1 Game #19 at Valparaiso (4-15, 0-6 HL) January 29, :05 p.m. CT Valparaiso, Indiana FINDING MOMENTUM The Phoenix has now won six games in a row, its longest streak of the season. The six-game winning streak is familiar territory for the program, as it has now gone 17-consecutive seasons with at least a six-game winning streak. The last year in which the Phoenix did not record a W6 was in when the team s longest streak was only five wins in a row. The team s longest streak last year was eight wins in a row, a number the Phoenix can tie with two more wins this weekend at Valparaiso and at UIC. DURING THE W6 During the recent run of six wins in a row, Green Bay is enjoying a scoring margin thanks to a 65.0 points per game average and a scoring defense that s only allowing 49.7 points per game. In conference games alone, the Phoenix is allowing a league-best 51.6 points per game, the only team in the league to be allowing fewer than 60 points a contest. Mehryn Kraker and Sam Terry have done the scoring damage for GB, averaging 11.0 and 10.0 PPG, respectively MAGIC NUMBERS When Green Bay has allowed less than 60 points in a game this season, it is a perfect On the offensive end of the floor, the Phoenix holds another perfect 7-0 record when it scores 70 or more points. GB has allowed fewer than 60 points in all but one conference game this season (61 at Cleveland State) and has scored 60 or more points in all five conference games. Going into this weekend the Phoenix is also a perfect 11-0 when playing on either Thursday or Saturday, which GB will be playing on in its next two games. vs VALPO Green Bay will enter Thursday s game with a 16-game winning streak all-time versus the Crusaders. GB is 31-4 (.886) all-time overall against Valparaiso and has not lost to them since Jan. 19, During its run of 16 wins in a row in the series, Green Bay has won those games by an average of 23.6 points per game. The closest game during that stretch came last season when GB won by only four (53-49) points at Valparaiso. APPROACHING NO. 600 One of the most successful coaches in women s basketball history continues to climb up the win column. Head coach Kevin Borseth has now amassed 594 wins in his coaching career, after adding 15 this season. That leaves Borseth six wins away from 600 career victories, an accomplished milestone. Entering the season Borseth ranked 26th in winning percentage among active coaches and 18th in victories. He also began the season 32nd all-time in women s coaching victories. An impressive record considering the difficulty of playing consecutive road games with minimal days off. The most recent situation came in , when his Phoenix went 4-0 during a four-game road trip that started at Cleveland State and ended at Wright State. Green Bay s closest game during that stretch was a three-point victory over the Vikings to open up the trip. GB would go on to win the final three games of the trip by 18, 23 and 22 points respectively. REBOUNDING REVENGE Since Green Bay was outrebounded by 12 at Dayton in a loss, it has gone four of six games with a double-digit plus rebounding average. Most recently, Green Bay edged out Cleveland State on the boards and Detroit by one Against Milwaukee, the Phoenix set its season high in rebounds and rebounding margin and has totaled a +61 rebounding average over that five game stretch. Green Bay has gone 5-0 in those games and has been outrebounded in eight games this season, but has managed a 5-3 record in those contests. CONTINUED PRESSURE The Phoenix has continued to force its opponents into turnovers and bad shots. Green Bay currently boasts a +5.6 advantage in turnover margin, forcing its opposition into 19.4 turnovers per game. GB is only averaging 13.8 turnovers per game itself. BUCK S BACK The reigning Horizon League Freshman of the Year is picking up in where she left off in Buck is second on the Phoenix with her 10.4 PPG, she knocked down six three-pointers and tied her career high in points with 24 against Duquesne at home back on It s early yet, but Buck is dismissing any notion of a sophomore slump. SCORING SURVIVES The Phoenix returns 76 percent of its scoring from last season, including four players who averaged 9.0 PPG or more. Brennah Ranger s departure leaves a void of 10.8 PPG that she averaged last season, but Megan Lukan (9.0 PPG in 13-14) and Mehryn Kraker (9.5 PPG in 13-14) will both be expected to up their averages into double figures this season. All 12 Phoenix played in the game with 10 denting the scoring column, including four in double digits and 33 points from its reserves. It marked the eighth time this season Green Bay had 10 or more players score, as it moved its overall record to 21-8 on the season. Green Bay dominated play in the paint, outscoring the visitors 38-8 in the category while also receiving a 33-8 advantage from its reserves and a edge in points off turnovers. The Phoenix finished the game shooting 45.8 percent (27-59) from the field. Valpo was 38.0 percent from the field (19-50) and 44.8 percent from deep (13-29) fueled by a game-high 18 points by Carr, who finished 6-for-11 from long range. Senior guard Megan Lukan (Barrie, Ontario), who earned Horizon League All-Defensive Team honors last season, will be the floor general for the Phoenix. Her younger sister, Kaili Lukan (Barrie, Ontario), will again look to lead the offensive attack after leading the team in scoring a season ago (11.5 PPG). Add in Tesha Buck (Red Wing, Minn.), last year s Horizon League Freshman of the Year, and Mehryn Kraker (West Allis, Wis.), who came on late in the season and also landed on the All- Freshman, and you have a quartet of guards who can pretty much do it all. PHOENIX FRESHMEN A class that is filled with scorers, rebounders and ball handlers, Green Bay s freshman group is one of the best in program history, at least on paper. Jessica Lindstrom (Superior, Wis.), Allie LeClaire (Green Bay, Wis.), Laken James (Oconto, Wis.) and Jen Wellnitz (South Wayne, Wis.) each graduated their respected high schools as the program s all-time leader in multiple categories. Throw in numerous state championships and a handful of All-State selections and you have a class with as high of expectations as any other in the history of the program. IN THE PAINT Mariah Monke (Fergus Falls, Minn.) will hope to control the paint in , after leading the team in blocks last year with 18. Monke may assume a starting role after appearing in 30 games last year as a redshirt-freshman, starting in five of them. Sam Terry (Baraboo, Wis.), one of the team s solid three-point shooters, will also give a high volume of minutes, as will Lexi Weitzer (Waukesha, Wis.), Green Bay s other solid post presence. OFF THE BENCH A recently-named senior, Ellen Edison (Maple Grove, Minn.), who will now graduate in the spring of 2015, returns as the team s leading scorer off the bench. Edison appeared in 29 games for Green Bay and averaged 5.2 PPG as a trustworthy guard. The senior will look to provide a spark off the bench or in the starting lineup, after averaging 18.1 MPG last year. RECEIVING VOTES In the first edition (preseason) of the Associated Press Top 25 Poll, Green Bay was receiving votes. The Phoenix was one of only four mid-major schools to receive a vote, and if counted down after No. 25, the Phoenix would check in at No. 48 in the country.
