3 After the Break... Under head coach Matt Bollant, the Phoenix is 2-1 throughout the month of December following four days off for the holidays. Green Bay s lone loss came Dec. 29, 2008 at DePaul. Overall Green Bay is 52-5 in regular-season play after its holiday break. Non-conference Finale... This is the second consecutive season Green Bay has wrapped up its non-conference play at home. The Phoenix is 2-1 under Bollant in its nonconference finale of the regular season. One Shining Moment... For the first time since suffering an off-season knee injury, senior Heather Golden stepped on the floor Dec. 10 in Green Bay s win over Southeast Missouri with 2:58 remaining. Following unbearable post-game pain, on Dec. 14 Golden announced she would halt rehab on her knee. Golden will remain with the team but has decided it would be best for her future health that she play a different role from the sidelines. Postseason Opponents... Of the 12 non-conference opponents Green Bay faces this season, six of them appeared in postseason tournaments in the season. The Phoenix went 2-0 against teams that played in last year s NCAA Tournament and 3-1 against those that played in the WNIT. Career Performances... Every game Green Bay has won this season, the Phoenix has had at least one player tie a career statistic. Most recently, Adrian Ritchie tied a career-high seven rebounds in Green Bay s win over Evansville Dec. 18. A couple of 100-mark individual milestones have been reached by the Phoenix this season with one more to go. Senior Celeste Hoewisch played in her 100th collegiate game Nov. 25 vs. Hartford while Kayla Tetschlag played in her 100th game Dec. 6 at Eastern Michigan. Head coach Matt Bollant is seven wins away from reaching his 100th win with Green Bay. Should Bollant reach the milestone this season, he will be the head coach to win 100 games the fastest in Phoenix history. Early Bird Rankings... On Dec. 6, Green Bay cracked the Associated Press Top 25 Poll notching the 23rd spot. It marked the earliest in program history the Phoenix has appeared in the AP poll. Nov. 22, 2010 was the earliest in program history Green Bay landed in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches Poll, also entering at No. 23. Club Membership... Senior Kayla Tetschlag is on track to join the 1,000-point club. Tetschlag is 24 points away from the 1,000 career mark. Classmate Celeste Hoewisch became the 27th member of the 1,000-point club Nov. 26 after pouring in a career-high 28 points in Green Bay s win over Penn State in the Caribbean Challenge. Doubling Up... Every game this season, at least three players have scored in double figures for the Phoenix. Four times this season, four or more players have scored in double figures and once five players have posted double digits. Joy of the Journey... The newest blog to GreenBayPhoenix.com takes you along and inside the Green Bay women s basketball season as the team works toward a second consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance and 13th consecutive regular season Horizon League championship. Assistant Director of Athletics Communications Jill Wunrow provides blog updates throughout the season with special commentary from head coach Matt Bollant and Phoenix Fans. Joy of the Journey was chosen as the title because of its meaning to the program. Bollant and his players tell themselves to enjoy every practice and every moment and never let anyone steal their joy. Joy of the Journey can be found at the bottom of the women s basketball home page. A Winning Tradition... With its 28-5 record in the season, Green Bay tallied its 33rd consecutive winning season, the third longest streak in the NCAA (Green Bay trails only perennial powerhouses Tennessee and Louisiana Tech, 36). During the season, Green Bay finished the season 29-4 and was the first team to win 18 games in Horizon League conference play, winning its 11th straight regular-season championship; the nation s longest active streak. Green Bay went on to make its 10th appearance in the NCAA tournament. In the campaign Green Bay ranked first in the nation in scoring defense holding opponents to an average of 50.8 ppg. 17 Just the third head coach in the storied legacy of Green Bay women s basketball, Matt Bollant completed another historic season while continuing to add to the Phoenix record books during the season. In just three seasons, Bollant has compiled an impressive 50-4 conference record in the Horizon League and an overall mark of while guiding Green Bay to two NCAA tournaments and one WNIT. During the campaign, Green Bay became the youngest team in program history to reach the NCAA tournament while earning the first ever Horizon League at-large bid. Bollant led the Phoenix to the second round of the NCAA tournament with a thrilling win over No. 5 seed Virginia, the highest seed Green Bay has ever beaten in the tournament. In the second round, Green Bay led the majority of the contest against No. 4 seed Iowa State only to come up short (56-60). The respect and admiration the Phoenix earned on the national stage was unmatched as Green Bay was the second youngest team in the field of 64, behind powerhouse Tennessee. The Phoenix won its 12th straight regular-season Horizon League championship, extending the nation s longest active streak. Green Bay also picked up strong nonconference wins over NCAA tournament teams Wisconsin and DePaul, as well as Marquette. As a result, the Phoenix (28-5) rose as high as No. 14 in the coaches poll during the year, the highest ranking in school history. The team s win total marked the 33rd consecutive winning season and 11th straight 20-win campaign. It also was the fourth straight time that the Phoenix won at least 25 games. During his second season with the Phoenix, Bollant helped Green Bay become the first team in league history to win 18 games. Bollant s efforts earned him Horizon League Coach of the Year honors for the second consecutive season. The team went 29-4, tying the school record for victories and making an appearance in the 2009 NCAA tournament. Bollant was also recognized by the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association as the Division I Coach of the Year. Under the direction of Bollant, Green Bay has appeared atop national rankings as the Phoenix ranked first in the nation in scoring defense, holding opponents to an average of 50.8 points per game. In addition, Green Bay ranked second in the nation in turnover margin during the campaign. In his first season with Green Bay, Bollant guided the Phoenix to a 26-6 record and the program s 11th straight postseason berth, a spot in the WNIT after leading the Phoenix to a 17-1 record against conference foes. For his efforts, Bollant garnered Horizon League co-coach of the Year accolades. Further successes of the season include the team s NCAA statistical championship in three-point field goal percentage, the team s 13-game winning streak late in the season, a 15-2 home record and the team s finest defensive performance in 14 seasons when the Phoenix held Northern Arizona to just 27 points on Dec. 15. For his career, Bollant boasts an impressive record in seven seasons as a collegiate head coach for a stellar.804 winning percentage. He is the second winningest active coach in the country with at least five years as a four-year college head coach but fewer than five years at the Division I level. Bollant arrived in Titletown following five seasons at Bryan (Tenn.) College. In his five seasons as the program s mentor, Bollant posted a record (.788 winning percentage) with the Lady Lions at the NAIA level. Under Bollant s watch, Bryan made NAIA national tournament appearances in each of the last four seasons. The team advanced as far as the Sweet 16 in with a 26-8 record. During his first campaign with Bryan in , Bollant guided the squad to a team-record 29 wins while appearing in the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) national tournament. No stranger to the national polls in his own right, Bollant guided the Lady Lions to the NAIA top 25 national rankings four straight years, peaking at No. 11 at the end of the season. Along the way, Bollant mentored four Appalachian Athletic Conference Player of the Year honorees in five years: Brittany Swanson (2006 and 2007) and Liz Bass (2003 and 2004). Bollant also instilled the importance of academic success at Bryan. His teams posted an overall grade point average of 3.1 or higher all five seasons, with 40 percent of his players earning academic allconference honors. Also of note, Bollant served as the chair for the NC- CAA Mideast Region from Prior to his appointment at Bryan, Bollant served as an assistant coach for former Green Bay women s basketball standout Kathi Bennett at Indiana University for two seasons and at the University of Evansville for three years. Bollant and Indiana made Head Coach 4th Season at Green Bay MATT BOLLANT Overall 50-4 Horizon League back-to-back postseason appearances with the team s trip to the NCAA tournament in 2002 and the WNIT in The 2002 squad won the Big Ten tournament for the only time in Indiana history. As an assistant for Bennett at Evansville, Bollant aided his mentor in turning the Purple Aces program from a struggling one into a conference champion. After just six victories and one Missouri Valley Conference win in , Evansville rallied to claim the MVC tournament title the following year and make its first-ever NCAA tournament appearance. Evansville then went on to go 23-7 in , setting a school record for victories and making a trip to the WNIT. In that season, Bollant assisted the Aces in a win over Green Bay in Evansville. Bollant got his head coaching start at Tigerton (Wis.) High School, where he led the Tigers to an impressive record over three years, including a 22-1 mark during the campaign. His teams won Central Wisconsin Conference-Small School titles each of those three seasons. While still in college in 1992, Bollant served as the varsity and junior varsity head coach of Deeper Life Academy in the Philippines, where both teams combined for a 15-1 record. A 1994 graduate of Winona State (Minn.) University with a degree in business education, Bollant also has a master s degree in education from American Intercontinental University Born March 13, 1971, Bollant and his wife, Kari, have two daughters: Abi (11), and Regan (9).
