The Sooners are set to battle the Kansas Jayhawks in their final match before postseason play for the second year in a row. This year, the stakes have shifted: in 2013, the two teams squared off as the conference s eighth and ninth-place teams, with the final slot in the Big 12 Soccer Championship field up for grabs. This season, both squads have emerged as Big 12 contenders and have already locked up their spots in the tournament field. 2. FINDING MOMENTUM With next week s conference tournament on the horizon, the Sooners will look to gain positive momentum to carry onward to Kansas City. OU will face a 14th-ranked KU squad that has dropped two of its last three matches, but regained footing last weekend with a 2-1 victory over Iowa State. Kansas can secure the No. 2 seed overall in the tournament with a win, while an Oklahoma victory would move the squad one step closer to a No. 6 seed. 3. TIGHTEN UP OU s loss to West Virginia last week marked the first time all season the team has allowed more than two goals in a match. Oklahoma will look to get back to its defensive roots against Kansas on Friday night: following Oklahoma s first weekend of conference play, the squad had surrendered only nine matches in 13 total contests. 4. SPOOKY WIN Friday night s contest marks Oklahoma s fifth Halloween match in program history. The Sooners last won on Oct. 31 in 1999, posting a 3-0 road victory over Arkansas. In regular season finales, the Sooners own a mark all-time. Oklahoma s last win in a regular season finale came on Oct. 28, 2011 at Kansas, when the team picked up a 3-0 victory. 5. NOVEMBER HUNT Oklahoma continues a stretch of play that will be crucial in determining its postseason fate this weekend. The Sooners enter Friday s match at overall, with one regular season contest and a conference tournament ahead. OU owns two NCAA Championship appearances all-time, breaking into the championship field in both 2003 and Head coach Matt Potter owns three career NCAA appearances, all with Washington State and the last coming in PLAYER TO WATCH No. 14 Kansas (15-3-0, Big 12) JAYHAWKS #8 ABBY HODGEN - Sr. - Yukon, Okla. Team co-captain Abby Hodgen will play the final regular season match of her career at John Crain Field on Friday night. The senior has never started fewer than 13 matches in a season for Oklahoma and owns 66 career starts as a midfielder at OU. Hodgen has posted one goal this season and leads the Sooners in shots with 32 total attempts. Potter also helped guide two freshmen to solid seasons with midfielders Jemma Cota and Paige Jacobs earning selections to the All-Big 12 Newcomer team. Potter led Oklahoma to a record in his first season as head coach, the most wins by a rookie head coach in Sooner history. Potter s squad also qualified to the program s third consecutive Big 12 tournament, another first. Senior Renae Cuellar was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, NCAA Division I All-Central Region first team by the National Soccer HEAD COACH MATT POTTER teams ranked in at least one top-25 poll. The squad also owns a mark against top-10 teams. Prior to last weekend, Oklahoma had not lost more than two matches in a row all season. OU owns six Big 12 weekly awards this year, its highest total since the conference began honoring players in Kaitlyn Fahrner has been named Defensive Player of the Week three times, while Chelsea Jackson, Lizzie Luallin and Laura Rayfield each own one Newcomer of the Week award. Head coach Matt Potter achieved his 100th career victory in Bedlam on Aug. 22 against Oklahoma State. Potter owns 107 wins all-time and 19 at Oklahoma. MATCH BITS: KANSAS Kansas enters this weekend second in the Big 12 standings with a conference mark of KU is overall this season, the third-best win total in program history. The Jayhawks own conference wins over Baylor, TCU, Oklahoma State, Texas and Iowa State. The squad s two losses came at the hands of Texas Tech (1-0) and West Virginia (2-0). Junior midfielder Liana Salazar is No. 2 in the conference in shots (53), points (26) and goals (11) this season. KU has spent nine consecutive weeks ranked in at least one top-25 poll, peaking as high as No. 9 nationally on Oct. 13.
