Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. The Jaguars have a record in the preseason in their 15 seasons including in the last seven years under head coach Jack Del Rio. They have posted a.500 record or better in six of seven preseasons under Del Rio. The Jaguars finished the 2009 season with a NFL-high 16 rookies on the roster and they combined to make 71 starts, the most in franchise history. Despite the roster turnover, the Jaguars were not eliminated from the playoffs until the final weekend of the regular season. Second-year general manager Gene Smith and his staff produced nine players in the 2009 draft who remain on the club s roster. The club s first five draft choices from a year ago combined to make 64 starts. DT Terrance Knighton and CB Derek Cox started every game, the first rookie duo to accomplish the feat in the same season. Of the 22 projected starters in 2010, 19 made multiple starts for the club in The Jaguars used the draft to select six players including defensive linemen with the first four picks. DT Tyson Alualu was selected with the 10th overall pick and he is expected to start on the defensive line. The club was active in free agency highlighted by the addition of ninth-year DE Aaron Kampman and three-time special teams Pro Bowl selection Kassim Osgood. LB Kirk Morrison was acquired via trade with Oakland during the draft and he starts in the middle of the defense. Of the Jaguars 80 roster players, 32 are new to the team. The Jaguars return two Pro Bowlers on offense in RB Maurice Jones-Drew and QB David Garrard. Jones- Drew ranked fourth in the NFL with 1,391 rushing yards a year ago and set the franchise single-season record with 15 touchdowns. Garrard is in his fourth season as the starter and has compiled a career record. He is one of only nine NFL quarterbacks to start all 32 games the last two seasons. LB Daryl Smith returns after leading the defense with 150 tackles and nine tackles for loss a year ago. TELEVISION: The game will be broadcast by WTEV CBS47 (Ch. 6 cable) in Jacksonville as well as in Orlando (WRBW), Gainesville (WMYG), Tallahassee (WTXL), and Savannah, Ga. (WSAV). NFL Network broadcaster Paul Burmeister will handle play-by-play duties for the fourth straight year with former Jaguars Pro Bowl tackle Tony Boselli providing analysis. RADIO: Friday s game will be broadcast on the Jaguars Radio Network which extends to 10 affiliates in Florida and Georgia. The Jaguars flagship stations are WOKV AM & FM (690, 106.5). Brian Sexton (play-by-play) and former Jaguars defensive end Jeff Lageman (analyst) are in their eighth season together calling all Jaguars games. Sexton has called every Jaguars game in franchise history. SERIES HISTORY: The Jaguars and Eagles are meeting for the second consecutive year in the preseason with both games played in Philadelphia. The Eagles outlasted the Jaguars, 33-32, on August 27, 2009 during week three of the preseason. The Jaguars have won all three of the clubs regular season meetings including a 13-6 win on October 29, 2006 at Philadelphia. 4 JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS AT PHILADELPHIA EAGLES, AUGUST 13, 2010 JAGUARS/EAGLES SERIES HISTORY JAGUARS/EAGLES 2009 STATISTICAL COMPARISON This will be the second consecutive meeting between the teams at Philadelphia in the preseason with the Eagles edging the Jaguars, 33-32, in The Jaguars have won all three games in the regular season series including a 13-6 win in 2006 at Philadelphia. The game was the Jaguars first trip to Philadelphia since the club s inception in 1995, a span of 12 seasons and 182 games. 5 HEAD COACH JACK DEL RIO DEL RIO IN 8TH SEASON AS HEAD COACH: Jack Del Rio is in his eighth season as the Jaguars head coach, one of only six current NFL head coaches who have been with his current team more than seven seasons. Del Rio was named to the post on January 17, 2003, becoming the second head coach in Jaguars history. Del Rio ranks ninth among active coaches with a regular season record of He is one of just 11 current NFL head coaches to earn 50 wins. In 2007, the Jaguars posted an 11-5 regular season record to earn the second playoff berth in three years, in addition to the franchise s first playoff win since the 1999 season. The Jaguars are one of only seven teams to rank in the top 13 in both offense and defense since Del Rio is in his 25th year in the NFL, his 14th as a coach. Del Rio spent 11 years as an NFL linebacker and had a standout college career at the University of Southern California. He previously coached in New Orleans ( ), Baltimore ( ), and Carolina (2002). He was the Panthers defensive coordinator, and in his only season with the club the defense improved from last in the NFL to second, the biggest one-season defensive improvement in NFL history. Del Rio was the linebackers coach for three seasons in Baltimore, where the Ravens defense also ranked second each season. He helped the team win Super Bowl XXXV over the New York Giants and coached the Ravens talented linebackers, overseeing the development of Peter Boulware, Jamie Sharper and Ray Lewis, the NFL s Defensive Player of the Year in 2000 and the MVP of Super Bowl XXXV. Prior to coaching, Del Rio played 11 seasons in the NFL, with New Orleans ( ), Kansas City ( ), Dallas ( ) and Minnesota ( ), playing in the Pro Bowl following the 1994 season. Del Rio was a starter at linebacker for Southern California ( ), where he earned All-America honors, was a runner-up for the Lombardi Award and co-mvp of the 1985 Rose Bowl. Del Rio is one of two NFL head coaches (Jeff Fisher) who graduated from USC. Del Rio has learned from some of the best coaches in all of football. He was recruited to USC and played for John Robinson, and in the NFL he played under Bum Phillips, Jim Mora, Jimmy Johnson and Dennis Green. As an assistant coach, he has worked for Hall of Famer Mike Ditka and Super Bowl winner Brian Billick, as well as Super Bowl participant John Fox. Among other notable coaches Del Rio has worked with are Dom Capers, Tony Dungy, Dave Wannstedt, Monte Kiffin, Mike Tice, Tom Moore, Norv Turner, Mike Smith and Butch Davis. Drafted by baseball s Toronto Blue Jays, Del Rio batted.340 while playing catcher on USC s baseball team in 1983 and 1984 with future stars Randy Johnson and Mark McGwire. He was a third-round choice by the New Orleans Saints in 1985 and was named to the NFL s All-Rookie team. 11 POSITION-BY-POSITION Here is a position-by-position breakdown of the 2010 Jaguars: QUARTERBACKS (3) David Garrard, a fourth-round draft pick in 2002, returns for his fourth season as the starter after being named to his first Pro Bowl in Garrard owns a record as a starter with 66 touchdown passes and an 84.9 career passer rating. In 2009, Garrard completed 60.9 percent of his passes for 3,597 yards with 15 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for an 83.5 rating. He recorded three 300-yard passing games. Sixth-year veteran Luke McCown was acquired via trade from Tampa Bay prior to the 2009 season-opener and he backed up Garrard for all 16 games. McCown, a fourth-round pick of Cleveland in 2004, has played in 15 career games with seven starts. He was acquired via trade by Tampa Bay in His career totals include 143 of 241 passing for 1,619 yards with nine touchdowns and 10 interceptions for a 74.7 rating. The Jaguars added undrafted rookie Trevor Harris from Edinboro. Harris threw for 11,899 yards and 100 touchdowns in four seasons as a starter and was a two-time Harlon Hill finalist for the Division II player of the year. RUNNING BACKS (7) The backfield is led by 2009 Pro Bowl selection Maurice Jones- Drew. Jones-Drew, a second-round pick in 2006, ranks second in the NFL with 56 touchdowns (49 rushing, 5 receiving, 2 returns) the past four seasons. Jones-Drew tied for second in the NFL with 16 touchdowns in 2009 and ranked fourth in rushing yards (1,391). He had five 100-yard rushing games including a career-high 177 on Nov. 1 at Tennessee and two games with three touchdowns seventh-round pick Rashad Jennings earned a roster spot as a rookie and backed up Jones-Drew. Jennings finished with 39 rushes for 202 yards and one touchown. The Jaguars added Deji Karim in the fifth round of this year s draft and he will also return kicks. Karim rushed for 2,080 yards and 26 touchdowns in two seasons at Southern Illinois. Undrafted rookie Chad Kackert competes for a roster spot. Fullback Greg Jones returns at fullback after ending the 2009 season on injured reserve with an ankle injury. Jones has career totals of 261 rushes for 892 yards and nine touchdowns. Montell Owens also sees action at fullback and excels on special teams. Owens, who led the team with a franchise-record tying 30 special teams tackles in 2009, was voted the AFC s first alternate special teams player for the Pro Bowl. First-year pro Brock Bolen played in three games as a rookie and he competes for a roster spot at fullback. WIDE RECEIVERS (10) Perhaps the most competitive position at training camp is the battle for roster spots at receiver. Mike Sims-Walker, a 2007 thirdround pick, returns as one starter after leading the team with a career-high 63 receptions for 869 yards and seven touchdowns in Sims-Walker, who had three 100-yard receiving games in 2009, had the most receiving yards by a Jaguars wide receiver since The Jaguars added three wideouts in last year s draft with Mike Thomas (4th round), Jarett Dillard (5th round) and Tiquan Underwood (7th round) and all three remain on the roster. Thomas set a franchise record for a rookie with 48 receptions along with 453 yards. Dillard, who is on PUP, suffered an ankle injury in week 10 and was placed on injured reserve. Underwood appeared in three games as a rookie and is coming off an impressive offseason. Eighth-year pro Kassim Osgood was added through free agency. Osgood, 6-5, 220, has been voted the AFC s special teams player for the Pro Bowl in three of the last four seasons. He competes for a role at receiver and has 33 career receptions for 647 yards and four touchdowns. Troy Williamson, who is in his sixth NFL season, returns from a shoulder injury that sidelined him for 14 games in He has played in 49 games with 25 starts since he was selected seventh overall by Minnesota in 2005, recording 87 receptions for 1,131 yards and four touchdowns. First-year pros Clarence Denmark and John Matthews along with undrafted rookies Roren Thomas and Derrick Townsel are competing for a roster spot. TIGHT ENDS (5) Former first-round pick Marcedes Lewis enters his fifth NFL season after being selected with the club s first-round pick in Lewis, who led the team with a 16.2 average per reception in 2009, made 32 receptions for a career-high 518 yards and two touchdowns. He has 123 career receptions for 1,524 yards and seven touchdowns sixth-round pick Zach Miller made the transition from college quarterback to tight end and provides the team with a major threat in the passing game. Miller played in 14 games as a rookie and finished with 21 receptions for 212 yards and two touchdowns. Former fourth round pick Ernest Wilford rejoined the Jaguars in 2009 after spending the previous season with Miami. Wilford has played in 85 career games and totaled 155 receptions for 2,142 yards and 15 touchdowns. First-year pro Zach Potter spent the majority of the 2009 season on the club s practice squad and he returns to compete for a roster spot along with undrafted rookie Mike Caussin. OFFENSIVE LINE (13) The Jaguars have a mix of veterans and youth battling for roster spots along the offensive line.the club selected tackles Eugene Monroe (1st round) and Eben Britton (2nd round) in the 2009 draft and they became the first rookies to start at tackle on opening day in franchise history. Britton started 15 of 16 games at right tackle while Monroe made 13 starts at left tackle. Center Brad Meester returns for his 11th NFL season and ranks second in franchise history with 145 starts. Meester started all 16 games in First-year pro Cecil Newton and undrafted rookie John Estes are competing for a roster spot at center. The starters at the two guard positions will be determined in the preseason with a host of veterans competing for spots including fourth-year pro Uche Nwaneri. Nwaneri can play both guard and center and has started 29 of 41 games (16 at LG, 13 at RG) since joining the club as a fifth-round pick in Vince Manuwai competes at right guard after starting 94 of 95 games at left guard in seven seasons. Kynan Forney is in his 10th season and joined the Jaguars prior to the 2009 season-opener. He has played in 98 games with 88 starts including three games for the Jaguars. The Jaguars acquired veteran guard Justin Smiley in a trade with Miami on May 25. Smiley has played in 83 games with 73 starts (40 at LG, 33 at RG) for San Francisco and Miami. Veteran Jordan Black has played in 65 games with 31 starts over six seasons and he can play multiple positions along the line. Black saw extensive action in short-yardage situations in Paul McQuistan was signed on Nov. 21 and spent the remainder of the season with the club.
