s fifth Arch Madness victory. With the three-game sweep of Missouri State, the Aces completed their second ever three-game sweep, the other came in 1999 when UE was a perfect 3-0 over Wichita State. We re Back - For the third time in four years and the tenth time since entering Division I in 1977, the University of Evansville played in the postseason. In 2009, only Coach Simmons second season, he led the Aces to the CIT where they squared off against Belmont. Last year, UE picked up its first postseason win since the 1989 NCAA Tournament win over Oregon State in the opening round win over Hofstra. It has been almost 20 years since UE accomplished the feat as Jim Crews led UE to three-straight postseason berths, including two NCAA tournaments, from Coaching Them Up - Since his arrival at UE in 2007, head coach Marty Simmons has steadily turned the program around. In three of the last four years, Simmons has finished in the top six in the league after the program had done so just once in the eight seasons before His squads have shown vast improvement against top competition, winning three of his last five games versus ranked opponents. Prior to that streak, Evansville had fallen in ten-consecutive games against top-25 squads. With a regular season mark in , Simmons helped UE to its first back-to-back winning regular seasons since through Making The Adjustment - For the first time since 1956, the Purple Aces opened a home arena as they began play at the Ford Center in downtown Evansville in In their first season at the home venue, UE posted an 11-7 mark which included wins over Butler and nationally-ranked Creighton. Evansville got more comfortable with its new surroundings as the season went on, winning its final four regular season home games at the Ford Center. Award-Winning Performances: First Team Honor - Junior Colt Ryan became just the fifth player to be named to the MVC All-Conference First Team and the first to garner the honor since Shy Ely did so in 2009 (Marcus Wilson was named on two occasions). Ryan led UE and was second in the MVC, averaging 20.5 points per game while tying for the league lead in steals, swiping two a game. The three-time MVC Player of the Week scored a career-high 43 points last week against Creighton before tallying 12 in Saturday s win over Missouri State. Ryan was also named to the CollegeHoops.net All-MVC Team. On Thursday, Ryan was named the MVC Scholar Athlete fo the Year. Sixth Man - Coming off the bench can be a tough task, but don t tell that to junior Ned Cox, who showed that the role suits him better than anyone else in the MVC. It is that attitude that helped Cox earn Sixth Man of the Year honors. After averaging 7.3 PPG a season ago, Cox saw his average rise by two points. He has ten double-digit scoring efforts, led by a pair of 20-point outings. In a November contest at Illinois Chicago, he set his career mark with 24 points as he hit 9-of-13 shots. He followed that up with a 22-point performance at Indiana State where he was a perfect 4-4 from long range. Cox made two starts for the Aces, scoring 16 points against Oakland City before leading Evansville with 17 points in a start in the regular season finale against Missouri State. He is the second Aces to be honored with the award; Curt Begle picked up the award in Honor For The Young Gun - Making the All-Freshman Team was Ryan Sawvell. He got better as the season went on, scoring 10 or more points in a span of seven out of 11 contests in January and February. Sawvell s top scoring game came against Drake where he knocked down seven shots to score 14 points. In UE s win at Bradley, Sawvell hauled in 16 rebounds, the most a UE player has had this season. He has been an extremely accurate shooter, hitting 61.7% of his attempts, a tally that would be in the top ten in the nation with enough tries. Sawvell is the 10th UE player to be named an All-Freshman player. Playing Some D - One of the pleasant surprises for Evansville last season was junior Troy Taylor. The point guard, and the leading rebounder for UE, was named to the All-Defensive Team. Taylor leads the Aces with 5.1 rebounds per game while contributing in other facets Home Court Advantage In 55 seasons at Roberts Stadium, the Aces amassed an amazing.723 winning percentage, capturing 604 games. 25 Marty Simmons - Head Coach - 6th Year Hometown - Lawrenceville, Ill. Education - Evansville 87 Bringing the University of Evansville basketball program back to glory was the goal for Marty Simmons when he took the head coaching position at UE in Five years into the process, it can be said that Simmons is well on his way to bringing the Purple Aces back onto the national scene. In three of the past four seasons, he has led the Aces to the postseason, including berths in the College Basketball Invitational in each of the last two years. He helped Evansville to its top MVC finish in over ten years, leading UE to a third place finish in 2012 while leading the Aces into the seimfinals for just the second time since entering the league in While last season was a roller coaster ride, it is obvious to everyone that the UE program is on its way back to the top. With a regular-season mark in , Simmons helped the Aces finish the regular season over.500 for the third time in four seasons, something that had not been done since the 1990 s. Evansville has also enjoyed success against the top competition in the nation, winning three of its last five games against ranked opponents after failing to defeat one in the ten years prior. Simmons success has been noticed by his peers. In three of the past four years, he has finished among the top four in voting for Missouri Valley Conference Coach of the Year. Most recently, he finished second in the voting in 2012 after leading UE to a third-place finish in the league. That came after 2011 when Simmons Purple Aces finished 9-9 in the MVC and in sixth place after being voted 10th in the pre-season poll. The Aces went on to achieve their first post-season victory since 1989 by defeating Hofstra in the first round of the College Basketball Invitational. Simmons returned to his alma mater as head coach in the spring of His first squad finished 9-21, bu t one year later, in , Simmons led his Aces to a record and a berth in the inaugural CollegeInsider.com Post-season Tournament. For his efforts, Simmons finished third in balloting for MVC Coach of the Year, trailing only the coaches who led their teams to a co-championship. The Aces achieved Evansville s best winning percentage since 2000, and first post-season appearance since 1999, when Simmons was an assistant coach with the Aces. Senior Shy Ely was second in voting for Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year, and senior Jason Holsinger earned Academic All-America honors. Prior to his return to Evansville in 2007, Simmons served as head coach for five years at Division II Southern Illinois University- Edwardsville, where he took over a program that had not won 10 games since 1999 and led the Cougars to 23 wins in 2005 and 25 in SI UE reached the NCAA NCAA Tournament in 2005 for the first time in 15 years, and Simmons was chosen as Great Lakes Valley Coach of the Year. His 2006 squad did even better, winning three games in the NCAA NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships and advancing to the Elite Eight. SI UE appeared in the national rankings 16 weeks. A native of Lawrenceville, Ill., Simmons led Lawrenceville High School to back to back Class A state championships and became one of the most celebrated players in Illinois prep history. Simmons spent his first two years of college at Indiana. It was during Indiana s NIT run in 1985 when Indiana University assistant coach Jim Crews was chosen as Evansville s head coach. Two months later, Simmons transferred to Evansville. Already designated as the Aces team captain while sitting out his redshirt season, Simmons immediately helped turn around the UE program when he became eligible in He averaged 22.4 points as a junior and led Evansville to a first place tie in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference. As a senior, he finished sixth in the nation in scoring at 25.9, and finished ninth in balloting for the Associated Press College Basketball Player of the Year. Despite playing only two seasons at Evansville, he ranks 22nd with 1,265 points. Marty and his wife, Angie, who grew up in nearby Newburgh, have four children: Brittany, Kelsey, Blake, and Cole.
