2 NMU PREVIEW OUTLOOK Troy Mattson enters his second year on the Northern Michigan University women s basketball bench. He led the Wildcats to a 6-19 overall record for the season and a 2-16 mark in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC), which was good for seventh in the North Division. Mattson will almost have a new cast of players to insert into the line-up. Five letterwinners return from last year s squad while six do not return. Four of the five starters return to the team. Tera Opperman was the lone senior on the squad last year. She averaged almost 11 points a game (10.9 ppg). Opperman led the Cats last year with 57 three-pointers and was second with 52 assists. Others letterwinners who did not come back include: Lauren Bartelli, Danicia Braun, Angela Britton, Grace Farrell and Aimee Kovinchick. Mattson will still have a fairly young team as nine new student-athletes join the roster in his second year of the rebuilding process. We have to defend and rebound, Mattson said. We have to take care of the basketball. GUARDS Kelsey Deacon will be given the keys to run the offense from the point guard spot. She averaged a little under 10 points a game last year (9.8 ppg), but led the Cats with 57 assists. Deacon was third on the team in three-pointers at for.322 percent. The other veteran who could see some time at the point is Maria Kasza, who started all 25 games last year. She was third on the team last year with 50 assists. Kasza was second behind Opperman in three-pointers, going for.387 percent. She had 111 rebounds (4.4 rpg), which was good for second on the team. From the floor, Kasza was for.360 percent. Jenna Williams is the question mark for the Cats. She played in 13 games last year before going down with the second knee injury of her basketball career. During her limited time of action she averaged 5.2 ppg to go along with her 19 assists. Williams was from beyond the three-point line (.319 percent) which ended up fourth on the team for Freshman Natalie Larocque will be looked to for some relief at the point. She is 5-7 from Quebec City, Quebec. Redshirt freshman Christa Erickson could also find her way into the mix. FORWARDS A potential strength to the team will rest along the wings. Allison Carroll headlines this group. She led the team last year with 351 points (14.0 ppg) and 112 rebounds (4.5 rpg). Carroll had a team-high 141 field goals in 284 attempts for a shooting percentage of.496. She led the Cats with 16 blocked shots. Allison needs to average between 16 to 18 points a game, Mattson said. We need to get her to shoot the ball more. The other letterwinner returning is Cassi Rushford, who can play as a forward or post-up when she has to down on the blocks. Last year she averaged 3.8 ppg and 3.4 rpg. Three newcomers should provide dividends to the Cats. Leading the group is Michigan Tech transfer Cassie Hegbloom (5-11) from Ishpeming. Freshmen Erin Girard (5-11) from Chassell and LaShawn Lambert (5-10) from Cleveland, Ohio should add immediate depth. According to Mattson, Hegbloom will be looked to stop the other team s top scorer and battle for the rebounds. Other newcomers include Nicole Grengs (5-10) from Marquette, Kelsey Hoffmann (5-11) from Appleton, Wis. and Nathalie Romao (5-11), a junior college transfer from Montreal, Quebec. CENTER Angie Leckson (6-1) is the lone true center on the roster. The freshman from Garden, Mich., and Big Bay de Noc High School will be looked to learn on the job with some quality minutes. Carroll will also see time at this position. SCHEDULE A challenging non-conference schedule should prepare the team for a chase of a GLIAC Tournament berth. Non-conference teams the Cats face are as Emporia State, Northern Kentucky, MSU-Moorhead, St. Cloud State and UM- Duluth. Grand Valley State, Ferris State, Lake Superior State and Michigan Tech look like the teams the Cats are going to chase in the GLIAC standings. The Cats were picked seventh in the GLIAC preseason poll. A major accomplishment for this year s team would be a spot in the GLIAC Tournament. For the Cats to make this happen they must improve and buy into Mattson s system to be able to reach that goal. The pieces are there for that to happen. We have to do the little things to compete against every team in the conference, Mattson said. 2

23 THE HOME OF THE WILDCATS The Berry Events Center is in its eighth season as the home of the Northern Michigan University Berry women's basketball team in Opened in August, 1999, the Berry is the newest of Northern Michigan s athletic facilities. The facility is named after John W. Berry, Jr., a 1971 graduate of Northern Michigan University, who donated $2 million to the project. Berry is a longtime NMU supporter. He is the CEO of Berry Investment, Inc., of Dayton, Ohio, Accusport Corporation, Microwave Sensors, Berry Braiding, Inc., and Mad River Sportman s Club. He is also the retired president of The Berry Co., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bell South Corporation, one of the world s largest publishers of telephone directories. The nearly $11 million facility provides individual seating for approximately 4,000 fans, in addition to 16 luxury boxes, which includes a President s Suite. Along the perimeter of the arena are four large concession areas as well as standing room for approximately 400 fans. The Berry Events Center is not only home to the NMU basketball teams, but also the NMU hockey team and the United States Olympic Education Center Short Track speedskating team. During the majority of the year, the arena features an Olympic-size ice sheet measuring 200' x 100'. When rigged for basketball, the court is placed on a insulated floor that covers the ice. In addition, seating for 500 fans is place courtside, as well as a scorer s table and band area. The Berry also features locker rooms and support areas for the men s and women s basketball teams, the men s ice hockey team, and the speedskating team, along with four general-use locker rooms. In addition, skate rental and changing areas are located on the lower level of the complex. The arena is also designed to host concerts and university events and is equipped with moveable theatrical rigging and lighting. 23
