2 Scouting Green Bay Senior guard Rachel Porath was named a first-team all-horizon League performer this year, mirroring her honors from last season. She has missed just one start in her collegiate career, making the most starts in team Division I history. For her career, Porath could move into the top 10 in all three shooting categories in team history, becoming the first player ever to do so. Porath currently leads this season s team in the three major shooting categories. Joining Porath on the league s first team is senior Lavesa Glover. Glover is the team leader in scoring (11.2 ppg) as the primary post player. A high percentage shooter, the 6-foot-3 center has demonstrated some nimble moves inside while exhibiting a good shooting touch on outside shots. Glover has more field goal and free throw attempts than anyone on the team and is second in rebounding. Senior Kati Harty is in her second season as the starting point guard for the Phoenix. Quick, with a knack for cutting off passing lanes, Harty is second on the team and ranked nationally in steals. Offensively, she leads the team in assists and has improved upon her career averages in field goal and three-point field goal percentages this season. Rounding out the senior quartet is forward Erin Templin. A multi-faceted player, Templin displays uncanny toughness, often taking charges and fighting for loose balls. She leads the team in rebounding and is third in minutes played as one of the team s most versatile players. Completing the starting five is sophomore Celeste Hoewisch, a first-year starter and second-team all-horizon League performer. Hoewisch is a fiesty defender who s not afraid to hit the floor. She has also displayed aggressiveness on the offensive end, too. The top scoring reserve a season ago, she has scored in double figures 21 times this season and was the team s top scorer during league play. Providing starter-quality support off the bench are sophomores Kayla Tetschlag and Heather Golden. Tetschlag, who was named the league s Sixth Player of the Year this season, has shown the versatility to play both inside and outside and is second on the team in field goal percentage. Golden gives Green Bay some scoring punch as one of the team s best shooters. Joining the second-year players as key contributors are first-year players Hannah Quilling and Julie Wojta. Quilling, a true freshman, primarily backs up Kati Harty at point guard while Wojta, who redshirted last year, has seen action in 20 games ROSTER No. Name Ht. Yr. Pos. 3 HEAD COACH MATT BOLLANT Career Record: (7th) Record at Green Bay: 54-9 (2nd) 2009 HORIZON LEAGUE COACH OF THE YEAR Matt Bollant is in his second season as head coach for the Green Bay women s basketball team and has already made an indelible mark on the lasting success of the Phoenix. Through his first two seasons, Bollant has continued the team s storied success. Under his watch, the Phoenix is 54-9 (.857 winning percentage) with an impressive 35-1 record in regular season Horizon League games (.972 winning percentage). Green Bay s success under Bollant s watch has been the key to back-to-back Horizon League Coach of the Year honors. In , Bollant guided the Phoenix to a 26-6 record and a WNIT postseason berth. Further successes of the season include the team s NCAA statistical championship in three-point field goal percentage, the team s 13-game winning streak late in the season and a 15-2 home record. For his career, Bollant boasts an impressive record in seven seasons as a collegiate head coach for a stellar.800 percentage. Just the third head coach in the storied legacy of Green Bay women s basketball, Bollant arrived in Titletown following five seasons at Bryan (Tenn.) College. In his five seasons as the program s mentor, Bollant posted a record (.779 winning percentage) with the Lady Lions at the NAIA level. Prior to his appointment at Bryan, Bollant served as an assistant coach for former Green Bay women s basketball standout Kathi Bennett at Indiana University for two seasons and at the University of Evansville for three years. Bollant and Indiana made back-to-back postseason appearances with the team s trip to the NCAA tournament in 2002 and the WNIT in The 2002 squad won the Big Ten tournament for the first and only time in Indiana history. A 1994 graduate of Winona State University with a degree in business education, Bollant also has a master s degree in education from American Intercontinental University. Green Bay women s basketball has quite the string of consecutive winning seasons 32 to be exact. So let s look back, in a pop culture kind of way, at how Green Bay s success has stayed constant, while America s music tastes have vastly changed... BOOMBASTIC (Shaggy, 1995) Looking back: Green Bay advanced to the championship contest of the 2009 Speedway Horizon League Women s Basketball Championship Friday evening with a defensive effort the team has become known for, as the Phoenix held Wright State to a season-low in scoring in Green Bay s win. The Phoenix benefitted from balanced scoring, as Lavesa Glover posted a game-high 15 points. Rachel Porath added 11 points, while Kati Harty scored nine of her 10 points on a trio of early three-pointers. Eleven players found the scoring column for the Phoenix. STAYIN ALIVE (Bee Gees, 1978) Green Bay has dominated the Horizon League Championship since joining the then-mcc during the season. The Phoenix is 35-6 in the league s postseason tournament; Green Bay has captured eight titles along the 14-year journey. Another key to Green Bay s success has been its consistency overal during the month of March, as the Phoenix boasts an impressive record during the third month of the year for a winning percentage of.661. ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL (Pink Floyd, 1980) The Phoenix extended the longest current streak in the nation of consecutive regular season conference titles with a win over Loyola Feb. 21. Green Bay has won at least a share of the Horizon League 11 straight seasons, putting it just ahead of Chattanooga, which won its 10th straight Southern Conference title this season. IN THE AIR TONIGHT (Phil Collins, 1981) With a win Sunday afternoon: Green Bay will earn its 10th trip to the NCAA tournament, including its ninth berth since joining the Horizon League in the season... Green Bay extends its winning streak to 21 games, its second-longest in team history and alone as second-best in the nation... The Phoenix would claim its first Horizon League tournament title since Green Bay would extend its winning streak over Milwaukee to eight games... Green Bay s senior class of Kati Harty, Lavesa Glover, Rachel Porath and Erin Templin would be the winningest senior class in team history with 106 wins. DESIRE (U2, 1988) Green Bay is in its fourth week as the No. 1 scoring defense in the nation (50.5 ppg allowed). With its win over Wright State March 13, the Phoenix set a team record by holding opponents under 50 points 15 times this season. In statistics released by the NCAA March 12, Green Bay was also first in the nation in turnover margin (+7.1) and sixth in steals (12.3 per game). Opponents have turned the ball over 23.2 times a game vs. Green Bay. DROP IT LIKE IT S HOT (Snoop Dogg, 2004) As the highest scoring team in the Horizon League, Green Bay s identity isn t limited just to defense. The Phoenix has shot at least 46.8 percent in nine of its last 12 games. As a result, Green Bay has moved up to 10th in the nation in field goal percentage (45.8 percent). ABOUT THAT PHOENIX References to the Green Bay Athletics mascot or its teams should be singular in printed material. An example of correct usage: The Phoenix is on a winning streak. During the 1970 campus-wide poll which resulted in the selection of Phoenix as the University mascot, supporters suggested that the use of a collective singular nickname would emphasize the unity of the teams, University and community.

The squad was 16-0 before winning the conference tournament and advancing to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. The squad was 12-0 in the North Star Conference and played in the WNIT. Of note, only four other teams in the country were able to run the table on their conference foes during the regular season. JOYRIDE (Roxette, 1991) Green Bay is in the midst of a 20-game winning streak, the second-longest in team history and tied for second-best active streak in the country. The Phoenix has outscored its opponents by an average of 19.3 points per game during the streak... In Horizon League play, Green Bay posted the No. 1 scoring offense (67.2 ppg) and No. 1 scoring defense (48.8 ppg) and led in nine other statisical categories... Four Green Bay players - Rachel Porath (.560), Heather Golden (.494), Lavesa Glover (.480) and Celeste Hoewisch (.477) - were among the top eight in the league in field goal percentage... Four - Porath (.477), Erin Templin (.450), Golden (.441), and Kati Harty (.429) - were among the top five in three-point field goal percentage. ICE, ICE, BABY (Vanilla Ice, 1990) Green Bay is making a name for itself defensively both in the Horizon League and nationally. In league games alone, Green Bay shattered the previous record of scoring defense; the Phoenix gave up just 48.8 points per game against league foes, besting Detroit s mark of 52.6 points per game during the 2004 season. The Phoenix record for scoring defense in a season is 55.0 ppg set during the season, and this year s clip of 50.5 ppg is on track to break the previous record, which would also be a Horizon League overall record (Green Bay, 55.6 in 2005). The all-time NCAA record for scoring defense in a season is 49.0 ppg, set two seasons ago by LSU. As it stands now, Green Bay s 50.5 points per game allowed is third best in NCAA history. UMBRELLA (Rhianna, 2007) Ok, now we re stretching things a bit... but from beyond the three-point umbrella the Phoenix is shooting 37.8 percent on the season, with is ninth-best in the nation. Rachel Porath leads the way with a.456 shooting percentage, a clip that jumps to.480 during the team s 20-game winning streak. A THOUSAND MILES (Vanessa Carlton, 2002) Only one time (1983) in program history have three Phoenix women s basketball players reached 1,000 career points in the same season. This season could mark the second time. With seniors Rachel Porath and Lavesa Glover already over 1,000 points, fellow senior Kati Harty has a chance to join them. Currently at 963 career points, Harty has at least two post-season games remaining to pull off the rare triple. She s averaging 9.3 points per game, but had a career-high 22 points vs. Butler Feb. 28. 5 HOLLABACK GIRL (Gwen Stefani, 2005) Senior Rachel Porath is five made three-pointers away from becoming the school s all-time leader in the category with 188 career makes. Natalie Berglin ( ) is tops on the list with Porath is also just one free throw attempt away from possibly becoming the school s all-time best free throw shooter. Needing 200 attempts to qualify, Porath has connected on 174-of-199 for her career, putting her at 87.4 percent. Current Green Bay assistant coach Amanda Leonhard ( ) is No. 1 on the all-time list at 84.7 percent... With Sunday s start, Porath will have played in the most games in Green Bay women s basketball history. Sue Pitroski ( ) played in 126 games and Porath will play in her 127th game Sunday... Porath is just the third player in Green Bay women s basketball history to record 1,000 career points, pull down 500 career rebounds, and dish out 250 career assists. EYE OF THE TIGER (Survivor, 1982) Sophomore guard Celeste Hoewisch, a first-year starter, earned second-team all-league honors after elevating her play during the conference season. Not only did she leading the Phoenix in scoring (11.0 points per game) and steals (2.7 per game) during the conference slate, but she s also shot much better than she did in non-conference play. Over the last 20 games, she s hit 47 percent from the field (69-of-145) and 78 percent (62-of-79) from the free throw line. INDEPENDENT WOMAN (Destiny s Child, 2000) Senior forward Erin Templin showed her independence against Milwaukee March 7 when she registered the first double-double for the Phoenix this season with a careerhigh 20 points (thanks to 4-of-6 three-point shooting) and 11 rebounds. Templin is arguably Green Bay s most versatile player; last season, the 6-1 forward was third on the team in assists, while this year she is tops for the Phoenix in rebounding (5.6 rpg). She is also second on the team in blocks (19) and third on the team in steals (1.7 spg). MAMBO #5 (Lou Bega, 1999) First-team all-horizon League selection Lavesa Glover leads the Phoenix this season in scoring (11.2 ppg) and blocks (23) while ranking second on the squad in rebounds (4.2 rpg). With a free throw at the 11:39 mark of the second half vs. Butler Feb. 28, Glover scored the 1,000th point of her career. Glover joined 25 other Phoenix women who have reached the milestone including teammate Rachel Porath, who scored her 1000th point earlier this season. YOU RE STILL THE ONE (Shania Twain, 1998) With nine assists March 11 against Detroit, senior Kati Harty moved into ninth on Green Bay s career top 10 for assists. Currently at 356 assists, Harty could move into the top seven by season s end. She s averaging a career-best 4.2 assists per game this season... Not only proficient at giving the ball away to her teammates, Harty is 60th in the NCAA in steals, grabbing 2.4 steals per game. 6 NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP (Rick Astley, 1987) Of course when we talk about pop culture and music, a Rick Roll needs to be addressed. At any rate, this note would be about turnovers. Green Bay s turnover margin is now tops in the nation, as the Phoenix boasts a +7.0 turnover margin. Although the statistic is in its first year of being tracked by the NCAA, the margin would be the best in team history as well. HOT STUFF (Donna Summer, 1979) With its victory over Wright State Feb. 12, Green Bay posted its 10th consecutive 20-win season. Overall, the Phoenix has recorded at least 20 wins in 22 different seasons (out of 35). This season also marks the sixth 25-plus win season for Green Bay; of note, three of those efforts have been accomplished by this year s senior class, including the team s program-record of 29 wins during the campaign. WITHOUT YOU (Mariah Carey, 1994) Sophomore guard Heather Golden returned to action March 11 against Detroit after missing four games over three weeks with a knee injury. In that game, she tallied two points on 1-of-3 shooting with a rebound. On the season, Golden is averaging 6.7 points per game in 18.3 minutes per contest as a reserve. MACARENA (Los Del Rio, 1996) Just as this was the dance craze years back, the Phoenix begins its march in March with hopes of returning to the Big Dance. The Phoenix has advanced to the NCAA Tournament eight times in the past 11 seasons and has made nine trips overall. The Phoenix boasts a 2-9 record at the national tournament, notching wins in 2003 and LOW (Flo Rida, 2008) As it has done for every year it has competed at the NCAA Division I level, Green Bay opened the regular season on the road with a two-game series in Florida. After defeating FIU for the season opener, Green Bay improved to in season-openers as a D-I program and 2-0 in season-opening contests under head coach Matt Bollant... The Phoenix then went on to defeat Miami (Fla.) for Green Bay s 700th win in program history; only 23 Division I programs have eclipsed that milestone. TAKE ON ME (a-ha, 1985) The Phoenix posted a team-record 27 steals in a victory over Youngstown State Feb. 5 breaking the previous team record of 25 set vs. Loyola in Six Green Bay players tallied at least three steals. Three players posted career highs in thefts - sophomore Heather Golden had six, senior Erin Templin had five, and freshman Hannah Quilling had four. GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN (Cyndi Lauper, 1984) Even with four seniors, Green Bay is one of the youngest teams in the nation based on its number of underclassmen. Ten of 14 players on the Phoenix roster are freshmen or sophomores. Only BYU (14), UMBC (13), Elon (12), Northeastern (12), UCF (12), and Tennessee (11) have more underclassmen than Green Bay. GREEN BAY ATHLETICS UPDATE Nordic Skiing: Junior Santi Ocariz, making his third appearance at the NCAA Championships, finished 27th among 39 competitors in the 10K classic with a time of 25:45.0. The junior s clocking was the fifth-fastest among skiers from the Central Collegiate Ski Association. In her NCAA debut, Freeman placed 35th in the 5K classic. The sophomore s time (15:32.7) ranked seventh among the league s skiers in the event. Swimming and Diving: Green Bay s two diving qualifiers--freshman Daniel Pogue (Chisholm, Minn.) and junior Lauren McGraw (Woodbury, Minn.)--competed Friday on the first day of the NCAA Zone C Championships at the University of Minnesota s Aquatic Center. Pogue finished 30th on the 1-meter board with a score of , while McGraw took 31st out of 37 competitors in the women s 3-meter event. Capacity for the Kress is 4,018. The overall attendance record for a Green Bay women s basketball game is 5,197 set two seasons ago (Dec. 13, 2006) when Green Bay and Wisconsin played at the Resch Center in Green Bay. HEY YA (Outkast, 2003) Green Bay was ranked fourth in the nation among mid-major programs by ESPN.com women s basketball writer Graham Hays Feb. 9. Just ahead of Green Bay was South Dakota State (No. 17 in the latest Associated Press poll), Xavier (No. 20), and Middle Tennessee State. Illinois State, who the Phoenix faced Dec. 13, was No. 7 on the list. THE FINAL COUNTDOWN (Europe, 1986) The Phoenix will be looking for its first NCAA Tournament appearance under head coach Matt Bollant. Charlie Creme, ESPN s resident bracketologist for women s basketball, projected the Phoenix March 12 as a No. 12 seed in the Oklahoma City bracket taking on No. 5 Virginia in Los Angeles. Jerry Palm of CollegeRPI.com predicts Green Bay as a No. 12 seed taking on No. 5 Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., as part of the Berkley bracket. MMMBOP (Hanson, 1997) Senior Kati Harty became the first Phoenix player in three seasons to record double-digit assists in a game when she dished out 10 at Marquette (Dec. 20). Natalie Berglin was the last to do it prior to Harty. Berglin recorded 13 assists in a game vs. Cleveland State Jan. 26, CRAZY (Gnarls Barkley, 2006) The 83 total points scored in the Jan. 4 Green Bay-Milwaukee game was the lowest ever in a game for each school since joining NCAA Division I. Milwaukee scored just 36 points, the fewest allowed by the Phoenix this season, and shot just 27.9%. Said Panthers coach Sandy Botham after the game: Give all the credit to Green Bay. They defensively did a number on us. Very aggressive. We just didn t respond. They exploited the areas we were weak in, which is being strong with the ball. They just took us out of what we wanted to do. We just couldn t score. All the credit goes to Green Bay and their defensive intensity. They are relentless. SMELLS LIKE TEEN SPIRIT (Nirvana, 1992) Green Bay received five commitments on Nov. 13, all signing national letters of intent. Joining the Phoenix program next season will be Lydia Bauer (Lake Zurich, Ill./Lake Zurich), Sarah Eichler (Grafton, Wis./ Grafton), Breannah Ranger (Skokie, Ill./Niles North), Adrian Ritchie (De Pere,Wis./De Pere) and Sam Zastrow (Algoma, Wis./Algoma). Stephanie Sension (Hopkins, Minnesota) was added to Green Bay s roster head coach Matt Bollant announced Jan. 27. Sension, a 6-foot-3 forward, joined the Phoenix Jan. 26 at practice after spending the first semester at the Air Force Academy Preparatory School, where she played on the team there. She will redshirt for the Phoenix this season with four years of eligibility remaining, beginning with the season. WHAT S UP? (4 Non-Blondes, 1993) Green Bay has gone to the free throw line 50 more times than any other league team. Green Bay s 2009 senior class has scored 3,946 points in 486 career games. Sophomore Celeste Hoewisch, just 5-foot-7, leads Green Bay in offensive rebounds (45). Green Bay s home attendance average of 2,193 is over 1,400 fans per game more than any other team in the league. The Phoenix is all-time in the month of March. GB in the RPI (March 10) WEB SITE RPI SOS collegerpi.com realtimerpi.com rpiratings.com
