CONNECTING WITH THE Facebook: YouTube: TEXAS HEADS TO DALLAS FOR RED RIVER SHOWDOWN: Texas and No. 11/9 Oklahoma will meet up Saturday in Dallas for the AT&T Red River Showdown which is scheduled for 11 a.m. Central at the Cotton Bowl. Both teams are coming off losses, with Texas falling 28-7 at home to No. 7/6 Baylor and Oklahoma upended, 37-33, at No. 25/25 TCU. DEFENSE STOUT, BUT HORNS FALL TO BAYLOR: Texas held Baylor s highpowered offense in check for much of the game Saturday, but the Bears used two key special teams plays and a big second half to propel their way to a 28-7 win over the Longhorns. Texas totaled 334 yards of offense as Johnathan Gray rushed for 79 yards and Tyrone Swoopes completed 16 of 34 passes for 144 yards. Turnovers were costly, however, with Swoopes throwing two interceptions and losing a fumble at Baylor s 1-yard line. Baylor QB Bryce Petty was stymied by Texas defense as the senior completed just 7 of 22 passes for 111 yards, though he connected on a pair of touchdown passes. The Bears were held without an offensive TD for the first 38 minutes of the game. 109TH AT&T RED RIVER SHOWDOWN: A classic matchup is once again in place as one of the nation s oldest and most-unique rivalries the Texas/ Oklahoma series is set for its 109th renewal on Saturday at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas. The rivalry, which pits the two Big 12 Conference foes on a neutral field with the crowd split evenly, is in its ninth year of sponsorship with AT&T and is officially tagged the AT&T Red River Showdown. The two teams alternate as hosts of the game and the Sooners are the home team this year. Texas will wear white jerseys and be seated on the visitor bench (east/opposite press box side). BIG-TIME RIVALRY: There is no rivalry quite like the Texas/Oklahoma series, which is being played for the 109th time. The series, which began in 1900, has been played in Dallas since 1912 and at the Cotton Bowl since Dallas Cotton Bowl is located an equal distance from Austin and Norman, Okla. The stadium is split evenly among Longhorn and Sooner fans at the 50-yard line. It is the secondoldest UT series and tied for the 19th most-played rivalry in NCAA history. Only Texas A&M has met Texas on more occasions (117 times). Since 1900, the only years Texas and Oklahoma have not met were 1918, 20, 21 and The series resumed in 1929 at the State Fair of Texas and has remained a fixture since. This is the 92nd meeting in Dallas between the teams. Texas holds a series lead, including a edge in Dallas. The teams have split the last 10 meetings. UT is the only Big 12 Conference team that holds an all-time series lead against the Sooners. As for records by decade, Oklahoma led 6-4 in the 2000s, while the Horns led in the 1990s. That comes after the Sooners held a advantage in the 1980s. The rest of the series records by decade saw UT lead in the 1900s; OU lead 6-3 in the 1910s; UT lead 3-0 in the 1920s; UT lead in the 1930s; UT lead 8-2 in the 1940s; OU lead 7-3 in the 1950s; UT lead 9-1 in the 1960s; and OU lead in the 1970s. The Longhorns have combined for 20 sacks over the first five games and rank tied for third in the FBS (4.0 per game). Twelve players have been involved in a sack this season. DT Malcom Brown and LB Steve Edmond share the team lead with 3.5 sacks apiece. Brown and Edmond rank tied for 47th in the FBS (0.70 per game), and Ridgeway is tied for 72nd (0.60 pg). Baylor entered last week s game as one of only two teams in the nation not to allow a sack (also New Mexico State) and the Longhorns took down Petty three times. The Bears had no sacks in their first 163 pass attempts of the season. QB Tyrone Swoopes has directed the offense the last four games, completing 79 of 133 passes (59.4 percent) for 734 yards. He committed just two turnovers in his first three starts, though was picked off twice and fumbled once vs. Baylor. Swoopes had his streak of consecutive passes without an interception snapped at 77 vs. Baylor. The streak ranks No. 10 on the UT all-time list. Jaxon Shipley (29) and John Harris (26) are leading the team in receptions. They rank tied for sixth and ninth, respectively, in the Big 12 in catches. Three players had 40 or more rushing yards Johnathan Gray (79), Malcolm Brown (55) and Tyrone Swoopes (40). The Sooners are ranked No. 22 nationally in rushing defense (109.6 ypg). Leading up to the Kansas game, Texas announced a pair of personnel updates. QB David Ash decided to retire from football due to his injury history and DT Desmond Jackson had surgery on his injured foot (vs. UCLA) and is out for the season. HOLDING BAYLOR S HIGH- POWERED OFFENSE IN CHECK: Baylor entered last week s game ranked No. 1 in the FBS in scoring (56.8 points per game), first in total offense (641.0 ypg) and fourth in passing offense (401.3 ypg) and the UT defense held the Bears well below those averages as they produced 389 yards of total offense, including 111 passing yards. It marked just the second time in the last 45 games that Baylor posted less than 400 yards of total offense (370 vs. TCU in 2013) and it was the lowest passing yards output by the Bears since the final game of the 2008 season (91 vs. Texas Tech). UT held Baylor s explosive plays to a minimum. The Bears had five runs of 12-plus yards and only three pass plays of 16 or more yards. STREAKS, TRENDS AND MILESTONES: John Harris had one TD reception in each of the first four games, becoming just the second player in school history to accomplish that feat. Jordan Shipley had at least one TD catch in the first eight games of Harris TD streak, snapped vs. Baylor, ranks tied for fifth in UT history. Duke Thomas had a career-high two interceptions in the win over Kansas. He was the first Longhorn with two picks in a game since Quandre Diggs vs. Ole Miss (Sept. 15, 2012). Hicks, the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week for his 15-tackle, one interception performance vs. Kansas, has a team-high 69 stops. He has averaged 15.3 tackles over the last four games, including a career-best 18 vs. UCLA. Steve Edmond is second with 65 stops, including a career-best 19 vs. Baylor. He is averaging 15.0 tackles over the last four contests. Safety Jason Hall made his first career start in the Kansas game and was credited with a career-high seven tackles. He became the first true freshman to start a game since Blake Gideon in Gideon started all 13 games at safety that season. Dominic Espinosa, who fractured an ankle in the season opener vs. North Texas, had his team-best 40 consecutive-game starting streak snapped vs. BYU. DE Cedric Reed, who has started 23 straight games, now has the team lead. TE Geoff Swaim has the most consecutive starts on offense with nine. For just the 14th time on UT record, the Longhorns held an opponent to under 100 yards of total offense when they limited North Texas to just 94 (79 rushing, 15 passing). The 94 yards yielded rank No. 13 on the UT single-game list and it marked the first time since Oct. 29, 2011 that the Longhorns held an opponent under 100 yards. Texas was one of just three schools in the FBS to allow that few yards in week one (also Pittsburgh, 57, and Louisiana- Monroe, 94). The 15 passing yards surrendered to UNT rank No. 9 on the UT single-game list. The Texas defense forced North Texas YEARS WINS 1. DT Chris Whaley had UT s last interception return for a score (31 yards) in the 2013 Oklahoma game. The Horns followed that up with four more interceptions vs. Kansas. TRADITIONAL POWERS: Texas and Oklahoma are two of the seven winningest programs in NCAA history based on total wins and winning percentage. The Longhorns rank seventh in all-time winning percentage (.714), while Oklahoma is fourth (.720). Texas currently ranks third in all-time wins (see chart below) and Oklahoma stands sixth. Texas has played in 52 bowl games and Oklahoma has made 47 bowl appearances. SOLD OUT: This year s game is expected to be the 69th consecutive sellout at the Cotton Bowl (92,100). CONFERENCE FOES: Texas and Oklahoma met as conference opponents in 1996 for the first time in 77 years. The Longhorns and Sooners first met as league foes when the Sooners were a member of the Southwest Conference from and now have conference bragging rights on the line for the 18th year as members of the Big 12. 4 LAST TIME VS. OKLAHOMA (OCT. 12, 2013): Case McCoy threw for 190 yards and two touchdowns, Johnathan Gray and Malcolm Brown both topped 100 rushing yards, and Texas never trailed in a victory over No. 12/10 Oklahoma. Four different Longhorns scored touchdowns as Texas defeated the Sooners for the first time since UT scored two non-offensive touchdowns in one game for the first time since one on a 31-yard interception return from Chris Whaley and another on an 85-yard punt return from Daje Johnson. The Longhorns totaled 445 yards of offense, including 255 on the ground, and held on to the ball for 35:15, while limiting Oklahoma to 263 total yards, its lowest output in the series since LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION: ABC is broadcasting this year s game, which marks the 62nd time the Texas/Oklahoma matchup will be televised. ABC will be carrying the game for the 23rd time in the past 24 years. FOX Sports Southwest s telecast of the 1998 game snapped a string of seven consecutive contests carried by ABC. Forty-three UT/OU games have been network telecasts. The first-ever television appearance came in 1948 when a Fort Worth station carried the game live. Excluding OU television probation years ( and 89), the game is being televised for the 38th year in a row. FAVORITE TARGETS OFF TO THE FAIR: The Texas/Oklahoma game is once again a part of a state festival with the State Fair of Texas surrounding the event. That continues a tradition which began in That year, the game was played in an old wooden structure called Fair Park Stadium, which was located on what is now a parking lot at Fair Park. A new stadium, also named Fair Park Stadium, was built in 1930 and renamed in 1936 as the Cotton Bowl. The name change came about because, at the time, Dallas was the largest interior spot cotton market in the world. THE BATTLE LINE: One of the unique characteristics of the Texas/OU rivalry is the colors. With the tickets divided equally, burnt orange and crimson split down the middle. OU claims the south horseshoe from the 50-yard line and UT the horseshoe north of midfield. As the visiting team, the Longhorns will wear white jerseys and occupy the east bench area (opposite the press box side) with that role reversing next season. THE GOLDEN HAT: To the victor goes the Golden Hat, a rotating trophy representing the winner of the Texas/Oklahoma contest. It s a gold cowboy hat mounted on a large block of wood and it has been a part of the series since the State Fair of Texas donated it in The only change has been the actual color. When it first arrived, it was known as the Bronze Hat Senior wide receivers Jaxon Shipley and John Harris have been the favorite targets in the receiving corps for Texas this year. Shipley leads the team with 29 receptions and his 5.8 catches per game are tied for 40th in the FBS. Harris has 26 catches, with his 5.2 receptions per game tied for 59th in the nation. The duo is among just 12 Longhorns to have made at least 26 receptions in the first five games of the season, dating back to Most receptions by a Texas player, first five games of a season (since 1999) Player Year Receptions-Yds TDs Jordan Shipley Kwame Cavil Nate Jones Quan Cosby Ryan Nunez Dan Buckner Jaxon Shipley Quan Cosby Jaxon Shipley Roy Williams John Harris Mike Davis and actually was bronze. When that hat was reworked in the 1970s, it came out gold, hence it is now officially known as the Golden Hat. GOVERNOR S CUP: The Governor s Cup is exchanged by the Governors of Texas and Oklahoma following the AT&T Red River Showdown. The tradition started when Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe donated the trophy, and each year it is transported from the office of the previous year s winning Governor to Dallas. It is displayed in the Hall of State on game day and then transported to the office of that year s winning Governor after it has received its engraving. UT/OU TORCHLIGHT PARADE: The annual Torchlight Parade is set for 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Main Mall on the UT campus. Head coach Charlie Strong and the team will be on hand at approximately 8:30 p.m. DIRECTING THE OFFENSE: Sophomore Tyrone Swoopes is now the team s starting quarterback. Swoopes, who played in six games as a reserve in 2013, has capably directed the offense in the first four starts of his career, completing 79 of 133 passes (59.4 percent) for 734 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions. In his starting debut vs. BYU, Swoopes was solid, completing 20-of-31 passes for 176 yards, a touchdown and an interception. He completed his first eight attempts of the game, and although he was unable to lead his first scoring drive as a starter until the third quarter, he showed promise. On the TD drive, Swoopes led a 13-play, 75-yard drive in which he went 6-of-6 for 53 yards, including a 13-yard TD to John Harris. DID YOU KNOW? DE Cedric Reed was among select company nationally last season. He was one of only two defensive players in the FBS with at least 5.0 sacks, four pass breakups and five forced fumbles. Reed had 10.0 sacks, four PBUs and five forced fumbles. He ranked tied for 18th nationally in sacks (0.77 per game) and tied for fifth in forced fumbles (0.38 pg). Khalil Mack of Buffalo was the other player. He had 10.5 sacks, seven pass breakups and five forced fumbles. Mack ended up being selected with the fifth overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Oakland Raiders Texas Football Notes vs. Oklahoma [Oct.11]

5 In his second start, Swoopes went 24 of 34 for 196 yards and two TDs vs. UCLA. He again got off to a hot start, completing his first 11 passes, and was 11 of 13 for 104 yards and two TDs on Texas two touchdown drives. Swoopes made the first road start of his career and helped Texas win 23-0 at Kansas. He completed 19 of 34 passes for 218 yards and two TDs, along with a 7-yard rushing TD. Swoopes was 6-for-8 for 75 yards and one touchdown on third downs. Against Baylor Swoopes finished 16 of 34 for 144 yards and was intercepted twice. He set a career high with 40 rushing yards. ASH RETIRES: David Ash entered 2014 with high hopes as the team s starting quarterback, but the fourth-year player was forced to retire from football on Sept. 22 after playing in just one game this year. He was looking to replicate a 2012 season which saw him start in 12 of 13 games and finish 15th in the FBS in completion percentage STRONG IMPROVEMENT (67.3). Ash played in just three games last year, missing the final 10 to a head injury and earning a medical redshirt. He was one of the most experienced quarterbacks in the Big 12 having played in 29 games with 22 starts. However, head coach Charlie Strong announced Wednesday that Ash was giving up football, though he will remain involved with the team. He ends his career eighth on the UT all-time passing yards list (4,728), 10th in total offense (5,125) and seventh in touchdown passes (31). REVAMPED OFFENSIVE LINE: With three starters lost from last year, the Longhorns were going to have a somewhat different look to the offensive line this year. Dominic Espinosa entered the season having started the last 39 games at center, but after suffering a fractured ankle vs. North Texas the senior is out indefinitely and the Longhorns are now minus their most experienced lineman. Junior Kennedy Estelle made eight starts a year ago and opened the A long-time defensive coordinator, Charlie Strong s teams pride themselves on being tough, physical and sound defensively. That left Texas with a group that entered the BYU game with a combined five starts: sophomore right tackle Kent Perkins had two, junior left guard Sedrick Flowers had two and junior left tackle Marcus Hutchins had one. Hutchins moved over from the defensive line during preseason camp. Meanwhile, right guard Taylor Doyle and center Jake Raulerson made their first career starts vs. BYU. That group started again the next two games but the Longhorns shook up the lineup vs. Baylor, when redshirt freshman started at right tackle, moving Perkins to right guard. That group helped Texas average 4.8 yards per carry and total 190 rushing yards which were season highs. CATCHING ON: With the departure of Mike Davis, who ended his career fourth in UT history in both receptions (200) and receiving yards (2,753), Texas did not have much returning production beyond senior Jaxon Shipley and junior Marcus Johnson. Shipley has posted 188 receptions (fifth on the UT career list) in his career after catching 29 for 245 yards in the first five games. Behind Shipley, Johnson was the leading returning receiver in terms of yardage, having caught 22 passes for 350 yards (15.9 ypc) last year. He has 10 catches for 106 yards so far this season. Senior John Harris has been the breakout wide receiver, posting 26 catches for a team-high 370 yards. His 74.0 yards per game rank eighth in the Big 12. Harris had seven catches for a career-best 110 yards and a TD in the opener, and followed it up with a career-high eight catches for 77 yards and a touchdown in week two vs. BYU. After posting TD receptions vs. UCLA and Kansas, he became just the second player in school history with a touchdown reception in each of the first four games (also Jordan Shipley, 2008). Beyond Shipley, Harris and Johnson, Jacorey Warrick has seen time, making his first career catches (two for 30 yards) vs. UNT. Junior Daje Johnson, who posted 24 receptions for 178 yards last season, saw his first action against Baylor after being suspended the first four games. Against the Bears he didn t record a reception. True freshmen Armanti Foreman, Lorenzo Joe and Dorian Leonard have also seen action. 5

6 ONE-TWO PUNCH IN THE BACKFIELD: Senior Malcolm Brown and junior Johnathan Gray give Texas a formidable running back duo. Brown and Gray are one of just six twosomes in the nation to return after each rushing for more than 750 yards last season. Brown rushed for 904 yards and nine touchdowns while averaging rushing yards over the last eight games. Gray is fully recovered from a torn Achilles that caused him to miss the final four games last season. Gray averaged 4.9 yards per carry on 159 attempts, finishing the season with 780 yards on the ground. Both are threats to catch the ball out of the backfield: Brown had 17 catches for 195 yards and Gray had 15 receptions for 61 yards. They have split the work load evenly this year, with Gray rushing 62 times for 301 yards (4.9 ypc) and Brown carrying it 65 times for 246 yards (3.8 ypc). Behind Brown and Gray, the Longhorns are youthful with just two scholarship running backs on the roster: true freshmen Donald Catalon and D Onta Foreman. McFarland has posted six catches so far, including a 2-yard TD catch vs. UCLA and a 1-yard TD reception vs. Kansas, while Swaim has five catches for 45 yards. Looking back at Louisville last year, Charlie Strong s offense had two tight ends - Gerald Christian (28) and Ryan Hubbell (14) - combine for 42 catches. During 2012, Hubbell (14) and Nate Nord (13) combined for 27 receptions. That same season, McFarland (8) and Daniels (5) were more involved in the UT passing game, combining for 13 catches. A knee injury caused Daniels to miss the first three games (he returned vs. Kansas) so freshman Andrew Beck was moved to tight end in the preseason and has played in all five games. IN THE TRENCHES: Texas is relying on a stout and experienced defensive line. Senior Cedric Reed and sophomore Caleb Bluiett are the starting ends while junior Malcom Brown and sophomore Hassan Ridgeway have occupied the tackle positions. The Longhorns are without senior Desmond Jackson who suffered a foot injury in the UCLA game that will sideline him for the remainder of the season. Against Kansas, Ridgeway moved into the starting lineup and Bluiett made his first start of the season over junior DE Shiro Davis. DT Alex Norman, DT Paul Boyette Jr. and DE Bryce Cottrell have also added depth, while true freshman DT Poona Ford saw Sophomore Tyrone Swoopes has performed well in his first four starts. 7 The group made their presence known from the onset of the opener vs. UNT, setting the tone and helping Texas allow just 40 yards of total offense in the first three quarters. After recording four sacks vs. UNT, the Longhorns had six vs. BYU, three vs. UCLA and four vs. Kansas. Texas became the first team to record a sack of a Baylor QB in the matchup with the Bears, finishing the game with three. Against the Cougars, Brown had a careerhigh 2.5 sacks, matched his career best with 10 tackles and forced a fumble. Davis posted 1.5 sacks, while Reed and Bluiett each assisted on one. Brown and Ridgeway each tallied one sack against the Bruins, while Reed and Davis each had a sack at Kansas and Bluiett had one vs. Baylor. DEPTH AT LINEBACKER: Texas has depth at linebacker, where five players that started in at least one game last season returned. Senior Steve Edmond, an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection last year, anchors the middle, while senior Jordan Hicks and junior Peter Jinkens start at the outside positions. Dalton Santos (seven starts) and Timothy Cole (one) also bring starting experience from last season, while Demarco Cobbs (six) and Tevin Jackson (two) have starting experience from Edmond, who has made 24 career starts, recorded 73 tackles last year. Hicks has returned from an Achilles injury that caused him to miss the final 10 games a season ago, but so far has returned to the As of Oct. 5, there were 34 former players on NFL rosters and two coaching in the NFL. He also has two interceptions on the year, with one coming vs. North Texas and the other vs. Kansas. Edmond is second on the team with 65 stops, including a career-high 19 vs. Baylor when he also had two sacks. Cobbs returned an interception 28 yards for a touchdown vs. North Texas. PLAYMAKERS IN THE SECONDARY: With experienced playmakers Quandre Diggs, Duke Thomas and Mykkele Thompson, the Longhorns have a wellequipped secondary and proved that by allowing just passing yards per game in the first five contests which ranks fifth nationally (15 vs. UNT, 181 vs. BYU, 226 vs. UCLA, 140 vs. Kansas, 111 vs. Baylor). The unit had an impressive day against the high-powered offense of Baylor, holding Bears QB Bryce Petty to 7-of-22 passing for just 111 yards which was their lowest passing output since Nov. 29, 2008 when they had just 91. The secondary has also helped the Longhorns record nine interceptions which is tied for fourth in the nation. Diggs and Thomas have two each while Dylan Haines and Adrian Colbert have one each. Manning one of the safety positions is Thompson, a senior who has seen action in 43 career games including 23 starts. Sophomore s Adian Colbert and Dylan Haines along with freshman Jason Hall have also made starts at safety this season. The Longhorns were without Josh Turner for at the first two games due to suspension though he returned to play special teams the last three games. Turner played in 12 games (three starts) last season and posted 37 tackles. Colbert, who had six special teams tackles in 2013, had an interception vs. the Mean Green as did Haines. Diggs made the ninth interception of his career when he picked off Taysom Hill of BYU. Diggs added his 10th pick vs. Kansas. Sophomore Bryson Echols as well as redshirt freshman Antwuan Davis have also seen time at cornerback. REPLACING THE KICKERS: Texas had to replace its punter and place-kicker this season. Anthony Fera served a dual role last year and turned in one of the best performances in school history. Fera was a finalist for the 2013 Lou Groza Award after connecting on 20 of 22 field goals, including a streak of 15 consecutive that matched Phil Dawson s school record ( ). His 90.9 percent field-goal accuracy ranks second on the UT all-time single-season list. He also averaged 40.7 yards on 75 punts. Junior Nick Rose took over as the placekicker after serving as the kickoff specialist each of the last two years and has connected on 3 of 7 field goals so far (missed from 38, made from 34 vs. UNT; missed from 43 vs. BYU; made from 33 vs. UCLA; blocked from 48 vs. Kansas, made from 42 vs. Kansas; blocked from 52 vs. Baylor). Senior William Russ took over as the No. 1 punter and is averaging 43.7 yards per punt which ranks 30th nationally. He has placed 14 punts inside the opponents 20-yard line and has just two touchbacks. Nine of his punts have been fair caught and eight have traveled 50 yards or more. 7

8 BREAKING DOWN THE 2014 SCHED- ULE: UT is playing eight games this season against teams that reached a bowl game in Those bowl teams all registered at least eight wins. Last season, UT played nine teams that were in bowl games in UT only leaves the state of Texas three times in 2014, but the schedule is one of the more challenging in recent history. All three nonconference opponents - North Texas, BYU and UCLA - reached bowl games. The Longhorns are one of only two Big 12 teams without an FCS foe on the schedule. After playing its first two games at home against UNT and BYU, the Longhorns played UCLA in AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. As of Oct. 5, the Longhorns schedule is the 28thmost difficult, according to NCAA.org. The Longhorns past and future opposition has a winning percentage of.622 (28-17). Gray had been the top back in 2013, ranking third in the Big 12 and 47th nationally with 86.7 rushing yards per game at the time of his injury. Gray was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week on Sept. 23 after a career-best performance in the win over Kansas State. In that game, Gray set career highs with 141 rushing yards and 28 attempts, while matching a career best with a pair of touchdowns. His TD runs came from 21 yards out in the second quarter and 15 yards in the third quarter. Of his rushing yards, 102 came in the second and third quarters as the Horns dealt with losing starting quarterback David Ash and maintained their doubledigit lead in the game. Gray also became the 49th player in UT history to reach the 1,000 career rushing yard mark against the Wildcats (currently 1,659). Brown came on strong after battling an ankle injury early in the 2013 season. Over the last eight games, Brown averaged 23.9 carries and yards per game, hitting the 100-yard mark five times. He improved down the stretch, averaging yards over the last three games of the season and had 2,132 career yards which ranks 14th in school history. The running game was instrumental in last season s win over Oklahoma as the Longhorns piled up 255 yards on 60 rushes. Gray had 123 yards on a career-high 29 attempts while Brown had 120 yards on 23 attempts. 9 MODEL OF CONSISTENCY: Jaxon Shipley, now a senior, has been one of the most consistent performers since he arrived on campus for the 2011 season. Shipley has caught at least one pass in 40 of his 41 career games played, including one in each of his first 33, a streak that was snapped against Texas Tech last season. He also has three or more catches in 33 games and at least five in 16 of the last 22 games. His streak of 33 straight games with a reception was the third longest in school history, just ahead of his older brother Jordan. Texas Consecutive Games with Reception 1. Roy Williams 47 ( ) 2. Mike Davis ended his career ranked fourth in career receptions, fourth in receiving yards and fifth in TDs, but Jaxon Shipley is back for his senior season. Shipley cracked the top 10 in career receptions in the 2013 Ole Miss game and the top 10 in career receiving yards in the Oklahoma game. He is now fifth in career receptions (188) and became the eighth player in school history to break the 2,000 yard mark when he had 36 receiving yards against BYU (2,178). Shipley led the team in receptions (56) and was second in receiving yards (589) last season. A three-year starter, Diggs 33 career pass breakups and 10 interceptions are the most on the current roster, while he needs just three more pass breakups to break into the UT career top 10 list. The senior was named to the preseason watch lists for the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Nagurski Trophy, along with the Jim Thorpe Award honoring the best defensive back in college football. Diggs has excelled in each of his three seasons at Texas. In 2011, he posted one of the top freshman seasons in school history for a defensive back. He was named the 2011 Big 12 Defensive Freshman of the Year and was a FWAA Freshman All-American. He tied the school record for interceptions by a freshman, matching Chris Carter s mark of four in Diggs also had 15 pass breakups to rank second most on the UT freshman list behind Earl Thomas 17 in In 2012, Diggs led the team in both interceptions (four) and pass breakups (seven). His last interception of the season was his most important one. His third-quarter pick of Oregon State s Cody Vaz set up a touchdown which helped turn the momentum in the Longhorns as they posted a win in the Valero Alamo Bowl. 10 FBS in interceptions (0.31 per game). Last year, he posted 58 tackles and a team-high 10 pass breakups. REED TAKES OVER LEAD ROLE AT DEFENSIVE END: After forming one of the best defensive end duos in the country with teammate Jackson Jeffcoat last year, Cedric Reed has moved into the lead role at that position as a senior. A first team All-Big 12 selection last year, Reed was on the preseason watch lists for the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Nagurski Trophy, which honor the top defensive player in the nation, and the Rotary Lombardi Award, presented to the top lineman. Reed ranked second on the team behind Jeffcoat last year in both sacks (10.0) and tackles for loss (19), while his 79 tackles were third most on the team. Reed ranked third in the Big 12 and tied for 18th in the FBS in sacks (0.77 per game), and tied for second in the league and tied for fifth in the nation in forced fumbles (0.38 pg). ONE OF THE NATION S TOP SACK PRODUCERS: Cedric Reed was one of the top sack producing defenders in the nation last season. Reed s 10 sacks a year ago rank tied for sixth-best nationally among returning players. FBS Top Returning Sack Producers (2013) 1. Vic Beasley, Clemson 13.0_ Hau Oli Kikaha, Washington Martin Ifedi, Memphis 11.5 Ryan Mueller, K-State Randy Gregory, Nebraska Cedric Reed, Texas 10.0 Ejiro Ederaine, Fresno State 10.0 CLOGGING UP THE MIDDLE: After a breakout sophomore season in which he started all 13 games, defensive tackle Malcom Brown is back to lead the middle of the defensive line. Brown was instrumental in a Texas run defense that surrendered just yards per game on the ground in conference play, a mark that ranked fourth, but was just 10 yards more than No. 1 ranked TCU (127.8). Brown finished the 2013 season ranked tied for third on the team in PBUs (5), third in tackles for loss (12), third in QB pressures (6) and seventh in tackles (68). He was on the preseason watch lists for the Chuck Bednarik Award and the Nagurski Trophy, and the Outland Trophy which honors the nation s top interior lineman. Senior Desmond Jackson was manning the other starting tackle position, but injured his foot vs. UCLA and will have surgery. He played in all 13 games last year, including three starts, and tallied 39 tackles, five TFL, two sacks and three pressures. Jackson is done for the season. LINEBACKER STABILITY: Texas spent much of last season shuffling players at the linebacker position but looks for stability at that position in 2014 with several key players set to return. Dalton Santos and Steve Edmond are the top returnees in terms of tackles, finishing with 74 and 73 tackles respectively last year. Also returning is Jordan Hicks, who recorded 41 tackles in four games before suffering a ruptured left Achilles tendon during the Kansas State game that caused him to miss the remainder of the season. That marked the second straight year the linebacking corps lost Hicks to a season-ending injury early in the year; he played in just three games in 2012 before missing the next 10 with a hip injury. Edmond, a two-time All-Big 12 choice (2012, 2013), has made 27 starts over the last two-plus seasons and has 257 career tackles which is first among active players. He has nine career double-digit tackle games. Santos, meanwhile, played in all 13 games including seven starts last season. He finished fourth on the team with 10 tackles for loss. The Longhorns also return Peter Jinkens, who played in all 13 games with six starts a year ago. Jinkens finished the season with 49 tackles, including 21 in the last two games. BOYER EARNS A PAIR OF ACCOLADES: Senior Nate Boyer was named to the 2014 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team on Sept. 23 and a semifinalist for the 2014 William V. Campbell Trophy, which recognizes the best football scholar-athlete in the nation, on Sept. 25. Boyer, a fifth-year deep-snapper, is the ninth Longhorn to earn a spot on the prestigious Good Works Team that each year pays tribute to a select group of student-athletes who have worked to positively impact the lives of others. He is among 22 collegiate players, including 11 at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level, on this year s team. He was one of 167 candidates announced by The National Football Foundation (NFF) and College Hall of Fame for the Campbell Trophy. Candidates must be a senior or graduate student in their final year of eligibility, have a grade point average of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale, have outstanding football ability as a first-team player or significant contributor, and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. BROTHERLY TIES: The Texas football team has a family feel to it. The Longhorns have four sets of brothers on the current roster and five other players whose brother was a member of the program. Running back D Onta Foreman and wide receiver Armanti Foreman are freshmen. Freshman offensive lineman Elijah Rodriguez and his brother Daniel, a sophomore, joined the team this summer. Camhron Hughes is a sophomore offensive lineman, and his brother, Naashon, is a redshirt freshman linebacker. Dakota Haines is a senior wide receiver and Dylan Haines is a sophomore safety. In addition, FB Dominic Cruciani (Michael ), Quandre Diggs (Quentin Jammer , ), Jaxon Shipley (Jordan ), Chris Terry (Brad ) and Kevin Vaccaro (Kenny ) all have brothers who played at Texas Texas Football Notes vs. Oklahoma [Oct.11]
